Amazon.com essential recording
Anyone looking for the key to Abba's enduring appeal should look no further than "Voulez Vous" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. Gold establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. "S.O.S." has a raw urgency in its chorus, and "Does Your Mother Know" draws its energy from classic '50s rock & roll. Likewise, you don't have to be Priscilla to swoon over "Mamma Mia" or "Dancing Queen." And when it comes to drama, those soaring vocals on "The Winner Takes It All" turn the song into a bitter anthem of every relationship that has ever fallen apart. The much-covered "Lay All Your Love on Me" is practically epic. --Steve Gdula

ABBA was/is Top of the Pops. But did you know these?.......2007-07-05
Nothing in this life has brought me more joy that ABBA. From the first time I heard Waterloo, until the fanatic state began with Fernando, they have had my heart like no other group. GOLD is the best essence of ABBA. It has the best of the best sans Summer Night City, which is on the subsequent More Gold. Their only pop rivals in sales were The Bee Gees and the enormously huge pop/disco group Boney M. Relative unknowns in the US. Check them out. Not so much Abba sounding, but if you like good melodies and irresistable hooks, great purchase. Another big, but short-lived pop group was Clout. Much more like Abba. Highly recommended.
Better music.......2007-06-27
I have tried to get some of thier CDs for some time but this CD was worth the wait, sounds are great and are a "sing along with" mode, great CD.
One of the best Swedish imports.......2007-05-24
Abba's Greatest Hits lives up to its title. This is an excellent comp album. All of the hits are here [I am just old enough to remember Abba's heyday]. This is a very good, very well-rounded collection of Abba's recordings. There's not a lame song on here. The album can be listened to straight through without ever being tempted to hit the skip button. Simply some of the best pop music ever, not just from the 70s. Abba was a bright spot of the 70s, countering a bad presidency and wicked gas prices. Hmmmm, we have those back again, come to think of it. Where's our Abba?
Make sure this is what you're looking for........2007-05-16
Abba was a pretty prolific and popular group in the 70s. For those of us familiar with ABBA, this album is great. Those who aren't might want to give this a try. You've probably heard some of their tunes before without even realizing it was ABBA. Note that there is another greatest hits collection called the Definitive Collection. It's a 2 disc set that contains everything on this album, some lesser hits and a remix or two as well. For the die hard fan you might want to check into the Definitive Collection (or the Complete Studio Collection for you ABBA freaks out there). For the passing fan like myself, all of the great stuff is here.
Awesome.......2007-04-12
This compilation contains all of the biggest hits by ABBA. It starts off with a great 1-2 punch of "Dancing Queen" and "Knowing Me, Knowing You". The hits just keep on coming, "Waterloo", "Gimmie a Man After Midnight", "Voules Vouz", "Fernando", "SOS", "I Had a Dream". There are a couple songs I wish were on here like "People Need Love", "If It Wasn't for the Night" and Frida's solo hit "I Know There's Something Going On".

Hooray for Hollywood!.......2007-07-22
I bought this CD to go with an Academy Awards/Hollywood Walk-of-Fame theme party that I did for work. It really lent that dramatic mood that I was looking for to usher in the theme as people entered that room on the first day after it was decorated.
Please also see my review for the CD Beautiful Hollywood.
Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24
For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.
We really enjoyed hearing all of the old movie themes.......2005-09-30
we put this CD in on a long road trip. We played a guessing game as to which one knew the movie. The music was excellent.
Outstanding Film Music.......2005-09-10
This is an outstanding collection of film music. The sound is qulity is very good. The selections cover a good range from various film genres and time periods. I like this CD.
An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 1.......2005-08-22
Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' interpretation of film scores on this first tribute to Hollywood is somewhat a mixed bag. A SUMMER PLACE was beautifully executed and true to the nature of this sensitive film that was made during a time of innocence. The BEN HUR, CAPTAIN BLOOD and OUT OF AFRICA selections were good. The interpretation of GOLDFINGER was a rather bizarre and blatantly bombastic exercise in overkill. This is a good CD for me because of the A SUMMER PLACE selection.

