Editorial Reviews

It is a beautiful world, though perhaps not the honey-colored, sunshine-dappled landscape that the title might imply. More than blossoming flowers and gentle breezes, Patrick O'Hearn paints a picture that embraces the dank, fecund undergrowth where life is formed. His music is textural, roiling with atmosphere, but not buried in it. Joined once again by longtime musical compatriot, guitarist Peter Maunu, O'Hearn conjures up Ennio Morricone dipped in an ambient bath on tracks like "Magnificent River." His electro-grooves range from the sensual on "Facing the Sun" to the demonic on "Night Becomes Her." Taking a cue from Erik Satie simplicity, O'Hearn employs melody sparingly, as if he's hoarding the last bottle of water in the Sahara. Which makes it all the more powerful when he finally deploys it creating the crescendo of the title track. A former bassist with Frank Zappa, member of the pop band Missing Persons, and a charter member of the new age Private Music label, O'Hearn's breadth of experience has always set him apart from his peers and that's still apparent on Beautiful World. --John Diliberto

It's been a long ten years since Take That disbanded. Their recent reformation and world tour offered overwhelming evidence that, far from being forgotten, the post-Robbie quartet can still command hysterical amounts of goodwill and adoration. Beautiful World illustrates why this is so. Written in conjunction with songwriter/producer John Shanks (Ashlee Simpson, Anastacia, Alanis Morissette), the album is crammed full with the songwriting magic that made their rise to fame so meteoric in the first place. Far from being an exercise in nostalgia, the project moves the band in a slightly new direction. The four come across as more mature, more democratic (all members share songwriting credits on the album, rather than just Barlow), and even more adept at making epic pop that somehow avoids the cheese factor. Lead single "Patience" is a perfect example of how powerful and accessible their songs can be. It'd be a good contender for the album's peak moment if the rest of the tracks weren't so damn good too. With traditional Take That style songs (the immediately likeable "Reach Out", the brimming "Like I Never Loved You At All"), nicely punctuated up by incongruous o Teac 52X COMBO KIT WITH NERO BEIGE ( DW552G/KIT )

Electronics a bonus track that appears shorty after Boat fades out titled Butterfly, a sweet catchy ballad written by Gary.

Beautiful World might not be as great as Everything Changes or Nobody Else, and Take That might not be as young and exciting as they were once. The album does lack the typical Take That dance and upbeat tracks along with the piano-driven ballads that made past efforts much more balanced. However, their return with this album deserves a very warm welcome. I'm sure the fans will agree!

So I will end by saying: Take That, welcome back...and hopefully, for good this time!

This come-back release for Take That is absolutely superb. You would never have guessed that they were ever gone from the music scene for the past few years. The tunes are right on with today's hits yet it retains the sound that made the group a hit in the past. You would never have guessed that Robbie Williams is no longer a part of the ensemble. Take That is positively right on.

Comparisons generally stink, but sometimes they're so obvious that they're inevitable. So it is with L.A. native and blue-eyed soul man Robin Thicke. Equal parts Remy Shand and Jamiroquai--though funkier than the former and less knuckleheaded than the latter--Thick's Cherry Blue Skies staggers through the speakers with moxie to spare. Opening track "Oh Shooter"--which finds Thicke drawling lazily while tires screech in the background--is a bait-and-switch for what's to come. By "Sugar Mama," Thicke is outfitted in the proverbial white suit and fedora, slinking around the edges of the groove and wailing in a falsetto like some funk-soul cat from the '70s. Levity plays an essential role in the formula, too; "Make a Baby" is as silly a love song as its title suggests, and "When I Get You Alone" steals wholesale from Walter Murphy's disco-era novelty hit, "A Fifth of Beethoven." But the dance floor is only one destination in Thicke's view. Earnest ballads also appear (notably, the sweetly sentimental, minor-chord lament "The Stupid Things"), and one is again inclined toward another comparison, this time to Stevie Wonder. Funky, jazzy soul-pop, with a touch of salsa in "Vengas Con Migo"; that's as accomplished as it is welcoming. --Kim Hughes

    5 out of 5 stars Smooth...................2007-05-14

As a percussionist, I really appreciate music that provides a smooth groove. This album definitely does a good job of that. A classic R&B feel with a new funky vibe.

