Breathe

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Nicholas Gunn has worked with global rhythms for most of his career, using them as a launching pad for exhilarating flute melodies. On Breathe, he ventures into Latin and Afro-Cuban grooves, crafting his finest album to date. By turns seductive and celebratory, Gunn leaves behind much of the sappy strings and smooth jazz snappiness that have marred earlier works. Instead, the focus is on the groove, constructed from a smorgasbord of hand-percussion, flute, keyboards, and vocals--all provided by Gunn himself. On tracks like the exuberant "Breathe" and the trancey "En El Templo Antiguo," he multi-tracks his voice, replacing what would usually be string pads with a wordless vocalesse that lends his music an earthier feel. It's not strictly a one man band, though. Gunn is joined on most tracks by violist Rachel Handlin for some gypsy moods, and acoustic guitarist John Bishoff, who injects a nouveau flamenco sound. It all comes together around Nicholas Gunn's flute, a melodic sprite that flies through music that is panoramic, if not outright cinematic, in scope. --John Diliberto

They set out to nail down a defining moment in their career, the MercyMe golden spike if you will. The goal for Coming Up to Breathe was a genre groundbreaking release such as Amy Grant's Lead Me On or U2's The Joshua Tree. While it's hard to go that far, it's safe to say that MercyMe's artistic integrity has met commercial appeal somewhere in the middle with Coming Up to Breathe. The one-time worship band certainly know how to write a hit and they bring us more of the same with radio-ready tracks like "So Long Self," "Last One Standing," and "Safe and Sound." But lead man Bart Millard digs a little deeper on the self-revealing "No More No Less" and "One Trick Pony." Lyrically both tracks reveal a band unapologetic about their faith and creative destiny. "Pony" is a pleasant divergence with its slide guitar and Mississippi mud atmosphere, conjuring up images of the band sitting at a crossroads somewhere in the Southland. MercyMe has never been afraid to show their musical influences on their sleeve. That's why you shouldn't be surprised by the Edge-like guitars on "Something About You" or even the pounding rhythm chords of "Hold Fast," which evoke Coldplay comparisons. So it's that struggle between creating something new and holding true to your principles that the band spells out for us. Perhaps Millard sums this up best on "3:42 AM (Writer's Block)" when he sings of a man out of words but not out of passion to allow God to speak through him. That's always been the aim of MercyMe and in this case, their hammer has driven this spike solidly into the ground. --Michael Lyttle

Album Description

Certain albums are obvious landmarks in the history of Christian music. These are the times when vision meets talent in a divine appointment that produces a collection of songs that help define an artist's career: WhiteHeart's 'Freedom', Amy Grant's 'Lead Me On', dcTalk's 'Jesus Freak', and Michael W. Smith's 'Eye 2 Eye', among others. MercyMe's new release, 'Coming Up to Breathe', is one of those albums. Singer Bart Millard is pleased with the success of MercyMe's previous albums, but admits there's a special satisfaction in this one. "We've always joked about wanting to make our 'Freedom' or 'Lead Me On', and time will tell if that is ever the case," Millard says, "but we just gave it everything we had. There was no holding back on this record. Regardless of what you are going through in life, regardless of what you are consumed with, regardless of what fills up your everyday life, there are times you have to stop and surface and take a deep breath and remember what's important. That's what this album is for us. It's addressing everything we've gone through and realizing the one common denominator in all this is Jesus. That's what is worth taking a breath for."

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff!.......2007-04-23

This is the first MercyMe album I've owned, so I can't give a thorough comparison to thier other cd's. I have listened to samples on Amazon, but I wasn't a big fan of what little I did hear, to be honest. The past albums sounded a bit too "pop/boy band-ish" for my taste. This album has a wonderful, positive message but with an organic, rockin sound that uplifts! I'm a big fan of music in general, and I have to say that this album can definitely compete (and outdo in some cases) with the 'secular' bands of today. Fans of good Christian rock would definitely love this album!

5 out of 5 stars Another hit!.......2007-04-10

In the true form of MercyMe, Coming Up To Breathe is another example of their unique musical abilities.
This group is tops!

