Live In Paris & Toronto [Live]
Editorial Reviews

Loreena McKennitt's two-CD set, plucked from performances in Paris and Toronto, documents the modern-day troubadour's live dimension, luxuriously unraveling her talents on harp, accordian, and piano like a finely woven tapestry. Lovers of The Book of Secrets, The Mask and Mirror, and her other enchanting albums will be pleased by this virtuoso performance and crisp recording of many favorite songs including "The Mummers' Dance" and "Bonny Portmore." McKennitt's voice is in finely polished form here--no hints of hoarse tour fatigue whatsoever. "Marco Polo," a delicious, trancelike jam on The Book of Secrets, rushes a bit too quickly, lacking the expansive, improvised groove that could've richly garnished this tasty track. But this is a small bit of tarnish on the silver beauty of this magnificent collection, brought to life by McKennitt's ensemble of violin, cello, hurdy-gurdy, bass, and percussion that all interlock lovingly with McKennitt's angelic voice. And what makes this gem even more beautifully poignant is its dedication to McKennitt's fiancé, who died in July, 1998, in a boating accident. Proceeds from album sales will go to his memorial fund dedicated to water search and rescue. If in 1999 we weren't fortunate enough to indulge in new material from this special artist, we at least have a taste of her extraordinary music to savor in a new, golden light. --Karen Karleski

Recorded at the historic Olympia Theatre in Paris in November 2001, this is Diana Krall's first live album. Backed by her quicksilver combo of bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton, and guitarist John Pisano (on some tracks), Krall's jazz heritage comes through loud and clear on this program of standards, ballads, and bossa novas. On Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Here with You," Bob Dorough's "Devil May Care," and Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon," Krall's snappy, postbop piano playing shows off her debt to Nat "King" Cole and Jimmy Rowles. Her cool contralto vocals are illuminated by the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, under the direction of Alan Broadbent, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Claus Ogerman. Krall's deep take on Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" is a great choice for an encore, and the CD concludes with Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" (a studio track from a film called The Guru), with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker and bassist Christian McBride. This collection only hints at what Diana Krall has to offer in the future.--Eugene Holley Jr.

Diana Krall in Top Form, Classic.......2007-08-04
Dear John: Letters From a Fan in New York City: An Interactive Book Diana Krall, you got me through my ups and downs with style. This is her best CD, in my opinion. I just recently saw her live in concert, and most of the songs (but not all) were in the concert. This is quintessential Diana Krall. A must-have CD for all her fans. Trust me.
If they let me give ten stars................2007-07-30
....this one would get them. I've written a couple of other five star reviews of Diana's records, and talked about the great material, and beautifully seductive voice. I even discussed the [limited] commercial value of sexy album jackets. It's all true.....
....but this trumps it. Diana in the studio is fabulous, but Diana live, connecting with the audience and her band, goes way beyond that. You can feel the magic. Some singers live don't measure up [no names]. Others, like our dear Carly Simon, have to overcome massive stage fright. [Carly has only one live album, great as it is]... I have no idea how much stage fright Diana has [and stage fright is real; been there, done that. I'm lucky that I actually enjoy the feeling]. Some fortunate singers are actually improved by a real audience. Whatever Diana's feelings, she gives the audience [and us] her all. I've not heard Diana in person, but on this recording we can get the electricity of a special experience.
Diana Krall is a treasure in earthen vessel....a beautiful girl, with a voice for the ages. If you're not familiar with her music, I'm sorry. If you only know her studio recordings, you've GOT to hear this.
Diana Krall at her best.......2007-06-20
Hoppin', jazzy live performance -- my favorite Diana Krall CD.
you know that.......2007-04-12
shush shuh shuh shuh sound that new cordoroy pants make? Well that's what Krall sounds like wiht her sibilant "s". Is she singing through false teeth?
