About the Artist
After coming to California from rural Chicago at age 10, David Arkenstone immersed himself in all the music he could find. After criss-crossing the country several times playing popular music in various bands and performance groups, he finally settled down to concentrate on developing his own sound. When technology developed to the point that computers and instruments could finally communicate to each other, David knew his time had come. He could now hear a good portion of what he could imagine. David is recognized as one of the best-selling New Age artists today drawing from World music, classical rock, and new age styles to create a sound that is uniquely his own.

Falls a little flat.......2006-08-29
The music in this Arkenstone collection is good, but not great. He instrumental pieces don't achieve "sweeping", more "flying around". The slow "vocal" ones also fall flat, missing etherial but hitting pretty. All in all, it's nice to listen to, but not moving. If you're expecting an Arkenstone collection with a strong theme or story, as some of his other work has provided, you won't find it here. I wouldn't throw it out, but I'd try listening to it at the library first before purchasing.
Spirit vs. Book.......2003-12-06
Although I agree with the others that this is a very good CD, there are also some remarks I would like to make. Since we own both 'The Spirit of Ireland' and 'The Celtic Book of Days', both CD's by David Arkenstone, a comparison lies at hand. And in that comparison the Spirit is clearly the lesser album. The music and atmosphere on both albums is pretty much the same. But if 'the Spirit' is like watching a movie on TV, 'the Book' is like experiencing the same movie in the cinema. The Spirit is like listening to a live recording of a band, the Book is like being present at the concert. The Spirit is like looking at a beautiful picture of a landscape, the Book is standing there with the wind in your hair and the smell in your nose.
I'm not saying the Spirit is a bad CD, because it is not (if you own it you know) but there is a difference between good and excellent. And that is the difference between the Spirit and the Book. If you are considering buying the Spirit I strongly suggest at least to listen to the Book first; if you already own the Book: the Spirit has nothing extra to offer you.
But all this is of course our personal opinion, everyone is free to think of it otherwise. And one thing is sure: Arkenstone's music is superb !
Kind regards,
Marianne and Hans.
Welcome back to Eireann!.......2003-08-11
Let me say before I write anything more that my introduction to the work of David Arkenstone was his 1998 album "The Celtic Book Of Days" and I loved it. Several others followed (Music Ispired By Middle Earth and Avalon: A Celtic Legend) All were beautiful but I did not come to write about them. Now, David has returned to Ireland with this CD and really does manage to capture her spirit in this lovely collection of works. He hsd outdone himself here.
One thing I love about this music is that every instrument when you hear it rings out loud and crisp and clear, from delicate harp and ocassional piano to soaring flutes and whistles to lovely stringwork and the pounding beat of the bodhran (the Celtic goatskin drum). The instrumentation is very nice here. VERY nice indeed.
Over The Hills- As is fitting for the beginning track, this starts off slowly with a kind of mystical feel, then picks up with bodhran drumming and heavy use of the violin or fiddle. It really does give you a feel of galloping thorough lush meadows on horseback, perhaps seeing mountains in the distance. At least it did for me.
The Fairy Ring- This piece is fast too. Fairly fast to me anyway. It has the same energy as Over The Hills, but to me it feels more like a celebration. It seems to suggest a festive or mystical dance, rather than the beginning of an epic adventure or battle.
The Shore Of Kinsale- There is only one word for this track. BEAUTIFUL. Soaring whistles and flute and absolutely lovely violin work capture the spirit of Ireland with a great emotional tug. When I envsion the natural beauty of Ireland in my head, I usually imagine hearing a tune like this.
Cherish Ladies- No this is not a tribute to the famous all female Irish band. This is another festive peice that is sort of mid-range as far as tempo goes. When I hear it, I envision either lovely lasses dancing in a circle, or a big clan gathering where everybody is happy to be home.
The Festival- This is easily the fastest cut on the album, with driving bodrhan, strings and violin work and some other instruments too. It's party time, get on your dancing shoes, you don't want to miss the fun. That's what this track is. Fun and playful and happy. I actually found myself smiling and chuckling to it and at it, but in a GOOD way. It's funny and happy and playful without being silly or goofy. It's a great track and just plain fun to hear.
Shadows Of The Myst- This is easily the most distinctive cut on the CD. It is performed mostly with keyboard effects, some of which sound vaguely choral in nature to me, and lovely plucked or strummed string work. It captures a mystical feeling of awe and wonder, rather than the festive feel of the earlier pieces on the CD.
