The Book of Secrets
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
McKennitt's recordings always have the quality of a spiritual sojourn; her songs are those of a seeker, whether she's setting Yeats, Scripture, or her own words to her compositions. It's this that attracts people to her music, and The Book of Secrets is no exception, whether it's the lazy rhythms of "Marco Polo," the sober joy of "The Mummers' Dance," the poignancy of "Skellig" or "Dante's Prayer," or the drama of Alfred Noyes's "The Highwayman." "The Highwayman" is a particularly strong effort, especially in comparison to her earlier setting of "The Lady of Shalott"; McKennitt has become much more skilled at musical narrative. This is music that can be enjoyed on many levels, from McKennitt's growing skill as a composer to the deeper questions posed by her lyrics. --Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:
Oh, the Mystical Night Rides with Loreena!.......2007-07-09
This music is great for traveling far and wide. The music is both imaginatively and intellectually stimulating. This is an album that calms me, comforts me, and soothes the depths of my soul. Loreena is such a magnificent vocalist and the music that she creates I will never forget. The "Book of Secrets" was the first album of hers that I listened to and bought. I just so happened to stumble upon a copy in a public library and checked it out because I was intrigued by the neat cover art. Well, sweet fortune drew me to her, and ever since, she has been one of my favorite artists to listen to. I would rate her among the top five I have ever heard. I thank God from bringing her to me. One day, I will surely live to travel to see her live in concert. I must do it before I die!
Just what the other reviewers said..........2007-06-29
This is pure Loreena at her best, in my opinion. I've only listened to it twice since I received it, but I know I'll be playing it as much as time allows. Enjoy.
outstanding.......2007-05-27
timeless piece of music, i will enjoy it forever. You can never get tired of hearing it.
A new fan.......2007-05-14
This was the first album I heard by Loreena McKennitt and I loved it. Will buy more in the future!
Music like no other.......2007-04-19
What I really want to say about this remarkable artist, cannot be expressed in words. Its like trying to describe the taste of a perfect mango, you have to experience it - to KNOW.
I do know that listening to Loreena and her "Highwaymen" accompanists, is like entering into another world. Her's is the music and words of our ancestors, the deeds, loves, sorrows and joys of living on this planet in another time, in the celtic spirit, carried on the wings of divine music.
She is Canadian, but she sings these verses like she's a Celtic angel, sent to us to help us remember where we came from, and how far we've traveled. Buy this or any of her works if you yearn for an escape from the present, live in another time, in a place, when we were free and owed allegience to no king, only to the heartbeat of Nature, the rhythm of existance.
Last night I put track 8, Dante's prayer, on repeat, so I could stay in the trance it invokes for a long time. Do you know what its like to be truly moved by an artist? Moved to tears, to joy, to a state of emotional surrender? Do the same with track 3, Skellig. I swear, I could feel the rocks under my old sandels, and the weariness of the journey from the rocky shores of Ireland to the fields of Romanie, stopping along the way to hear the bells - who call all to mass.
This music will make you appreciate a good set of head phones again, like the Sony MDR7502's. Find the time to hear this music, its transforming.

Vocally magical.......2007-05-08
Just a wonderful CD. I love the tones of her voice and the emotion in her songs. Moving and hauntingly beautiful music. I love it!
Favourite.......2007-04-07
This is one of my favourite CDs and I never tire of listening to it. The Highwayman is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs that I have ever heard.
music from Soldier.......2007-03-25
I first heard this music sung on the movie Soldier, with Kurt Russell and fell in love with it. The music is haunting and beautiful and I'm definitely a solid fan of Loreen McKennitt now.
Beautiful and haunting music.......2007-01-25
First I have to say a huge THANK YOU to all the previous reviewers of this CD. I was looking for gregorian chant the other day which led somehow to reviews of Celtic music and then I came across the 440+ reviews of this magical woman's music. I thought that if one singer could garner so much praise and enthuisiasm, then there must be something special about her! I'd never heard of Loreena McKinnett or any of her music before last week when I ordered this CD, but I have not stopped listening to it since; I actually listened to the whole CD one morning three times in a row! I did not know what to expect when I heard the first note of the Prologue, but I was immediately hooked and transported to another world. I am a bit of dreamer and romantic so this music fits my mindset perfectly. It is soothing, haunting, imaginative and beautiful. I love all the influences that I hear in each song, but to me there is definitely an overall Celtic feel to the music. From some of the reviews I thought I would have to get over my wariness of Middle Eastern music which tends to sound the same to me, but the blend of Celtic and Middle Eastern works wonderfully. It's 10 years since this CD first came out and I'm only discovering it for the first time, but I have to say the music is timeless which, given the various themes in some of the songs, is fitting. I love all kinds of music - my tastes range from Kate Bush to Earth Wind & Fire and everything else in between - but Loreena's music is a welcome addition to my CD collection. She's opened me up to a whole new appreciation of sound and imagery. I look forward to seeing her PBS special in March and listening/experiencing more of her music.
McKennitt, Ken sing it !!!.......2007-01-16
Once again, I cannot say More. Her voice and all the members of her band and all the other musicians on this album are phenomenal !!!
The stories and the lyrics on the sleeve included with the disc are wonderful to read.
Love it !!!

very disappointing.......2005-08-02
Promo says recorded by "Big Movie Orchestra" but it sounds more like a couple of synthesizers. The "strings" are OK but anything on brass or wind sounds AWFUL. Some tracks are not even on pitch. Seller would not refund, either - adding insult to injury! Now it's a handsome coaster for my desk!

