Lisa Lynne is a Celtic harpist who doesn't really play Celtic music. Instead, hers is an evocation of Renaissance troubadour music, full of modal melodies and sweet harmonies. Tracks like the waltz of "Welcome" and the delicate air of "Bandora's Box" highlight Lynne's penchant for gentle, cyclical melodies and lush arrangements. Like many folk-based artists, Lynne has arrived at a chamber-music sound, full of haunting flute and recorder choirs, gypsy violin, and subtle string backings, in this case from the Chamberlain, an ancient cousin of the mellotron. Lynne rarely takes the spotlight, leaving that to George Tortorelli, who soars through her melodies and stacks up choirs of recorders. Joining him on many tracks is violinist Sid Page. Only some unimaginative percussion undermines compositions that want to fly off into a realm of fantasy and nostalgia. --John Diliberto

Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

Donna Summer's Four Seasons of Love.......2007-04-23

This is early pre-1979 Donna Summer. If you like that silky sexual disco sound of that period, you'll enjoy this. It is a continous mix of 5 songs, one of them being a reprise. The orchestration is really fun to listen to especially on "Summer Fever" and "Spring Affair" Although Ms. Summer doesn't really perform these songs anymore, this recording will take you back to what I think was a much happier and freer time during the mid 70's. I enjoy listening to it.

"Four Seasons" of a Relationship.......2006-11-20

Let me just start by saying: This is, by far, some of Donna Summer's best work to date, with some awesome production from the Moroder/Bellotte team. The title of the album is pretty much self-explanatory. It is essentially the cycle of a relationship through the course of the seasons.

"Spring Affair" introduces us to Ms. Summer's love interest. You can almost feel the happiness in her voice as she sings, "Just the man I hoped you'd be..." By the end of the song, I found myself on the edge of my seat waiting to see what the next level of the relationship would be.

"Summer Fever" was my answer. You can feel the heat oozing through the speakers as she describes her passionate trysts with her lover. Like the old saying goes, though, "All good things must come to an end."

You can sense something wrong in the relationship through the lyrics of "Autumn Changes." She knows the demise of her relationship is just around the bend, but doesn't want it to end as she saying, "Surely something can help to patch it up." By the end of the song, the relationship is over, and there's a definite chill in the air.

"Winter Melody" sees Ms. Summer stroking her wounds, reminiscing in front of the fire she has going in her fireplace. You can hear the sadness in her voice at the loss of her love.

But then the snow begins to melt, and "Spring Reprise" has her falling for a new beau.

Definitely a must-have for any Donna Summer fan!

Defines the Era.......2005-12-29

This album defines Disco. Every classic style and sound of the disco era is captured here. The songs are masterfully executed in both composition and production. Notwithstanding the multitude of 70's classics, to describe the disco sound one need only listen as far as these recordings. You hear drum beats, bass lines, electronic synthesizers, violins, horns, and vocal harmonies blended into perfectly balanced hypnotic rhythms or melodic ballads.

One of Donna's Best.......2005-09-08

This is a definite must have for your Donna Summer collection. Excellent. Thank you Donna.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Lisa Lynne is a Celtic harpist who doesn't really play Celtic music. Instead, hers is an evocation of Renaissance troubadour music, full of modal melodies and sweet harmonies. Tracks like the waltz of "Welcome" and the delicate air of "Bandora's Box" highlight Lynne's penchant for gentle, cyclical melodies and lush arrangements. Like many folk-based artists, Lynne has arrived at a chamber-music sound, full of haunting flute and recorder choirs, gypsy violin, and subtle string backings, in this case from the Chamberlain, an ancient cousin of the mellotron. Lynne rarely takes the spotlight, leaving that to George Tortorelli, who soars through her melodies and stacks up choirs of recorders. Joining him on many tracks is violinist Sid Page. Only some unimaginative percussion undermines compositions that want to fly off into a realm of fantasy and nostalgia. --John Diliberto

For me, this CD has indeed accompanied me through the seasons of my own heart and soul. In times both joyous and tragic, this CD seems to be the perfect 'companion', as it were, along my emotional journeys.

The music is deeply evocative, with melodies and arrangements that are truly angelic! Lisa's harp remains the heartbeat through most of these songs with the flute singing beautifully alongside.

I can't speak highly enough of this CD. I can only say you'd be a fool to pass it up.

I tried to buy this CD reading previous reviews! have to thank you all! for me that I love celtic music (McKennitt, Enya, Sound Garden= I really appreciated this unknown artist...at least to me. If you love harp and sfot and relaxing music that s very good CD, for haunting atmosphere.