Song Of The Selkie- Like the Shore Of Kinsale, there is only one word for this piece to me. It's lovely.
Morning Ride- This piece is great and struck a very emotional chord for me. It is lighthearted and airy, almost noble-sounding. It does not invoke the feeling of a raucous horse race or adventure as Over The Hills did for me. Rather, when I hear this a picture an Irish Cheiftain or king out in the meadows with his queen or Lady as they enjoy a leisurely morning ride together out over the meadows, glens, and lakes of thier home. Nice and relaxing and very emotional. I love it.
Call Of The Sea- This a yet another excellent peice of work. For me it does a perfect job of capturing the beauty of the Irish coast and the loneliness of a sailor's life, but also the love a man or woman might feel towards the ocean if they spent their lives on or around it.
Farewell To Coolman- As the opener of the CD "Over The Hills" was fast and adenturous, this tune, the closer, is slow, stately, and a bit somber. It is reverent and has a noble sound with a touch of sadness in it. It is for me a very emotional piece that makes me envision the clans of Ireland saying a tender and loving farewell to one of their own, perhaps like a a noble king who has been slain after a valiant effort in an epic and heroic battle.
In short, this tribute to Ireland in music is a grand one. It really does capture her beautiful and majestic spirit, and it does her justice. Give it a shot. You just might love it like I do. God bless you all. Always. Thanks for reading this review. Peace. :)

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-05
This is a really good representation of 20th century hymn tunes sung by a typical British Choir made up of boy sopranos, male altos and the usual number of tenors and basses. The choir sings very well using good diction and appropriate interpretation. The arrangements are varied, different groups of voices singing parts of a hymn usually alternating and eventually the full choir joins in; nothing unusual in the arrangements themselves. There is a nice variety of hymns, some more interesting than others. I will comment on a few of them as follows:
The opening hymn:'Christ, triumphant, ever reigning' is a good opener in that it is quick and begins with the boy sopranos and immediately gets your attention. John Barnard's majestic 'Guiting Power' tune sweeps the words up in a wide-ranging,flowing melody that creates from them a fine hymn.
'I, the Lord of sea and sky(Here I am, Lord) is a truly striking hymn! The words of this song begin with a proclamation in the verses; this is answered in the refrain by the singer's commitment to service. This is reflected in the tune. The melody for the verses has a vigorous movement to proclaim the work of God in creation, His continuing love for that creation, and His call for service. Both the words and music are by the American Jesuit musician Daniel L. Schutte, who has served both on college campuses and in parish ministry.
'All My Hope On God Is Founded' the tune of which is written by Herbert Howells and is called 'Michael'in memory of his son who died in childhood. It is a lovely melody and the words suit it very well.
The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was the music editor of the 'English Hymnal'. The most widely used of his own tunes was the 'Monk's Gate' which he created from a folk tune. It is subtly contrived, as the rhythm of the alleluias shows. 'Sine nomine' simply means without a name. The resulting hymn is 'For All the Saints'.
The Wells Cathedral Choir under the direction of Malcolm Archer accompanied by Rupert Gough on the organ have produced an excellent disc.
Dan Schutte's Here I Am, Lord.......2001-01-08
I bought this collection because I saw the song, Here I Am, Lord written by Daniel Schutte. I grew up singing this song and many other pieces from the St. Louis Jesuits and this continues to be one that has deep meaning for me. In addition, the other pieces in this collection are very enjoyable to listen to, not only for worship but for time of reflection.

God is an Englishman.......2000-06-05
After the Anglican Communion, particularly the American branch, has completed its transformation from a church to a political-social club, at least it will be remembered for two things: the beautiful and influential language of its Book of Common Prayer (1662) and its wonderful music. The English Hymn, volume 1, is a promising start to another English music series by Hyperion. This series complements Hyperion's English Anthems series, its Psalms at St. Paul's (many volumes of Anglican chant), and its two-CD collection of "Mags and Nuncs" (My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord and My Spirit Hath Rejoiced). Volume 1, "Christ Triumphant," features hymns written in the 20th century. The styles of the hymns range from confident, pre-Great War, "God is an Englishman" roof-raisers to insipid, happy-clappy jingles, which inadvertently, I assume, parallel the decline of the church. The Wells Cathedral Choir sings with gusto and, typical of Hyperion, the sound quality is excellent. My only disappointment came when the CD ended - is this all there is to the 20th century? I hope Hyperion plans to include more than one volume on the 20th century in this series. If you enjoy this type of music, you will be satisfied with this CD. If you have CDs from the other series listed above, the English Hymn, vol. 1, and a programmable, carousel-CD player, now you can click your heels and transport yourself to Evensong at King's College, Cambridge, or St. Paul's, London!

