4 out of 5 stars No More Indian Imitations, Please.......2007-05-25

I loved the songs with eerie female vocals but could do without the two tunes with male "Hey-ya, Hey-ya" singing.

5 out of 5 stars His Very Best.......2007-01-10

This is my favorite of the many great CD's by Deuter that I own. I find Deuter's music simple, yet evocative and interesting. Garden of the Gods is compelling as well. It isn't so good as "background music" because it grabs your attention so completely. I love the vocal sounds of both people.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious.......2005-08-31

Garden of the Gods is a spiritual and emotional experience, NOT musical "wallpaper". I teach T'ai Chi Chih which, among other things, is a moving meditation on joy and gratefulness. This beautiful soundtrack with its ethereal vocal and instrumental lines helps us to recognize this sense of joy and build upon it. This is by far my favorite "New Age" CD.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD!!!!.......2004-11-29

This is by FAR my favorite CD in my collection! I use it for meditation and also just when I need a lift. I recommend it highly and hope that others get as much from it as I do. My only problem is that is CD has set the bar that new ones are not messuring up. I would love any suggestions!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!!!.......2001-05-18

This is the best cd i own, it takes you to a place beyond reality,it takes you to a garden and beyond, I highly recommend this to anyone who searches for peace in their life, In it's meditative trance you will be under, you will find love .

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not worth buying!.......2007-05-29

I found this recording basically worthless. It contains only very short excerpts of the song. Not enough to get into and enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-01-18

This is the worst purchase I have ever made. It is a truly dreadful piece of work.I was so disgusted with it that I threw it into the trash can.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for "drop the needle" style tests.......2006-11-19

If you want to hear full recordings of arias, then this disc is not for you. It plays only tidbits of 99 arias. Contrary to the title, this is definitely not the only opera disc you'll ever need. You shouldn't take it seriously. This disc has next to no value for an opera neophyte. But for opera fanatics, there has never been a better test of your knowledge of operatic repertoire and singers. It's a great challenge for opera buffs. Sit down with your opera loving friends for an hour, play this disc, and try to be the first to identify the singer, composer, opera, and piece. If you're a music professor, this disc would make for an awesome pop quiz. Find out how well your students really know their opera repertoire.

1 out of 5 stars A CD with Attention Deficit Disorder.......2006-10-02

I don't know anyone who would enjoy this CD. It will drive opera fans nuts with a hundred exerpts that run about 30 seconds each, then fade out without the singers even finishing a single verse. It's more like an index of arias, or a volume of teasers that hucksters might use to sell opera CDs.

I never realized how much Bernstein's "Glitter and be gay" sounded like Delibes' "Bell Song" until I heard 35 seconds of one, followed 23 seconds of the other.

Maybe the TV show 'Jeopardy' could use this CD. 'What is "Hush little baby don't you..."??'

What a waste of beautiful voices and great music. 38 seconds of Enrico Caruso, followed by 31 seconds of Jussi Bjoerling, followed by 38 seconds of Dawn Upshaw.

My copy is going to go sailing into the wastebasket as soon as I finish this review.

1 out of 5 stars This sucks..........2006-03-31

I should only blame myself for not checking out more reviews... this is a CD filled with short, little snippets of great operas songs... and I mean SHORT, LITTLE snippets of 30 seconds or so, each. Don't buy this CD... it is a complete rip off... and that is saying ALOT since it is only $4.00... Again, my fault for not reading the reviews but I trusted that something called a "Music CD" would actually have complete songs... What else does this company offer? A "Music CD" that only has the intros or applause tracks to great songs...?

Move on to something else... Amazon has a great selection... just not this one.

5 out of 5 stars Frida/Lauritz.......2007-06-24

Well, this IS one of the great recordings, of the Wagnerian (recorded) past. Leider is exceptional, and Melchior is even-MORE so. The excerpts (with Sir Thomas Beecham) show what the best (vocal/orchestral) could do with the best inspirations of the Wagnerian language, and Leider & Melchior are, simply UNsurpassed .. in any attempt .. past, present or (maybe) future. This is ONE of the examples of the "old days" of recordings, that IS indispensable. IMHO.

