5 out of 5 stars Meditation music.......2007-03-12

Excellent music as background during prayer services, personal prayer or meditation, etc. Soothing, gentle melody remains consistent without any distracting highs or lows.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning!.......2005-08-03

A beautiful and healthy kind of music to listen to. It even calms down my son' asthma!

5 out of 5 stars More Great Hilary Stagg!.......2005-08-02

If you like harp and/or New Age music, titles by Hilary Stagg are for you. In addition to this album, I also own Dream Spiral and Sweet Return. Beautiful harp playing. Definitely satisfies the harp lover in you!

5 out of 5 stars Other Dimensional Acoustic Harp Music.......2004-06-23

Like raindrops falling on a lightly drizzling day ... the plucked notes of the acoustic harp create mysterious melodies and a smooth soothing peaceful milieu. Occasionally, the rhythm and speed intensifies, adding pleasant emotional waves of listening pleasure as the notes wash over the listener, like the waves spashing onto the shore, sometimes softly, other times with more force. Keyboard synthesizers add colorful musical interludes and enhancements. There are exhilarating flights of fantastic music that rise and fall in rhythmic exhaltation of life. The dance of particle, energy, and sound are in vibrational harmony ... all is well in the universe. Like infinite fractals, the music is a never ending pattern of beauty and grace, resonating with the heart of the listener. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

5 out of 5 stars This CD has touched my soul!.......2003-05-28

The Edge of Forever is an excellent album. Hilary Stagg plays very soft and soothing harp music combined with keyboards, flutes and some vocals. I loved his music from the moment I heard it and it is highly recommended to anybody who likes soft music. But, if you like music with more of a beat to it there is also another harpist named Andreas Vollenweider and he plays music combined with drums a lot of other instruments.

There is not much I can say about the songs on the album because most songs have the same notes other than saying that every song is worth a listen to.

That's all I have to say and I hope my review was helpful to you!!

The ultimate diehard rock band returns with a collection that at times recalls Skynyrd in their prime, but won't prompt anyone to forget the fabled, ill-fated lineup of yore. By now, three members remain from the classic '70s Skynyrd (guitarist Gary Rossington, keyboardist Billy Powell, and bassist Leon Wilkeson); vocalists Johnny Van Zant and Dale Krantz-Rossington certainly qualify as stalwarts, having been with the bunch since their 1987 reformation. Blackfoot alumni Ricky Medlocke and former Outlaw Hughie Thomasson round out the three-guitars-strong frontline, and hired-gun drummer Kenny Arnoff lays a rock-solid foundation, so LS '99 doesn't lack for instrumental muscle. The problem lies in the material. Fallen frontman Ronnie Van Zant wasn't exactly an artful lyricist, but his blunt statements had a way of landing like a solid uppercut. The descendants to Skynyrd warhorses such as "Saturday Night Special" and "Gimme Three Steps" found here, however, aren't going to knock anyone for a loop. You like guitars that travel in packs, Skynyrd's still a good bet. You like enduring rock songs, return to the source. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Worthwhile.......2006-12-19

A little late but got this one a couple years back. First off this is great drinking music. This in my opinion is there best non Ronnie albums. Johnnie does his brother proud mean streets is one of there best songs to date. Fla another high energy song. Preacher man somewhat radio friengly. Gone Fishing another treat. Bottom line those songs stick out. Songs like rough around the edges partly about Ron, and tommorrows goodbye are ones that dont stick out but after a while they prove to be as good or better.

2 out of 5 stars Better than "Skynyrd 91" but still, nothin Stands out.......2005-05-29

First of all I'm a huge Skynyrd fan.But nothing stands out in this album, the only reason Johnny Van Zant was able to get in on the whole rock singer thing is because of his brother. And another thing Johnny isnt nearly as good as Ronnie. Buy Per-Nounced instead.