5 out of 5 stars Had to get it.......2007-04-21

I am newly into Thicke and had to buy up all his music. This cd is great, funkier and younger. Fantastic R&B.

    5 out of 5 stars A New Favorite!!!.......2007-04-12

if you looked past this album thinking "another Disco remake"...u were sadly mistaken! Nice intro for one of music's future voices. This cd had me from the begining track "o'h shooter"..."let's make a baby" makes me think Beatles...Jamiroquai and Prince are naturally going to be artists Thicke will be compared to and hopefully with time and more great music he'll have earned it...when i get you alone was the song pushed on the radio but that's just one style he displays. Disco meets dance and parties with Funk is this guy's style!!! love the tracks "the stupid things" ..."She's Gangsta" and he goes to a Latin theme/flava on "vengas conmigo"...i love this whole album! sweet, smooth vocals...Robin Thicke is much more than Alan Thicke's boy!!!

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THICKE.......2007-03-28

I don't know what took so long for everyone to catch on to Robin Thicke cuz his music is great!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-03-21

I actually purchased Thicke's first album, The Evolution of Robin Thicke, before I bought this one. They are both completely different sounding albums, maybe it was the haircut. But Robin Thicke has THE best voice I have EVER heard from ANY artist. I can't believe there is even one negative comment about this album. How much better can R&B get people??? If your disrespecting this album then your reviewing the wrong genre of music. His range and variation of styles from song to song are amazing. Oh and lets not forget this is his first album!!! If you love upbeat r&b and a great voice i promise you you'll like this. Don't read the less than 5 star reviews, your just wasting your time.

If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of "The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. --Jerry McCulley

I'm very new to Sarah brightman's music and I enjoy this CD. I think she has an amazing voice. Very talented young woman and this cd was very relaxing and joyful to listen to. I like to learn and heard more from Sarah Brightman.

3 out of 5 stars Stranger in Paradise - More Like Stranger in a Lost Cause.......2006-12-30

I'm not throughly pleased with this album! This CD is only good if you know how to dance in a Middle-Easters fashion. About half of each track is dominated by all orchestrations and no Sarah. Plus, Pop-Sarah isn't really for me. I much prefer the Classical-Sarah. Some of the tracks are okay, like "Harem", "The Journey Home", "Beautiful", and "Stranger in Paradise". Really, this is a good CD for your collection, but I wouldn't listen to it on a 24/7 basis.

5 out of 5 stars No voice like hers in the world.......2006-10-01

I own this cd. I saw her in person at the "Harem" concert. Never had I heard or seen any voice like this. What a performer, best concert I'd ever seen. Beautiful voice, I can never get enough of Sarah Brightman's music. It is so comforting at times. I have all her music and this cd makes you wonder, how can she top this? Thank you Sarah Brightman for giving us your beautiful gift of music.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Brightman, Her best CD........2006-09-18

Sarah is just the best, she can hit any note and her individuality shines on this CD. She sings "The Journey Home" from the musical Bombay Dreams and her voice just soars. "Harem", "Mysterious Ways" and "You Take My Breah Away" are songs that take me to dreamland. Amazing! A master piece!

5 out of 5 stars Baby Galileo Review.......2006-03-18

I love all of the Baby Einstein DVD's, so the music CD has been just as good as the DVD's. I play it all the time when my son is in the car and it seems to calm him and keep his attention. I even listen to it in the car when my son is not with me. It is relaxing and soothing. I definitely recommend the CD's for the car.

          Amazon.com Product Description

If your pocketbook says economy but your heart says power, why not consider the all-new Toshiba A45-S151 Notebook PC? At little more than the cost of a bargain-basement unit, the Toshiba A45-S151 delivers plenty of speed, ample storage space and wireless communication. Multimedia fans and true power users should investigate one of Toshiba's many upscale models, but budget-minded shoppers won't find a much better bang for the buck than this, one of Toshiba's newest midlevel notebooks.

