The chant genre is glutted to epidemic proportions these days, with everyone from Buddhist nuns to Madonna's backup singers intoning Tibetan chants and Hindu kirtans. After six albums, Rasa continue to rise like perfumed smoke above the chanting hordes with their Eastern acoustronica and the enthralling singing of Kim Waters. The Rasa signatures are all there on Saffron Blue: Hans Christian creates a global fusion playing Swedish nyckleharpe, Indian sarangi, cello, electric bass, and synthesizers, orchestrating them across deep throbs of Indian percussion. But it all starts with Kim Waters, intoning Hindu mantras and bhajans in a voice that is both comforting and seductive. Christian builds her up in echoing choirs and canons that just seem to climb higher and higher. But there are some new wrinkles in the sari on Saffron Blue. They bring in a couple of other singers to duet with Waters, providing a contrast of rougher, more traditional sound with Vaiyasaki Das and Bairavesh Das. But even that nod toward tradition is bent through psychedelic echoes, subtle backwards effects, and deft electronic rhythms. Christian even gets a bit of funk slap bass in on the epic 10-minute trance of "Vande Krishna." Rasa don't make your street-corner Krishna sound, nor the easy grooves of ethno-techno chant albums. Pleasant New Sounds -- Same Great Style .......2006-05-21

Govi shows his great versatility on this CD by introducing some Old World string instruments that incorporate a nice twist within the framework of his distinctive familiar sound. I enjoy, to varying degrees, 7 cuts from Saffron & Silk with the hands down winner being Marrakesh. The intoxicating melodies in this song, superb musicianship, incredible detail, and scary good recording quality make this one of my 5 all time Govi favorite tracks. George M -- Phoenix, AZ

Nothing can be as great as this music. This CD will be loved by those who enjoy Armik, Mehdi, Strunz and Farrah or Even Jesse Cook. My hats off to you Govi . I'll always look forward to hearing your mystical fingers on your magical guitar.

Great music all around. But if you plan on uploading this CD to your portable music player, skip the CD buying and head over to an online music store instead. You will not be able to encode this CD into any format compatible with any portable devices, if you care just a tiny bit about sound quality.

The only way you can "rip" this CD to mp3, wma or aac is in analog mode, and that results in a lot of backgrouund hiss noise. Windows Media Player, iTunes, RealPlayer all have problems with the digital playback of this CD. The only thing that kind of works for playback is a stupid, illegible, featureless, orange icons on blue background player that is included on the data track. Too bad...

Govi keeps his track record perfect with Saffron and Silk. All the tracks are a pleasure to hear given anytime of the day. Some of the tracks are very romatic too.

govi does not disappoint.......2004-05-26

listening to this while cruising on the nile river from luxor to aswan; this was a great soundtrack watching the palm trees go by, past the little farms and villages, the lazy felucca drifting by, though not typically mid eastern or african, it was, nonetheless exotic. 4 out of 5 stars only for brevity. (although you don't really want to be baking under the upper egypt sun for very long!)

Manus McGuire, who grew up in Sligo, has earned a reputation as one of Ireland's most tasteful fiddlers through his work with the groups Buttons and Bows and Moving Cloud. On Saffron and Blue, his solo debut, he steps away from the familiar band setting to play a collection of dance tunes accompanied by only a piano. The uncluttered backup recalls the classic 1920s recordings of fellow Sligo fiddlers Michael Coleman and James Morrison. McGuire cut his teeth playing for dances where he learned that the mark of a great fiddler was not how fast you played, but how many people you got up out of their chairs and onto the dance floor. He takes many of these jigs and reels at a slower tempo than a fiddler who learned in the competitive session scene might, but McGuire's gentler pace reveals the subtle beauty of the melodies that is obscured when they are played too fast. --Michael Simmons

Fine Irish fiddle tunes.......2004-08-08

A nice set of Irish fiddle instrumentals by this County Clare native. Perhaps a bit on the smooth side, though then again that might be nice for a change of pace. Not earthshaking, but certainly worth checking out.