5 out of 5 stars Mercy Me Rocks - or not.......2007-02-22

I'm not a big fan of rock music, but the music on Mercy Me's "Coming Up to Breathe" album is an exception.
The music is catchy, and the lyrics are right on in expressing the human conditon, yet lift the mind and the heart in praise.
The harmony on "Let Me Introduce Myself" and "Bring the Rain" are stunning, with the richness of the basses mixing so well with the lighter voices of the sopranos.
I thought it was extremely clever to write a song about the frustration of writing a song in "3:41 a.m.".
I think that this album is a valuable addition to the Christian contemporary music genre, and I'm anxious for Mercy Me to give us more.

5 out of 5 stars All Thumbs Up!.......2007-02-08

I have owned this cd for a while and the more you listen to it, the richer you discover it is.

Worthy of note is that musically, they have ventured and matured beyond (even though they didnt stray so far away) from their signature sound.

It is a great listen. The arrangements are very good, some are outright innovative. There is also more chart-like pop than rock than in their previous albums, a tiny Southern influence but in my opinion but it still great.

Best of all about this cd, and being a Catholic reviewer, I must say their theology is still very sound and undiluted.

I dont prefer the radio singles over the others. They are all equally powerful tracks. Some are just so eerily personal to me

Summarily, I love 'Coming Up to Breathe'. Mercy Me has scored again and I'm glad they are who they are.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff for a first-time listener.......2007-01-20

I never heard MercyMe's stuff before this album, so I don't have anything to compare it to, which I think is nice; it's good to have a fresh ear. I never knew they did "I Can Only Imagine." (I wasn't a big fan of that song, so it's just as well.) I just happened upon this CD one day, and bought it just for kicks. I'm so glad I did. Turns out I really, really enjoy it, and have listened to it over and over without getting tired of it.

This CD is uplifting, but it's also full of excellent music that I can jam to. Those back-up vocalists are fantastic; they add a really rich dimension to the sound that you can't get from paper-thin, generic arrangements that abound out there these days. It's just different enough to set it apart from other artists, but not so different that it alienates its listeners.

I like the message. I like the sound. That's really everything I could ask for.

5 out of 5 stars MY SECRET CD.......2007-06-17

This CD takes you on A journey. It calms me in rush-hour traffic, at home too. Great stress reducer. Best if you listen to it by yourself. Turn the lights low put your feet up and relax and perhaps it will take you on A journey, far beyond the flaming ramparts of the world and in mind and spirit traverse the boundless universe.

4 out of 5 stars Breathe.......2007-03-10

Very nice compilation of relaxing but slightly sensual music. A couple of songs are little romantic and go with a nice candle lite dinner. Very nice I recommend it, kind of similar to Enigma.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking Sensuality.......2007-03-06

Blue Stone's ethereal paradise is sensual and spiritual with vocal labyrinths in which to wander like a mist seeping through stillness. This is music in which to lose yourself and every stress you imagined you had before you put on your headphones. The heights and the depths of this album are all completely satisfying. If you love Delerium, Sleepthief or Evening Ocean, I think you will sink into this album, turn up the volume and dissolve into the sensation of sound. Breathe is magical and sexy with sensual whispery lyrics rich with lush gothic and world music appeal.

5 out of 5 stars Really good! .......2007-07-02

I heard big daddy for the first time in 2001! I was blessed by them and so were the entire crew that was with us. Their lyrics are honest and they are really good musicians to boot! On this albumn, the Rich Mullins song "Hold Me Jesus" is my favorite!

5 out of 5 stars This album rocks!.......2007-01-13

I have been a big fan of Big Daddy Weave for a long time, so when I saw their new album, "Every Time I Breathe" at Wal-Mart, I had to buy it. I listened to it and decided that it was one of the best cds I had found in a long time. I have listened to the song "Every Time I Breathe" over and over again and it still moves me every time i listen to it. The other 10 songs are nothing short of excellent as well. A great cd that is a little more mellow than their previous releases but still upbeat with uplifting lyrics. This cd is a definite keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Great Music to the Soul!.......2007-01-12

I can listen to this CD over and over and never get tired of it. It has an uplifting message and a catchy beat. The heart of the music keeps you coming back for more and going higher every time. You'll end up singing along and dancing in your seat.