Driven by a snappy 2.8 GHz Intel Celeron processor and a solid 512 MB RAM memory, the Satellite A45-S151 offers enough raw power for the vast majority of personal, leisure and business tasks, and easy multitasking too. Toshiba has also equipped the system with a 32 MB Intel 852GME graphics controller. Though not ideal for high-end 3-D games, this chipset will allow you to efficiently play older and less demanding games and perform some 3-D graphics work. This level of 3-D capability is uncommon in this price range.

Measuring 13.2 by 11.7 by 1.9 inches and weighing in at 7.7 pounds, the Satellite A45-S151 is of average size -- less bulky than a "desktop replacement" unit but nearly double the weight of some of today's lightweight tablets and ultra-compact notebooks. Inside, you'll find a large 60 GB hard disk, a full-size 85-key keyboard with 12 hotkeys, a midsize 15-inch XGA TFT active-matrix display capable of 1024 by 768 resolution, and a convenient DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and listen to audio CDs, archive files, and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. If you wish to burn DVDs, you'll either need to upgrade or utilize an external DVD writer.

As to be expected in this price range, connectivity options are only fair. The system features a traditional 56K modem port for dial-up communication and an RJ-45 LAN port for high-speed networking, but does not include wireless facilities or an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (normally used for fast downloads from digital camcorders). Furthermore, Toshiba has fitted the unit with four traditional USB ports rather than the new USB 2.0 standard, thus limiting data streaming speed from external devices such as digital cameras and the like.

The bundled software package features Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Microsoft's Works productivity suite, and Intuit's Quicken New User Edition 2004 financial center. In ideal conditions, battery life is estimated at an impressive 2.9 hours.

5 out of 5 stars Great laptop and great value.......2004-07-10

This is my second Toshiba laptop and I'm very happy with the purchase. My first one is over 4 years old and still has no problems, but I decided it was time to upgrade and purchased this laptop and it's lived up to my expectations. Performance is fast and the big screen is great, I haven't used a desktop in years and do all my work for internet development on this laptop. The wireless connection is excellent and the keyboard is comfortable. I've seen other friends' laptops go bad or the touchpad/mouse function go awry, but not my Toshiba. There's some easy software that comes with it to write to CDs, and I played a DVD on it and the picture was sharp. It is heavy, but as a desktop substitute, I don't mind it.

          4 out of 5 stars Toshiba A45 S151 Big Beauty.......2004-06-08

This is our first fully funtional laptop. Previous units have always sacrificed power, flexibility, and or speed for size/portability. Can be used as a desktop replacement, BUT is HUGE for daily transportation. Do NOT suggest for someone who must be joined at hip to computer at all times. Given this reality - this unit is GREAT!!
Does everything required of it; and does it EXTREMELY well.
Keyboard is about the most substantial I've seen on a notebook; layout of ports is mostly excellent -only complaint is re. use of USB 1 instead of newer 2.0. All in all a GREAT BIG TREAT to use.

I pretty much agree with the other reviews. The computer is awesome, Toshiba keeps showing it is the leader. Esthetically way superior than Dell, great reliability and with an straighforward installation process. BUT... I would only note that in my opinion the computer is not for everyday trips school-home. It is kind of heavy and actually I found that most backpack-style computer cases do not fit this computer without being really pushed to their capacity limits (or even beyond them). Suggestion: compare carefully the dimensions of this computer and of any backpack or case you may be considering.

It is basically a Great desktop replacement.

            Amazon.com Product Description

Not everyone needs a high-end, high cost notebook. A midlevel workhorse that offers solid but certainly not spectacular amenities and speed, the Toshiba Satellite A45-S121 Notebook PC delivers CD burning, DVD playing, reasonable 3-D performance, a very affordable price point and enough muscle for day-to-day personal and light business tasks. Power users should definitely look toward one of Toshiba's more upscale machines, but budget-minded shoppers may just find the economical Satellite A45-S121 more than meets their requirements.

