Old Christmas Carols.......2007-01-12

Wonderful in style and execution; I thought that I had heard the best but I was wrong. Anything from Loreena McKennitt is truly an amazing experience!

A Haunting Experience.......2006-12-12

The best word I can come up with for Loreena McKennitt's voice is "haunting". I almost said ethereal and that would have been correct too but I chose haunting because it is one that keeps coming back to me. It makes me wonder if I really heard some of the things it said. In this context, that is a good thing.

This is a collection of "Christmas" songs but it is definitely not a collection of carols. They are songs of midwinter and the voice and instrumentation conveys that theme as well as the lyrics. They would not be out of place in a medieval hall.

This is not a somber collection but it might well be perceived as such by someone expecting ditties about reindeer with red noses or jolly old elves. It is a joyous collection with the joy is sedate, as is the whole album. That does not stop it from being a masterful work of art.

Try this one and let it haunt your memories through the winter and the rest of the year.

Most Christmas albums sound tailor-made for mall muzak -- bland and recycled, with the same ol' songs about bells, Santa Claus, and snow. Loreena McKennitt breaks the mold with "To Drive the Cold Winter Away," an enchantingly wintry collection with muted instrumentation, and a classic feel.

It opens with the ethereal "In Praise of Christmas," a languid little harp ballad, and the rich "Seasons," which sounds like a solo performance at a medieval banquet. "Come all you lads and lasses, I'd have you give attention/To these few lines I'm about to write here,/'Tis of the four seasons of the year that I shall mention,/The beauty of all things doth appear," McKennitt sings in her rolling voice.

Those songs set the tone of the remaining songs -- pretty, airy wintry ballads accompanied mostly by harp. A few exceptions are sprinkled through it, such as the icily pretty instrumental "Banquet Hall," languid harp music in "Snow," and a few songs like "Let All That Are to Mirth Inclined" are done without instrumentation at all.

It's not hard to get sick of the endless repetitions of "Jingle Bells," "The Christmas Song" and "Let It Snow." It comes to the point where people get violent at mall loudspeakers. Loreena McKennitt's "To Drive the Cold Winter Away" is an antidote of sorts -- she dips into traditional Christmas and winter ballads from England, Scotland and Ireland, sometimes going back hundreds of years.

On the other hand, the sound quality is worse than McKennitt's other albums, particularly her a capella songs. While her singing cannot be faulted, she sang them in an old Irish abbey, which causes a weird echo effect in some songs. Her voice doesn't sound quite on top form in these.

However, the instrumentation often covers this effect -- it's much more minimal than in most of Mckennitt's work, often with her merely playing harps, and occasionally a tin whistle or accordian. The ethereal, minimal instrumentation gives the feeling of chilliness and beauty in a winter forest.

It's a bit hard to sing some old ballads, especially since many do not have specific tunes assigned to them. McKennitt does well at this; despite a few awkward moments, she sings richly and soulfully. "The King," her duet with Cedric Smith, is not so great, however since Smith's mediocre voice often blots out hers completely. Aside from that, her voice lilts lightly over the songs about Christ, snow, and firesides during the winter.

"To Drive the Cold Winter Away" is a truly beautiful collection of traditional Christmas songs. Despite the occasional echo problems, McKennitt's sweet voice and music bring out an older, richer side of Christmas.

A Very Special SEASONAL, or ANYTIME Album from Loreena McKennitt.......2007-06-16

Everyone wants to label this a Christmas Album.......well, that's ok, but personally I would tell them "please don't do that!"

This is a VERY special album. Go up, here, and click on the links to the samplings from this album. Now, remember you're only gonna get about 28 seconds, totally out of context from each listing.....NOT the way to experience this music at all! But, perhaps it will "tweak" your ears and get you to go to your nearest music shop and pick up this truly unique album.

I begin listening to this album in the late fall, when the leaves are just gone, and right through until they appear again in the spring. I do not consider this a Christmas album. This is a Seasonal album to me, that being, leafless trees, brisk chilly winds and breezes, snowfall, and icicles on limbs and eves, little winter birds, etc. Christmas music to me is Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Winter Wonderland type stuff, and Carols. The music here is more "old age" stuff, yes, a carol or two, but not too familiar to you, and this makes this album SO VERY SPECIAL....it IS things that you've not heard before, so no "ugh, THAT again!" type thoughts when a selection starts.

