Before Music Videos - SGT Peppers - An Imaginary Experience .......2007-08-01

The most amazing thing about this Beatle record was/is that it transcends the musical experience. Keep in mind that in 1967, there was no MTV or VH1. When this record was playing your imagination went wild! It was like your own personal movie in your head. It starts like being at the theatre and then you go everywhere imagineable... sitting on a sofa with meter maid, inside the home of well meaning parents, going to the freak show circus, attending a church-like service with sitar, dreaming of growing old with the one you love, sitting in a high school class p*ssed off at the world, overcoming dysfunctional relations, riding in a boat, witnessing an accident, watching a fox hunt, reading a book, WOW. And everyone saw it there own personal way, no two imaginations are alike. The Beatles took you to a magical place within your own being with this record. I am grateful that there was no video to ruin it! BRAVO Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band! A Day in the Life is a masterpiece.

Sgt. Pepper deserves to be considered one of the greatest achievements in popular music. This issue is good quality and includes a nice booklet that explains the album - including a diagram of who's who on the cover picture.

Just a very good Beatles playlist.......2007-07-31

Is this the greatest album ever? It probably is in terms of influence, from packaging and marketing, to the very notion that a rock or pop music album really matters. In terms of its musical merit, one can easily make the case that Pepper has been overhyped - and its shortcomings are all the more glaring in light of the album's cannonical status in modern culture. This record has suffered from its own success - and after forty years - its conceivable that it now represents something of a let-down. After all, no recording could possibly meet the expectations that this album carries.
This album should be approached for what it is, a very solid album by a talented musical group (that only happens to be my favorite band - and maybe the favored band of quite a few others). The strongest points of the album are its opening tracks and closing tracks - which form a medley of sorts and further the illusion of conceptual unity. Many (Lennon included) have derided the idea that this album is truly a concept album - and it certainly is not one in the sense that the Who's "Tommy" or Pink Floyd's "The Wall" are. The concept is more fundamental - that this disc contains a set of pop/rock songs that have been thoughtfully arranged together for all time - and not packaged at random to meet immediate market demand. In a way, with Napster and I-Tunes, the great age of the album that began with Sgt. Pepper, "Pet Sounds," and other 1966/1967 releases has come to an end in this decade, and this has made it it even more difficult to grasp what the fuss was truly all about. But if one wished to make a short Beatles playlist on their I-pod that captured the overall personality of the group, as well as having a representative effort for each of its four members, and a good mix of rock, pop, and experimental numbers - Sgt. Pepper would be an ideal playlist.

Best Album Ever!!.......2007-07-30

This has got to be, without a doubt the best album ever!!
The genius of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr shine in this album. Two of them are greatly missed. There are just no words to describe this album except for Pure Genius.

I've been reading some of the negative reviews on this album, and yes there are quite a few! Some say this album is satanic, others say it's overrated. Whatever! This album is not satanic, nor is it overrated. I think this album opened up a new kind of music into the world, and people loved it.

George's Indian music is amazing, and lets not forget John's masterpiece, "A Day in the Life."

I'm lucky enough to own the record, which I bought at a flea market for a $1.00. Yes, some moron sold his Sgt. Pepper album for a buck!! I took it home and the album works perfectly! I doubt it's a first edition, but who cares?

If you don't have this album, go buy it! Give it to your kids so they can appreciate what GOOD music sounds like.

apparently they were recording this album for 6 months...so you would have expected something truly amazing.but in my opinion it is no where near the best beatles album.abbey road is so much better.the 30 seconds in the middle of "a day in the life"(p macartney sings) is worth the money on its own.

The cynic may question just how many Beach Boys greatest hits albums are enough. Everyone else, however, will appreciate what makes Sounds of Summer unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross section of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through 1988's "Kokomo." All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes, were Billboard Top 40 hits and are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people, and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Which is to say that the title here passes the "truth in advertising" test. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums, Sounds of Summer is in many ways a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis' 30 No. 1 Hits and The Beatles 1 were of the King and the Fab Four. --Bill Holdship

The Beach Boys get their 1.......2007-08-04

We have the Beatles to thank for the Elvis Presley 30 # 1 hits and now the Beach Boys Sounds of Summer. That's fine by me because this is the best Beach Boys compilation I've seen. It covers all the Top 40 hits, including slightly obscure hits like "Do It Again" and "Darlin," which at least I never hear on the radio.