The High & The Mighty.......2007-07-20
Excellent music by London symphony. We used it during an airshow and it worked great! Very happy
A Perfect Recording.......2005-12-03
At its best, film music aurally heightens the drama, pathos, passion, joy and emotional intensity of the visual experience. And when film music is artfully written and skillfully performed, it can create a magnificent aesthetic experience.
Richard Kaufman and the London Symphony Orchestra have created an album featuring some of film music's greatest moments, all of them related to flight. The title track, "The High and the Mighty" features a theme that literally soars, capturing the sweeping energy and pensive drama of the film. Bruce Broughton's "The Boy Who Could Fly" is a beautifully lyrical and tender work.
There are many great films about military flight and fliers, and this recording features some of the best music of the genre. One of the highlights of this album is the great Prelude and Fugue from "Spitfire" by Sir William Walton. One feels the tension and courage exhibited by the great pilots of the RAF. Ron Goodwin's "633 Squadron" and Craig Safan's "The Last Starfighter" are two significant contributions to the genre.
Some of the best loved music about flying is from comedies, and there is no funnier and more clever score than the one Elmer Bernstein created for "Airplane!" Featuring a choir that literally screams, this music is laugh-out-loud funny. With it's homage to John William, "Airplane!" is joined on this disc by one of the greatest pieces of "flying" music ever written - John Williams' brilliant Flying Theme from "E.T. The Extraterrestrial."
While the music itself is brilliant, the performance by Richard Kaufman and the London Symphony is breathtaking. This orchestra has a long history of performing the soundtracks for motion pictures, but this recording features performances that are, for the most part, even better than the originals. The brass plays with more richness and the strings with more finesse than can be heard in a movie theater.
Richard Kaufman has created a perfect album - a compilation of film music built around the theme of flight that covers every emotion, every nuance and every sensation of the genre - performed with more skill and passion than has ever been captured on a recording before. You have to hear this one!

There have been moments when it seemed every shopping mall in the Western world had succumbed to Riverdance, when every speaker and video monitor in every store and public square was pulsing with the rhythmic Celtic beat of a score of vibrant young hoofers tapping fervently to fiddle and tin-whistle. The phenomenon has now gone Broadway, and composer Bill Whelan--who's done for his native Irish folk music what Freddie Mercury and Queen did for Italian opera--has raised the musical stakes considerably. Whelan's familiar, amped-up take on the Chieftains is supplemented here by harmonically brave a cappella refrains and even the fusion-minded use of Spanish guitar and flamenco rhythms. Whelan has written six new songs for this production, which features vocals by Brian Kennedy and Tsidii Le Loka (who has appeared in Broadway's The Lion King as Rafiki). The album thus presents the most comprehensive and up-to-date version of the evolving Riverdance phenomenon. Whelan is what many critics hate most--a consistent crowd pleaser. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Good for easy listening, not the thrilling stuff.......2005-02-11
What made me listen to riverdance in one word is, Thrilling.
And the rest of the good stuff attributed to something as famous as this one.
This CD lacks the thrill and excitment which Riverdance: Music From The Show [SOUNDTRACK] ASIN: B000005B2O this CD has, however this is a excellent CD for those audiance who love riverdance and usually go very easy on their ears, and not looking for riverdance to increase their heart rate 1 and a half the normal. I am very passionate about music, I said precisely "passionate". so this is not a good buy for me.
A perfect supplement.......2004-11-28
Riverdance on Broadway shouldn't be considered a standalone album. It has wonderful music, and I liked all of the tracks, even those that had more of an African flavor. If you're a Riverdance fan, you need to pick this up- though don't forgo Music from the Show, as some tracks from MftS just wouldn't fit on RoB. Taken together, they are a wonderful aural experience.