5 out of 5 stars sweet, sincere band with soft hearts for the KING of Kings!.......2007-01-02

This album is incredible & very well balanced. It comes off a little more mellow than previous efforts, and just as Christ-exalting! Like Chris Tomlin, the vocals are softer and gentler than many bands, but do not lose the punchy edge that keeps big daddy weave the upbeat, Spirit-filled quintet they are. As on stage, so it is with this album, the joy of the LORD flows from the music these guys put together! PRAISE GOD! as they sing on 'every time i breathe', "...everytime i get another glimpse of Your heart, i realize, it's True; that You are so marvelous God! and i am so in love with You!..." 'all for you' rejoices in the miracle of New Life in Christ! 'when i see You' is a beautiful, melodic testament to the transforming power of Christ Jesus in the life of a believer! Praise the LORD He never lets go of His own!!! The bubbling reconstruction of the familiar hymn, 'trust and obey' is really pleasing, and breathes new life into this wonderful, God-honoring song! Of course the remakes of the Maranatha! Singers' 'let it rise', and Rich Mullins' classic, heart-felt 'hold me Jesus', are very rich, also. This is an record full of wonderful treasures. You will not regret buying this as a seasoned fan of big daddy weave, OR as a gentle introduction to this talented and sincere band's records... and DO NOT pass up the awesome experience of seeing them in concert! a WONDERFUL and ROCKIN' time, indeed!

5 out of 5 stars Let It Rise.......2006-09-27

The first time I heard "Let It Rise", which incidentaly was when they performed it live at a concert I was at, I was moved. This is another great album for BDW. Could not wait to grab a copy upon its release. Love the horns on one of the tracks, and the violin too, they add just the right flavor. "Let the songs of the Lord, rise among us!" Thanks BDW!

From the suggestive series of photos in the CD's packaging to the aerobicized dance-floor workouts within, Faith Hill refuses to concede an inch of crossover dominance to Shania Twain. Except for a seductive duet with husband Tim McGraw on "Let's Make Love" and an occasional pinch of fiddle or steel guitar, there's little here to characterize Hill as a country artist. As pop, the results range from pretty ("Breathe," "Love Is a Sweet Thing") to pretty slight ("I Got My Baby," "If My Heart Had Wings") to borderline inane ("Bringing Out the Elvis," the voyeuristic twist of "The Way You Love Me"). Though Hill's version of Bruce Springsteen's "If I Should Fall Behind" is admirably understated, too much of the album substitutes surface dazzle for emotional depth. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars nice, after all..........2007-07-31

I got to say that I've always loved Faith so much (and still do!) but although I like the most of the the songs she chose for BREATHE, I think she should've remained closer to her previous albums. Well, I like BREATHE, but I don't like the fact the she turned her back to country music!

3 out of 5 stars Great Cover Photo, if Only the Songs were as Good.......2007-07-06

Faith slipped on this album from previous albums. This definitely has a stronger pop/lite rock flavor than previous work, with even some jazz hints. Not that it's bad to try a different genre. The actual songs themselves, however, try to much to be sweet and treacly. They are not substantial or inventive either. Here are the only real standouts:

Way You Love Me - spirited country/pop [like I said, genre is not the problem] tune. Best song on this album.

If My Heart Had Wings - spirit and force

There Will Come a Day - actually inspirational and spiritual

The album doesn't suck, but there's no real enthusiasm about popping it into the player.

3 out of 5 stars Sounds Good.......2006-07-07

I Don't have this cd by faith (i have cry which is a great one) but it sounds good except for two one i can't remember and brining out the elvis not that they are bad songs (i believe that there is no such thing as bad music) i just don't like them. i like faith's pop and country sides. but anyway it sounds good

1 out of 5 stars Shocked.......2006-06-14

I purchased the CD. I own other CD's by Faith Hill. The best way to evaluate satisfaction is to ask the question: "If you had another chance to order the CD being evaluated, would you order the CD. My reply is no. The voice and the background music do not sound like the Faith Hill that I hear in the CD's that I own.

