Product Description
The San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble (SAVAE) invites people from different faiths to celebrate their various religious roots with the gift of song. The Ancient Echoes CD features recreations of music from the time of Jesus and Jerusalem's Second Temple, which makes it the perfect gift for people of all denominations. Composed after years of intense study, Ancient Echoes draws from Jewish and Christian sources and Islamic influences to create a collection of spiritual and emotive choral and instrumental pieces.

SAVAE takes a landmark step toward recreating ancient music of the Holy Land - including original prayers of Jesus, sung in his native Aramaic language, sacred Levitical music from Jerusalem's Second Temple, and Essene chant from the Dead Sea Scrolls. A vibrant culture that was enriched by contact with distant lands connected along caravan routes is recaptured here, as SAVAE's voices ring out above the driving pulse of Middle Eastern rhythms to harmonize with ancient instruments. In this musical remembrance, Judaic and Christian scripture offer the listener renewed inspiration.

4 out of 5 stars A Rare Find!.......2007-05-07

I have searched all over (even in the Holy Land) for a rendition of ancient Middle Eastern music, and I think I have finally found exactly what I was looking for. The melodies are haunting and inspiring and seem to be authentic. I plan to use this music for personal reflection time as well as for presentations about the Bible - both Old and New Testaments. I heartily recommend this CD.

I decided I don't enjoy this type of music.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-11-10

Although it may lack authenticity on some levels, yet I have to say I enjoy the music, and my 5th/6th music history class REALLY enjoyed it. It does give them a taste of music from another time, and help them realize that 21st century praise and worship music is not all there is.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful - Joyously inspiring - Amazingly authentic.......2006-03-12

I've been doing research on life in Biblical times, particularly the time of Christ, and came across a review of this CD on the web. I was skeptical that it could live up to the praise in the review, but ordered anyway. As a musician, I was impressed with the authentic use of period instruments and how well the music captures the culture and time. As a writer, I was inspired to continue researching the men and women who spoke these languages and heard this music. And finally, I was amazed at the beauty of the music and how well the composers have captured the text. If you love scripture, world music, or Jewish history you will love SAVAE's Ancient Echoes.

1 out of 5 stars YUCK! if you're looking for REAL Jewish music this is NOT it........2006-03-11

This is a vocal arts ensemble's interpretation of Jewish traditional music. It is NOT the traditional music of the the time of Jesus or Jerusalem's temple. It doesn't sound authentic or real at all so if that is what you were looking for, like I was, you will be disappointed.

The male singers do a better job of using traditional vocal styles to sing but the female singers just cannot seem to shed their operatic voices and it completely ruins the effect of the song. Jewish singers use a certain style of voice that gives the music that unique sound. You simply cannot sing it in operatic or choral style and have it sound at all good.

It isn't Jewish music but if you want to listen to some amazing ethnic music try Savina Yannatou's Mediterranea for some traditional mediterranean music that is so good it will give you goosebumps.