Customer Reviews:
Great Album.......2007-02-07
If you enjoy Three Dog Night, this is the album for you. I have played this CD way too much since I purchased it. The songs are still as fresh as they were 30 years ago and the sound quality is wonderful. Highly recommend if you are a fan.
Greatest Hits for the Greatest Price.......2002-10-01
I will take this from the GREATEST HITS perspective. We have the Millenium Collection, a few multi-disk anthologies, GOLDEN BISQUITS, and this import. This is by far the best deal for those who just want the hits, and not all the album tracks, (and there are quite a few good ones).
All of the singles are here, from the biggest (Joy To The World) to personal favorites like "Out In The Country". It would be redundant to go track by track, since like Creedence Clearwater in the same time frame, they were Single Machines who also put out great albums as well.
If you want just the best for a good price, this is it. If you want a completist collection, go for the multi disk anthology.
You can't go wrong with the music, for one of the best Vocal Bands of the era, with the tightest backup band since Booker T's MG's.
Comprehensive Collection.......2001-01-16
A very comprehensive collection of their late 60s/early 70s hits. When they were good, they were brilliant, as demonstrated in the exuberant Joy To The World, the moody, atmospheric Mama Told Me Not To Come (a description of a weird party), and the reggae rhythms of Black & White (first done by Greyhound), Show Must Go On (a Leo Sayer song) and Family Of Man. But their slower soft rock ballads like Old Fashioned Love Song, Never Been To Spain etc. never appealed to me although they were big hits. This band is hard to classify, they strode the rock/pop divide with great aplomb, perhaps like Paul Revere & The Raiders.
Good by modern standards, too.......2000-06-13
Some people review CDs like this from a historical perspective. That's fine, but I prefer to pretend it was just released, and examine its musical value. There's a lot of good stuff, 20 whole tracks, of which three are outstanding: Joy to the World, Old Fashioned Love Song, and Black and White. I remember Joy from my college days. "Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea" would amuse my chess-playing friends every time it came on the radio, as "fish" is a derogatory term for a weak chess player. We were all fish. And we can all enjoy the same music today, whatever the context.

The hit songs for a reasonable price.......2004-06-17
This is a great little Richard sampler that covers his middle period, and some later period, these are msotly hits, and thier is a great interview with Little Richard at the end. This is pioneering r&b jump blues music. And all the songs are fun and wild, from the opening classic Lucille(with a horn section) to Hound Dog. You'll Love richards boogie woogie piano style and his screeching vocals(reminiscent almost of Ruth Brown at times!). Many of these songs are on the bluesy(or jump blues side). And msot of the tracks feature a big band bancking up Richard's boogie piano and vocals. GREAT CD!!!