Amazon.com essential recording

These excerpts from 1937 performances at Covent Garden have long been available in one form or another, but never in such impactful sound. No, it's not stereo and it still sports odd balances and thin string sound. But the voices come through clearly and it doesn't take much mental adjustment to become absorbed by performances of overwhelming power and intensity. The Flagstad-Melchior combination was untouchable in Wagner, and Furtwängler was perhaps the greatest of all Wagner conductors. All are captured here in their prime, galvanized by a live audience to deliver singing and conducting of unsurpassable beauty and understanding. No Wagnerian or lover of great singing can afford to miss this. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Masterful.......2003-09-01

This is a selection from a 1937 performance of the Ring. Furtwngler is my all time favorite conductor of Wagner and he lives up to his reputation. The singing is also excellent, only marred by old recording equipment that does not adequately capture the wonderful performance. Any Wagner lover will enjoy these CDs, despite the less than good reproduction of the 1937 sound (which is why I gave it only 4 stars).
Since writing this review a couple years ago, I must say that this is a CD that I listen to repeatedly. It has become one of my favorites in my Wagner collection.

5 out of 5 stars Flagstad's Brunnhilde at her best.......2002-02-28

You have never heard a more exciting performance of neither the third act of Walkure or of Gotterdammerung. I only wish there was a complete recording of those glorious days of Wagner music. Flagstad's Brunnhilde has always been the grandest in opera history, and these performances are no exception. Her tonal splendour, her power and magnetism has never been more evident on record than here. Her seasons in London in the 30's was probably even finer than those at the Met. Her partners there seemed to bring out the best in her. Furtwangler, Beecham, Reiner, Melchior, Janssen, Bockelmann. This with her stunning performance of Tristan und Isolde the same year with Beecham must be considered some of the very best singing she has done. The nobel performance of her Walkure's Brunnhilde, the emotional rollercoaster ride of Brunnhilde of Gotterdammerung is so expertly acted out in Flagstad's singing. Flagstad's magnificent performance somewhat overshadows her great partners. Rudolf Bockelmann's Wotan is nothing short of brilliant, along with Melchior's heroic Siegfried, Kerstin Thorborg's desperate Waltraute and Ludwig Weber's great evil Hagen. This is a performance to treasure for all Wagner fans who look for the greatest Wagner singing of the century. I would recommend this along with the excerpts of Frida Leider's Gotterdammerung performance the previous year with Beecham, Melchior, Thorborg and Janssen released by Preiser.

5 out of 5 stars Flagstad and Furtwaengler in the Ring.......1998-11-10

This is a stunning album. The sound is pretty good--for 1930s sound midway between the celebrated Beecham/Reiner Tristan and the Lehmann/Melchior/Walter Act I of Die Walkuere (which is as good as imaginable for that era). The singing, especially by Flagstad, is off-the-scale wonderful. One could claim that this is her very best Immolation Scene, and her great melodic line about 30 minutes before the end of Die Walkuere is spine-tingling. Bockelmann's Wotan is as good as the best, and Melchior is inimitably himself. The conducting is perhaps more tightly organized than in Furtwaengler's later versions. Beautiful little details in the orchestra pop out, even with the fair-to-middling sound.

If you are just starting out to explore Wagner's Ring, this is probably not the album to start with. Get one of the super recordings (either of the whole thing or separate operas), such as Solti or Karajan. Those provide a text. Then get the Bruno Walter Walkuere Act I--it's the best example of Wagner's ability to write a tightly knit hour of music and of theater--no wasted motion or notes--and there is no performance like that one. Then begin to explore marvellous byways such as the present album.

Placido Domingo is a phenomenon. He has preserved not only the beauty, flexibility, and flawless production of his voice over a career spanning four decades, but also his eagerness for new adventures and challenges. To several Wagnerian roles he performed recently, he has now added Siegfried, at least on record (having first tried out the role on his successful Wagner Love Duets). This disc proves that his vocal power is undiminished, while his ability to create and project character keeps gaining depth and conviction. That said, it cannot be denied that he is not a true "Heldentenor," vocally or temperamentally. Thus, one misses the unbridled boyish glee in the sword-forging scene, despite the ringing high A's.