Driven by a cost-effective 2.8 GHz Intel Celeron processor and a nominal 256 MB RAM, the Satellite A45-S121 isn't designed for complex multitasking or demanding state-of-the-art applications. However, it will easily handle general chores such as word processing, personal finances, electronic communications and Internet browsing. Surprisingly, Toshiba has equipped this comparatively inexpensive system with a 32 MB Intel 852GME graphics controller. Though not ideal for high-end 3-D games, this chipset will allow you to efficiently play older and less demanding games and perform some 3-D graphics work. This level of 3-D capability is uncommon in this price range.

Measuring 13.2 by 11.7 by 1.9 inches and weighing in at 7.7 pounds, the Satellite A45-S121 is of average size -- less bulky than a "desktop replacement" unit but nearly double the weight of some of today's lightweight tablets and ultra-compact notebooks. Inside, Toshiba has included a 40 GB hard disk, a full-size 85-key keyboard with 12 hotkeys, a midsize 15-inch XGA TFT active-matrix display capable of 1024 by 768 resolution, and a convenient DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and listen to audio CDs, archive files, and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Workhorse Machine.......2007-01-31

I bought my Toshiba A45-S121 in December 2004, and within a month upgraded the hard disk to 100 Gb, and decided to go all the way with 2 Gb of RAM. With both upgrades installed, this laptop performs flawlessly, without a single complain running intensive CPU and 3D applications, like 3D Studio Max, Lightwave 3D and e-Frontier Poser.

In my personal setting, I use in the road my A45 with 2 external USB drives (160 Gb each) and a trackball, getting 2 hours of battery life (up to 3 without them). The machine is easily serviceable by the user (adding memory modules, changing the hard disk and cleaning the CPU heatsink requires just a few minutes), and there's the possibility to replace or upgrade the CPU by yourself.

The contrast in the screen might be my only complain, but then again this is a bussiness-oriented machine, rather than a gaming PC. The battery life you can get is simply outstanding, because of the synergy between the low power consumption CPU and LCD screen. Expect no less than 2 hours of battery in most conditions.

In my experience, this is a VERY reliable laptop, and with the proper upgrades (cheap ones) it can outperform more expensive systems with ease.

I just finished the installation of Suse Linux 9.1 Professional from a DVD (just paid $10 bundled with the December/ 04 edition of Linux PRO magazine) on my Toshiba Satellite A45-S121 laptop, here are the main specs for the laptop:Intel Celeron 2800 Mhz , upgraded 496 MB of memory, 40 GB HDD, Teac DVD/CD-RW Combo drive, integrated Intel 82852/82855 32 MB graphics adapter, Toshiba software modem, SoundMAX integrated audio, Intel PRO/100 Ethernet controller, 1024X768@60 Hz native LCD screen resolution, ALPS Electric touchpad, 4 USB 1.1 Ports, one Parallel port and a VGA output.During the intallation the Intel integrated video was recognized as an Intel 852 GM with no problems as well as the audio as a Toshiba 82801DB AC'97 audio device, to my surprise the winmodem was recognized as a Toshiba 82801DB but was not configured by default, I did configured it at a later time using YaST2 with the included Smart-link modem driver that is not installed by default, the modem is working flawlessly at /dev/ttySL0 using Kinternet in KDE. The Intel PRO/100 Ethernet controler was properly recognized and configured as a Toshiba 82801DB PRO/100 VE controller, however, I have not tested a high speed internet connection at this time. The LCD screen was configured as a VESA 800X600 resolution which I later changed using SaX2 to a LCD at 1024X768@60 Hz, the scroll section on the touchpad does not work. I downloaded and installed the Firefox 1.0 web browser, as well as many security patches from Suse using the "online update" feature in YaST2. Overall this is a decent, quiet and very reliable computer at a good price.Peace.

5 out of 5 stars excellent pc notebook.......2004-10-19

Alot of people have recomended the sony laptop saying that its the best brand, but I think that the Toshiba A45-S121 Notebook which has a 40 GB hard drive is better. Its the fastest its less expensive and more cost efficient.
Its more reliable especially when your online it doesn't freeze up or take up to much time when loading a page.It has a 15 inch lcd screen high resolution screen 1024 by 768 and it has a built in dvd and cd\rw drive so you can download and copy music files and programes and games etc, on cd.
The Port is a USB 2.0 and is four times faster than the regular port.
It's very useful especialy for programes like word processor, excell or Abode photoshop cs used for graphic designing so its for the work place, but it cannot be used for games because it doesn't support a high resolution graphics or 3d engine although some older games might work.