Very Enjoyable and that's all that matters..........2007-02-24
For those reviewers trying to compare Diana Krall to people like Sarah Vaughn... forget it!!! She's not Vladamir Horowitz or the Pope either!!! To give her a low rating based on that is absurd.
This is a very very good Jazz band and Diana Krall swings. She plays well and she does an incredible amount with the voice that the maker gave here. The album is very enjoyable to me and it's a good place to start if you want to hear Diana Krall.
Is she great? That question is so subjective and who cares anyway. One reviewer suggested that calling her great was disrespectful to the great Jazz singers. Popular singers like Diana bring attention to Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn and Sinatra etc... People start with Diana and move backward from there... 5 stars from this reviewer!!!

As She Proves Again....LOREENA RULES!!!!!.......2007-06-18
OK, Folks; this time, very short and sweet. Of all the "live" albums that I have purchased in the past, say 10 years, this IS IT! Truly a knockout, spellbinding set from this wonderful singer/songwriter/musician.
None can touch her in the world of "Celtic", or "New Age", etc.!
Recorded in two venues, one in Paris, and one in Canada, then edited together into a seamlessly beautiful performance. Don't just take my word for it, check out a few more of the reviews here, Then, go out and get this album, and ENJOY! ~operabruin
It's a live album, okay we get it.......2007-02-22
Musically, the recording is beautiful in every way except the long audience applause before and after every selection breaks the spell. Why did the producer feel that he had to put the audience applause on the recording? Is this somehow proof that it is indeed a live recording?
Ethereal.......2005-09-05
With a voice that can only be described as unworldly and ethereal, Loreena Mckennitt, with vocal and harp alike lifts the soul and offers a rare moment of beauty. Her interpretations of classic ballads marks this as an important album and indeed listening to it, I've often felt my heart skip a beat. That such a great talent has gone so long without producing a new album remains a loss for all music lovers, but at least we can take solace in this marvelous work.
Truly a must have.
"Let your indulgence set me free.".......2005-06-05
This is a wonderful album on many reasons. Like most McKennitt fans I held off from buying it because I already had the songs on other CDs. This first CD is really a complete performance of The Book of Secrets, and the second is a carefully chosen selection from The Visit and The Mask and The Mirror (plus a hidden bit, which as you will see shortly could probably be considered a lament and a memory). By and large McKennitt stays very true to the original recordings. Tempo's are generally slightly slower, although there are exceptions like The Highwayman, which is a full minute faster here.
There are subtle differences everywhere in phrasing and the inner working of her group. In a piece like The Mummer's Dance, for instance, you become much more aware of the workings on the strings. And songs like The Lady of Shallot and Dante's Prayer reach a level that can only be described as perfection. Live performance is the acid test of a musician's powers, and everyone in the group, from the likes of Brian Hughes and Hugh Marsh to La McKennitt herself, achieves everything that could be desired.
This was McKennitt's last album, put together in 1999. Suddenly a brilliant and fertile career came to a halt, with nothing about why every being said. The sole clue to the hiatus is two lines in the album folder dedicating the album to the memory of Ronald Douglas Rees and mentioning the Cook-Rees Memorial Fund For Water Search And Safety. Ronald Rees was Lorena McKennitt's fiancé and he died unexpectedly while she was wrapping up this album. For some time she was completely silent, but has gradually increased her performances again. Now a visit to her website reveals that another album is in progress. Good for us, and very good for Loreena as well.
If for no other reason than that on two CDs you have many of McKennitt's songs done beautifully you should by this. For the newcomer, I can't imagine a better introduction to the work of a woman who is scholar, minstrel, and beauty. For the fan it is a reward for the affection of a singer/songwriter who has stayed steadily true to her vision of what should be, rather than fall to the lure of pop culture.