However, his response to the Forest Bird is exuberant, his duet with Brünnhilde ardent and ecstatic. The lyrical, introspective passages--like his musings about his mother and his dying farewell--are most moving and persuasive. He is splendidly supported by Violeta Urmana, a dark-voiced, passionate Brünnhilde; Natalie Dessay, whose Forest Bird laughs merrily; and David Cangelosi, who makes Mime's devious villainy a bit too obvious. Since in Wagner the orchestra is almost as important as the singers, the disc includes several instrumental sections, and the playing is wonderful, though almost inaudible in the very soft passages. The wind soloists are grand, the forest murmurs, the Rhine swells and glitters, and the Funeral March is majestic. Since there are no set pieces in these through-composed operas, a feeling of disjointedness is inevitable, and the transitions between scenes do not really work. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Like A Fine Wine: Domingo Sings Wagner.......2005-11-09

Even the biggest fan of Placido Domingo in the late 60's, 70's and 80's would have never imagined at that time that Placido Domingo was capable of singing Wagner's Siegfried, or anything by Wagner in general. It is now fall 2005 and by now the vocally gifted, incredibly versatile tenor has sung such diverse roles as Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin and Queen of Spades in Russian, Gounod's Romeo in French, Spanish-sung roles in Zarzuelas of his native homeland, contemporary Spanish romantic songs, Mozart's classical opera seria Idomeneo, Broadway's own Man of La Mancha, and of coure all the juicy tenor roles of the Italian repertoire-Pinkerton, Cavaradossi, Rodolfo, Pagliacci, Alfredo, Radames, Pellione, Edgardo, Otello, Andrea Chenier, Don Carlos and many others. To top off an illustrious and long career, he has sung Wagner heroes. Tannhauser, Lohengrin and the Flying Dutchman he has sung on recording and stage, and Parsifal as well. This year EMI has relesed Domingo's Tristan from Tristan and Isolde. As Tristan he sings gloriously. Siegfried presents no difficulty for him. I don't care for spiteful critics' constant criticism that he has no business sinigng Wagner and adding it to his fach or that he is not real heldentenor. Says who ? Just because most audiences are used to hearing an armored tenor singing fortissimi and using the "Bayreuth bite" invented by Cosima Wagner ? Just because most people associate Wagner heroes with such tenors as Wolfgang Windgassen or Jon Vickers ? Wagner admired and even imitated Italian bel canto styles and specified that some parts of his arias should be sung smoothly, beautifully, with a purity of line and not with excessive melodramatic ardor. Domingo's voice is big enough to essay the role of Siegfried. It is tinged with a sort of grand melancholy and rich with lyric beauty. I have never heard the German language sung more beautifully by a tenor. The magic of a Wagnerian love duet is expressively demonstrated in the scenes with the Brunhilde of Violeta Urmana, who sings both mezzo and soprano roles. Not even Birgit Nilsson and Wolfgang Windgassen sounded as beautiful. They make the lovers sympathetic and makes their tragic demise even grander. Papano does wonders with the score, approaching the music with calculated risk. There is no reason why you should dismiss this recording. This is Domingo's Siegfried and Wagner's vision come to beautiful fruition. Domingo, past 60 proves to the world that his is a voice that, like fine wine, only gets better with age.

4 out of 5 stars Generally excellent (but Dessay WOEFUL).......2004-12-04

Yet another example of Domingo's ability to sing a wide range of opera. Gets a fairly good Heldentenor quality, despite his
very non-Germanic accent. Pity that Domingo probably will never do a full Goetterdaemmerung, but who knows? :-)

Good sound so very good in general.

But except that Natalie Dessay as Woodbird is WOEFUL. Mile-wide vibrato screeching on high notes. A good coloratura singer otherwise, but if only she could sing properly here!

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Domingo.......2003-09-11

This is a terrific set of excerpts witt Domingo's golden tone. but the Brunnhilde here is weak compared to the great Brunnhildes. I also very very highly recommend the recent set of 3 CD excerpts by Astrid Varnay released by Deutsche Grammophon. Although it is supposed to be Astrid Varnay's CD, it features Wolfgang Windgassen in his absolute prime!! The exceprts include Walkure: Brunnhilde-Siegmund Death announcement scene, Siegfried: complete final scene between Brunnhilde-Siegfried and Gotterdammerung: opening love duet & Immolation Scene and Tristan & Isolde: Act 1 Isolde's Curse, Act 2 Love Duet and Liebestod. In the 3 CD set costing only 3 dollas more than this 1 CD set, you get Windgassen at the START of his career when his voice was absolutely unspoilt by the wear and tear of constantly singing the heaviest Wagnerian tenor roles. Yes, Windgassen is in glorious form in the 3 CD set MUCH fresher than he was to become in the Solti ring, Bohm ring or Bohm Tristan and Isolde. Added to that you have the glorious Brunnhilde and Isolde of Astrid Varnay in her absolute prime!! Again, this is before her voice became spoilt by the constant singing of heavy Wagnerian roles. All for 3 dollars (and 2 CDs more) more than this set which is only 1 CD. So while you enjoy this set, don't forget the other set which I think is even better.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wagnerian Feast!.......2003-08-30