Greatest-hits collections often deprive the listener of the chance to experience an artist's true scope of talent. Not so with Steve Miller. His strength has always been more in crafting an occasional blast of FM-radio heaven rather than a dozen solid album tracks. Greatest Hits 1974-78 chronicles the best singles from Miller's most successful years, after he veered from Haight-Ashbury bluesy trippiness to more accessible blues-based pop-rock. There are the slippery grooves of "The Joker" and "Fly Like an Eagle," and there's the air-guitar-beckoning riff-rock of "Take the Money and Run," "Jungle Love," "Rock 'n Me," and "Jet Airliner." Don't expect groundbreaking art, expect references to the "pompatus of love" and instant gratification. Requisite listening at the classic-rock keg party. This gold version of the title offers superior sound quality for a higher price than the standard-issue CD. --Neal Weiss
Customer Reviews:
A Roundup Of Space Cowboy Hits.......2007-08-04
This is another Greatest Hits release from the Steve Miller Band, (after Greatest Hits 1968-73), offering a collection of his greatest hits from the highest point of his career, in the mid 1970s. In this 14-song package, 13 of the hits come from two of his albums, released in adjacent years 1976 (Fly Like An Eagle,(FLAE)), and 1977 (Book Of Dreams, (BOD)). The songs for these two albums were recorded at the same time, but split among two albums rather than being released on an extra long album with more than 20 songs on it. The 14th hit stands alone as being derived from an older album, The Joker, (1973). Although this last song is unusual in that it was extracted from an older album, it is perhaps a harbinger of what was to arrive in the near future. This bluesy, humorous song is about a funny character who is described in many terms: "picker, grinner, lover, sinner"; "joker, smoker, midnight toker"; "Space Cowboy, Gangster of Love, Maurice". Each of these last three names is followed by a wacky guitar symbol.
Six of these 14 songs come from the immensely popular FLAE album, released in 1976. At least half of the songs in that album can be considered hits. That album represents many different styles of music: rock 'n' roll, folk, country, and the blues, as well as SM's unique spacey style. The songs from that album included in this GH collection are: "Fly Like An Eagle" (FLAE song), perhaps the best-known song of his career and most heavily played on AOR and oldies radio stations. This album-oriented song is marked by organ accompaniment to his mellow plea for food, clothing, and shelter for the people who lack them. "Wild Mountain Honey" (WMH) is a sequal to the "FLAE" song on the original album, with fancy organ accompaniment and light drum tapping that serve as a backdrop to Steve's vocals. Both of these songs are marked by a unique Steve Miler sound of spacey, novel organ frills on the original FLAE album. Folk guitar can be heard in the rapid strumming of "Serenade" and in "Take The Money And Run", a story of a man and woman trying to rob some cash. A rock 'n' roll number is "Rock N Me", a memorable piece with a hint of southern blues similar to Roy Orbison or Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR). Finally, there is the country-sounding "Dance Dance Dance", a good choice for down-to-earth, backyard parties.
The remaining seven songs come from the Book of Dreams (BOD) album, released in 1977 (although it was recorded at the same time as the FLAE album.) These seven songs represent over half of the dozen tracks on the BOD album, or 7/12 songs of that album. The instrumental "Threshold" features an organ that rises and falls in pitch smoothly, sort of like the sound of an airplane taking off, landing, or flying overhead. This track leads directly into "Jet Airliner", one of the very popular hits with the folk and southern rock style reminiscent of CCR. Other southern rock-style hits include "True Fine Love" that also sound like CCR, and "The Stake", a love song with guitar work similar to The Eagles or Joe Walsh. "Winter Time" is a folk/soft rock hit that highlights a folk guitar and harmonica, in a poem about the characteristics of winter outdoors. Steve does a very creative production of the party song "Swingtown", in which he plays with a variety of instruments, as well as the organ. Another track with Steve's unique style of toying with musical instruments is "Jungle Love", a rock 'n' roll love song that begins and ends with whistles and squeaks that probably mimic birds and monkeys and other creatures found in the jungle. This was one of his most popular hits on the radio and also on his GH album.
Overall, this album would earn 5 stars for the creativity and uniqueness of SM's songs, for nobody else seems to produce a sound quite like his. However, some of these tracks are abbreviated, a couple severely. The "FLAE" song has been severely edited at both the beginning and end parts, most notably eliminating the organ trills and scales found at the ending part. More than 1 and 1/2 minutes have been chopped off this song. "Jet Airliner" has also been butchered in places, reducing its impact that was suggested by the title. Almost one minute has been removed here. "Dance Dance Dance" is the third song that has been drastically shortened here, with nearly a minute removed. "Swingtown" has also been shortened by nearly half a minute.
Also, the producers could have placed the FLAE song and WMH together as in the original FLAE album. Fortunately, they have placed "Threshold" and "Jet Airliner" together. Also notably absent are some songs like "Mercury Blues" from the FLAE album, which was a popular hit: a blues-type song about a special car that the singer dreams of having in his possession. This very popular and well-known hit was remade by another artist about 18 years later, using another style.
With the 14 songs in the GH album, even if all of them were full-length, unedited forms, the CD with an 80-minute capacity would be able to accommodate them. The CD with this capacity would also be able to include additional songs such as "Mercury Blues" in its full length for a remastered 15-track album. The original GH album was released on vinyl LP with a 60-minute capacity; even this would be sufficient to accommodate the original 14 songs in full-length form: they still would have amounted to less than 50 minutes. A better remastered GH album would have at least 15 songs in its lineup (the original 14 songs plus "Mercury Blues.") Fortunately, other versions of SM's GH albums have since been produced and released.
With its faults, this album deserves about 3+2/3 to 4 stars. If detailed ratings were possible, the creativity and novelty of songs earns 6 stars on a 5-point scale (really), inclusion and coverage of all available SM songs would bring 4 stars, but the edited versions of songs deserve only 1 or 2 stars. Due to the greatness of SM's creations, this album will receive the benefit of the doubt and get 4 stars here.
Miller Time!.......2007-07-17
This Steve Miller album gets 5 stars largely on its strength as a compilation. All of the Steve Miller hits you know from the radio are on this disc. It's all you need for an overview of Steve Miller and for slapping in the CD player when you're at a party and want some 70s rock on. This stuff is good, simple, rock music. Steve's vocals are well-backed by the guitars. Very solid album.
Dollars and (common) cents........2007-06-21
I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
This is a rather fine example of what a greatest hits CD should be. A bunch of really good songs with not much in the way of "filler".
Tracks 1,2,3,4,8,9 & 11 are the popular classics you'll know from the radio. (Tracks 6,12 & 13 aren't that popular, but they grow on you). So you get $7 worth of essential tracks for the current Amazon price of $8. Not bad. (You can get each of these songs individually from iTunes and save yourself $1). Two other good songs from Steve Miller, that fall outside the 1974-1978 range, are "Abracadabra" and "Living in the USA". Don't go and pay $14 for the "Young Hearts" greatest hits CD just to get these two additional songs. I'd buy each of them on iTunes for $1, if available.
Hope this helps.