The CD isn't chronological, but consists of mini-sets like three Pet Sounds songs in a row, a few surfing songs in a row, and so on. The harmonies sound brilliant and the songs still hold up 40 years later; even Kokomo sounds good in this context, and that's nothing to sneeze at. If, like me, you lack a Beach Boys greatest hits, then this is certainly the one to get. The remastering sounds wonderful and brings out the harmonies. Listen with headphones!

These are summer classics and to hear them again is a such a joy! It brings you back to the 60's (for those of us who remember the 60's). I bet the young people of today would get a kick out of listening to a pristine version of Surfin' USA, I Get Around, and some of the other classics.

Don't Worry, Baby is a personal favorite but it's the mono version. However, listening to it on a nice set of speakers makes it sound like it's in stereo. I would have liked "Warmth of the Sun" included in this collection but hey, 30 of the best Beach Boys songs on one CD, I'm not complaining!

The perfect Beach Boys collection for casual fans.......2007-06-14

Casual fans will find this to be the ultimate collection of the Beach Boys music as it contains all of the band's top 40 hits. 30 classic tunes from 1962 all the way to 1988 are here on a single CD with top-notch sound quality, rare photos of the band, and a nice essay inside the CD booklet. All of the early surf classics that everyone knows are presented along with lesser-known later hits that are just as worthy such as "I can hear music", "Do it Again", "Wild Honey", and "Getcha Back".

However, since this CD contains only the band's "top 40 singles", serious fans will find this collection a little less appealing since some of the Beach Boys' best music {including many good recordings after 1966} never made the top 40. Several of these songs such as "Let him run wild", "Catch a Wave", "Warmth of the Sun", and "Girls on the Beach" are not included in this otherwise excellent collection. Much of this worthy lesser-known material has just been reissued on the new highly recommended compilation "The Warmth of the Sun".

This is only a minor issue of course since "Sounds of Summer" is surely one of the most comprehensive greatest hits collections ever released by any band. ALL of the Beach Boys hit singles are here on one disc, which makes this an essential CD for every Beach Boys fan.

Must have.......2007-06-13

If you're not one that already owns every Beach Boy record, this is one that you'll want to pick up. With 30 tracks it's a great survey of the Beach Boys from way back then up until some of there more recent stuff. If you're not familiar with the Beach Boys, you'll probably be amazed at the number of tracks on this CD that you've heard before and are familiar with, but didn't quite make the connection that all that good stuff came from the Beach Boys.

A nice nostalgic collection of songs from another turbulent time. Too bad they didn't include Country Joe and "1 2 3 What Are We Fighting For" or "California Dreaming."
Conversely, some songs on the CDs like "Reflections" or "Pleasant Valley Sunday" seem out of place.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

At only 16 years old, Bryce Avary put out a self-titled EP as "The Rocket Summer". Local radio shows started playing tracks from the album. Two more records, Calendar Days and Hello, Good Friend followed, along with the fans, who sing along to every word of every song. Soon, Avary found himself headlining mid-size concert halls. Do You Feel, his first major label release with Island Def Jam, is similar to his previous work in that he wrote and performed the entire album himself. Co-Produced by Jim Wirt (Incubus, Jack's Mannequin), it is also possibly the most energetic and upbeat album you'll hear all year. Do You Feel is full of guitar-fueled power pop, piano-laced ballads and big, big choruses. The horn-driven "So Much Love," the first single, marks a bit of a departure, and one of the rare times Avary collaborated with other musicians. "There's a common theme on this record," says Avary, wanting to do greater things for the world, and not just trying to be a rock-'n'roll star. I think we all have that desire but our issues and daily life get in the way. These songs are about trying to overcome that."

can't get this album out of my head.......2007-07-25

Wow...this CD was my introduction to the rocket summer and i was blown away. This is honestly one of those CDs you can listen to from front to back and not skip a track. My friend told me that the lead singer, Bryce Avary, writes, sings and plays every instrument on the whole CD, which I thought was really impressive. The stand out tracks are "So Much Love", "Break It Out" and "High Life Scenery". I challenge you to listen to at least these songs and try to get them out of your head...it won't be happening. I know that The Rocket Summer is playing on the Warped Tour this summer and I cannot wait to see them...I've heard their live show is just ridiculous. This CD is great for fans of Something Corporate, Dashboard, Ben Folds and Blink-182.