Inspired, heartfelt and stunning!.......2003-12-31
Alternately driving and lilting, energizing and haunting, this is music from the Broadway version of "Riverdance", which incorporates highlights of both the "Riverdance" touring show and its sequel, "American Wake". The taps and other percussive foot-pounding of the step dancers and flamenco dancers, an integral part of the livelier tunes, can be clearly heard along with the fiery instrumentals. Bill Whelan's Celtic-, African- and Spanish-inspired compositions are performed here by a variety of artists, including the choral group Anuna, the Riverdance Singers, the Amanzi Singers, fiddlers Maire Breatnach and Eileen Ivers, piper Davy Spillane, vocalists Brian Kennedy and Tsidii Le Loka, Bill Whelan on piano, percussionists Tommy Hayes, Desi Reynolds and Noel Eccles, and the Riverdance Orchestra, conducted by Proinnsias O'Duinn. Though the title "Riverdance" is conveniently memorable, I've never been particularly convinced by the attempt to connect these world-inspired performances to "rivers". However, the integration of music and "dance" in this theatrical masterpiece is obvious, exhiliarating and ingenious. Bravo!
A wonderful facelift for an enduring Celtic classic...........2002-07-02
I bought into the Riverdance craze when it first came out, and I am the proud owner of the video, a T-shirt, a coffee table book, and the original soundtrack. When I'd heard that Bill Whelan had composed several new songs for the Riverdance on Broadway spectacle, I rushed out to buy it even though I already owned the Riverdance:Music from the Show soundtrack.
One of the most pleasing aspects for me was the addition of vocals by Brian Kennedy, a singer from Belfast with a voice of spun gold whose voice adds a remarkable dose of Irish pathos. I was familiar with some of Brian's other works: he was a backup singer with Van Morrison for several years, has appeared as a guest artist on at least a dozen albums, and recently recorded a beautiful track on the new Secret Garden release "Once In A Red Moon" titled "You Lift Me Up." His smooth, soulful voice is a much-needed lift to Riverdance favourites such as "Lift the Wings" and "Reel Around the Sun," and a driving force for the new songs (including "At the Edge of the World" and "Endless Journey"). Unfortunately, Brian is relatively unknown in North America and the majority of his albums are only available in the UK.
Also, Tsidii Le Loka (Rafiki in the Lion King on Broadway) is a spectacular regal presence that truly imparts a new African feel (most evident on the new song "Amanzi") to a tried-and-true show.
Other than the six new songs and the additions of two new singers, the album closely follows the Riverdance: Music from the Show formula. It is a foot-tapping blend of Celtic, flamenco, Eastern, and African, blending low whistles, accordion, Uillean pipes, fiddle and percussion, with performances by such notable musicians as Davy Spillane, Eileen Ivers, Tommy Hayes and Maire Breatnach. Riverdance on Broadway is perfect for Riverdance fans, stepdancers, and fans of Irish/ world music.
Extraordinary Album!.......2001-07-28
I saw the show on Broadway and bought the album from Amazon. They sell the same album at the theater, but at a higher price. Hearing the album brings many of the scenes from the show back to memory. It was a great show for the family, and the recording reflects that. I suppose you would put it in the category of acoustic folk music, or some such.
The show I saw featured Athena Tergis on fiddle, although I don't believe she performed on this album. If you like this genre, you might consider her excellent album, Journey Begun, as well.

Customer Reviews:
Surpassingly beautiful.......2001-08-02
This is a terrific anthology of classical orchestral pieces by twentieth-century British composers. This spectacular set includes the hauntingly beautiful Eclogue by Gerald Finzi, Death of Falstaff by William Walton and other fine works by such greats as Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughn Williams and Frederick Delius. I bought this collection for one particular piece (Eclogue) and found the entire set well worth the price.
Just one final note about Eclogue: composer Gerald Finzi worked on this piece for piano and orchestra for decades (l920s - 1956) and died before it was named or performed. It was first performed in a memorial concert dedicated to Finzi. This piece is truly a passionate and fitting elegy for a supremely-talented composer. There is a brief section in the work which is performed in triple time. Without fail, whenever I listen to it, my heart starts to beat in triple time, my throat tightens and I have to take a moment to recover. It is a rare work that can evoke such a strong response.
Magnificent selection of British music--light and serious.......2000-06-14
Ah, the rarity of the following statement: This second edition outdoes the first by, well, a good kilometer--and that is no easy feat. Spirit of England II is a beautifully crafted, four-disc compliation of the finest in British neo-classical and light music (circa 1880-1980). There is the familiar (The Planets, Enigma Variations) and the less-so (Finzi's Ecologue, Elgar's The Wand of Youth). Add in the delightful (Ireland's Downland Suite minuet) and the achingly beautiful (Walton's "Touch Her Soft Lips and Part" string instrumental from his Henry V score) and you have over four hours of aural bliss.