5 out of 5 stars amazing record, still her best.......2006-05-19

I didn't know anything bout Faith before i picked this CD, and that's where my love to modern-country music started its life. I was really impressed at how great this album sounded and still does. The first track "What's in in for me" immediately cristalyzes the paradigm of still-not too much country, not pop either. The following song are just as good as the first one, and of course "Breathe" is a stand-out track, which sounds amazing no matter how many tome you're listening to it. And the perfection if the song also lies in the other mixes, which are not less good than the original. However, the inclusion of silly "Bringing out the Elvis" sounds like a mistake on here, but a small one, which doesn't spoil the general listenability of the record. That said, it's still her best album, which stays in the same league with "Come on Over" and and maybe even better.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute classic album from the mega-talented Breathe.......2006-12-02

As long as I live I'll never tire of this fantastic album. These guys knew how to write a song. The quality of the music here on every song is just out of this world, with a highly professional sound. These were serious musicians who unfortunately didn't become huge (although they should have).

But I admit that I'm a little biased, for the reason that "Hands To Heaven" is here, my favorite song of all time. And it literally took me about 10 years to discover which band performed it. I became obsessed with this song the very first time I heard it, but didn't know who performed it. I must have sung the words to at least 40 different people, yet none of them knew the song. And then finally, several years ago, someone at a record store knew it and pointed me to the album. I was fortunate enough to find it while it was still in print. Sadly it is out of print now, and it will cost you a pretty penny to get it. But it's worth every cent. I suggest also checking eBay-I've seen it pop up there from time to time. Also recommend is Breathe's other album, Peace Of Mind, which I think is also out of print. Not quite as strong as All That Jazz, but still definitely worthy of tracking down.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2006-05-20

I remember buying this on audio cassette as a kid, and I loved it. I recently came across the tape again and gave it another listen, and, as an adult, I have a newfound appreciation for it. The songs are smooth, easy to listen to, and catchy! Almost everyone remembers How Can I Fall and Hands To Heaven, but the album has much more to offer than that. All This I Should Have Known and Don't Tell Me Lies are two more incredible songs. The music sounds great, and the lyrics are excellent. Definitely worth listening to, and buying!! (Also great music for wining and dining!)

4 out of 5 stars They are an unforgettable band. .......2006-04-18

When I was a student, I listened their album and felt so good.
They are very special band.

5 out of 5 stars Back Together Someday ...........2006-01-22

I give this album 5 stars just for "Hands To Heaven" alone since I play it every night while thinking about my boyfriend who is far away in the Middle East right now. I play that song to bring hope that I'll see him again. Some of my other favorites are not only "How Can I Fall?" but also "Won't You Come Back", "Monday Morning Blues","All This I Should Have Known" - heck virtually the entire album!

On another note, I have a lot of my friends who did not grow up here when they were younger, so I always have to play what they missed during the 80s (I'm grew up here in the US). While they are familiar with Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Prince, Breathe is not well known in my social circles. However, I only need to play the 2 most popular songs "Hands To Heaven" and "How Can I Fall" to for them to fall in love with the group. You can tell when songs are timeless when a person who has never heard them instantly become fans nearly 20 years after they are released!

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable hits from the 80's!!!!!.......2005-10-16

I was 9 years old when this c.d. came out and obviously didn't remember a lot being I was a kid. But when I turned 15, the memories kicked in! HANDS TO HEAVEN is no doubt a true classic!!! I remember when they would play this on the radio station, I would sit on my desk in my room, open up the blinds, stare at the beautiful sunset, and would think about the girl I was in love with. It might sound weird but it just gave me courage to get up and take a chance with her. Well, it's been 12 long years, I've been in the military, and the rest is history..... However, HANDS TO HEAVEN just has the words and music to relax and basically put anybody in cloud nine mode. Thank you Breathe for the great music/memories and may GOD richly bless you all. (...)

5 out of 5 stars The best Switchfoot cd. .......2007-01-27

This cd is by far the best of all of Switchfoot's cds. With amazing lyrics and gorgeous melodies, it's one that you'll never get tired of listening to. For those who have only recently jumped on the Switchfoot bandwagon, you'll recognize "Dare You to Move" on this cd, in it's original (and better) form. Every song on this cd has a great message, and is worth listening to over and over. Every fan should own this album.

