Sleeping Under the Stars.......2006-03-06

I love this CD! I read some of the other reviews about this CD in which the writer complained about hearing the sound of a fire poker being used which kind of disrupts the recording. I have to disagree that the sound is a disruption. To me this CD is so realistic that it reminds me of going camping out in the forest and sleeping under the stars. The place where I used to camp (At Lake Arrowhead, CA) had metal fire boxes and the sound is exactly what I remember. There is popping, and crackling and the sound of the metal cooking grate settling and the fire poker being used. I can almost smell the cedar and pine smoke! I use this CD a lot after a particularly stressful day because once I close my eyes and listen, I am immediately transported to the mountains and the forest. Then I fall asleep next to a crackling campfire under the stars.

Not too Thrilled with this CD.......2005-07-22

What is supposed to be a crackling fire sounds more like bacon sizzling in a skillet. It took lots of imagination to replace that bacon-image with a crackling campfire.

Another poster mentioned an irritating background "roar". Mine has it too. It sounds like wind blowing during a winter blizzard. It's very annoying. Thinking my machine might be causing it I played the disc on two different CD players. Both produced the same sound.

To make things worse, every few minutes there's a clanking noise. It's supposed to be someone poking at the fire until the firewood falls onto the hot coals. It sounds more like a campstove falling apart.

So instead of a crackling fire on a serene summer's eve, I'm imagining breakfast being cooked on a rickety Coleman stove during a raging winter storm.

Not that this is a bad thing, but it wasn't exactly what I had in mind. I give the disc 3 stars for creating some interesting and delightful confusion.

WARM AND COZY.......2004-06-07

i bought this in the middle of winter and it makes sitting in the study so much more comfortable. this cd sounds just like my own fireplace. i want to give the people who made this cd a big warm cuddle.

relaxing, sounds real.......2004-01-30

I put on this cd when I come home from work and it helps me wind down. Watching tv at night with lights low and this recording on, it sounds just like a real fireplace in the room. Also helps you to sleep if you are a bit tense. At some points in the cd, there is sound of someone using fireplace tools to add/remove logs. You feel relaxed, cozy and snug.

Can't Live Without This.......2002-10-18

This CD is so good that I even play it when I've got a real fire going in the fireplace.

You can almost smell the smoke.......2000-11-18

I got this CD because I love a good fire in the fireplace, which my current house does not have, or out camping. It certainly does the sound effects very well, all cozy, warm, crackling - too well for me actually, as I find it hard to put it on and not think there's a fire SOMEWHERE in the house: it makes me a little nervous. So it does a great job. Very realistic, and I'm sure relaxing - for someone else!

Wonderful CD.......2003-10-30

This is an absolutely great CD with great lyrics, but it pales in comparison to seeing them live, which I had the good fortune to twice this past year.

Great Debut.......2002-06-13

Aaron Katz is a talented and versatile musician. The drummer and singer from NH-based jam band Percy Hill (another great buy if you find them) Katz focuses on his singing, songwriting and instruments in his solo debut. Written by himself, Katz plays not only drums but also the guitar and keyboards, with a solid backing band on the album and on tour. The songs themselves are very easy to drift into, with background synth and keyboards layered over careful drums to make a melody that would be welcomed on today's radio. The funky song entitled "The Now" shows how Katz can operate musically, while "Aubade" nad "Simplest Warrior" show off his keen musical ear and talent for writing lyrics. Buy this album and you buy a talent as well as hopefully supporting an artist needed in these times.

Another great solo album in 2001..........2001-12-28

I have been a fan of Percy Hill's music for quite some time, so I was really looking forward to hearing this new solo album from Aaron Katz and let me tell you it has definitly met my expectations and then some. Percy Hill's last studio album "Color in Bloom" was one of the finest records to come out of the late nineties and the things that I really liked in Aaron's compositions on that record are even more evident on this solo disc although more sublime. The music incorporates elements of fusion, jazz and soul without letting any one style crowd the overall feel of the disc. The songs are concise and well arranged and you can tell that a lot went into their writing. I got to catch his show recently in Chicago and I was impressed with the energy of the live band - toned down on the improv while highlighting each song's energy and arrangement.
I really had a hard time trying to find anything I didn't like about this new album. It may have seemed a little more mellow and subdued than his songs on Color in Bloom but after a couple listens I realized that Simplest Warrior shows a great trait of a good studio album - saying a lot more with less. If your a fan of fusion and soul and appreciate well written intelligent songs, pick this album up - It was a very welcome addition to my collection and I hope more people hear it.

Excellent solo disc from leader of Percy Hill.......2001-12-14

This is the solo disc from one of the main songwriters from Percy Hill. Percy Hill's last album, "Color In Bloom" is one of the finest studio discs from a 'jamband' ever released. This is the first studio release following that fine cd. Picking up right where he left off with Percy Hill, Aaron Katz creates fascinating aural collages (incorporating elements of Steely Dan) while retaining his signature groove. The tunes are all very good here, with his very recognizable voice in fine form. Highly recommended.