Dreaming wide awake ..........2005-04-08
Loreena McKennitt's music -- and her otherworldly voice -- are a rare gift. Surely her music is "Celtic", but so many other influences are incorporated here -- and the amazing thing is how well they mesh. I've never been lucky enough to catch any of her live performances, but this 2-CD set captures what the atmosphere must be like at one of her concerts: a dreaming, oceanic, passionate, and haunting (yes, I have to use that word!) few hours spent in the company of a phenomenally talented artist and her traveling band, completely simpatico with her musical sensibilities. Highly recommended. If the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood had a soundtrack, Loreena McKenitt's music would surely be on it.

Customer Reviews:
I love Seal!.......2007-06-26
I first fell in love with Seal years ago when I was in a mall and a store was playing Whirlpool on its muzak. I asked the guy who was that singing and he had to do some investigating for me. When he told me it was Seal, I immediately went to buy his CD. I was hooked! This live set by Seal is truly a joy to listen to. His vocal quality is unique, and very easy to listen to. I would also recommend any of his albums, especially his acoustic recordings. He is one of the most underrated vocalists out there today.
Desert Island Stuff.......2007-02-18
Seal is one of those pleasantly rare musical artists who defies description by not having a genre. This combo release of CD and DVD is such a value and showcases just what a musical treasure Seal is. The Parisian audience stunned me on the DVD by remaining absolutely quiet during the performance of "Don't Cry". The one thing that has always escaped my understanding is lack of universal appeal of his work. So many less-talented singers who perform other's work are more popular, but their voices are not the instrument that Seal's is. He performs his own songs with mature, thoughtful lyrics and also musically interesting pieces he has written or co-written. Seal fans, this is a Desert Island piece for you, but the DVD with the DTS® soundtrack almost beats being at a concert.
Sweet as a kiss from a rose.......2007-02-04
In Paris in 2004, Seal performed his first ever live concerts. The aptly-titled LIVE IN PARIS is a recording of one of those concerts. On LIVE IN PARIS, Seal performs most of his hits, including "Crazy", "Kiss from a Rose", "Love's Divine", and "Future Love Paradise". Seal's studio recordings are largely synthesized, so it's very interesting to hear him perform these songs live with actual musicians (and a talented bunch of musicians at that). The songs have a different sound to them, but the same wonderful feeling. There's a surprising amount of energy in this recording, both from the performers and the exuberant audience (which is remarkably courteous and remains silent through the actual songs, applauding wildly during the intervals between the songs). The songs are as charming as ever, and the recording as a whole is so sweet that it feels much like I'd imagine a kiss from a rose would feel.
There is more than just the CD recording in this package, though - it also includes a marvelous DVD recording of the concert that includes songs not on the CD. The DVD is very well-filmed, and with the surround mix it really feels like you're there at the concert with Seal. All in all, it's a delectable package and a great way to keep the hungry fan at bay while Seal records his next album.
WITHOUT PEER.......2006-05-14
It seems like only yesterday that Seal swept into the scene with his self titled debut. This is probably his best release yet - a seamless DVD and Cd of great music. If you're new to Seal - it's a great place to start. If you're a fan - the other reviews say it all. A worthy release.
Finally, a live concert! And a great package deal, too........2006-01-11
I just received this for Christmas and had to come "in here" to see what others think of it. I have never written a review here before, but want to share my thoughts on this one.
I absolutely love it, like others are saying - very soulful performance, and great arrangements of the songs that I love so much, too. I'm surprised that the little intricacies and subtleties that make his studio work so rich are here - sounds much better than I expected from a live performance. I also applaud his choice to release a show done in a country where the audience has respect enough for the performers to BE QUIET DURING THE SONGS, except when appropriate; I swear you could hear a pin drop in moments of this show, very refreshing! I have been to many concerts in my 40 years (including 2 with Seal!) and love the experience, but have just about had enough of the rudeness of others while there . . . sorry for the tangent . . . Anyway, I have been a big fan of Seal's since the first time hearing "Crazy" in 1991, and so, was anxious to hear what blend of songs he would contribute here. Great selection, with my only disappointment being the absence of "Violet," from his first album - one of my personal favorites (I understand the show did have to end sometime, though).
