Amazing and Soulful.......2007-07-03

I first heard this recording at a session at the 2007 conference of the Association for African American Historical Research and Preservation and I have been listening to it ever since. This CD really is a celebration of music.

I have put in this CD without telling people what it was and have enjoyed the totally positive response.

I bought this CD because of the great reviews and didn't like it at all. Too loud and abrasive for my ears... I gave it away to someone who might better like it.

I expected it to be mellifluous and soulful but found it rather annoying... especially at the holidays.

there is nothing more i could say about this cd that the other reviewers haven't already mentioned - it is a must have for anyone, even if you are not a fan of christian music. i had never even heard of this project - i bought it soon after it came out, simply because i liked the cover art and thought it would be a good cd to have around christmas. it's better than that - i listen to it year round. every song, no matter what style, is delivered with all heart and soul possible. excellent lift-you-up music, and great to listen to in the mornings to get you pumped up for the day. "and he shall purify" is simply electrifying. i am also a big fan of the final song, "halleluja!" and "but who may abide the day of his coming" will just set you free! year round, this is an outstanding example of gospel, jazz, hip-hop and absolute zeal for any music lover.

Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration is a masterful interpretation of an age old classic. The arrangements are sheer brilliance. My hats off to Mervyn Warren and all those involved in this project.

OUTSTANDING!.......2007-03-16

This album won a Grammy many years ago. I saw a Gospel Choir perform the Halleluah Chorus live at the award show. Since then I have not only enjoyed the recording tremendously myself I have given it to several people at Christmas time and they have been equally enthralled. I loaned it to my son's High School Choir teacher and finaaly made it a gift when he refused to give it back!

I originally heard this music while shopping in a pleasant children's stre in Spring Lake, New Jersey. I inquired from the proprietor as to who the artis(s) were and she told me she had some of Beegie Adairs CD's for sale. She got a stock of them after many similar inquiries. I have now purchased all of her CD's including this lovely Christmas album.

Soulful Christmas Album.......2006-12-17

Most Christmas albums are nothing more than cash cows for record companies. This isn't the case with McKnight's Bethlehem which has an quiet storm feel to it even though it's R&B. Let It Snow 98 is a great follow up to the 1993 Boyz II Men classic. Religious Christmas songs like "The First Noel," "Hail Mary," "Silent Night," and "Bethlehem Tonight" are mixed in with contemporary tracks such as "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "Home for the Holidays," "Christmas Time Is Here," and "Christmas Eve with You." Overall, Bethlehem is a diverse collection of traditional and modern-day Christmas songs with something for everyone celebrating the season.

Holiday Special!.......2004-04-15

I am a huge Brian McKnight fanatic! This has to be one of the best Christmas albums I've heard! Even though the songs aren't traditional, they leave you with a real connection with the true meaning of Christmas. You won't get the warm fuzzies you normally get with the traditional Christmas albums. Instead, you get the heart wrenching tug that reminds you of why we really celebrate the holiday. If you haven't already added this to your collection, please do! You won't be disappointed! I would have to say "It's all about Love" performed with McKnight Jr would have to be my favorite.

My Favorite Christmas Release.......2002-12-02

I bought this CD a couple of years ago and although I've bought several Chrismas mixes since, Bethlehem is still the one that stays in my player the most. I love Brian's smooth, suave voice and the arrangements of these songs are absolutely wonderful. There's not one song on here that I don't like. I think it's time for him to do another.

While I think Brian McKnight is a gifted singer - oroduction is weak. He seems to be ('till this point) one of those guys with alot of promise but no results. Perhaps he is circled by hangers-ons and family - he wouldn't be the first.

Remastered..BUT NOT Expanded ?? W.T.F.!!.......2006-10-26

When I saw the updated cover art for Luther's Christmas CD, I just knew they added the 3 missing songs, which are found elsewhere! Nope!! At any rate, if you wanna improve this classic holiday CD, EXPAND IT with Luther's 'May Christmas Bring You Happiness', 'At Christmas Time', and 'The Christmas Song' (chestnuts roasting)!!! These 3 songs are off the chain, and Luther didn't sing, he SANG them!! You can find these tracks on the 'R&B Christmas', 'Slow Jams Christmas, Vol.1' & 'A Very Special Christmas 3' (the green cover) CDs. It's a shame the record company failed to expand the CD, but after adding the songs yourself, you'll have an improved 13 track holiday classic!