5 out of 5 stars The Best One After The Crash.......2005-03-12

This album is just great! It is without a doubt the absolute best album the band has put out since the crash. Just about every song on this album deserves a 5/5. "Gone Fishin'" and "Money Back Guarantee" are the only 2 songs that I would call filler. "FLA" is OK, but not as good as the rest (I give this one 3.5/5). Everything else is a masterpiece. The best songs I would say are "Workin'", "Edge Of Forever", "Mean Streets", & "GWTTG (Get it While the Gettin's Good)", just to name a few. If you're a huge die-hard Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, you'll love this album. If you hate Lynyrd Skynyrd and can't stand them..........................
You'll love this album!
I just wish they would play more of the songs from this album in concert.
And to the reviewer above me: It's fine if you don't like Johnny Van Zant, but you and so many others need to stop coming down on him just because he's not Ronnie!

5 out of 5 stars Great Lynyrd Skynyrd Album.......2003-05-24

Like its successor, VICIOUS CYCLE, EDGE OF FOREVER is a great Lynyrd Skynyrd album. The lyrics reflect a social conscience, with references to how we will all feel/look better if we respect other people and the environment while watching out for ourselves. This, along with TWENTY and VICIOUS CYCLE, is one of the first Johnny-era Skynyrd albums to buy.

3 out of 5 stars A solid effort from Lynyrd Skynyrd.......2003-03-10

As many of you know, Lynyrd Skynyrd lost their original singer Ronnie Van Zant (among others) in a plane crash., and the band was silent for many years. In 1991 they made a come back with Ronnie's brother Johnny Van Zant as the singer. Long time Skynyrd fans might say that things got changed and the music wasn't equally good as in the 1970's. Others, with a more positive attitude, claim that Lynyrd Skynyrd still got it, and the band just upgraded their traditional sound.

"Edge of forever" from 1999 is without doubt a "southern rock" album, as the opening "Working" with it's hard guitar riff clearly shows. Lynyrd Skynyrd have always stood by the side of the ordinary hard working man, and this one is no exception...

"I keep on workin' like a workin' man do
I got to buy my baby shoes
I keep on workin', it's the only thing I do
I make my living by the sweat of my brow"

Lynyrd Skynyrd have often showed us their romantic view towards the simple pleasures in life (fresh air to breath and mountains to look at, the opportunity to go fishing or drinking at the bar) and while some people think it's just a retarded hillbilly attitude - living by the bible and having a good woman by the side - I find some honesty in their lyrics.

The music on the album is mainly good, especially in the hard rockin "Working" and "Edge of forever"; the captivating "Preacher man" with it's attractive chorus; the groovy "Gone fishing" and the more light rocking "Money back guarantee". Although you can hear echo's from the "old" Lynyrd Skynyrd (for example in the verse on "Mean street", and parts on "Rough around the edges") it seems Lynyrd Skynyrd are having problems to re-create the magic from the bands heyday. But it's still a solid rock album, and those who like the southern approach shouldn't hesitate to buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars Worth picking up.......2005-06-25

I do like this album. They basically play all of V, and a few songs from Divine Wings and Twilight live.

I dont care for the mix on this though, hence not getting 5 stars. The drums are kinda up in the mix and guitars and too quiet. Thats just my taste though, others may prefer that.

I'm not going to go into attempts to sell potential new fans on Symphony X. Its your loss if you dont check them out.

5 out of 5 stars you don't like music if you don't own this double album.......2004-11-05

I don't know what these other people were talking about, when they were complaining about the faster tempo on some of the tracks, first of all just because you heard them do it on a studio album doesn't mean that is how they're supposed to play the song. If they want to up the tempo it's their perogative. the vocals sound a little strained on the second disc. i think he's got a little problem focusing the pitch with his voice on that disc. my only other problem with the cd is them hacking apart candlelight fantasia, but then again, that was their performance of it. i really would've liked a 7 disc box set version instead of just a double cd (in case they're reading this.) but finally it's a shame bands like symphony X don't get any media attention at all, and they're forced to play 45 minute opening sets because i don't think they got the fan base to support a headlining tour so... everybody who buys this album, play it for 5 people.. and we'll see if we can remedy that