Since you're reading this, you obviously have a bit of interest in this release, and Seal, and I don't see how you could possibly be dissapointed! Great CD/DVD value! Enjoy.

Garland en Francais.......2007-02-05
When it comes to the recordings of Judy Garland live in concert, this one is right up there. In 1960, Garland had a banner-year; vocally she was in the best shape she had ever been in. The previous year saw Garland struck down with a life-threatening strain of hepatitis, and doctors predicted the worst for her. Life as a permanent semi-invalid became the impetus for Garland to rest, recover, and return better than ever. She recorded her sixth album for Capitol ("That's Entertainment!"), and then resumed her concert career.
To help celebrate her miraculous return to health, Garland teamed with musical director Norrie Paramor on a new concert act, especially-designed for her European fans.
Instead of opening with Garland's trademark Overture, a new jazz arrangement from Paramor was used. Right from the outset, Garland wanted this performance to reek of a distinct European sophistication.
While the tunestack features all of Garland's greatest pieces, she inserted a lovely medley of "April in Paris/I Love Paris" for this event, which adds a nice touch. Vocally, Garland is on form and clearly having a ball. The recording is crisp and clean. A good addition to your Garland collection.

A Great Companion for Collector's.......2006-07-10
When it comes to Judy Garland's greatest concert performances and materials extracted for them, there are three musts for any serious collector. The first and best in may opinion is the Carnegie Hall performance, second is the Amsterdam performance, and third is this CD of the Paris performance. Some might place the Paris performance second because of the superior sound quality, but I place it third only because of the brevity of numbers selected by the producers.
Each of these performances has a unique quality of their own, like all live performances. This CD of the Paris performance gives the listener a wonderful sample of how Judy provided such a broad of range of colors and polishes for her old standards that gave them a novelty that doesn't grow old.

Album Description
This stellar 20 bit remastered double CD release includes all of the songs performed by Wes Montgomery's quartet, at the Paris' Theatre des Champs Elysees on March 27, 1965. It is arguably the best live recording of Wes Montgomery and the sound quality is excellent. Accompanied by the outstanding pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Arthur Harper, drummer Jimmy Lovelace and special guest, tenor saxophone virtuoso Johnny Griffin, this release is a testimony to the magic of Wes Montgomery's guitar playing, and his ability to innovate and excel in a live performance setting. Definitive Records. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
Great Live CD.......2005-11-10
I was skeptical at first. If the recording is so great, why hasn't it come out before now? But I bought the cd anyway and was pleasantly surprised. I don't know if it is better than "Live at the Half Note" or "Full House," but it is definitely on the same level as those two cd's. And if you consider that Wes' best playing seems to be what he does live, it is a must have for any jazz guitar fan.
Didn't hear it, don't need to........2005-09-29
I'm a professional jazz guitar player and I have almost everything by Wes, as I should since he is the one and only toff player in jazz guitar. I don't have this one CD, but I don't even need to. I know that what Wes is doing here is astonishing, simple, real, honest and overwhelming, as is every single note he has ever played. The stars given by every one here shows I can't be wrong. As a study I have taken solos by Wes and the most impressive thing is not the technical complexities at all - Wes is rather simple - but how his mind must have worked, and this you can feel when playing along with him. His mind is always one or two bars ahead, so the "simple" becomes misteriously impossible and this is the trace of the genius; once you hear it you go "my god, this is so simple, how didn't I think of this before?" It's like Beethoven's 9th, so simple, so obvious and so beautiful. This man represents the spirit of jazz in the most loving way and this is why I arrogantly wrote this review of a CD I never heard.