Simply beautiful!!!!.......2005-12-26

This is a beautiful cd. The songs are mellow, romantic and pure Luther. The best songs are Every Year, Every Christmas.....there is so much passion in that song, you can almost feel his tears running down YOUR cheeks and another favorite is A Kiss for Christmas.........wonderful tempo and a delight to listen to. The standards, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and My Favorite Things are good too. Pick up this CD, you will not be disappointed. It's so good, I listen to it all year; along with my other cd's by Luther!!!!

Why remaster and re-release if you're not going to EXPAND it???.......2005-12-23

A GREAT Luther Christmas CD, don't get me wrong, but this review is SPECIFICALLY targeting this reissue, not the quality of the music.

upon reissuing this CD, they should have included bonus tracks, including the songs "At Christmas Time" and "May Christmas Bring You Happiness" (which had several mixes on the original out-of-print single), as well as the 10 minutes David Morales club mix of Mistletoe Jam, originally released as a bonus track on a CD single for "I Can Make it Better."

Having said that, fans should definitely pick up this CD, and try and hunt down those other tracks as well and make their own complete Luther Christmas!

Flo Ballard and the Supremes with Motown Rocks.......2003-12-02

I bought this CD and it is wonderful. Motown really knew what they were doing when they recorded these songs. Flo Ballard commands centre stage with her rendition of "Oh Holy Night." I highly recommend this CD. It would be a wonderful collection to add to the Christmas trimmings. Kim Weston, Temptations and many of the singers of the CD were great. Funk Brothers really know how to get down with their music. Overall Great CD.

let me just express my sheer joy of finding another rare song that the beloved late,great flo'ballard is singing lead up front.she sings just like an angel.i wish miss ross,as supreme as she is or whoever at motown had her sing more lead songs, silent night&oh holy night ,i feel should be mentioned in the highest esteem!!as well, the late, great marvin gaye,the temptin' temptations,ms.kim weston the funk brothers;winter wonderland ;on&on!!soul power!!...

Just Like Christmastime - not long enough!.......2001-11-30

This CD delivers what it boasts - fantastic Christmas recordings that are scattered about on other discs or impossible to find and compiled into one nice Motown Christmas gift. Varity is the theme of this CD; Motown from the early 60's to the 80's.

Although all of the recordings are 5-star quality, the fact that there are only 14 recordings (volume 1 contains 24), one can't help feeling a little cheated.

Highlights of this CD are:

Marvin Gaye - PURPLE SNOWFLAKES and THE CHRISTMAS SONG.
The Supremes - OH LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM and OH HOLY NIGHT. OH HOLY NIGHT features Florance Ballard as lead.
The Temptations - LITTLE DRUMMER BOY. Not new but always great to hear.
Kim Weston - WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Anytime a soulful diva like LaBelle chooses to record, it's a special event, and fortunately, all but three of the songs on this 1990 release are originals written specifically for the project. The Philly musical legend tackles Donny Hathaway's classic "This Christmas," the 1949 Orioles hit "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" and the traditional "O Holy Night," but the real gems here are tunes like the heartfelt standout, "Born in a Manger"; the wonderful "Country Christmas," cowritten by LaBelle and coproduced by her longtime musical director, "Budd" Ellison; and "'Twas Love," which finds the usually high-octane singer in a relatively subdued mood also echoed on "I'm Christmasing with You." LaBelle can clearly relate to the lyrics of "Nothing Could Be Better," which references her life on the road and the joy of coming home for the holidays, and she sounds equally comfortable on "If Everyday Could Be Like Christmas" and the album's closer, "Wouldn't It Be Beautiful," which has an almost reggae-like undertone to it. Toning down her usual vocal pyrotechnics, LaBelle offers a holiday album that is eminently listenable. --David Nathan