4 out of 5 stars Good live album just shy of perfect........2004-06-24

I decided to get this after being impressed with V and Twilight in Olympus. Every one of the guys in Symphony X is very talented and can really play. The first CD is excellent from start to finish; songs like 'Evolution' and 'The Eyes of Medusa' are awesome along with Michael Romeos guitar solo in 'On the breath of Poseidon'. The guy is a really amazing guitarist and although many people think he sounds like yngwie, I think he is a lot more controlled and has a more melodic sense.
I also like the way S X get the crowd involved, unlike most other progressive bands. My theory on live performances is that a band is on stage to put a show on and not just to play their music. S X are really good entertainers as well as musicians and they also play their songs differently live to what's on the studio recordings, which is great because similar bands such as Dream Theater usually just stand there playing their songs live exactly the same way as they do on the record. Even though DT are an amazing band, they can be so boring to watch and listen to live sometimes, unlike S X.
The second CD however is where I found some minor problems. Some of the songs are played far faster than those on the record. Many people complain about progressive bands doing this live and I'm sorry to say in most cases; it is true! Listen to Dream Theater playing 'The Mirror' live for example; it is far faster than that on the record. The other thing that bugs me on CD2 is that the keyboards are too low on the mix. S X has always been a symphonic band and without the keyboards being in the shot they just do not sound the same. Russels vocals do not sound as strong on CD2, this is because I think those particular songs were recorded 6 months after CD1 so his voice is probably a bit worn from constant touring.
However I can't complain too much because `The divine wings of tragedy' at the end of CD2 is amazing, I think the live performance of that song is absolutely stunning. Overall I really enjoyed this album and I love their music. I highly recommend it to any Power or Prog metal fans, Keep up the good work guys!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The heart of power progressive...............2003-09-26

Me refiero a V: The new mythology suite.

Two months ago, SYMPHONT X played live with Stratovarius at Polìgono Anoeta in San Sebastian, Spain. The live perfoming of SYMPHONY X proves that we are in the presence of one of one of the best megagroups today. They can play pure classical music or easily change to a powerful power metal. To consider SYMPHONY X as a megagroup oriented to power metal is being inocent. Just listen to this double CD: CD 1 include one of their best studio works, V: the new mythology suite. Nevertheless, the best of this live album is CD 2. Church of the Machine and Through the Looking Glass (from the album Twlight at the Olympus are simply amazing. Romeo at the lead guitar, Pinnella playing the magestic keyboards, Rullo at the drums, the suberb Lepond at bass guitar and the incredible voice of Allen configures this megagroup..If you add the live vertion of Oddesey you can imagine what we are talking about...

5 out of 5 stars No Absinthe And Rue?! 5 STAR ESSENTIAL RATING! *****.......2003-03-12

Absinthe And Rue is one of my favorite songs from this band, and I couldn't believe they left it off of here, but If I had to name every song I wanted on this live release, it would be their entire catalog! I knew from the beginning that this was going to get 5 stars from me, the first disc, playing out almost the entire Mythology Suite album, with the exception of something like four tracks, and then blazing through some amazing playing on disc two. These guys know how to play live. Not too much talking with the audience, just kicking a** and taking names. I had only two complaints among this masterpiece, for any fan of Symphony X or progressive/power metal: one, I couldn't believe that there were no 'real' solos as far as Michael Romeo and Jason Rullo? A guitar and drum solo would have made this 2 disc set even more unbelievable sounding; my second gripe: I couldn't belive there were no songs of The Damnation Game or their 1st self-titled CD??? The 1st one had so many great songs on it and Damnation Game wasn't anything to laugh at either? I would have gone for a full three disc blowout, more songs off those two and the guitar and drum solos. So what if it seemed like the Dream Theater, Scenes set? Compared to the last Dream Theater release, I think Symphony X's Odyssey, blew away any and all progressive metal bands for a long time. With all my complaining done, you get a solid 2 disc live set of songs that will amaze, shock, and stun you into listening to these guys even more! Don't miss this one!! ***** 5 STAR ESSENTIAL X-RATING FROM SCRAGGY'S TOMB OF POWER METAL, USA. Cheers!