Simply Marvelous !!!.......2005-06-12
this is as good as it gets for Wes Montgomery's live playing- a very uptempo night of playing with lotsa chops... i don't like the actual recorded sound of the recording as much as "Smokin' at the Half Note"- seems like there is more treble in Wes' amp settings than i am used to or maybe it was just the settings of the tape recorder 0r P.A. board... still, this is a ferocious night of Wes' playing with more of a Bebop feel than Swing in the style- GRRREAT JAZZ !!! a wonder-full compliment to "Smokin' at the Half Note" which has a warmer, softer vibe in that club concert... if you love Wes- you gotta hear this recording !!!
Essential for guitarists and Wes completists only........2005-03-02
Wes is admittedly more "aggressive" in his playing on this occasion, partly due to his band mates and the nature and length of the program. Unlike the grooving, always "in the pocket," rhythm section of "Smokin' at the Half Note" (Kelly, Chambers, Cobb), the Harold Mabern-led rhythm section gives the music a forward edge, or emotive quality, suggestive of Coltrane and McCoy. The result is often music based on tension and release rather than melodic inventiveness--leading to some purely "physical" playing and grandstanding on the parts of Mabern and tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin (the two ballads opening the second disk are my favorite moments of the concert).
The audio is acceptable--and thankfully the balance favors Wes' guitar, which sounds as "fat" and consistent as ever. But I suspect this recording won't wear as well with me and other non-guitarists as his meetings with Wynton Kelley, Milt Jackson, and Jimmy Smith, not to mention the classic Riverside studio albums. If there were more of Wes on record, I'd give this one 4 stars. Pick it up only if you have "Smokin'," "Full House," and "The Incredible Artistry."
Wes turned it out.......2004-11-14
got to hear this whole set&was feeling it from start to end. Wes&His Band knocked it out.I was already diging His Live One Smoking at the Half Note but this One is even more tighter if you can beleive that.Wes with His Signature playing&Styling just moves you.strogn arrangements.some of His Albums back in the day didn't always Highlight him properly as this Set does so well.enjoy!!!

At last..........2007-04-09
I owned this on a cassette and played the hell out of it but couldn't get a Cd version until recently. This may be the finest live reggae period and that includes marley and tosh. This is a full company of musicians playing more complex arraignments. Three piece brass combo and all the percussionists playing hypnotic reggae at it's best.
The drummer here is a guy i had never heard of and he is just sick! Better than sly dunbar. He drives a riddim section that is superb and burning spear is the master of ceremony with his perfect timing and passion. the sound is as clear and pure as any live album you ever heard.
The pulsating sounds will energize you and make you want to start chucking! If not then you don't have a pulse..
Incredible production.......2005-08-06
I first owned this on casette in 1990. It was the first raggae I ever owned, and it jams! I was first stuck by the crisp and clear production. On the CD it's even better. You can pick out each individual instrument and vocal. Being a guitarist, I was amazed by the inventiveness of the playing.
The songs themselves are longer and more complex than any raggae I've heard before or since. You will groove and sing along all day and night. Don't be surprised if you find yourself humming the songs the next day without realizing that you're doing it.

Live in Paris captures Frank Sinatra in 1962, circa "Come Fly with Me," smack in the middle of his shift from swinging cock-of-the-walk to schmaltzy, cocky pig. So he'll bring tears to your eyes with the dignity and gentle reverence he pours into "Ol' Man River," then leave you cursing when he tags it with a smarmy "That's a song about Sammy Davis' people." Live in Paris is loaded with similar groaners, but the disc also includes cooking, intimate versions of "My Funny Valentine," "In The Still Of The Night," "One For My Baby" and a half dozen more that immediately render all future versions second rate. --David Cantwell
Customer Reviews:
The Best Sinatra Live Album, But Poor Sound Quality..........2007-07-01
Foe the love of God, why hasn't someone remastered this album?? This is possibly the best Sinatra performance ever captured, with Frank singing with a small, intimate sextet. He sings some brilliant, obscure songs (Moonlight In Vermont), but the sound quality is so poor that i cannot listen to this recording on my High Fidelity system. This CD has been relegated to 'car CD only' status for me.
