BT's This Binary Universe is really a follow-up to his 2004 soundtrack to Monster, a brilliant work of cinematic moods and ambient Americana. It was unjustly ignored by both the Oscars and the Grammys, where it should have at least been nominated for Best Surround Sound Recording. None of that has stopped Brian Transeau from going further down this path of expansive ambient electronica that takes him out of the techno-pop and trance direction he had been pursuing. This Binary Universe taps into BT's classical side, with expansive arrangements and intricate, albeit minimalist, thematic development. From the opening of "All That Makes Us Human Continues," BT reveals himself as a master of Eno-esque melancholy, as simple melodies evolve through an electro-orchestral instrumental palette. Lounge jazz with solos in the key of abstract, plaintive arpeggiated guitars, electro marches, minimalist hymns, and pastoral dreamscapes drive an album that seeks out joy and red Apricorn XTREME UPGRADE 60GB 7200RPM HDD ( X7200-UP-60 )

Electronics his editing. The other is the core of the song "1.618" (a BRAVE title for a song, I might add), which is this gorgeous hook at a walking pace that you could loop and listen to for 20 minutes.

Overall, wonderful sculpting and a dizzying array of effects make the replay value on this music through the roof. A bit more work on the last track and a little more life in the short jazz section would've made it near perfect.

I dont really like the housey stuff by BT (or anyone) but this album has a classical sensibility and an epic feel that i love about other ambient electronica. If you like ambient electronica- this CD is perfectly crafted - I'm not joking - its like... f'n... perfect.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-05-14

BT is a genious. This CD/DVD combo is a little different from a lot of his stuff I've heard in the past, but it is still excellent. The quality of the music on this CD MUST be listened to with good headphones to be truely appreciated! I am no audiophile, and I reguarly poke fun at their gigantic headphones, but in BT's case, this CD deserves the special treatment. You will miss a LOT of what he is including in his music if you listen with speakers. The DVD is also fantastic. The DTS surround makes it even better. It's great background video/music for a party. Do not download this from iTunes, buy the high quality CD/DVD and you won't be sorry!

    Album Description

As we explore the depths of our "self", our "souls", through massage, relaxation, and other healing modalities, we gain experience and knowingness. The music from Detaching The World Vol. 1 is a transient, which allows for this knowingness to occur in a peaceful, tranquil, and comforting environment.

This CD has been created to provide over 60 minutes in running time without the use of vocals or percussion. Emil Gagliardi has introduced a new style of guitar called "The Nuit's Effect" named after its rich soothing textures and deep earthy tones. From the opening cut of "Tranquil Sunrise", Gagliardi's swirling guitar immediately sets the perfect mood for massage and relaxation. The density of "The Valley Beyond" swallows you up in a tapestry of color similar to a warm blanket while the hauntingly beautiful "Fallen Angel" resembles a fresh new day after a storm.

Gagliardi's vision of creating the perfect massage and relaxation music sets Detaching The World (Vol. 1) apart from all others. Its purpose is to serve gentleness and ease like the inhalation and exhalation of the breath.

5 out of 5 stars ***PERFECT FOR MASSAGE - BEAUTIFULLY RELAXING***.......2007-08-01

I originally discovered the music of Detaching the World at the Canyon Ranch in Tucson. After having one of the most cleansing deep tissue massages ever, I fell in love with the music of Vol. 4 and started to incorporate it into my massage practice. Needless to say, the music has been a success with myself and my clients ever since.
I was recently given Detaching the World Vol. 1 as a present by one of my regulars who happens to also love this music. I couldn't believe what I had been missing!!! I just started using it on a few clients and already people are melting away with the beautiful touch of this music. Everything about this CD is perfect for massage:

    - The length (60+ mins, most of my clients are an hour long)
    - The flow (a slow yet even match with my hands)
    - The volume (the consistency remains throughout the disk)
    - The sound (beautiful layered textures of music, apparently guitar)
    - The quality (100%)
    - The happiness from my clients (they look refreshed and comment positively to the music)
    - My happiness as a therapist with this music (100%)

For me, this CD is a gold mine compared to my other relaxation CDs. Like Vol. 4, Vol. 1 is a keeper and will not leave you or your clients disappointed. Don't pass this one up!

