I bought this looking to replace another thunderstorm CD that was just too loud and startling. At the price, I wasn't expecting much, but it's wonderful. Soothing waves, gentle thunder and no new age music.

I LOVE this cd. When I first moved to WA I was still afraid of thunderstorms, even after years of living in CA where they are a winter event. Then my husband bought a cd that featured thunderstorms and began playing it at night to help him sleep. Gradually I began to NOT be so afraid. Then one night I actually went outside during a thunderstorm, and wasn't afraid. So, I bought this cd and it has helped me relax at night and sleep better.

I love the ocean and this is the only way to hear it in Kansas. I use this CD to wake up with instead of an annoying alarm sound.

This CD has a very realistic sound of waves, sometimes gentle and sometimes crashing. Over these waves, thunder rolls in from far away and gets more intense. The great thing about the thunder is that it is building more and more, like a real thunderstorm. But if you are listening to relax, like I was, it does not get so loud that it startles you awake, as many of the storm CDs I have bought before have. It is also not a CD that sounds like someone recorded 30 seconds of a storm and put it on a loop. The sounds and the storm vary throughout. Before I ordered this, I read some of the reviews complaining about the bird in the background. I heard it a couple different times during the CD. It is not loud or distracting and only lasts for a few seconds. It is like a bird flying by and is very accurate to what you would hear sleeping by the shore. The is the cheapest CD I have purchased, but it is by far the best I have heard! You won't regret buying this.

This CD does exactly what it is supposed to do--almost trick you into thinking you're listening to a storm over the ocean. There is no distracting music, just thunderstorm and ocean sounds. A very good deal, a solid hour of soothing music that does not get old if you put it on repeat. Very relaxing, also good as white noise.

Heavy whitewash, a distant storm, and shy little sea birds........2004-10-13

This natural journey starts with a few seconds' fading in of some whitewash upon the beach.Quite heavy whitewash.But this is quite a helpful tact, because it sets the maximum volume straight from the outset.The rain is of course pouring, but the waves win out in the battle for noisiness.There are thunder cracks appearing from many distances.Unfortunately for myself (though for others, it may very well be a positive), the storm is content to play in the further distance.None of it vears too close to your window.The creatures are pretty shy, too.Sea birds have a few quiet words.But their tiny squeaky voices don't visit often enough.
On a previous cd I had, the closer-up thunder would CLAP me out of my down-time.So it's realism killed any potential calming effect (presuming that a down-time experience was it's motive).This cd here, levels things out instead.Though slightly to a fault, for mine.I think that the thunder was perhaps wearing a volumous uniform.Nature's mood swings were neutralized a bit.There are ways of capturing God's most prized racousness, yet without shipwrecking your mode of restfulness.(But perhaps a higher budget, and more expertise is needed to do it).So, this cd doesn't master nature's variety, nor it's crispness.But, it is easy to lay down with, and doesn't come close to bothering you.(I've not alot to compare with, so take my 3.5* rating as a beginner's call.Oh and, it has NO music).Rest in peace, all.In the 'alive' sense, of course.

when i first bought it and played it i found it quite relaxing, i would assume from the associations in my mind between the sounds of the surf and experiences i have had at beaches. but after playing it a lot, the association changed to being in my study, and the constant pounding of the waves became anything but relaxing. dont get me wrong, this cd is very good, but just not something i can listen to over and over (which was really what i wanted it for).

"Thunder by the Sea" captures the best of both worlds: the rolling ocean surf and the gentle rumble of thunder. Unlike other recordings of the ocean surf, "Thunder by the Sea" isn't punctuated or dominated by the sound of seagulls. There are some seagull sounds to be sure but they're very brief and are only part of the backgound. This disc will jarr you awake at times as the sound of the surf hitting the shore is rather intensense but for the most part, this is a very relaxing and easy to listen to recording. Recommended.