Please, someone give the masters to Rudy Van Gelder and let him work his magic. It's a disgrace that the Sinatra family hasn't remastered what is possibly Sinatra's finest performance ever recorded.
A Great Live Album. Sinatra At His Peak........2007-06-29
The early 1960s' were a period of change for Frank Sinatra. He had ended his hugely usccessful stint at Capitol Records for his own label, Reprise. He was nearing 50, and his record sales were slowing.
Frank also become active in charity affairs, and in 1962, he embarked on a tour to raise money for his favorite organizations. This included a stop in Paris with his small 6 - piece band, and the show has thankfully survived on tape.
Now, I do agree that unless you have a truly great sound system, the sound quality is disappointing. But if you can overlook that, then this is one of Frank's best live recordings.
Ol' Blue Eyes in top form here, as he swings through some of his most beloved classics, such as "I've Got You Under My Skin", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "Chicago", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Nancy", and "Come Fly With Me", all with signature Frank style and swag. He visits some lesser known tunes as well, such as "At Long Last Love", "My Funny Valentine", and a lovely "Ol' Man River" among others.
Frank's humor and energy is intact, and his six-piece backing group is excellent. Despite sound quality issues, this is a worthy addition to your Sinatra collection.
The onion soup is great here, but don't eat it before you have to sing, it's murder........2007-01-28
This concert was recorded during Frank Sinatra's tour of world capitals in 1962 to raise money for children's charities. Sinatra was accompanied by a six man band, which was one of the smallest groups he ever worked with. Of course, the smaller group necessitated simpler arrangements of the songs, but they still work pretty well. Sinatra is in good voice, but he seems to run out breath a few times. Could it have been something he ate? Anyway, this is an enjoyable concert of Sinatra singing some of his most popular songs. Frank's fans will enjoy it.
Whatever happened to those old jokes? .......2006-08-28
(4.5/5 stars) This 1962 concert by Sinatra and a sextet in Paris is one to own due to some outstanding performances of some fantastic songs. From the embittered man hoping for an ex-lover's timely demise on "Goody, Goody" to the down-trodden slave of "Ol' Man River," Sinatra has it covered. (If you don't think a wealthy, forty-something white man can make "Ol' Man River" poignant and beautiful, listen to this) Some of these songs, such as "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "I Get A Kick Out of You," are indelibly linked with the man. However, his voice is in such peak form and the accompaniment is so strong you will definitely want the performances on this CD. "Night and Day" alone is worth the price! The CD is not without its faults, however. Even though the sound quality is probably just about average for concert recordings in France at the time, it does detract a little from the overall experience. Also, his voice gives out on him at times, which is something he jokingly attributes to sleeping in the park. While that remark is innocuous enough, there are other times it is clear he did not transition well to a world of gender equality and civil rights. In addition to his comment about "Ol' Man River" being about Sammy Davis, Jr.'s people, there is his translation of "cherchez la femme" as "Why don't you share the broad with me?" "Whatever happened to those old jokes?" he asks after springing a zinger on the audience. Indeed.
He was there.......2006-01-18
Jonathan Schwartz, in his book "All In Good Time: A Memoir," writes about first meeting Sinatra at this performance and the party afterward. It's a terrific book throughout and includes many first-hand stories about Sinatra, including how he tried to get Schwartz fired from New York radio after he criticized the "future" songs on Sinatra's triology album. A must-read for Frankophiles.

Album Description
"Enrico Pieranunzi is a force to be reckond with both as a musician and coposer...[giving] new listeners a further display of the brilliant capabilities he has honed over the many years in Italy and Europe with numerous projects and musicians." -ALL ABOUT JAZZ
Very intimate live recording with pianist Enrico Pieranunzi (who worked with Chet Baker, Art Farmer and Lee Konitz); drummer André Ceccarelli (who performed with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Brad Mehldau and Sting); and bassist Hein van de Geyn (who recorded with Chet Baker, Bobby Watson and many more).
