Medicine Woman

About the Artist
From his home and studio in rural Cornwall, Medwyn Goodall has devoted himself to reflecting the beauty and inspiration of nature through his music. He plays over a dozen instruments, although his main instrument is the guitar, with which he has evolved a unique style melodic, expressive and graceful a music that is both inspiring and calming. Born in the Yorkshire Dales in the village of Harrowgate he spent his childhood in the scenic splendor of the countryside; the Goodall family veterinarian was the best-selling author James Herriot. Raised with the sounds of the 60's, Med was particularly fond of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, claiming their melodies influenced him to get his first guitar; at the age of 11 Medwyn met English pop star Cliff Richard, who encouraged him in his choice of a musical career. He began composing music as soon as he had mastered a few chords on his guitar, playing in many different bands as a teenager. One of these groups, Trax, appeared on the television show Check It Out and made numerous radio appearences, including a guest spot on BBC Radio Leeds. Goodall turned out to be a natural musician, able to pick up any instrument and play it. His range is amazing, including double bass, mandolin, piano, drums, harp, percussion, flute, glockenspiel, panpipes, vibraphone, and synthesizers of all types. He has designed and built his own recording studio, stocking it with many varities of sampler (which Medwyn claims as his favorite instrument, as it will perform any musical sound in the world), synthesizers, guitars and a wealth of acoustic instruments.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Uplifting.......2007-06-10

After listening to this music, you feel as if your "batteries" have been recharged. The pleasant uplifting music is energizing, restoring, and rejuvenating. It's the perfect pick-me-up after a hard days work. I would recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Special.......2003-10-24

I consider "Medicine Woman" a very special work.

Goodall is considerd to be an outstanding flute player, which he is, but I find his guitar technique outstanding. I feel the guitar work that he does on "Talisman" is as good as anything that I have ever heard, it sounds so simple but is very complex.
The only regret that I have is that he does not include more guitar work in his offerings.

There is a very even quality about his music which is probably due to the fact that he plays all of the instruments in his recordings (he plays nine instruments).

We have several of his CDs and I personnally consider "Medicine Woman" the best of a very good lot.

I find "Medicine Woman" one of those rare CDs were there is not one piece that I would consider "filler", to the contrary the entire CD is exceptional. I do not have one or two favorites on this CD, the whole CD is a favorite of mine.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise........2002-12-11

I never heard of Medwyn Goodall ?! ... I love different kind of music : from Kraftwerk to Kitaro . And this what this music reminded me - Kitaro , Deep Forest , Anigma . But it is not the same , just a little different . I defenatly fell in love with the pan fluite , which is used in most of the tracks on this album .
This music written with the use of traditional South American instruments and it relexes you in a strange way - your body getting soft and kind of weak , but your mind getting strong and kind of ready to take of and fly . I love this felling !

5 out of 5 stars NEVER CLOYING.......2002-08-17

This is probably my favorite CD. It would definitely be my one desert island CD. I listen to it in the morning, hop in my truck and listen to it while driving. Then, when I get home, it's still playing because I didn't shut it off. It's amazing how this CD never cloys my brain by over-playing. It is bright yet haunting, dramatic yet soothing, melodic yet never too sweet. Medicine Woman II is livelier and more upbeat, and I love it. However, I play this CD more than I play all my others combined. I want to buy this CD for friends and relatives. Everyone should hear it. It's impossible that anyone would ever dislike it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful ..........2005-10-30

What a flourishing way to complete a trilogy of fantastic, healing and spiritual music. As usual, all the tracks in this album are wonderful, but there are some that are superlative:

1. Invocation: This track has a very smooth cadence. Most impressively, the track dips and (kind of) plays in slow motion and then returns to the normal rhythm. Needless to say, all the instruments are timed and mixed to perfection.

2. Farewell To Darkness: This track is a perfect juxtaposition of uplifting and melancholy/reflective music. I have listened to this many times and discover it differently each time. This track resonates with the mind waves and I'll dub it as the "Thinking Body Dancing Mind" track.

4. Sherpa: In my opinion this is the best track on the album. The trademark Medwyn-style Peruvian flutes, the Spanish Guitar and the drums have all been played to perfection. The various instruments have been layered and come into play one after the other, creating a very soothing sonicscape. This track resonate with both the mind and the body and I'll dub it as the "Dancing Body Dancing Mind Track".

7. Temple Journey: The grand finale and the farewell track. This long track has an Au Revoir feel to it. It seems like the grand summation of all the tracks from this and the previous Medicine Woman albums.