A wonderful CD of some of Mr. Miller's best tunes. This is a staple for those times when you want to kick back and relax, and just fade into your memories. Super tunes.

I Confess; I Don't Have This One*.......2004-11-11
As I write this, I am grateful to find nobody has reviewed it, otherwise, there would likely be at least one aspiring rockabilly strummer to point out the shortage of tunes by the Johnny Burnette Trio. As it is, there are a few of his charted songs missing, but not too many. Most obvious is beyond the few if impressive hits JB had in 1960-61, there are a wealth of songs from other artists he covered and I HAVE heard THEM*. Pop music lovers really didn't buy that many albums back then; we waited for the hit single and laid our dollar down. "Girl of My Best Friend" as done by Elvis Presley and later by his imitator, Ral Donner, is one notable cover tune here. Then there was "Moody RIver" (Pat Boone), "Mona Lisa" (more than one), "Dream Lover" (Bobby Darin), "Lover's Question" (Clyde McPhatter), "Let's Think About Living" (Bob Luman), "Crying in the Chapel" (The Orioles, Elvis P), "It's Only Make Believe" (Conway Twitty), etc etc. In some cases the tunes were the signature songs of the original artists. Those are the ones you should own. There are better Burnette compilations; you'll find them (and whining rockabill-ers) on Amazon.

The Original And Most Enduring Teen Idol.......2006-06-25
From 1957 to 1962, RICKY NELSON charted thirty Top 40 hits, more than any other artist at the time except Elvis Presley. Thirty Top 40 chart hits in a six year run is very impressive, considering that some recording artists racked up a possible two dozen hits over a couple decades' time span[if not more] during the Rock Era.[These thirty Top 40 hits does not include the dozens of other "45's" Nelson charted on the lower 60 chart positions throughout the remainder of his almost thirty year career, which was cut short by his untimely death in a plane crash while on one of his music tours in 1985.] Many of Ricky's early records[vinyl 45's] where double hits with both the "A" side and the "B" side placing/peaking a position on the Billboard and Cashbox Magazine Hot 100 Singles charts, plus receiving massive radio station airplay during each single's[recording] respective heyday.
While Nelson preferred uptempo rockers like "Hello Mary Lou", "It's Late", "Stood Up" and "Be-Bop Baby", his smooth, calm voice made him a natural to sing ballads. He had major success with "Travelin' Man", "Poor Little Fool", "Young World", "Lonesome Town", "Never Be Anyone Else", and "Teenage Idol", which clearly could have been about Ricky himself at the time. 1964's "For You" would be his last Top 40 hit until 1970 when he recorded Bob Dylan's "She Belongs To Me" with the Stone Canyon Band. In 1972, he would chart into the Top 40 one final time with his enduring Top 10 hit, "Garden Party".
25 GREATEST HITS compiles Ricky Nelson's impressive initial chart hits[1957-62] in their original alluring versions for his multi-generation fan base to enjoy in remastered sound. Nelson is also credited with being the original and very first Teen Idol, a title he occasionally shunned, and preferred to be recognised as a musician, which he ultimately was. Despite the promotional aspects of his career, it is clear that Nelson knew and loved music and was a credible performer before he became a Teen Idol, largely due to his parents' musical background. Both Ozzie and Harriet Nelson were Big Band musicians/singers during the early years of their careers throughout the 1930's and 1940's - he was the younger son of Ozzie Nelson, the leader of a big band, and Harriet Hilliard Nelson, the band's singer.
Along with brother David Nelson, the family starred in the long-running radio and television series "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet" from 1944 to 1966; with Ricky's singing[career] often featured in the show's weekly themes and gaining him national exposure to his unique musical attributes. His record sales skyrocketed into the millions, and is credited with selling close to 70 million of his own recordings. I can recall seeing him on his parent's TV show reruns when I was a child, and proudly became his fan at age 7. Many of the songs on "25 GREATEST HITS" have become staples of modern day Oldies/Classic Pop-Rock oriented radio stations. RICKY NELSON remains the most enduring, interesting and gifted of all the Teen Idols, the ultimate musician among them all and he will never be forgotten.
Ricky Nelson makes me young again.......2006-03-25
I had forgotten what it was like to be "A Teenager in Love" until I listened to this CD. There I was 13, 15, 16 years old thinking I was a "Poor Little Fool" because of some young romance gone wrong or "I'm in Love Again" over some new young man. This CD not only causes me to smile remembering my youth, it is a pleasure hearing that rich sultry voice and the rock and roll music that was to change the world.
Ricky Nelson 25? Greatest Hits.......2006-03-16
1st, Ricky Nelson didn't have 25 great hits. This CD has only four of his best recordings and my favorite - Garden Party is missing. He has very good renditions of other artists work, lots of the songs he sings on this CD, I have never heard before. Had I known what was included and was wasn't, I would have left it on the shelf. If you like anything Ricky Nelson sings, then buy this CD. If you are looking for his most popular, keep looking.
This is an excellent ricky nelson disc with 25 hits.and is similar to the new greatest hits album, with a few different tracks........2005-12-28
This is a very good disc with many of rickys top 10 hits and few lesser known tracks...There are many ricky nelson collections out there...Ricky,s music has not been fully appreciated over the years...Perhaps the new dvd release and the greatest hit cd ,will change this...Now i like this album very much to,but i hate that i have so many duplicate tracks,on several of the cd,s i own of ricky...4 star recommended...