5 out of 5 stars If I cold I would give it 9999999 stars!!!!.......2006-02-18

My all time favorite cd from this band. It includes Switchfoot's biggest hit "Dare you to move". I liked this the first time I heard it, and it remains my favorite cd. This is a must for any Switchfoot fan.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Collection.......2005-10-13

Learning to Breathe is a very enjoyable album. It contains some very interesting and good music along with good vocals and positive lyrics.

The words in this CD are definitely focused on the Creator of the Universe. Here are some examples of lyrics:

Learning to Breathe - I'm finding that You and You alone can break my fall.

You Already Take Me There - You meet me where I am, forgive me where I am.

Love Is The Moment - Why God gave His life to put motion inside my soul. It's bigger than cold religion. It's bigger than life.

There are really no bad songs in this collection. Two that are real standouts are Dare You To Move and Learning To Breathe.

If you like Christian music, this is a good album to get. If you like Switchfoot, it is a must have. If you are not in either of the above categories, I'd recommend it anyway. It is a very creative effort and you will likely enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars It's the music that matters.......2005-07-06

"I Dare You to Move" first drew me to this band and so of course I had to check the other little music clips Amazon provides. Learning to Breathe is a little less polished then The Beautiful Letdown, but in a nice way. It actually works better for this album I think.
Musically, Switchfoot has a very distinctive and gripping sound. Most of their lyrics avoid direct subject references that can turn some people off to secular music, and so this album stands on it's own because the music is just great.

4 out of 5 stars Switchfoot's 3rd album: A solid album.......2005-07-05

I first listened to 'Dare You To Move' from the movie 'A Walk To Remember' and I was instantly wanting to know more about this band so I purchased their album 'The Beautiful Letdown' and since that first time of listening to that album I was hooked. This self professed christian trio have not let down fans with this their 3rd album but have cemented themselves as a must listen band in the soft-rock genre. The first 4 songs of this album is the reason I gave the album 4 stars in rating cause in my opinion the 4 songs are some of the best that Switchfoot have created. 'Learning To Breath' takes your breath away, it is intoxicating. Another great song is track 4 'Love Is the Movement' which sounds more anthem popish than rock. This is a less spiritual feel to the album than the first 2 Switchfoot album but there is a feeling of messages of hope for youth and those who are facing problems that seem to big. Another nice song is 'The Loser' which would not be out of place on one of those sappy teenage romance films in vogue at the moment. This album is for all christian band fans and soft rock genre fans in general.

5 out of 5 stars SCOTT'S BEST CD YET.......2007-07-18

This is a very well done and entertaining CD. I just purchased it about a week ago, and I absolutely love it. This is without a doubt, Randy Scott's best CD yet, and I believe he is definitely about to explode big time on the smooth jazz scene. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Take a deep breath..........2007-07-12

...and plunge right into this awesome cd by Randy Scott. Like Paul Taylor? Walter Beasley? Good music? You must hear this, buy this, download this into your everyday ipod, in your car, in your system music. From Breathe, to Bliss, to probably the best rendition of Mo' Better Blues (the 2nd best thing about the movie -Denzel, #1 - is this cut and Randy's version is pure and perfect) I have ever heard, this cd shows that Mr. Scott is a soulful, sax-savvy brotha who needs to be heard by those who like their jazz sweet and smooth and musically on point. You have to hear this. And Breathe.

Reba McEntire's first album in four years finds the spunky redhead (and sitcom star) thinking like a singer again. Where she'd virtually burned out, doing too many albums a year, she's now thoughtful about her material, updating her repertoire with the hill-country radio hit, "I'm Gonna Take That Mountain," while also drawing on the kinds of meaty ballads that propelled her to diva-ness. If "Moving Oleta," a nursing home tale of love, is too squishy a topic for most folks, McEntire seems to be saying that it's high time we looked unflinchingly at a full range of relationships beyond the standard romantic fare. To that end, there's the woman-to-woman song, "My Sister," the pained adoption tale of "Secret," and the bittersweet "He Gets That From Me," a tribute to families who lost loved ones on 9/11. By the time McEntire mixes in some uptempo dance tunes, a gospel number, and a straight-country waltz, she's delivered an album that's a combination of all of the types of music she's recorded over the past 25 years. Thankfully she keeps her trademark vocal curlicues to a minimum, which allows guests Alison Krauss, Union Station vocalist/guitarist Dan Tyminski, and Vince Gill to sweeten the sound. But it's really all Reba, in a very classy return. --Alanna Nash