Medwyn has really raised the bar for new-age music and reaffirmed his position as one of the best musicians in this genre of music.

4 out of 5 stars Medwyn Goodall .......2005-07-19

I find Medwyn Goodall's music mesmerizing! I LOVE his Druid, his Merlin series, Grail Quest, King Authur. Guinevere, Clan -- all of his Celtic CD's... I'm a writer of fantasy, and no other musician has moved my creative hand like he does!

3 out of 5 stars Medicine Woman III.......2005-03-16

Although I enjoy Medwyn Goodall's music immensely, Medicine Woman III sounds very similar to a couple of his other CD's. I don't hear anything new and different on this particular CD. It's still very listenable, though.

5 out of 5 stars It's Great!!!.......2006-07-01

Very good!! Upbeat, all the songs are great. No weak link or anything. Lovely soothing and upbeat all at once in all the songs. Panpipes and Spanish guitar masterfully used. No pitiful electric sounds he plays many instruments very well, and records them all in his own home studio. Its Great!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing.......2006-02-23

This Medicine Woman was just as good as the first one. Both me and my husband enjoyed it very much. The first time we listened to this CD was a Sunday morning with our coffees and we were quite relaxed just being in the moment!! I am looking forward to purchasing the 3rd in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Medicine Woman.......2003-01-22

I have 22 Medwyn Goodall CDs (He's released over 70) so I am a big fan of his music. Medicine Woman II, The Gift was one of the first purchased and is still one of my favorites. The original Medicine Woman is excellent and a New Age classic, but this follow-up is an order of magnitude better. It is hard to imagine that only one person is responsible for all of the music here. Goodall composed, arranged, performed, produced, mixed and mastered this CD. It is guitars, panpipes, and lots of percussion in almost an hour of lively but soothing music that sets you down in the middle of the Central American jungles and then carries you away. Rhythmical and catchy tunes inspired by the ancient Mayan culture expand on the ideas explored in the original Medicine Woman plus introduce some new ones. With touches of male and female choirs and synths in the background, the music has an uplifting mystical quality.

4 out of 5 stars Good Medicine.......2002-12-17

Medwyn Goodall is no stranger to fans of world and new age music. Having released well over 20 albums, this is one of his more appreciated albums. "Medicine Woman II: The Gift" is a follow up to one of Goodall's earlier album release "Medicine Woman" but topples the previous release effortlessly with this relatively perfect collection of songs. One of the amazing factors of this album is that all ten tracks are instrumental pieces as vocals become part of the arrangement and there's not a word that is sung, but the messages and feeling are successfully conveyed through the use of various instruments such as the Spanish Guitar, Bamboo Flute, Mandolin, authentic South American drums along with a host of other instruments.

"Celebration" the opening track sets the mood for the album. It's an uplifting, positive track that sets mind at ease and takes you to a different place. Where you imagine you are standing within an exotic tropical rainforest and the unique sounds only helps to provide you with a more vivid picture. "Invocation Part 2" seamlessly follows through with the positive theme and the rest of the album flows effortlessly from one track to the next. The stand out track would have to be "The Gift", instantly attracting you with it's unique guitar arrangements and it's soothing Enya-like vocals.

Unfortunately, the main downfall of this album is that after listening to the first five tracks, the next five seems like a semi-altered collection of the first five tracks and you get the idea that no new grounds are broken into or explored and you get the feeling that you've heard it all before. As a whole, this album seems relatively complete even if it was released only with the first five tracks with "The Gift" being a severely major reason for purchasing the album itself. Some of Goodall's other releases are not as easily satisfying on the ear as this release but this is definitely the one that is set to please. The album actually is a mediocre 55 plus minutes but the first 28 minutes or so should do the job at setting your mind at ease.

From the wilds of Wyoming comes Crazy Woman Mountain, a new release from Nammy Award Songwriter of the Year , Gary Small. The CD will bring you back to how cool rock & roll used to be. It s packed with Stones meet the Ventures vibe! Small s surf and retro guitar styles lead you back to the 60 s, while his songs have the drive of the 70 s era Stones, yet this CD sounds contemporary and fresh. His lyrics are catchy, sly and at times just hysterical. No cry-baby angst ridden rock on this one. Check out what will soon be a North Dakota anthem: No Daka Girls and Native American inspired," Crazy Woman Mountain . Small was recently selected the guitarist for the Hall of Fame tribute to the late great rock & roll guitarist, Link Wray at the 8th annual Native American Music Awards. The Awards show is currently airing across the country on PBS.