Although guitarist Emil Gagliardi's debut CD was designed for massage, meditation, and relaxation, it is much more than that. The ambient release features soothing, New Age-style synthesizer sounds generated entirely by Emil's electric guitar. The result is not only a great therapeutic tool, but also a legitimate work of sonic art in the vein of Andy Summers' classic ambient guitar album, Mysterious Barricades. Emil Gagliardi is a guitarist to keep an eye out for. [...]

Electronics ing The World Vol. 1, I purchased Vol. 2 without hesitation. Although different from the first CD, the musicians style of meditative guitar transforms me and resonates with me similiar to Vol. 1. It seems as if the music puts me in a trance sending me to another place - a place where everything is calm and nothing can go wrong. My thoughts disappear and I capture the importance of being in every moment. This CD is mellow enough for deep relaxation yet also great music to play in the car on a long roadtrip. Either way it is definitely a journey that everyone should experience. I also find it important to listen from beginning to end without stopping - each track almost leads you to the next. It's as if a story is formed in track 1 that sends you wanting to know more in track 2. This continues until the "grand finale" which is a "heartbeat"-like song - sending you immediataly inward on your own journey. This is a beautiful CD.

Just exquisite! I love Singh Kaur from her Crimson Series releases and absolutely adored her previous collaboration with Gary Stadler on "Fairy NightSongs". But this new release fills me with such joy and wonder and opens my heart in a way that I have never experienced from music before. Singh Kaur's voice is radiant and pierces my soul with it's devotional passion and tenderness. I feel blessed to have found this magnificent piece of music. Thank you, thank you, thank you Gary Stadler for bringing Singh Kaur's final musical gift to us all. Many Blessings.

5 out of 5 stars All Pain And Sorrow Depart.......2005-09-14

As I've mentioned elsewhere I have a deep, visceral reaction when I hear Singh Kaur's voice. Suddenly I stop for a moment, as the wise say, my mind opens, and I remember that the problem isn't me, the problem is my reaction to the problem. This dates back to my first discovery of her series of chants done on the independent ?Invincible label with Kim Robertson on harp. This Crimson collection, her final recording, is the closest thing to healing music that I have ever heard. Unfortunately, the set has to be sought out or ordered, and many people simply have never heard what is one of the most powerful voices in new age music.

I don't know if I can put my finger on what exactly is it about her singing that does this. The Spark in the Night, the first cut on this album is a reworking of an old melody of hers. The simplicity of her voice, the purity of her tone fits right into the music. As her singing matured, her voice gained coloration, and this song works not simply as and easy melody, but it reaches the listener emotionally as well.

Most of the album (43 minutes) is spent on the title piece, this universe. Combining wit Gary Stadler, Lisa Lynne, and several others, it is meditation music perfection. While anything of this length is going to be repetitious, Singh Kaur manages to vary dynamics, rhythm and color so that even the repetition is soothing. This is no small accomplishment in a world where many people think that meditation music should be electronic choirs droning over electronic strings. Singh Kaur is never hackneyed.

Rather than drone on about Kaur's talents, I suggest that, if you are looking for the narrow path to inner quiet, you stop a moment and listen for yourself.

      Album Description

It's a new beginning with this third installment in the Detaching the World series. Musician Emil Gagliardi has written these compositions to reflect a unique inner journey, a style often described as meditative guitar. This music creates a peaceful, soothing environment for massage, relaxation, meditation, and yoga.

Detaching the World Vol. 3 provides over 60 minutes of continuous comforting ambient guitar work. As with all cds releases by this artist, there are no: fast tempos, fluctuating volume changes, synthesizers or percussion.