Album Description

For more than a decade, EARTH CRISIS have been one of the most influential and revolutionary bands in the metal, hardcore and punk scenes. While often imitated but never duplicated, "91-01" serves as a document to these legends in their own time. Since their inception, EARTH CRISIS have had a single and uncompromised mission: the fight for total equality of all living creatures. This fight has fueled a worldwide revolution that still burns strong today. While spreading their message during numerous tours of the US and abroad, they have gained the attention of such prestigious media outlets as 60 Minutes, 48 Hours, America's Most Wanted and have also made an appearance before the United States Congress. There are very few bands in the history of hardcore music that have seen both their message and music have such a quantifiable impact on their fans, music and society in general. You would be hard pressed not to find at least traces of EARTH CRISIS' controversial beliefs, sound and energy in the majority of all hard music being released today as they are consistently cited as a main influence by all bands of their ilk. Documenting EARTH CRISIS' entire VICTORY RECORDS history, "91-01" covers everything from the early 90's ground breaking "All Out War" and "Firestorm" through the 2001 sensation "Last Of The Sane" and everything in between. This is the seminal EARTH CRISIS collection, a release that no fan of hard music should live without.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Hardcore?.......2007-06-30

After hearing good things about these guys and checking out a few live clips on youtube I decided to purchase this album. I have a few issues with this release.

1. The first half of the album is pretty much nu-metal. I understand that they went that direction toward the end, but half the tunes on here have a lame sort of Linkin Park feel. If I want to hear psuedo-metal I'll turn on MTV.

2. Where are the lyrics? One would think that a band with a message might include a lyrics sheet with their 'greatest hits' album. I grew up on a steady diet of straight edge hardcore and I was really curious to see how the message evolved.

3. Things get better as the album progresses. I wish they put the songs in chronological order instead of the reverse.

If you are looking for a good harcore album I would skip this one. Buy one of their older releases instead. The good songs at the end of this release do not make up for the crappy ones that lead off.

5 out of 5 stars Blistering, Crushing, Terrifying Vegan Hardcore!.......2004-11-07

I decided to buy this album one day, and when I put it in my CD player, it blew me away! This is blister hardcore like you've never heard before! The songs from "Slither" are cool, but I like the songs from the 90's a lot better. The songs from "Gomorrah's Season Ends" blow me away, with the crushing guitars and such, and the songs from "Destroy The Machines" remind me of the crushing brutality that such artists like Hatebreed and Martyr A.D. deliver today. The songs from the "Firestorm" and "All Out War" kick as much ass as the songs off the full length, which gives me an idea about how hardcore sounded in the early 90's. If you are a metalcore fan, buy Earth Crisis' "Forever True". You will never regret buying this. Screw poser punk, buy hardcore.

5 out of 5 stars Mourn this loss.......2002-02-28

There will never be another band like Earth Crisis. This release, a collection of selected tracks from each album they released on Victory Records, was the culmination of a decade of tireless work, touring, and songwriting on the part of this revolutionary band. Forever True is actually a very good introductory route for this band; if you're looking to get into Earth Crisis, this is a good first disc to pick up. It starts out with some material from Slither, skips Breed the Killers (that album is owned by Roadrunner Records), goes through Gomorrah's Season Ends and so on back through their career. The shining moments are the tracks from Destroy the Machines and the two original EP's, as these songs heralded the arrival of a new era in hardcore, an era that is already winding down. The live tracks at the end are a special bonus; a fiercer version of "Sunshine of Your Love" - complete with guitar solo! - cannot be found anywhere else. Earth Crisis will be missed.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of EC tracks.......2001-12-01

I was disheartened to hear of the breakup of Earth Crisis, as they have been one of those bands I always loved to blast on a pretty regular basis. Seeing this album in stores was sort of a sentimental moment for me, knowing this was the final EC disc released. I felt this was a great tribute to the career they worked so hard at, as every track here is amazing, displaying their ferocity while keeping a positive stance. It is intriguing placing the material in order of newest to oldest, hearing their progression as a band in reverse(This really helped me to appreciate the material for Slither a little more). Everything you can imagine from Earth Crisis appears here: the more textured songs from Slither, such as Behind The Wire, packing an awesome bass line; the heavy era of Destroy The Machines; the classic feeling of Gomorrah's Season Ends, and the excitement you first felt upon hearing Firestorm and All Out War. This is an amazing tribute to an amazing band-they will be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Close your eyes on the edge of forever..........2001-11-26