Better than the best.......2007-07-22

I've fallen in love with Bryce's 2 previous albums and now there are 3!!! You would be missing out on everything good in life if you did not purchase this CD and give it a chance. Don't just think it is another pop-punk band... it's different. He is one of the only bands to bring out the beauty in the world with his lyrics.

Better With Age..........2007-07-22

This is now the third full-length CD released by the amazingly talented Bryce Avary, the one man band The Rocket Summer. I was first introduced to TRS back in 2004, with Calander Days, which quickly became one of my favorite CDs of all time. Then, with the release of Hello, Good Friend, a few years later, Bryce only continued to blow us away with an even more enriched musical experience. He added more layers to the harmonies, more depth to his lyrics, and more instruments to his report. I didn't think it could get much better, as Hello, Good Friend is one of my favorite albums, by any artist, of all time. However, to the point, Do You Feel, has topped that. I couldn't wait for it to be released, and bought it the second I could. Since then, I've listened to it over and over and over again, loving it more and more each time. This time, Bryce adds a slightly political, and moral stance to some of his songs (Do You Feel), and his vocals are absolutely phenomenal. The same intensity from HGF is there, but some of the screaming has been toned down (come on...you remember...). The downside? there are some moments that will bring back a lot of that classic TRS sound. But, I guess, if you're a fan, that repitition isn't such a bad thing at all. Anyways, I love this CD as much, no, more than any of Bryce's other stuff, and I've been a fan since the beginning of time. I recommend EVERYONE buy this CD. If it doesn't stick right away, give it 3 or 4 listens and I guarentee you'll be in love...

Do You Feel is the new album from The Rocket Summer. It is everything I hoped for and more. I have been a fan of TRS from the beginning. Bryce has an amazing ability to bring something unique to every record he's ever released. There is not one song from TRS that I do not enjoy. Bryce has talent in every aspect, from his lyrics to the fact that he plays all of the instruments on his records. On top of that he's a really nice guy who genuinly cares about his fans. I highly recommend Do You Feel to anyone. Whether your a devoted fan or your just realizing the full potential of TRS, this album is for you.

good, but not as good.......2007-07-17

this is a good cd, but not as good as calendar days or hello, good friend. its slightly dissapointing as its much more generic and mainstream than the former albums. its missing that certain spark that only comes from bryce's songs like "tv family" or "brat pack". its good though, every song is catchy and the lyrics are mature and well composed. all in all, bryce nailed it again.

Wilco's de facto frontman, Jeff Tweedy, sports a colorful past, one where he wrote paint-peelers dedicated to late Minutemen founder D. Boon as a member of the feted (and maybe fated) Uncle Tupelo and where he dolefully crooned Woody Guthrie lyrics on 1998's Mermaid Avenue. But Wilco's Summer Teeth shows hardly a tatter of Tweedy's herky-jerky postpunk intensity or the agrarian rootsiness that so often came in the past from him. Instead this layered album spreads its digits far into guitar-heavy Britpop, with full-group backing vocals carrying bouncy choruses and synths whistling over the melodies. The tunes sound like a crosshatch of orchestral plans and an execution drawing on Alex Chilton and Big Star, the Kinks, and, only distantly, Wilco's debut, A.M. "We're Just Friends" and "Via Chicago" stand as harmonized twists on ballad formulas, the latter recalling Mermaid Avenue's "California Stars" with the opening line, "I dreamed about killing you again last night / And it felt all right to me." So it's not always uplifting or cheery, but it's got dozens of surprises in a mere 15 songs. --Andrew Bartlett

Definitely CAN Stand It..........2007-06-21

Summerteeth marks the point where the wheels officially fell off the wagon for die-hard Uncle Tupelo & AM/Being There Wilco fans. From the opening pop-rocky "Can't Stand It" (intentionally made radio-friendly by the record label), it became clear that alt-country wasn't going to be the name of the game anymore. "She's A Jar" briefly confuses you into thinking otherwise, but "A Shot In The Arm" - possibly the best song on the record - sends the album in yet another direction with the help of a looped piano track and synth effects.

The first three tracks pretty much set the tone for the remainder of Summerteeth. The album continues swinging between up-tempo toe-tappers ("I'm Always In Love", "Nothing'severgonna...", "ELT"), borderline alt-country ("Via Chicago", "When You Wake Up...") and slow, soft tunes ("We're Just Friends", "My Darling").

Overall, I like this record because it's so ecclectic. You never get bored due to all the variety, and the hidden/bonus tracks provide a nice little surprise at the end. Not as good as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but VERY close.