At the start of this journey, we come across the first composition; a 25 minute piece entitled A New Beginning. You hear an immediate gentle wave of music as the tone is set in favor of listeners requesting a blissful atmosphere for massage and relaxation. Throughout A New Beginning, the ambient landscapes of guitar change as if the artist is! taking us on a special calming voyage away from the mind and toward the heart.

Motions is a perfect example of meditative guitar as Detaching the World takes you deeper into a meditative state. The listener can hear a warm background melody weave in between each tranquil note giving the textures of the song a levitation type feel.

As we embark on the leisurely gentle Comforts of Home, this piece portrays a special improvised feeling of calmness as if the artist just took us in from a cold day, sat us down by the fire with a warm blanket, and handed us a cup of tea.

The latter leads us into Spring, a uniquely creative composition symbolizing a change within the musical climate of this work of art. The magic of Spring is meant to remind listeners of the special atmosphere needed to receive massage. Each tender note is meant to melt away anxiety and stress.

In this ever changing world of music, Detaching the World brings massage therapists, yoga instructors and seekers of total relaxation world wide to a new dimension. This music bestows upon the listener gentleness and ease like the inhalation and exhalation of the breath.

1 out of 5 stars it fell apart.......2007-05-26

the two halves are glued together an they just fell apart in my hand after only 1 week. SanDisk would not take it back because the serial number rubbed off. this is a very bad design. DO NOT BUY.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing...but it looked good.......2007-03-10

Neat idea - usb plug retracts into the case. Unfortunately, the case popped open after a month, and the drive stopped working after a year.

2 out of 5 stars Purchased four, have broken three........2007-03-07

The whole idea of this design is ingenious. The sad part is the drive is not as tough as SanDisk markets it. If you buy one of these...be sure to have your data backed-up. I've broken three. The funny thing is I have four all plastic drives that just keep holding up. SanDisk refused to replace the last one saying I broke it. Understandable. It would have appeared that I could have broken it. It looks as if I had snapped it of in the computer. However, If that had been the case, the 4 copper conductor would have been bent at that point. Fact of the matter is the drive just came apart, just as the other have. I won't buy another SanDisk product for the simple reason that their Tech Support has you jumping through hoops way before they decide whether or not they are going to replace their defective drive. I can get less aggravated for less money just about anyplace. It's a cool drive. If you decide to buy, just back up your data. It will break.

1 out of 5 stars The Unbreakable Blackhole of Data.......2007-03-06

I used to have a great flashdrive made by PNY. I say great because it survived being washed and dried twice, without any data loss, it was light weight and it performed it's main function: to hold data for transport.

Then it fell out of my pocket and into the mechanism of our recliner- unbeknownst to me. Later, my wife was trying to put the foot rest down on the recliner, but it just kept sticking. Not one to give up, she just kept slamming her feet, down and down. Finally I flipped the chair over to see what was the matter. There was my PNY, wedged bwteen a couple of metal arms, mangled as though chewed by some kind of animal.

      But it still worked.

Yep, after bending the end back into shape with pliers and screwdriver I actually saved my data!

Still it taught me a lesson. So for Christmas I wished for an unbreakable flash drive.

My wife got me the Cruzer Titanium 512.

What Perfection! I thought. Able to resist 2600 lbs of pressure, encased in titanium- the same wonder medal used by the Soviet Navy to construct their dreaded Alpha Attack Subs!

It worked fine for almost three months.

Then, space and time folded in on itself and the Cruzer ate my data.

At least, I assume it ate my data. It's not like I went swimming with it. Or dropped it in lava. Or used it as a hockey puck. Or let the baby slobber on it. Nope, my cruzer lived a life of linty softness, residing in my pocket, or on my dresser for the bulk of it's life. Until needed for data duty, then it was carefully slipped into a USB port at home or work.

Were I the Human Torch, or even the Hulk, such a pockety-life might explain some kind of wear and tear on the scant chips making up the Cruzer. But I'm not.