What is left to be said after listening to this magic recording? Once again Placido Domingo proves that he is up to any challenge in the operatic repertoire. Though he has performed Wagner roles before the public on the concert stage, usually as part of an orchestral evening, he here approaches the Ring Siegfried as if to the role born. Hearing his musically focused, golden-hued voice traverse all of the terrifying hurdles inherent in this impossible tenor role leaves the listener aghast that Domingo is now in his 60's! He soars (in the sword forging scene) with ease and yet also communicates the tenderness and vulnerability of Siegfried with equal finesse, as in the heart-rending "Brunnhilde, helige Braut". But all of that aside, listening to this recording is a full experience also because of the wondrous conducting of Antonio Pappano, the earthy Brunnhilde of Violeta Urmana, the soaring Forest Bird of Natalie Dessay, and the smarmy comedy of David Cangelosi's Mime. The solo portions of Domingo's Siegfried are matched by his union in his duets with Brunnhilde and Mime. Then we have the majesty of the orchestra (the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden) in a generous sampling of the Forest Murmurs, the Gotterdammerung 'Daybreak', the 'Rhine Journey', and finally the 'Funeral March'. Antonio Pappano continues to astonish with his conducting, his musicality. Opulent and dramatic and an intensely beautiful experience.

3 out of 5 stars THE GREAT NILSSON DESERVES BETTER THAN THIS.......2006-01-12

Of course Birgit Nilsson was incredible --------- she could, by sheer effortless vocal power, reduce a full symphony orchestra to a mere string ensemble. She was, alongside of Kirsten Flagstad, probably the greatest Wagnerian soprano of the twentieth century (at least to the extent to which post World War II recordings can testify), and I personally treasure the many times I saw her perform live. That said, however, I must admit that I was somewhat dissatisfied with this particular London release. For starters, the Immolation Scene from "Gotterdammerung" is drastically cut. Secondly, Sieglinde's arias from "Die Walkure" were not really ideally suited for Nilsson, although she did sing the role early on in her great career. Verdi was not really ideal for her either,
though the final top C in the "Nabucco" scene is a stunner. The Lady Macbeth Scenes are very good until you compare them to the exemplary Callas versions. This recording would have profited from different Nilsson material that is readily available in the London vaults. For a sampler of what this great dramatic soprano could accomplish, I suppose this will suffice, but the essence of Birgit Nilsson is not illustrated in bold relief ----------at least not to the level of which she was so thrillingly capable.

4 out of 5 stars Fine selection of Nilsson's greatest -in brilliant sound........2003-11-05

This very fine CD is part of a series called "The Singers"
created by Decca in tribute to some of the greatest voices of the 20th century.Birgit Nilsson is certainly one of them. Obviously the intent is to
give a good cross section of the types of repertory and range of Ms. Nilsson magnificent voice, both for the
uninitiated, and the afficionado. It begins with works of early German Romantic opera (Beethoven and Weber), followed by Verdi, then Wagner and finally rounding up with some sacred pieces.
This is quite a good selection of musical styles.
As far as her range and emotional depth ,one of my favorites are Agatha's wonderful aria from Weber's Freischutz with the soft, piano, legato of the first part and the contrasting glorious agitato of the second.
Of course her Isolde is unforgettable and here we are treated to the Liebestod with the never ending wave upon wave of emotion (from her celebrated complete Tristan recording with Karl Bohm conducting). It builds and builds until it is almost impossible to endure it, coming to that great climax and ending in everlasting peace. One of the most beautiful things ever written, and this has always been Nilsson's great triumphs.
For superb piano singing listen to Abigaille's great aria in the first act of Nabucco. A great challenge for singers.Same is true for Pace, pace mio Dio from
La Forza del Destino, always a favorite of sopranos.
Coming to the other Wagner selections, like the ones from the Ring, one however is left somewhat disappointed, not by the singer, but Decca's choice of excerpts. The bits from the Walkure's first act are what people call "bleeding chunks of Wagner", giving us a taste, but each coming to an abrupt end just as things heat up.I realize that 70 minutes is awfully short time to give her justice, but perhaps some alternate venue, such as the complete Immolation scene ( with Solti, not Bohm)
instead of the Walkure excerpts would have been better.
I mention Solti, because his Ring with Nilsson has been
one of the great triumphs of Decca.
I am happy, however, about the inclusion of a joyful, exuberant, "Hallenaria" from Tannhauser showing off her laser-like voice, which Irving Kolodin refers to as "aural adrenalin".
The recording is in CD-ROM format, but playable on any CD or DVD Audio equipment as well as on the computer. There are lots of extras such as picture gallery, texts etc.Sound is excellent. It is handsomely packaged and is good value for the money. I wouln't hesitate to recommend it to any music lover.