I'm not usually a fan of this type of music, but I came upon this CD in yoga class. The beauty of this music really stood out and I was compelled to enjoy it, rather than regard it as simply background music.

Sparkling, soulful and simply delightful!.......2002-11-30

Lisa Lynne once again displays her strength and talent as a composer and arranger in her own right. This set of original compositions, two of which were co-written with flutist George Tortorelli, is warm and welcoming. The opening track, which is in fact entitled "Welcome", is a wonderful example of the modern use of "ostinato" - where a musical phrase or rhythm is repeated over and over, allowing other instrumentalists to improvise around it. In this case, the ground is a simple chord progression with a repeating series of runs on the harp, and the improvisers are the talented Tortorelli, with a lovely layering of flute and recorders, and Sid Page, with delicately whimisical descants on his violin. There's room you too, if you like! Just follow their lead, or harmonize along with the ground. Lynne's musical style, while retaining signature elements, varies from album to album. This recording is perhaps a bit jazzier than the others I've heard, and nicely so. Track #4, in fact, sounds like tip of the hat to Andreas Vollenweider. Joining Lynne, Tortorelli and Page on this album are cellist, bassist and co-producer Gil Morales, Michael Fisher on percussion, and Yussi on guitar. Lynne also plays mandolins and bozouki on many numbers. Other recent releases include "Maiden's Prayer", "Daughters of the Celtic Moon", and the wistful "Moonsongs". If you like the work of Lisa Lynne and friends, you may also enjoy that of harpist Thomas Loefke and his group Norland Wind.

I purchased their first CD, Spiritual Warfare, a few years ago when I saw them live in Baltimore. They are just as awesome live as they are on the CD. I own all of their works including Remixed which was sold overseas before it came to the US. It too is awesome. Their music is a blend of so many genres and the messages are always positive. They are the breath of fresh air needed!

If I could rate this album 10 stars,I would. I have been a fan since they used to play @ Morgan homecomings 1999 and eyond. As fellow Morgan University Graduates, I must give that home grown flavor much love!! With Maysa trading vocals with the ever so soulful and beautiful N'Vasha - superb. This will only get airplay on a quiet storm on a college radio station -like WEAA 88.9 Morgan State University radio--or even WHUR in DC (Howard University). They are the epitome of 'underground' and grew from word of mouth. I love the track titled - Culture Bandits--it perfectly describes the way the industry violates the music of today, but Fertile Ground, as well as other artists in the 'neo-soul' movement (I really HATE that term) make music for the love of music, not the fanfare, not the fame, or notoriety. I love them for that...and to see them live is a spiritual and soul-stirring experience. I wish other artist would take a lesson from them--be real--to yourself, and not be SELLOUTS!!!

... i had a few extra bucks (no fareal such a thang tho, is it??) in my pocket and wasnt really expeckin to buy anything... just nosing around the local underground-music-record-store.
fumbled thru some r&b...
bumbled thru some hiphop...
mumbled over some reggae... then
stumbled across these cats.
(they was mixed in with 'house' & 'drum & bass' section... i 'ont know why... these folks is definitely NOT anything like house or dnb; not with this album anyway!)

anyway... i got to sample this before i purchased it... and i was (insert a word you caint say around yo mama anem) blown away!
not 'heavy and loud' blown away... but as blown away as downtempo, my-mellow-my-man-jazzfunk can blow a big brotha like me away... ...soft and focused.

yeah, very jazzy... jazz, um, ish... too much groove to be smoove-jazz... too underground-lounge to be some neosoul wannabe.

if you was gonna take the love of your life out to some late night coffee house for the friday open mic, then, these are the folks who'd be warmin the stage up when all the spitkickers got done reciting they flows, feal me?

a very useful collection of music for weddings. A pity that at least two of the samples let you hear the wrong music, i.e. other music than the title shows......

Problem with Samples.......2007-06-13

I am just reviewing to let people know that at least one of the audio samples is incorrect. I clicked the sample to listen to the sample of Meditation from Thais by Massenet but what played was the Entrance to the Queen of Sheba by Handel.

Perfect Music for a Perfect Day.......2003-04-02

What an excellent collection of music from the amazing Chandos catalog. All the selections are arranged into sections based on where in the ceremony the music would be heard. And there's more than just 'Here Comes the Bride' (although it is there) but all sorts of choices that any bride would love to make her wedding memorable and individual. 2 CDs that have all sorts of different music whether you're planning a traditional wedding or just a few friends in the park, there is something in it for anyone. I highly recommend this collection!