3 out of 5 stars Well made and good performance, but with a few glitches........2004-05-28

Purchased the A45-S121 yesterday(Memorial Day Weekend) to check it out and compare to the CPQ 2199US, and here are my 2 cents.
            Pro:
            - Well built and different design from the rest.
            - Intel 852/855GME chipset, this could ensure future support for next generation and other Operating Systems, unlike the ATI/VIA chipset on the 2199US which may be drop by CPQ/HP once they come out with a new line of notebooks. Example, Intel released a driver for the 852 on 3/04, while the ATI driver is dated 6/03 and can only be optained from Compaq since ATI won't support their IGP 320M.
            - 4 x USB 2.0, this is the standard and every notebook should have at least 3 ports. USB 1.1 is more than 3 years old and notebook makers like CPQ/HP should keep up with the rest of the industry instead of pushing an outdated technology.
            - Intel Celeron 2.8Ghz, 256MB RAM & 40GB 4200RPM HD, "diehard" fan of AMD may be suprise of this CPU with 128Kb cache and 240MB of system memory performs as well as the AMD XP-M. Boot up time and overall usage of the system is a little slower than the 2199US, but with 240MB left(16MB for Video) it does a good job even when playing games or opening several applications at once, probably will give credit to the Intel chipset here again.
            - Battery seems to last around 3Hrs with normal usage like surfing and word processing.
            - Video card has good performance, with only 16MB got an 1700 score with 3DMark01 @ 1024x768x32 almost the same as the ATI IGP on the 2199US.
            - Most people claim that the support and service from Toshiba is far superior than HP/CPQ, can't account for that since I only had these systems for a few hours.
            - Audio, volume control is on the right hand side and adjustable by hand, unlike the 2199US that is dificult to reach and works only under Windows. The built-in speakers are very good indeed and well located.
            - The CPU fan is somehow more silent specially when controlled by the Toshiba Power Saving Modes.
            - Haven't tested the rest of the peripherals like DVD/CDRW but they seem to be of standard quality.

            Cons:
            - Misleading specs, Toshiba claims to include an Intel Celeron M 2.8Ghz CPU when in fact this is a your average OEM desktop CPU, Integrated 32MB VRAM video card is another wrong specs about this system since the Intel 852GME is an IGP that uses/shared system memory and allocates 16MB when you have 256MB or 32MB when 512MB is installed, these settings can't be changed by the user.
            - Heavy an bulky, another specs blunder by Toshiba on the A45 line, it's as thick as the 2199US on the front(1.6") but the back is almost 2.5" thick, also the sides are around 1/2" - 3/4" bigger than the 2199US. This notebook won't fit on your averge bag.
            - The LCD is just too bright and controlled by the Toshiba Power Saving application, don't remove it from your startup config else you will have to adjust the brightness everytime you boot. To get a good contrast and viewing angle the screen has to be at least 125 degrees from the base of the unit, this is problem especially in small places like in a car or small desk or just sitting on your lap.
            - No S-Video out, if you want to watch a DVD/Divx on your TV or simply make a presentation then you may have to buy an extra peripheral to do the job.
            - Video support for OpenGL games only, I didn't see any settings for Direct3D only for OpenGL and the fact that Serious Sam played without a problem but Splinter Cell 2 fail to load may be a problem, also the lack of video memory could be an issue most games require at least 64MB of video RAM to work now days.
            - Noisy HD, the access "clicking" noise from the HD is very loud at times, I also was getting a pulsating pixel on a right hand corner when accessing the HD, which dissapeared after a while.

Well this is my opinion and my overall reaction to the few hours of usage, in the end is you(or myself) that have to choose between this Toshiba, the HP/CPQ or any other low budget notebook out there.

            5 out of 5 stars Incredible Notebook!.......2004-05-14

I received this notebook as a present from my mother and it is also my first notebook, and let me tell you---this is a great buy. Compared to other notebooks on the market, this one is truly cost-efficient and works PERFECTLY! Not recommended if you like to play complicated games on the computer. But otherwise, buy it, you won't regret it!