'This Christmas' Is As Magical As Patti Is Wonderful.......2002-12-20

I wanted to give this album 10 stars, but they wouldn't let me. The first time I listened to 'This Christmas,' I was away at college (feeling lonely that I could not be with my family for the holidays) and it completely brightened my spirit (I truly mean that). Patti LaBelle is one of a handful of musical artists (because she is so genuine and warm, both on and off stage) that can literally send surges of adrenaline throughout your body when you watch her perform. There is something so unusual and cataclysmic about her voice and the way she delivers a song. Patti doesn't just sing a song, like a competitive race car driver, she steers it, she controls it, she makes you feel trimumphant afterwards, like she is by your side every step of the way to the finish line. 'This Christmas' like all of Ms. LaBelle's albums is packed with musical selections that speak to the heart. The title cut, This Christmas, is by far the best rendition of the song that has ever been recorded, what with the magnificant orchestration and wonderful use of deep bass drums in the background (I love that!), This Christmas, very nicely demonstrates Ms. LaBelle's vocal power and unmatched lyrical phrasing (her unique way of delivering individual words or groups of words in any given song and is what sets her squarely apart from other vocalist and where she has no rivals.) Something else I love about this christmas album is it's wide-range of musical styles. From love songs like 'Twas Love,' to country-laden selections like 'Country Christmas, to the contemporary and my FAVORITE selection on the album 'If Everyday Could Be Like Christmas,' The album 'This Christmas' has something for every listener, black or white, young and old. -Everytime I listen to 'If Everyday Could Be Like Christmas' I just want to get up and start singing. I love the message of the song, the contagious beat and those raucous, over the top Patti vocals, and if you turn up the song loud enough, her vocals could clear out your sinuses, forget about the need for cold medicine! All in all, 'This Christmas' is a 10-star compilation of wonderful holiday songs performed in that familiar and fabulous style that is pure Patti LaBelle. Go out and buy a copy, invite a few friends over and have a very Merry Christmas!

The Best of the Season.......2001-12-12

This is my favorite holiday CD! It holds a very special place in my heart. It has been a family tradition to play this particular CD as my husband and I decorated our Christmas tree. Unfortunately my husband passed away a year ago. Playing the CD reminds me of the wonderful Christmases we spent together. The song Angel Man feels like it was written especially for me.
I recommend this CD highly for those who love the beautiful music of Patti LaBelle. It doesn't get any better than this.

Patti's Best Christmas CD, All the songs are winners!!!!!!.......1998-11-24

I bought this CD two years ago, someone liked it as much as I, because last year it disappeared. I searched for it at stores and could not find it. I have told many Patti fans about it hoping someone had it but to no avail. Amazon you are the Greatest! Twas Christmas is excellant, Jesus is the Reason for the season is a favorite but the topper is What Are you doing New Year's! I was married last New Year's Eve and it was our Wedding song. The whole CD is Excellent. I play it year round. Wouldn't it be Beautiful if every day could be like Christmas!

Patti puts all of her heart and soul into this Christmas collection of songs. This remastered version was produced very well. No Christmas should go without Patti's cd playing non-stop.

I stumbled across this album over 10 years ago (it's a re-issue of an album originally titled "This Christmas" from 1990) and it has become my FAVORITE holiday album ever since.

Jim Gibson has a unique ability to weave together wonderful improvisations on familiar hymns while leaving intact the melody that you love to hum along with.

This is music that can be enjoyed on many levels: it's my favorite background music for preparing and enjoying holiday meals because he plays with a smooth and pleasant manner, but I can also enjoy sitting just to listen to the CD because his variations on the hymns are sophisticated and imaginative.

This is not a Jim Brickman-esque CD, nor is it the more abstract style of George Winston. No fake-sounding strings, no awkward vocals. Maybe this is the kind of piano music Sam from Casablanca would have played for his family on Christmas Eve.

Our family has all of Jim Gibson's recordings, and we especially love this one. These are what we call the "real" Christmas Carols--the ones we grew up with. His playing is warm and, I guess you'd say soothing, and it seems to be a perfect match for the songs.

This CD seems to me to be the exact opposite of all the commercial music with drums and guitars and synthesizers and new Christmas songs that sound like generic pop music. This is real Chrismas music played by a wonderful pianist. If you like the Christmas songs we grew up with, and you like quiet, reflective music, buy this CD.