If this album was playing at a pool party and you could only hear the melody and beat, you might think, wow, what a fluffy little pop album, sounds like the Beatles or something. HOWEVER, when you start to listen to the lyrics and examine the dark lyrical content, you realize that this album is not what it appears on the surface. The arraingments are a little more complex than you think. "I'm Always In Love" ranks with the best of Wilco's material, a song with cryptic lyrics and a real toe-tapping rythym. "I Can't Stand It" is also addictive. Overall I would say the album explores the lonliness of life on the road. I put this up there with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as Wilco's best.

Quite possibly my favorite Wilco album.......2006-07-30

Maybe it's because I live out in the country and don't listen to the radio, but I got on the Wilco boat after most folks had been around the lake a few times. There was a huge buzz surrounding Wilco after the release of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in 2002, but I didn't get my hands on it until much later. After I fell in love with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, I was recommended Summerteeth. While I'm on the boat now, I still consider myself a newcomer to the Wilco. I don't have all the albums yet and I haven't read the books (though I did enjoy the documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart), so this review is for all those other newcomers that I eager to find out what this Wilco band is all about.

One thing that strikes me as odd is that across the board, Wilco is classified as a country band. I'm not sure how that happened, but to all those narrow minded folks out there saying "I like all kinds of music except country," don't be like that; give it a shot. I maintain that truly great music transcends genre. The arrangements of these songs are rich with harmonicas, piano, guitar, and ambient electronic noise. The lyrics are nothing short of brilliant.

Summerteeth is not as intricate as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. That isn't a criticism, just an observation. Summerteeth is a shining example of Wilco's beautiful and humble beginnings.

Of all Wilco Cds, this one is by far my favorite! I absolutely adore Jeff Tweedy. These songs just wouldn't be the masterpieces they are without his vocals. "Shot in the Arm" "How to Fight Lonliness" and "She's a Jar" are the outstanding songs of the disc, however all the songs are great. I just can't say enough about this cd!! I love it. If you enjoy this cd, you may also like Mermaid Avenue. While both volumes are great, I highly suggest the first.

Court and Spark had earned Joni Mitchell mainstream pop acceptance, but its underlying spirit of discovery pushed her to risk new-found success with this edgier, experimental sequel released in 1975. Although the session crew is largely the same, and sleek jazz elements again abound, these songs find her introducing Burundi drums (on "The Jungle Line"), layering magisterial but forbidding vocal harmonies ("Shadows and Light"), and casting rueful shadows across the sun-dazed Southern California of the title song. Her daring promptly earned critical scorn and halted her commercial expansion, but the album's confident eclecticism and dark beauty have outlived that reception: from the safety of hindsight, Hissing was a promise to stay hungry and creatively adventurous, a promise kept then and now. --Sam Sutherland

A lot of people simply forget about Hissing: the critics hated it at the time, dismissing it as artsy pretense, and it's not like it shows up on many peoples' Greatest Album Ever lists or anything. Allow me to argue in its favor: it's as good as, if not better than, the much more acclaimed Court and Spark. I think the reason for the backlash was because it was jazzy, and critics dissing Joni just because she went jazz on them obviously means they're not bright enough to "get" this album, which I find odd because this isn't that hard to "get". Oh well, critics are stupid anyway. Rock on, Joni! Metaphorically speaking, that is. Right, so this has a bunch of good songs on it! Like "In France They Kiss on Main Street". Great, great lyrics, great, great guitar solo. Great song! So is her experiment with African tribal rhythms "The Jungle Line". You wouldn't expect Joni to do this, you know, but she does it well. She also does the a capella (mostly, you can hear a keyboard crop up here and there) performance "Shadows and Light" pretty well, though it's a bit long. And yes, there's a lot of jazzy stuff here, like the multi-part "Harry's House - Centerpiece", which has a fun blues piano solo; the folksy "Edith and the Kingpin"; and the ironic "Boho Dance" (well come on, when has the term "Boho" been used in a non-ironic sense?), which features the best lyrics on the album. So does "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow", which seems almost anti-religious to me, or at least anti-religious hypocrisy. To me the only weak songs are the ones that look to the past (title song; "Shades of Scarlett Conquering").

Joni at Her Best.......2007-04-19

Joni has famously quipped, supposedly to a fan attending one of her concerts who wanted her to sing one of her old songs, that "nobody ever asked Van Gogh to paint 'Starry Night' again." And maybe when she did she was thinking of the reception this album (which I see that most of the reviewers have given four or five stars to) received upon its release as the followup to "Court and Spark."