A definite "Must-Have", and I would seek it out soon, as it is an older one, and I'm not sure if her work would go out of print or not. You NEED this album, trust me again! ~operabruin

More gentle, clear-voiced beauty from vocalist/arranger/multi-instrumentalist Loreena McKennitt--this time a collection of rarely heard seasonal songs from England, Ireland and Scotland with a few original compositions thrown in for good measure. As with her prior album, "Elemental," McKennitt's arrangements here are filled with a spare but striking magic--in this case, reminiscent of the quiet stillness of a snowfall as it blankets the world in soft, crystaline white. The music was recorded in Annaghmakerrig, Ireland; Glenstal Abbey, England; and the Church of our Lady, Guelph (in Canada). In the album's liner notes, McKennitt writes, "as a child, my most vivid impression of music for the winter season came from songs and carols recorded in churches or great halls, rich with their own unique ambience and tradtition. In that spirit I have ventured into several similar locations that I have come to cherish in my travels ... The arrangements are sparse but somehow I felt that reflected the dynamics of the fall and winter seasons, and that their can be much beauty in such simplicity." I can't say it any better. Some of the songs are performed by McKennitt alone as harp-embellished vocals. Others feature understated harmonies and accompaniments by guest artists Shannon Purvis-Smith (viols) and Cedric Smith (vocals). If track #5, "Snow," sounds familiar, that might be because it also appears on one of McKennitt's later albums, "A Winter Garden." Loreena McKennitt's next album is "Parallel Dreams." Compare her work with that of rich-voiced singer Susan McKeown in "Lowlands" and the haunting a cappella ballads of Niamh Parsons in such albums as "Loosely Connected."

Warm your heart this winter.......2005-12-21

"To Drive the Cold Winter Away" belongs in every music lover's library. Stunningly and breathtakingly gorgeous in its wondrous sincerity and elegant tranquility--if you can find a more lovely, soulful winter album, please let me know--and good luck! There's no other singer in the world, imo, that can hold a candle to the angelic voice of Loreena. Every single song is Flawless. TDTCWA is truly a five star album. Buy it now, trust me.

Soar!

not my absolute favorite McKennitt, But.............2005-07-08

I love the Celtic sounds and stories of Loreena McKennitt's CDs. They take me back to another time, and I fancy I can see the misty moors, the dashing men on horseback, the travels to exotic places. If I close my eyes, there are the castles, the Lady of Shalott floating off to Camelot. Alas, this one didn't transport me very far. I loved Banquet Hall, in which I could see and smell the Yule log in the giant fireplace. The Stockford Carol carried me away, and Let All That Are To Mirth Inclined sounded most like the McKennitt I'm accustomed to. It sounds as though I didn't like it -but I Did like it! Just not as much. This album belongs in every McKennitt collection, to be cherished as a glimpse into the Dickens winter season, crisp and cold, a snowflake upon the tip of your nose; ladies in their velvet capes, laughing upon the arm of a dapper gent. Sticky balls and humbug candies, disappearing into little hands and mouths. It always seems as though a century has gone by since the last McKennitt CD has made its appearance. Don't wait till Christmas - you can play this anytime.

Loreena's Christmas Present.......2004-12-10

Loreena McKennitt's Christmas album, "To Drive The Cold Winter Away," is unlike any Christmas album you've ever heard. Forget "Jingle Bells" and "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer." These songs are mostly traditional English & Irish carols, with Loreena giving the songs a heavenly ambience by recording them in a church. In short, this album is simply beautiful, from the opening "In Praise Of Christmas," to the final, haunting piece, "Let All That Are To Mirth Inclined," featuring just Loreena's voice and the tolling of a church bell. Loreena sings like an angel, and her harp and accordion-playing are also perfect. A lovely disc to relax with by the fireplace, Loreena McKennitt's "To Drive The Cold Winter Away" is a must-own album for the holiday season.

Ensemble Galilei's music is lilting, elegant and unexpected!.......2002-11-29

With their soulful playing and artful, sometimes even ephemeral arrangements, the six women of Ensemble Galilei convey a rare depth of emotion. In the insert notes, gamba player Carolyn Ann Surrick describes their creative process: "[In making this recording, we engaged in]...a kind of work that is so focused and intense that years can go by in one afternoon... Extraordinary music-making requires trust... [We] live for the times when the only thing that exists right then is the music--when the instruments are speaking as if we don't exist, and they are having their own conversation." Thank you, Ensemble Galilei, for allowing the rest of us the privilege of coming along for the ride! It's simply delectable. This chamber ensemble, featuring fiddle, harp, gamba, oboe, pipes and percussion, can also be heard on their other Telarc release, "From the Isles to the Courts", and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music", on the Dorian label.

Sheer beauty, as a lover of English music I found this to be one of the most beautiful of all Shakespearean albums. Such harmony, such subtlety, one wishes that the gentle night will never stop.

Ensemble Galilei provide some excellent arrangements of English renaissance compositions. I believe that John Playford (English Dancing Master) fans will be particularly satisfied with the renditions presented here. It is very unfortunate that E.G. did not provide more arrangements from such early music sources. Some of E.G.'s own compositions seem very weak and not in the renaissance spirit of the rest of the CD. Nonetheless, this CD is highly recommmended.

I found this album to be solid. Very sweet, but not afraid to use percussion which makes it livelier and more fun. I adore the quiet, peacefulness of the music and the flawless execution of these renaissance songs.