Wonderful introduction to Loreena McKnnet's work.......2007-04-04
I am just as intrigued by the copy as the by the evocative Celtic music.
The Secret Should Be Out on Loreena McKennitt.......2006-08-05
And that secret would be Loreena's beautiful voice and seemingly effortless singing on this album. This album has been her biggest commercial success, due to the song "Mummer's Dance" which hit the charts in 1997, but the other songs more than carry their own weight. Meticulous research of her songs and a knowledge of people and history aid immensely in Loreena obtaining the right feel for a song.
During the height of this album's popularity, Loreena's fiance died in a boating accident, leading her into mourning and away from music for years. I, for one, hope that her mourning has been resolved and more music is on the way, if possible. She's a major talent and deserves all of the accolades and musicial fame
It leads you to a magic word.......2006-06-09
The first time I heard Loreena's music I was with my best friend at the University, ten years ago, trying to escape from the burdens of the world. He gave me a copy of "The Visit" and I loved every song. I didn't hear from Loreena again until February 2001, when I came into a music store and, by instinct, I bought a copy of "Book of secrets". This fantastic piece of art transported me to a magic and enchanted place. It was like to be born again in some fantastic land lost between the memories of my childhood and the beginning of my adulthood as Loreena's crystal voice starts surrounding your soul in a soft and lovely atmosphere. "The Mummer's dance"-one of my favorite pieces-is strongly linked to the most important and clue moments of my life. Every time I feel in a crossroad I play this song, close my eyes and, immediately, everything comes back to its original place.

Listen.......2000-08-27
I wrote a series of 6 preludes that appear on this album. I was very impressed with Ms. Deguchi's abilities to play these tricky pieces. Prelude #4 in particular is very difficult. When I wrote the tempo for this piece, I nearly wrote it as a joke, thinking that it was extremely unlikely that I would ever hear a living pianist perform it at that tempo, but Ms. Deguichi pulled it off very well.
Obviously I'm going to tell you that my Piano Preludes are tasty, so I'll leave it at that, but the thing that makes this album a nice little number to add to your collection is the variety. Eight composers are represented (myself, Carol Barnett, Keith Carpenter, Matthew Davidson, Laurel Firant, Robert Fleisher, Charles Griffin, and Andrew Kinney). The scope of the line up includes student composers, University teachers, free lance musicians, and even a film composer. My personal favorite piece (that isn't written by a guy who's last name rhymes with John) is Robert Fleisher's Secrets. However, you'll have to take my word for it for the time being, that is of course until it arrives in the mail . . .

goooooooood album ¡¡¡¡ go for it ¡¡¡¡.......2005-03-07
Im a Christian and i've always wanted to listen a band like this, I used to listen to fates warning, Queensryche and dream theater, and bands of the 80's rock scene, so listening to book of secrets is a delightful experience, the vocals are incredible, the guitars are very good and the songs are melodic and catchy , and still they are heavy and strong. As a guitar player and a songwriter, ( I have my own band called CODIGO ETERNO ) I can recommend this album. My favorites are: do you dream of angels, its not over( until its over ) and when heaven calls your name, but all the album is excellent, and very hard to find. I Have a copy signed by LANCE KING, and I consider myself very lucky, jeje, its a hard to find cd. BUY IT ¡¡¡ in years will be considered a classic of progressive metal.
Progressive Metal With AOR Influence.......2000-08-10
Britain isn't the first place you associate with progessive metal (especially well played stuff !!!), but B.O.P. have gone some way to re-adressing that on this album.
This is a concept album, although don't let that frighten you, because with the exception of a few very short narrative vocal passages you'd be none the wiser.
Musically the band is closer to Queensryche than Dream Theater and does have a slight AOR hint - it does sound pretty radio friendly at times! The songs are generally pretty good ('Walking on..' is an absolute blinder) and are competently performed, but don't expect lots of complicated instrumental passages and terrifying guitar licks.
Arguably the strongest part of this album is the Lance King's vocals which are beautifully melodic and smooth and are so good he could almost sing for the wonderful Shadow Gallery. Combine this with a rock solid production and you're pretty much up there with the best of them.
However, there's something about this album which means it rarely leaves my CD rack for the player - and to be honest I think it's those commercial keyboards melodies where Petrucci's staccato riffing should be.
Being British myself I'd love to give this 5 stars, but there are so many other progressive metal bands out there who I would much rather listen to. If you're fed up with the complexity and intensity of some of the modern progressive bands then you might want to give this album a listen because it's not bad - but just not quite this Brit's cup of tea!
