Adiemus III: Dances of Time

Editorial Reviews

Adiemus is a studio creation of Karl Jenkins, the former Soft Machine keyboardist whose first album, Songs of Sanctuary, spawned the unlikely hit "Adiemus," heard on a Delta Airlines ad and compiled on the mega-selling Pure Moods collection. Plugging into Gregorian chant, ethereal Celtic music, the hybrid language of Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance), and the layered vocals of Enya, Jenkins hits all the exotica buttons. His Enya is Miriam Stockley, who can sound like a boys choir or an African tribe. The initial Adiemus album had an undeniable charm and exoticism, and, despite its advertising lineage, gorgeous melodies. While Adiemus II was mired in Jenkins's symphonic aspirations, Adiemus III regains some of the charm of the original. But Jenkins's writing is overly precious, drawing on superficial aspects of global dance rhythms that make Adiemus come off like Disney's "It's a Small World After All." --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Dances of Ti me.......2007-01-09

Once again Jenkins has produced a wonderful piece of music. His style is, for some, perhaps an aquired taste but once you have listened and enjoyed his music you become eager for more. The folk music genre used in this particular CD is quite magical. Lets hope there is more to come. I especially enjoy listening to his music whilst on the computor or driving in the car! Lyrical

5 out of 5 stars Dance like nobodys watching you..........2002-09-03

Music moves the soul, so why not the body as well. This album delivers both. Rain Dance is my favorite. It is easy to picture everyone dancing in a rainstorm on a summer afternoon. Stronge dances to subtle sways. Dance alone or dance with one or more persons, this CD has it all.

5 out of 5 stars Very innovative.......2001-09-20

This music is beautiful and unusual. It is unlike anything I have ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent CD!.......2001-01-16

This is a very well put together CD, consisting of different "Dances" that were popular throughout time. Each piece is wonderfully composed and performed, providing for an experience that you won't forget for a while. Another star from Karl Jenkins!

Each track is extremely well done, comprised of the vocals that are familiar to Adiemus, and a more orchestral work than what has come before. Don't miss this CD!

2 out of 5 stars Ends up being cliché..........2000-11-15

The first Adiemus album was a revalation to me and I enjoyed the second as well. With the third one, however, I feel that Karl Jenkins has played the Adiemus idea out and many of the musical motifs feel cliché. In short, I was disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Complicated, but it works...........1999-03-04

When first you hear this album, the music may seem a little strange and different from what you might expect, especially if you've only listened to the "Songs of Sanctuary" CD (Adiemus 1). But the more one listens, the more one starts to appreciate the complex nature of this recording. It is far more experimental, and also playful, and eventually a delightful experience. Take your time with this one, and do not be scared off!