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

          3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

This Ron Howard film parlays the troubled story of Nobel laureate John Forbes Nash Jr., a gifted Princeton mathematics professor tormented for decades by paranoid schizophrenia, into something considerably richer than typical Hollywood triumph-against-all-odds fare. Howard has teamed here again with frequent collaborator James Horner, and it's the composer who deftly shades the film's difficult emotional landscape and helps impart a compelling humanity. Horner's first task is not inconsiderable: musically portraying the arcane realm of mathematical theorems that are the story's backdrop. In doing so, the composer leans heavily on modern minimalist technique, bright flourishes that recur briefly throughout an orchestral score that increasingly reflects Nash's bleak inner landscape in its quietly somber and brooding tones. And while Horner has frequently been accused of excessively repeating himself in his scores, the neo-minimalist gambit employed on this reflectively pastoral, postmodernist soundscape neatly nips such criticism in the bud. Nash's triumph is ultimately an intensely personal one, well reflected in Welsh soprano Charlotte Church's lilting performance of the Horner/Will Jennings ballad "All Love Can Be." This enhanced CD also features notes by the director and composer, as well as exclusive photos and the film's trailer. --Jerry McCulley

As other reviewers will tell you yes this is another Horner machine made soundtrack. But it still sounds good! If you are a Horner fan by all means buy it otherwise "at your own risk"!

And another thing that gets me is no one even bothered to mention "Alicia Discovers Nash's Dark World" I happened to like this one this is the song that plays when he is in the hospital.

          5 out of 5 stars a beautiful score.......2007-02-09

James Horner's soundtrack for A BEAUTIFUL MIND is as psychologically intense as the film it so effectively embellishes.

Charlotte Church provides an appropriately eerie and largely non-verbal soprano to this remarkable motion picture score, yet one that would seem only quirky were it not so beautifully embedded in a musical stream that draws one inexorably and almost vicariously into the emotional turbulence of the Princeton mathematician John Na Buslink USB 2.0 EXTERNAL COMBO CD-RW ( RWD-5216-U2 )

5 out of 5 stars A source of peace for peace-lovers.......2007-08-03

This CD is one of my favorites to listen to when I feel the need to be closer to the Spirit. Mack Wilberg is a master at transforming old hymns into glorious arrangements. I have had experience with high school students who love singing his arrangements even within the context of a world that seems in a state of constant conflict. THIS CD IS FABULOUS!

            5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-14

This CD is a must have for any Mormon Tabernacle Choir fans. The music is very reverent and gentle, and should also appeal to those not from the LDS church, seeing as how most of the music is common to the wider Christian community. This CD is a fantastic addition to any music collection.

3 out of 5 stars A few bright spots, but also some disappointments.......2007-01-19

It Is Well With My Soul is one of my favorite-favorites and that is the main reason why I bought the CD; it turned out to be a huge let down on this album, they rearranged it so much that I almost didn't recognize it. Be Still My Soul is another reason why I bought it and it's good, but not great. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is where it starts to get good. The last two songs "Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends"
and "Come, Let Us Anew" are very good reasons to buy this CD, they each have truely powerful passages and make the CD worth having. The Mormon Tabernacle Choirs 2006 release entitled Then Sings My Soul is by far the best that I've heard from them.

5 out of 5 stars This CD Deserves SIX Stars!.......2005-11-05

However, the rating scale has a limit of five. I own over 700 CDs of virtually every type of music. Peace Like A River belongs in a class by itself! I've never written a review before but, after listening to this STUNNING performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I feel compelled to share my praise with that of the five other reviewers. If I were limited to one word, I would use the word "SUPERB" to describe this beautiful and moving CD. SIX stars for Peace Like a River! BRAVO!!!

5 out of 5 stars every good adjective .......2005-08-06

This album is all beauty and solace. The singing is pristine, the arrangements lush and often stirring--never saccharine. As with the previous reviewer, my first listing of "Peace Like a River" brought me to tears (especially "Peace Like a River," the sopranos in "Swing Low," and the bagpipes in "Thou Gracious God"). Buy this one.