Symphony X is one of the few progressive metal bands whose music I enjoy. Thus, my respect for them has been boosted considerably with the release of this 2CD live album. For one thing, V - The New Mythology Suite is one of my favorite albums, and the band performs a good portion of it on disc 1 (all the way up to "The Death of Balance," at which point it segues into "Candlelight Fantasia"). V is my favorite SymX album, but in the studio the album seemed a bit more "tame" than their earlier stuff. Live, Symphony X's trademark aggression is thrust back into V. (Fanfare!)

For a relatively inexperienced live band, they put on a great show, performing their highly sophisticated music with explosive energy. I am particularly in awe of vocalist Russell Allen, who is an astonishingly good live performer. Although he is not an extremely technical singer (by his own admission), his voice fares very well, he's a spirited & lively performer, and he often improves the delivery over the original studio recordings. On "Candlelight Fantasia," he hits every note of the beautiful song with perfect, controlled pain. On others, he injects a great deal more aggression into the lyrics. On "Fallen," he sings, "My Serpents plot the overthrow of your temples and shrines" with a growl so evil it makes the hairs on the back of my neck rise. On "The Divine Wings of Tragedy - The Prophets Cry" he sounds utterly demonic. Nothing is worse than a great singer who can't perform live...Symphony X doesn't disappoint in that regard!

If you're wondering how the band recreates their majestic vocal harmonies in the live setting...well, they don't. Still, they do what they can. When possible, Michael Romeo and Michael Pinnella sing backing vocals (which work well). On "Of Sins and Shadows," Pinnella runs the choral sample from his keyboards. The massive, complex a capella counterpoint choral work that opens "The Divine Wings of Tragedy" is cut entirely. While it's difficult to recreate some of their richly textured symphonic music live, the band fares very well in other regards. Even though keyboardist Pinnella can't support a full MIDI orchestra live, the symphonic cuts ("Prelude," "Transcendence," "On the Breath of Poseidon") still possess a big sounding quality. Michael Romeo helps out by filling some of the missing textures with awesome guitar licks. For example, on the symphonic speed metal cut "On the Breath of Poseidon" he plays neoclassical runs to round out the symphonic weaves throughout the song. It's different, and very cool. Romeo = guitar master!

Many songs are altered to keep things fresh, as well. "Candlelight Fantasia," which is shortened, is performed with nothing but Allen's ghostly voice and pianos. Believe it or not, the song is even more ethereal and beautiful when done live. Pinnella adds a number of lovely little piano tags throughout (like at the end of "Egypt" (yes, I know there was piano there before, but this is different) and the end of "Communion and the Oracle." Even when the songs aren't altered in any way, the sheer energy gripping the performances makes everything sound new and more exciting. The frenzied Romeo/Pinnella soloing duels sound more wild and exhilarating than before. Romeo's hair-pin metal riffing is burning with energy, which makes the sometimes mucky guitar tone less regrettable. It's also great to hear Allen's interaction with the crowd, like when he basically teases the audience before the beginning of "Smoke and Mirrors." Good fun! Speaking of the crowd, they sure get rockin' to the music (that makes it more exciting!). European audiences sure love their Symphony X.

Rarely is anyone 100% satisfied with a live album (especially if you're a jerk like me), so obviously I'm disappointed in a few respects. The album is called Live on the Edge of Forever, but where is the song "The Edge of Forever"? It's such a beautiful song, and I would have loved to hear it live with the band's thundering energy (since The Damnation Game's production was pretty bad). In fact, there are no songs from The Damnation Game, or the debut. That's too bad. I think it also would have been incredible to hear "The Relic" live, because it has an awesome, heroic chorus that would rock live.

But no big deal. These complaints are really just what they call "small potatoes." Live on the Edge of Forever is awesome anyway you take it. There's been a lot of great live releases this year, but this is one of the best. The performances catch fire, and Symphony X rocks n' stuff. If you don't buy this, I must question your sanity.