So, without much ado, my Cruzer just stopped working. Sure, I get a pretty blue flash from the light when I plug it in, then my computer(s) declare it an Unknown USB device and I am sat staring at my Unbreakable Flash Drive, chills running up my spine as I try to recall all the data I had there, and nowhere else.

      Bottom line: It Sucks.

If this thing actually stored data, it'd probably be great. It feels indestructible. But that's really a moot point now, as it will store less data then I can write on a rock with a ball point pen.

Save your money, that's my advice.

      2 out of 5 stars Cool-Looking Piece of Crap.......2007-02-21

Yes, the drive looks cool, and the titanium casing is virtually indestructible, but the actual durability of the flash drive itself is laughable. If you are considering this drive, please look at the reviews. While many praise it, there are quite a few people who have indicated that the drive has failed them. I have had mine for less than 6 months, and I have babied it. I typically carry it in my shirt pocket for goodness sakes! Despite my careful treatment, the drive has stopped working. I personally suggest that the would-be buyer look into Lexar. I have had a 128mb lexar drive for several years, and it is now what I am using.

For my money, of all the modern bands it's The Supertones who best represent the spirit of The Ventures. They have that knack of treating cover versions in just the right way, retaining the essential ingredients and adding their own touches to develop an original performance. Just over half of these tracks are covers and they are distributed in twos and threes throughout the album. Lonely Bull is great, as ever. Stranger in Paradise sparkles with energy, A Taste Of Honey is taken fairly straight but Perfidia, in The Ventures version here, has a kind of stripped down feel whilst being delivered with all four instruments sounding rich and upfront in the mix. Morgan is another from The Ventures' early songbook and again it's great to hear it taken so seriously, the added piano bringing a welcome diversion. Scrambler is the first of two Sandals covers, Endless Summer is the other, and they are both exquisite in their own way. Whilst Scrambler races off moodily into the distance, Endless Summer is the ultimate in evocative teen beach romance. Parked between them are two Lee Hazelwood numbers written for The Astronauts' Surfin' album. The Supertones take Movin's pace down a notch which allows them to add a good deal more feel, a major success guys! It's all guitars blazing for Baja, variety coming with the addition of a few keyboard fills. So how do the originals match up? Very well actually. Surf Fever 2000 itself has the feel of a speeded up Besame Mucho, an impression no doubt enhanced by the tasty 6-string bass lead. There's a hint of Kon-Tiki about the melody of Playa Del Rey, its rich summer sound contrasted by the slightly distorted bite of Moonshot Part 1. A bright ringing lead decorates the mid-tempo Side Slippin' until a reverbed guitar cascade introduces the surfer Sweet Ride with its Gary Usher styled piano-tapping support. Media Noche is an upbeat surf ballad and another winner. Moonshot Part 2 is altogether much better, this time the theme taken by a richly echoed guitar accompanied by organ. Surf Fever 2000 is another winner from The Supertones -- Alan Taylor, Pipeline #44, Surrey, UK

5 out of 5 stars The Second Coming of The Ventures!.......2001-12-20

Now this is what Surf music is all about! The Supertones get the coolest tone from those guitars and lots of cool reverb. I wish I could see these guys perform as I'm sure they must be one hot band live. My favorites: Side Slippin (just close your eyes and dream about lying on the beach after a nice morning ride), The Sweet Ride (classic Dick Dale-type surf guitar - hey where's Gidget?), Moonshot Part 2 (a modern classic in the vein of Telstar - it's a shame that radio sucks so much they won't play cool stuff like this!), Media Noche (muy bueno amigo, si!) and the partyingest tune of all - "Surf Fever 2000" (makes me want to have a beach party with all my friends). Product Description

The breakthrough Acer TravelMate 290 series is the notebook you've been waiting for if you're on a budget but want the latest and greatest technology. The 290 features Intel Centrino mobile technology. That means you get the wireless connectivity and extended battery life you need to work just about anywhere as well as an Intel Pentium M processor to speed you through power-hungry applications.