5 out of 5 stars The "working soprano" works her magic!.......2002-08-29

The first time I heard Nilsson, I instantly knew I'd found something truly remarkable. She made an incredible instant impression on me. The only other time this happened to me, was when I first heard Callas.

Nilsson was one of the greats, whose Brunnhilde seems to totally overshadow her other works. It's easy to see why, to me she will always be THE Brunnhilde. This cd, however, is a great bag of mixed tricks that really showcase why Nilsson is one of the greatest sopranos in operatic history.

I'm going to talk about each of the tracks, but somewhat out of order.

Tracks 6, 8, & 9: They made some interesting choices with their selections from 'The Ring' here.

In choosing the 'Immolation Scene' (track 6) from Gotterdammerung, I am certainly surprised DECCA chose Boehm over Solti. I have both of their Ring's and they are each incredible. The good with choosing Boehm was it gives the listener a chance to hear what Nilsson could do at the end of a very long night, vocally. The bad with choosing Boehm over Solti is that Solti's reading is unsurpassed. While you get the thrill of Nilsson's emotions created by the audience with Boehm, you miss the amazing orchestral playing by the Vienna Philharmonic and conducting by Solti. Boehm goes a little too fast through the 'Immolation Scene' here - but it's still fantastic.

It was very interesting that they choose to showcase Nilsson as Sieglinde (tracks 8 &9) from 'Die Walkuere' rather than Brunnhilde, but it is quite fortunate, as I've never heard it and it is glorious. Truly glorious. It leaves me wishing there were a complete recording somewhere, with her in the role.

It's very unfortunate that DECCA is releasing these singers sets as solos, when there's a lot of good duet work they could have added on. I really felt this cd would have been just electrifying if it had the finale scene between Brunnhilde and Wotan from 'Die Walkuere' using Boehm's recording from the same performances as the 'Immolation Scene' on this disc. Boehm's 'Walkure' is the best out there in my opinion. It's simply dynamite. They also could have had the opportunity to showcase a little bit of Solti's incredible Ring by placing the finale duet between Brunnhilde and Siegfried from 'Siegfried' on here. It's truly incredible and is pure Nilsson. It also helps that Windgassen and the Vienna Philharmonic are right there with her. To anyone that says 'Siegfried' is their least favorite of the Ring operas, I tell them to listen to Solti's reading because it may very well change their mind. It is riveting.

Okay - I am a Ring finatic, sorry.

Track 1: It's really nice to hear something from 'Fidelio' out of Birgit. When I heard that she sang a Beethoven piece, I was really hoping it would be Ah! perfido! which I just love. However, she does a fantastic job here.

Track 2: I'm not a huge fan of 'Der Freischutz' but she sure makes me love this aria. Truly commanding.

Track 3: I love Verdi and it's really nice to hear her singing some Italian.

Track 4: This track blew me a way. This big strong voice goes so soft and gentle at moments, it'll break your heart.

Track 5: Wow - I am definitely going to get her complete 'Tristan und Isolde.' The Liebestod always blew me away and the performance here is incredible.

Track 7: Nice to hear some Tannhauser on here. Wagner and Nilsson together are magical.

Tracks 10 - 12: These are perhaps my favorites on this disc. Really nice to hear these beautiful pieces sung so well, with gentleness and care. Silent Night has always held such a special place in my heart. All it took to get me to purchase this disc is to hear she would be singing it.

I cannot comment on the added specials...it's a ehanced cd with a photo gallery, sung texts (with translations) and Nilsson discography. Certainly going to check that out.

5 out of 5 stars Most beautiful ever.......2001-12-15

Everything on this disc is thrilling and wonderful - especially "Panis Angelicus" - the most beautiful version of this sacred song I have ever heard in the whole of my life

5 out of 5 stars Incomparable and Irreplaceable.......2001-12-02

A strange mixture of arias and carols, but all wonderfully sung. Some rareties highlight this release: 3 carols recorded in the early 60s and not, I believe, released stateside before. Some thrilling sounds are on this CD.