It's laughable that a work of genius like this, containing "On France They Kiss on Main Street," the title track, "Shades of Scarlett Conquering," "The Jungle Line," and the miraculous "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow" could have been branded as one of the worst albums of 1975 by "Rolling Stone"--but it was.

Now of course it's considered a masterpiece, and well it should be.

Joni Mitchell does Luis Bunuel.......2007-03-05

What is there to make of the Joni Mitchell that emerges on The Hissing Of Summer Lawns? This Joni Mitchell seems to have no connection with the Joni Mitchell who, up through Court and Spark, released the previous year, was in her creative peak, a winning streak that spurned out one perfect album after another (what artist working today could make albums the astonishing quality of Blue, For The Roses, and Court & Spark in succession?). Mitchell, it seems, was interested in taking her music in a very very different direction - the lyrics now are not the coherent, eloquent epistles of angst and regret, they are works of beat-poet stream of consciousness (this line starts "Don't Interrupt The Sorrow": Don't interrupt the sorrow/ Darn right/ In flames our prophet witches/ Be polite/ A room full of glasses/ He says "your notches liberation doll"/ And he chains me with that serpent/ To that ethiopian wall"), and the music itself wreaks of the Steely Dan 70's. The attempt? To say something in the vein of a Luis Bunuel about the stagnating complacency of the bourgeoisie. I didn't much care for that Joni Mitchell when I started listening to the record, as many people still don't - her less-transporting verse is a meaningless ramble and truthfully, even some of the great writing is lost in its song form. A song like, for example, "Edith and The Kingpin" might read like great morality tales, but is as far from memorable as the weakest of her material, and its opener, the single "In France They Kiss on Mainstream" is energetic enough, but is dying in search of a tune. Yet something struck me after a while - that middle section of the record! "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow," "Shades of Scarlet Conquering," "The Hissing of Summer Lawns," "The Boho Dance," "Harry's House/ Centerpiece" and "Sweet Bird" work with at least a fraction of the full conceptual and lyrical fire that Mitchell intend, and, in the case of "Hissing" and "Sweet Bird" allow Mitchell to fulfill a grander ideal with songs attempting more daring commentary and soaring past their already large intentions. It's a flawed record to be certain, but what works about The Hissing Of Summer Lawns is its ambition to be a work of great concept that, even when failing, makes you admire the drive.

Worth 20 stars alone for the songs "Hissing of Summer Lawns and Harry's House"!.......2007-02-26

I have been known to repeat those 2 songs over and over and over, better each time you hear them.. they are masterpieces of storytelling and vivid imagery. Could Joni, dear brilliant beautiful multi talented humble Joni be even greater? These songs are worth the price of the CD. And luckily there are all the other gorgeous songs too. How many superlative albums has this woman made? Is it every album!? I think nearly so. But this, this is a totally incredible mind altering experience. Put on your iPod headphones and let her lyrics and music take you places and show you things you have not ever heard or seen or at least not thought about consciously. If there was ever a complete artist, I would say Joni is the one.

A world away.... .......2007-01-23

Joni Mitchell was coming off of the well deserved success of " Court and Spark" as she entered the studio to fashion " Hissing". Considering the extensive self exploration Mitchell had put forth in earlier work, ranging from pictoral reflection ( "Ladies of the Canyon") to inside-out musical expression ( the irrefutable classic " Blue")then back again with astute, more mature searchings on " For the Roses" and " Court", this fan thinks she earned the right to turn the conversation from "I" to "You".

However, if one really looks at the lyrics on "Hissing", it's apparent that Mitchell didn't turn the lens completely away from herself. In fact, she was examining the decadence she sometimes found herself a part of, or at least in a position to analyze by proximity.

The first track, " In France They Kiss on the Main Street", champions early rock and roll like no other; the images of 50's youth steaming in the streets is vivid. The remainder of the disc explores religious symbolism, the male/female saga ( as would be expected by this point), metaphor as a tool for illustrating stage characters ripe with an overload of "herd" culture. Contrasts between extremes provide a scathing glimpse into the undercurrents of what passes for the ideal standard.