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars first CD in 4 years.......2007-07-15

This is Reba's First CD in four years and it was a long awaited project. The first single "I'm Gonna Take That Mountain" is very upbeat and about how she can take anything on and get it done. The 2nd single "Somebody" is my favorite track on the CD. It is a very beautiful love story about a man who talks to a woman about all of his troubles with relationships and they both do not realize that they are falling in love with each other day by day until one day they meet eye to eye and they finally realize it.
The 3rd single "He Gets That From Me" is about a son that has characteristics of his father and mother. You do not know what happened to the dad in the video until the very end when they go to the graveyard to visit the father's grave. Breath taking video if you ask me and is also very sad. The 4th single "My Sister" is about 2 sisters that are best friends but are miles apart and they call each other from time to time. 2 other songs on this CD that are moving are "Moving Oleta" and "Sky Full Of Angels"

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!.......2007-02-06

Okay, I'm not 13 OKAY?! I'm 16, just doin' this so it will be a whole lot quicker! Year born: 91! (proof enough????)

*Okay anyway... I absolutely love this album. The particular song that I absolutely love is "Secret" I can totally relate to it. I was gave up for adoption... so put two and two together and there ya go ;)

Anyone who wants a GREAT album, with the greatest Country-Western female singer since Pasty Cline then this is definitely the perfect one for ya!

4 out of 5 stars Nice CD.......2007-02-01

I must admit that i miss her waltzes, and her early music. But for the more "modern" country, this cd is one of the more listenable.

3 out of 5 stars A BIG IMPROVEMENT OVER HER NINETIES STUFF.......2005-10-24

She needed a breather. After all, she had too many irons in the fire what with Broadway (a sham....) and her Hollywood phase (Reba is no actress, sorry). But she is a darn good singer and this CD, despite one of the most unflattering CD covers that has ever graced her CDs, shows that Reba, when given great material to work with can still deliver the goods. Not all the songs are first rate though. If they were, I'd be giving this CD 5 stars instead of 3. "Secret" which heads off the record has some good lyrics but a terrible melody. Same with "My Sister". But things improve with "If I Had Any Sense Left at All", "Once You've Learned to Be Lonely" and "Sky Full of Angels". I could have done without "Love Revival". "He Gets that From Me" is good but not memorable. The duet with Vince Gill is good too but not up to par with "Oklahoma Swing" or "The Heart Won't Lie". "Moving Oleta" and "Room to Breathe" are the two best cuts on here but their melodies and arrangements are almost identical. "Somebody" was a number one single for her and its growing on me slowly but surely. All in all this is a big improvement over most of the stuff she put out in the nineties which was some of the worst music I ever heard.

4 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN ANYTHING SHE'S DONE SINCE "FOR MY BROKEN HEART".......2005-10-16

This CD is quite good, especially since Reba product of the mid to late nineties is quite bad. This one has only one bad song on it..."Secret"....the lyrics are good but what good are lyrics if the melody has no substance and the production are mediocre?? The rest of the CD is substantial with quite a few outstanding cuts on here! "If I Had Any Sense", "Room to Breathe", "Somebody" and especially "Moving Oleta" are all great! The highlight are Reba's bluegrass tunes "I'm Gonna Take that Mountain" and I especially love "Sky Full of Angels" (my favorite song on the CD). Its great!