Visualizing Beauty.......2000-08-20

I recently had the good fortune to direct a performance of King Lear--the ENTIRE five acts, in a community theatre, non-profit setting. I used twenty-four fully committed non-actors, who for the love of the ideas, participated in this performance. The first and main challenge that I faced was, how do I go "behind" the words, and invoke the right emotions, etc., to give these actors the range and tools needed for an effective, powerful performance? Critical to this performance was the beauty and brilliance of this recording, which I used throughout the various scenes of the play. This helped the performers tremendously, creating the different tapestries in the mind of the Bard. In short, this work is real genius, that I was so happy that I stumbled across. I am now putting in our performance programs, along with our most heart-felt thanks to E.G., the name of the recording and I have copies from Telarc to sell at each performance!

Great Unconventional Holiday Music.......2007-01-02

Wow! Loreena McKennitt has such a beautiful voice paired with the harp that makes this a must have holiday album for those fully stocked on run of the mill Christmas music. Includes some traditional British carols not so familiar in the US and some winter-themed songs she wrote that are quite mesmerizing.

You do have to get past the fact that these aren't songs that Americans necessarily associate with Christmas to actually enjoy it as a "Christmas album," but it's worth buying if not just to pull out for a few weeks every year and enjoy the sheer beauty of the music.

With the dozens upon dozens of Christmas and "winter" themed albums to choose from each year, Loreena McKennitt's 1987's seasonal gem, "To Drive A Cold Winter Away" is perhaps one of the most lovely Christmas albums I've ever heard. Recorded at Church Of Our Lady, Guelph, Annaghmakerrig, Ireland, and Glenstal Abbey, Ireland, this collection of eighteenth and nineteenth century traditional English, Scottish and Irish carols {and a few original compositions by Loreena herself}are handled so masterfully by the artist. I've never heard Loreena's voice as stong, pristine and clear as I do here. With the accordian and harp being the primary instruments {along with the tin whistle, viola and trubudour} there is absoulutely nothing upstaging Loreena's stunning vocals, which soud echoey, creating an intimate mood. One can almost imagine her in the middle of a great cathedral, strumming her harp, and candles lit all around her. The album begins with the an accordian solo and then the harp comes in... I get goosebumps every time I listen to that. The first song, "In Praise Of Christmas" is so hauntingly beautiful it brings tears to my eyes. The standout song on the album is "Snow" which is also featured on A Celtic Christmas {Windham Hill}. The song invokes such a peaceful, feeling of childlike wonderment and its beauty is nearly indescribable. The final song on "To Drive The Cold Winter Away" is "Let All That Are To Mirth Inclined" it begins with a single church bell and then Loreena's voice.... no other instruments, just her voice. Amazing. The song ends by her voice fading out and then the church bell comes in again. This album is perfect in every way, my only complaint is that I wish it were longer. I give "To Drive The Cold Winter Away" my highest reccomendation and my highest praises. This is a must for your music collection.

The Best of Holiday Music.......2004-12-20

The other day, I was in a bookstore and they were playing Christmas music. I wondered why I wasn't immediately annoyed, because I normally feel overrun by Christmas long before it gets here. Then I noticed it was "To Drive the Cold Winter Away". As soon as I got home, I pulled out the CD and gave it a good listen.

Loreena Mckennitt's vocals are as unique and lovely as always, and her rich interpretations of some timeless classics give one a true feeling of the holiday spirit: Being warm, while watching the cold outside; a sense of spirituality divorced from commercialism and last minute mall shopping, aggressive drivers and too many versions of Jingle Bells.

Though there has been no snow here this year, that's how I love to listen to this album best. Curled up in a chair with a cup of hot cider, wrapped in a blanket and watching the snow fall outside. This is an excellent album for people who don't enjoy the "typical" Christmas carol, but look for music to accompany the holiday season nonetheless. And it's just as enjoyable any other time of the year.

Beautiful, Moving, Haunting.......2004-12-17

In some ways, this is my favorite Loreena McKennitt CDs. It is the first album I pull out during the holiday season! Full of haunting and enchanting recordings, many either a capella or with minimal instrumental accompaniment, and with an ethereal quality that truly "feels" like a cold, snowy twilight. Plus, she eschews doing yet *another* rendition of popular carols, focusing on lesser known, but no less excellent, traditional tunes.

My personal favorite recordings include "The King," "Let Those Who Are To Mirth Inclined," and "In Praise of Christmas" (from which the album title is drawn).

Just wonderful.......2003-11-22

Most of the songs on this album are traditional 18th and 19th century Christmas songs, sparingly produced and backed by harp, viols, and accordion, and feature Ms. McKennitt's soaring, breathtaking vocals. I couldn't imagine a better voice to perform these songs. If you'd like a break from the hustle and commercialism of a 21st century Chrismas, this disc is perfect.