Obsolote because of newer, better comp.......2005-05-13
The Cars had kind of two personalities over their career: the pop hits like "Drive" and "Shake it Up" and the album tracks that classic rock radio still plays like "Moving in Stereo" and "You're All I've Got Tonight". This album is great if you ONLY want the pop material...all the Top 40 hits are here...but if you like any of their best album material at all, you'll be much better off with the CD "Complete Greatest Hits" (ASIN B00005Y1XY) which sacrifices only lesser track "Heartbeat City" from this one and then adds on several great tracks you don't get here:
"Bye Bye Love", "You're all I've Got Tonight" and "Moving in Stereo" from the debut, CANDY-O's "Dangerous Type" and "It's All I Can Do",HEARTBEAT CITY's "Hello Again" (and "Why Can't I Have You?" if you happen to like that one..I consider it a lesser effort), and even a track from the farewell album DOOR TO DOOR ("You are the Girl").
If such things matter to you, they also come in chronological order (though those prone to whining about it could always program their CD player or burn a copy for the car in the "correct" order).
BOTTOM LINE:
If you like the Cars, this one doesn't serve them as well for a single disc compilation as "Complete Greatest Hits" does. Get that one instead.
A great C.D. to Drive to........2000-06-22
After visiting a c.d. store, I wanted to buy "The Cars: Greatest Hits", but it the store only had the album on gold c.d. It was very expensive, but I listen to it all the time, and you will too. You will remember most of the songs on this c.d. instantly. People say that gold c.d's sound better, I'm sure they do, but it was nothing that I realy noticed. It's not going to matter if you buy the gold c.d. or the regular, they both sound the same to me.Whatever format you choose though, you will not be disapointed. Get this c.d. if your a casual Cars fan or a die hard fan, you will like it either way. It's like Devo, but not as geeky.

Amazon.com essential recording
It's a measure of Roy Orbison's classics that even some of the uptempo songs that break up the dominant balladic mood of this 20-song collection are themselves fairly melancholic. Rarely does Orbison allow himself the outright celebration of something like "Mean Woman Blues," more often going for the shades of gray that slip into "Blue Angel" and "Leah." Few could do what he achieves on these singles, and not just because few are gifted with such a voice. The biggest achievement of all may be Orbison's ability to make a devastated cry like "Only the Lonely" sound somehow peaceful. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Great sounds from the Best.......2007-07-25
This CD brought back lots of good memories. Roy Orbison was one of the Greats, Saw him in person years ago and will never forget the great voice he had. I recommend buying this CD
Best 1 disc Orbison collection.......2007-05-27
This is the best single disc collection of Roy Orbison's Monument hits. It was originally released on 2 LPs in the early 80's. One thing I've always wondered about is that this 20 track CD has always been also available as 2 separate volumes with 10 tracks each & having the same cover artwork (you'd have to be careful to read the list of tracks on the back) Why?? If someone is an Orbison fan why would they want one volume & not the other? Why not just have all 20 tracks on one CD, as it is done here? Also, one reviewer asks why "You Got It" isn't here, well it's because that song wasn't even recorded yet when this album was released, and that song was on Virgin Records, not Monument.
It is Roy Orbison.......2007-03-29
What more can be said? Roy Orbison has a quality of voice that can't be duplicated. One of the few really original and great voices.
Sound is good.......2007-03-21
I would like to suggest, contrary to the review of Aug 2006, that the sound on this nice collection of Roy Orbison's Monument hits, is actually quite good.
With the puzzling exception of the song LOVE HURTS, which seems to have been mastered from a very muffled tape.
This Sony disk was issued in 1989, and has not been re-mastered since then, so you're getting a relatively unfutzed edition for a nominal price.
All time greatest Hits of Roy Orbison.......2007-01-10
Love this CD. Just what I ezpected and wanted. Would recommend it to my friends.