" The Jungle Line" is a pioneer. World music before Paul Simon and the others, using primitive artist Rousseau to paint a picture of urban blight, comparing it to society excess. The title track, as well as "Harry's House/Centerpiece" take on the claptrap of the American dream, offering different results. " Hissing's" leading lady remains planted, while " Harry's" longs for freedom. Males and females are skewered equally for superficial desires and complicit provocation. Metaphor and symbolism, as stated above, require full attention to truly absorb the arc of this album. Short attention spans will lose most of its significance. As a sidebar, the CD has been criticized for lack of melody, which is nonsense. There is so much musicianship the less attentive might have trouble with the nuance.

The juxtaposition between the bland comfort mainstream society provides and the courage it takes to be true to oneself and escape its trappings makes this a philosophical entree into seventies culture. Ahead of it's time, " Hissing" is a CD that changes the formula, but aren't artists given that license?

The themes may be familiar, but the spirit is fresh: Working with his United Streets D-Boys of America crew, Young Jeezy finds his flow on Cold Summer and has no compunction about settling into it, even when that means his compadres Slick Pulla and Blood Raw get bumped to the side of the beat. From the hot, hooky "White Chick" (street code for cocaine, despite all the shout-outs to Christina Aguilera) to the bangin' second single "Corporate Thuggin'," this is Jeezy's baby--introspective, Jeez-ified joints like "I Keep Tellin' Myself" and "Live My Life" lay street life out for close inspection, and "Check" and "Focus" chug along to characteristically unstoppable choruses. Slick Pulla and Blood Raw step up most notably on "Get It Up" (Pulla) and "Respect the Shield" (Raw), and they give off an energy Jeezy clearly coasts on; overall, though, the title gets it right. Jeezy's doing the presenting here--he's a cool, capable leader in a unit whose players don't yet equal him, but probably will in the space of a few mixtapes. --Tammy La Gorce

We all know who Jeezy is and what were going to get from him so let me enlighten you on the other two members: Slick Pulla and Blood Raw.
Slick Pulla: Prior to this I've heard him on some mixtapes. Even though his rhymes were mediocre he gave Jeezy a run for his money but on here his rhymes are subpar to say the least.
Blood Raw: The worst rap clone in rap history next to The Realest(2pac clone) and Drag-on(DMX's mini me)! He sounds like Snagglepuss and rhymes like Jeezy. I mean heavens to murgatroid since Jeezy wants to sign clones he might as well bury the hatchet with his equally wack archrival Gucci Womane and sign him. There are only two tracks that are worth mentioning. Check is the best song on here and Ride Tonight is okay. The first single White Girl is so stupid one has to wonder how anybody can call it a banger plus the hook is just as silly as the song itself. Classic examples of beatwasting is exhibited on Corporate Thuggin, Get It Up and Focus as all three bust some suspect verses over those dope beats. The original version of Go Getta was nothing to brag about but its better than the lackluster remix with Jadakiss(who had the only decent verse on the track). I Keep Tellin Myself, Pam and Quickie should have been found their way into the studio trash can like this mixtape. Bottom Line: Cold Summer is one of the worst releases of 2007. Young Jeezy, Slick Pulla and Blood Raw busts below average rhymes over dope production(with a few exceptions on the production part) and its safe to say that Jeezy is only going to get worse. Just avoid what comes out of this camp like a rabid dog.

USDA: Hot Summer!!!.......2007-07-06

To eloborate on C. Allen's review... the tracks on this album are bangin'. Coming out of ATL, its refreshing to hear an album that doesnt have a dance to match every freakin song. Young Jeezy successfully kept the same winning formula from his debut album with USDA. He still keeps it as street on this album as he did with his underground mixtapes like "I Am The Street Dream" & "Snowman."

I heard he has a mixtape with Fabolous coming out called "When The North & South Collide Part 2"...should be a banger!!!

I gave this a 5 star rating based on the fact it is a mixtape and not an album. If it was an album I would have given it 4 stars but that's besides the point. The USDA did their thing on this album and I'm happy Jeezy introduced them to the public on a commercial standpoint. Like all of other Jeezy related material, there is some solid production. If your not familiar with Jeezy or what he's about then the content of this mixtape may be over your head. Besides that, Jeezy drops some very good verses. Slick and Bloodraw need a little more time to develop.

Are you guys serious?!?!?! How can you rate this piece of junk of a cd anything higher than a 2. I am not hating on them, just being honest. There isn't one song on this cd where I caould listen to the whole thing. Jeezy has fell off. If want to hear some real Jeezy music before he got saturated with mainstream, listen to Thug Motivation 101, Boyz N Da Hood album, and the DJ Drama Trap or Die Mixtape.