      Amazon.com Product Description

Featuring a slim, lightweight profile and the many other advantages of Intel's revolutionary Centrino technology, the Acer TravelMate 290 (291LMi-G) Notebook PC should warrant serious consideration by anyone who spends a lot of time on the road or in remote locations.

Centrino is not merely a clever marketing ploy. Rather, it is a trio of interrelated components (a super-efficient Intel Pentium M processor, an Intel 855 chipset and an Intel PRO/Wireless network connection 802.11b) that work hand-in-hand to increase battery life, reduce weight and improve performance beyond that of other similarly rated notebooks. In the case of the TravelMate 290 (291LMi-G), that processor is a midlevel Intel Pentium M CPU running at 1.4 GHz.

Acer has added a generous 512 MB main memory, which, along with the processor's impressive 1 MB Level 2 cache, assures you of satisfactory speed even during heavy-duty multitasking sessions. General performance is not on par with that of a high-end Pentium 4-based machine, but certainly good enough for virtually any standard mobile task. The system's graphics controller, an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory, will efficiently display older and less complex 3-D games and 3-D design programs, but doesn't have quite enough muscle for the current breed of high-end 3-D games.

Measuring 13.1 by 10.9 by 1.3 by 1.6 inches and weighing just 6.2 pounds, the TravelMate 290 (291LMi-G) is more compact and therefore more easily transported than most notebooks. At 40 GB, the system's hard disk is satisfactory for storing a flock of applications and files but not spacious enough for those who also want to maintain a large multimedia library. The enclosed DVD Dual drive will allow you to burn audio files to CD, archive data, watch DVD movies and write DVDs in both of today's most popular formats, DVD- and DVD+. Like all but one model in the TravelMate 290 series, the unit sports a large 15-inch XGA TFT viewing screen capable of 1024 by 768 resolutions.

Connectivity options are quite reasonable. To help you communicate with the outside world, the TravelMate 290 (291LMi-G) features a standard 56K dial-up modem, a high-speed 10/100 LAN connection for fast network interaction, and, of course, an Intel PRO/Wireless network connection 802.11b for those times when you just can't plug in. Other key amenities include three fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, an 84-key keyboard with programmable touchpad, an IEEE 1394 "FireWire" port (commonly used for fast data downloads from digital camcorders, and FIR (fast infrared) technology for cordless communication with FIR-equipped gadgets such as PDAs.

Under ideal conditions, battery life expectancy is a stunning 5.5 hours.

4 out of 5 stars Value and performance for the buck!.......2004-05-08

Acer has come a long way with its 290 series. This particular model seems to be a genuine winner with its unbelieveable price.
Out of the box the Acer looks sleek with no real curves. It has sleek styling with a titanium alloy lid with sturdy gray contrasting plastic base. It looks like a block, very stylish and comtemporary, somthing like Bang and Olufsen would put out.
Startup time is really unbelieveable at a staggering 29 seconds (XP Pro). Applications run smooth and trouble free. The 64 MB shared video RAM is utilized well with no real performance hindrance. When I used dual display at 1024 pixels the output was slightly choppy on DVD video, but on any single screen it is smooth and flowing.
The real advantage with this model is that it incorporates wireless / wired ethernet, firewire port, 3 USB ports and still allows room for expansion via the PCMCIA slot. Not only that but it also comes with a DVD and CD burner with rewritable capabilities. Battery life on normal use with speakers playing mp3's is a long long 4 hours minimum.
My only two real complaints with this laptop was the display options are limited (XGA Maximum - 1024 by 768). Would be perfect to get this with the SXGA screen but I guess thats a slight let down. The other small problem was that there is no physical buttons for adjusting the volume, but rather has to be done using the function key on the keyboard. Hence half a point for each had to be removed from the 5 total.
Overall, the Centrino provides for a great mobile computing experience with its exceptional battery life. Graphics are good, by no means the best, and everything works smoothly out of the box. Also this was a great buy since it comes with the Acer one year warranty that is applicable internationally. 4 stars, well done Acer, well done.