Customer Reviews:
Few groups can produce this much high energy.......2006-04-16
Pieranunzi's group just packs the most in the least amount of time with an efficiency that leaves me breathless. Damn, they're good. No, over the edge good! May they be together and play and make music like this for a very long time. The album is non-stop, meaning one tune flows like a bubbling mountain stream into another leaving the listener to realize with surprise we're in new territory. New territory indeed. This recording is getting a lot of ear time.
All the elements.......2006-03-18
This EP date has humor, adventure and beauty. What more do you want?
Serious Jazz.......2006-01-25
One of last year's Top 20 was Enrico Pieranunzi's trio album with Charlie Haden and Paul Motian titled "Special Encounter." It was published by CAM Jazz, a label that has built a reputation for producing stellar music. Challenge Records has a comparable reputation; and if this album can hang on for 11 months, it's a contender for this year's list.
Pieranunzi is joined by bassist Hein van de Geyn and drummer Andre Ceccarelli for 14 tracks recorded over three days in 2001. The band has recorded as a trio before, and Van de Geyn and Ceccarelli spent years working back-up together for Dee Dee Bridgewater. Here, they blend like coffee. European musicians are often cheaply labeled "Impressionistic"; but in this case, the term's a bullseye. Often they barely hint at the original melody, and only briefly. To put it another way: this is one of those albums you buy for the music, not the songs.
Piano, bass, and drums is the most ubiquitous configuration in jazz; and the truth is, very few of them have a unique sound. This one does. "Live in Paris" isn't a conventional blowing session with constant 4/4 swing pushing through alternating heads and solos. There's far more improvisation with regard to form, and far more interaction than soloist against accompaniment. The closest parallel might be the cliche, Bill Evans's trio, or else maybe Brad Mehldau's Vanguard recordings -- except that I think these guys leave a lot more space.
The shortest tune is "What Is This Thing Called Love," at 4:33; most of the tracks clock between six and ten minutes apiece. This is exactly what I want from a live CD, because it's what I love in a concert: to hear the band stretch out, to hear them really dig into a tune and find something different from what they played the night before. This isn't every other piano album, but it is a perfect example of a live CD that brings you the experience of sitting in a club.

Best Concert in ANY language.......2007-05-13
This is an amazingly well done concert in every respect. I have never seen a concert DVD that has as much quality in EVERY area. Laura Pausini is amazing, and she is supported by a dynamite band, backup singers, great video/audio work, and a audience that is INTO the performance (too bad the one guy with the air horn had to ruin it). Literally, I do not understand 90% of the lyrics, but this performance is musically and technically riveting from beginning to end. I can't keep myself from playing it once or twice a week.
Excellent!!!!!!!.......2007-02-22
Laura Pausini is one of the best POP singers going, She sings well in Italian, English and Spanish. She has one of those voices that you just fall in love with. This live CD, Live in Paris 05 is cooking, it is a greatest hits live basically and you will definitely enjoy it. Vivimi, Se Fue, Tra Te E Il Mare, Surrender, E Retiorno Di Te, and La Cose Che Vivi are all excellent, well every song is excellent. This is a must have for Laura fans and I would recommend it anyone.
Probably the best concert in any language in the last 5 years .......2007-01-07
Spectacular voice, great set. This is one of those finds you go into with low expectations and get totally blown away by.
CD only in the US but the dvd is available at the euro amazon sites. NTSC format but region 2 so you will need a region free dvd player to watch it. If I didn't already have one I would buy one just to be able to watch it.
Sexiest woman on the planet. It's not the body, it's not the face, it's the hands. If you have a chance to watch the concert you will know what I mean. Never considered hands to be erotic but I have been converted.
Simply Excellent!.......2006-10-24
This defenitly is a must to have for sure. I got the special edition with a DVD. Totally recommended. You can fall in love of her voice since the first song. She's so professional! I can't wait she came to my town.