Texas roadhouse veteran Delbert McClinton hit upon his masterful mix of country, blues, and R&B stylings decades ago, but it took the Grammy-winning 2001 release, Nothing Personal, to fully showcase his talents. Room to Breathe, once again benefiting from a diverse selection of original McClinton songs, updates and embellishes the approach with most of the same participants present. McClinton uses his classic blue-eyed-soul voice with full authority and more than a little eclecticism, bouncing through "Blues About You, Baby" with an almost Jerry Lee Lewis boogie feel, while infusing the snaky "Jungle Room" with laid-back nightclub coolness. "Ain't Lost Nothin'," cowritten with producer Gary Nicholson and harp hero Kim Wilson, is the purest blues expression, although the piano-led ballad "Everything I Know About the Blues," a McClinton-Nicholson tune cowritten by Heartbreaker Benmont Tench, also works well. McClinton rocks through "Same Kind of Crazy," gets funky on "The Rub," and even conjures a distant Lynryd Skynyrd echo on the uptempo "Money Honey." Yet his biggest effort is saved for the star-studded sing-along "Lone Star Blues," a tribute to Texas complete with fiddle and pedal steel guitar and featuring an anthemic country chorus from a host of famous McClinton friends and fans. --Michael Point

3 out of 5 stars solid, professional and really good.......2005-10-19

This is one of those records that is tough to rate on a scale of 1-5 stars. It's not as good a project as One of the Fortunate Few, Never Been Rocked Enough or Nothing Personal. So you can't give it four or five stars, but it's better than three stars which seems to be an journeyman perfomance.

Perhaps the most valuable service Delbert provides to us (other than making some of the best music available) is showing how fine the line is between r&B and country.Unfortunately as a result he only gets played when he shows up on IMUS in the Morning.

Definately one to own-but make sure you have "Fortunate Few" and "Never Been Rocked Enough" too.

5 out of 5 stars Triple Threat!.......2005-07-28

It's rare that you find a single CD with such force.
Dilbert writes these songs with a sharp insight into the
human condition...'witness what I said he done.', and
'that woman's the same kind of crazy as me!'.
Clever arranging prevents any let down as tunes spin by,
then, as always, McClinton performance is peerless.
Challenge: Find a single number that doesn't work!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2003-05-21

"Don't Want To Love You Anymore" is worth price of album. Starkly simple, elegant, and the saddest love song I've ever heard. (This should have been the single!)

5 out of 5 stars True Confessions.......2003-02-08

I have to confess something. I made a mistake. Delbert's new CD was released in September. While I always get each of his releases, I put this one on hold because of a professional review, "...on Room to Breathe ... a sense of going through the paces permeates the project. Chord progressions are predictable...not much compositional substance is evident." This guy must be hearing a different CD than the one I get; I'm sorry I waited 5 months!

Delbert McClinton's "Room to Breathe" is an excellent accomplishment. Delbert went through a creative period where he turned out a lot of songs and was ready to head back to record within a year after "Nothing Personal." 4 tracks are instant classics. The opener "Same Kind of Crazy" bounces with a great punching rhythm section, "Ain't no doubt about it; she's the same kind of crazy as me." "Everything I Know About the Blues" (I learned from you) is a slow burn that has "standard" written all over it with Todd Sharp's bluesy piano and Kevin McKendree doing some very classy strings on this track. If Etta James doesn't record this, I'm gonna lose a BIG bet. "Blues About You" is a great boogie woogie, "The hardest thing honey 'bout having' the blues, like I'm walkin' the floor in a dead man's shoes." "Ain't Lost Nothin'" has that great Jimmy Reed kind of beat with Lynn Williams' drums propelling this burning rocking blues. The other tracks including "Don't Want to Love You" are also great. So my advice is to not try to compare this Delbert CD to his others because, quite frankly, he's consistently brilliant! So plunk down the spare change and get some room to breathe! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars the great mcclinton does it again - and even better!.......2003-01-20

Delbert McClinton has, to my knowledge, never mad a bad record. He even took up a few songs I thought nobody would dare touch, like PleasePleasePlease or Have a little faith in me, or Let the good times roll. Everyone thought the originals were impossible to beat, but he did it.
And this man gets better and better with age. It's unbelievable. This is his very best album yet.
His gritty, relaxed voice is doing great, the band plays with a nice rough edge, the songs are great and it's a fantastic album.
I've played it again and again in different ways, and it keeps getting better. For instance: I think Money Honey doesn't last long enough, it should keep on rolling for at least half an hour, so I put it on repeat. That's when you start to find the subtleties in this music, and you never get bored.
This man should be world famous.