Listening to the high-energy, florid runs, quirky twists, and trademark whines that tattoo "Bouncin' with Bud," the opening track of Whisper Not, it's hard to believe that Keith Jarrett was still in the throes of chronic fatigue syndrome when his trio recorded this date in Paris in July 1999. This isn't the Keith Jarrett of moody ruminations we heard on his solo CD The Melody at Night, with You, released in the fall of 1999. Whisper Not is closer to the Jarrett who launched the Standards Trio with drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Gary Peacock in 1983. The trio is still mining the songs of their youth, resurrecting "Poinciana," a signature song of Ahmad Jamal, an early Jarrett influence, and paying tribute to the bop masters with a rollicking take on Dizzy Gillespie's "Groovin' High" and a sophisticated excursion into Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight." The interplay between these three musicians has never been higher, operating at a level beyond intuition, playing inside each other's heads. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
Prime Cuts!.......2007-05-20
Paying tribute to a host of great pianist influences, Jarrett performs over a dozen pieces that are either written by or associated with such jazz titans as Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, George Shearing, Ahmed Jamal, and even an Earl "Fatha" Hines tinged intro to Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams.
Keith stays on the mark throughout, with the possible exception of Round Midnight sounding a bit overly intellectual and emotionally detached. That being said, the majority of the selections sparkle with his lively and often inspired approach to time-honored classics. Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette consistently provide their usual reliable support.
For those who prefer Jarrett's straight ahead approach over his more modal meanderings, it doesn't get any better than these two live cookin' sets recorded in Paris, 1999.
Joyful.......2007-05-06
Why do ECM keep releasing Standards Trio albums? I can't afford to buy them all, its just not fair.
This is another absolutely blinding (double) CD. The track that caught my attention immediately was "What is thing called love". I don't how many versions of this tune I have by Jazz musicians but it must be dozens. Well heres another way of playing the song. A great solo Piano intro and then Keith just flys into the tune with stream of brilliant inventions.
The rest of the album maintains an equally high standard. A swinging version of "Bouncing with Bud" and a beautiful version of "Chelsea Bridge" are highlights from disc 1. Having said that I love the version of "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams" on disc 1 where Keith harks back to pre-bop era with a version that in its solo Piano intro is almost stride and continues that feel even if there isn't the ooom-pah left-hand all the time.
The total playing time is 1 hour 53 mins over the 2 discs. I've never heard a bad 'Standards Trio' album, but this is one of the very best.
This album is fantastic.......2007-03-07
A Keith Jarrett "must have" in my humble opinion. Similar to Jarrett's recordings at the Blue Note, but a little more refined... which is not to say it's better or worse. The Blue Note recordings have more flare but this cd has more style. All the tracks are fantastic, but my absolute favorites are:
Bouncin' With Bud, Whisper Not, Groovin' High, Chelsea Bridge (haunting melody!), What Is This Thing Called Love, and Poinciana (my #1 favorite).
The recording of "When I Fall In Love" on this album is not as good as the one on the Blue Note recordings (incredible recording, how could you top it?). Of course we're not free from Jarrett's grunts, but that's not a big deal anyway :P Altogether fantastic album.
Live and alive and swinging.......2004-09-05
Mr Jarrett is such a master, as are the bassist and drummer, that the regular listener has to put in context this offering, recorded live in Paris. How do we rate it against the magisterial LIVE AT THE BLUE NOTE? That said, this is a wonderful example of the joy the trio has at making music and seems to me to be a tribute to the greats of the piano, such as Ahmad Jamal, Billy Strayhorn, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Art Tatum, George Shearing. I was like others especially struck by the beautiful rendition of POINCIANA which Mr Jamal I'm sure would have enjoyed.
A special record for piano music lovers. Not to be missed.
EMC Records and sound quality.......2004-06-30
The music is wonderful but the recording quality is extremely poor(which is usually the case with EMC CD's).
