a must have for msg fans.......2007-05-27
this is probably michael schenkers finest work outside of ufo.the album is tight, from the first track to the last, including the bonus tracks.michaels choise of backing musicians, couldnt have been better.the vocalist, is pretty good, w/ a strong classic rock sound. the bassist/drummer are two of the best i've ever heard or had the pleasure to see perform.barry sparks is amazing on his 6 string bass.and shane gallass, the drummer, reproduces simon phillips work ( bonus track into the arena)flawlessly, a near impossible task.this work includes an insturmental titled "essence" which was an instant schenker classic, this song alone is worth what you'll pay for the entire album.and as always mr. schenker does not disappoint. he was at the top of his game when this was recorded, he was apparently in a good place in life when he wrote this work, and it shows. his sound is fresh and he was probably inspired by the caliber of the talent in this recording.A MUST HAVE !!!!
mixed.......2006-11-16
This has better songs and a better band than some of Schenker's other albums, but the songs are starting to wear on me. Compared to those "SAHB reunion" versions of MSG, the band is tighter and stronger, and the singer is decent. In fact, he's quite good, but he has an 80's-ish way of turning all the songs into anthems that gets old after a while. Schenker himself, as always, is tremendous. There's nothing as amazing as "Red Sky" or "But I Want More" on here, but there's nothing embarassing like the Macaulay Culkin project- it's really one of Schenker's more consistent albums.
The pinnacle of Michael Schenker.......2005-08-16
This is not only some of Michael Schenker's finest playing, it is without question the best band I have ever heard him play with, and I've heard most of his works. The Vocalist is absolutely amazing as is the drummer. If you like Schenker this CD is essential.
MSG's best?.......2004-01-13
This is the best MSG album since the early 80's. Not only is the playing astounding and the production superb, the songs on this disk have stood the test of time. Much superior to Michael's latest MSG (whoever that is) offerings. Check out also "The Michael Schenker Story Live" to hear this lineup record MSG's best live album.
Good old Schenker.......2003-09-26
If you like the first two Schenker solo albums, you'll like this one. Schenker's writing style (composing riffs, and forcing the vocalist to wrestle a coherent melody and song out of them) doesn't get in the way of the song composition. It is still apparent that he assembles songs this way, but it is much more smooth on this album. And finally, a good singer!
The guitar playing is inspiring, too. I just wish he's actually want to compose a song with a meaning or lyric in mind. Riffs alone aren't impressive.
This one is a keeper, however.

After UFO reunion, Michael Schenker comes back ACES!.......1998-12-23
After an outstanding effort with the reunited UFO, Micheal came back and totally surprised me with a super cd. Joining again with producer Ron Nevison (Bad Co., Heart) to produce a crisp, sharp sound. I had worried Michael might be sound a bit old fashioned but the song writing and enery of the music should rock any melodic rock fan.
Customer Reviews:
As Good as Walk on Water.......2006-07-11
Written in the Sand is a superb album that I would say is on a par with Schenker's previous release with UFO - Walk on Water. I can't understand the other reviewer's comments at all. Track 7 is the best on the album - a real corker with beautiful and extended soloing - but I struggle to find a bad word to say about the album as a whole. The vocalist is perhaps not everybody's cup of tea, but suits this material perfectly. Of recent MSG, this alongside Tales of Rock n Roll are the best; then Beware of Scorpions; then Unforgiven; then Arachnophobiac. This import version with two bonus tracks is actually the best version of Written in the Sand to get for precisely that reason - i.e. more tracks. Superb album!
Schenker Loses touch with reality.......2005-12-13
This album is by far the absolute worst release EVER from the "Mad Axeman" Leif Sundin's vocals are flat and boring and Schenker's songwriting is a complete disaster on this release. There are no "standout" tracks at all. I've had this album since it's original release and I think it's a waste of space but if you are into collecting cd's by Schenker as I am you will want this just to have your collection complete but it's not even worth my time to take it out of the case and put it into my cd player. I have better albums to listen to. Hell, I'll even put in a Britney Spears cd before this junk and that's saying quite alot!

Customer Reviews:
Finally, a strong, complete album.......2001-07-10
This album almost holds up to the Schenker titles from the pre-McAuley glory days. The title track has one of the best choruses ever in a Schenker song, and the instrumental showcases what a good, clear-as-a-bell tone is like. The vocalist and quality of lyrics are unusually strong as well.
This may be the last major-label quality solo effort we're going to see from Schenker for awhile, it's too bad he just didn't stop here.
A Must Have Schenker Album!.......2000-01-08
If you're like me, no recent MSG album has come close to the first two MSG albums (The Michael Schenker Group, and MSG). But I must say, I just got around to picking up Written in the Sand and I was pleasantly surprised! Michael hired a swedish (I think) vocalist that I seem to recognize from Gary Moore's album Dirty Fingers. I prefer his voice over all the recent blokes. There are some good odd-time signature riff songs like some on "Unforgiven" which I like a lot. The title track, Written in the Sand has an infectous grove. It is a rarity that Michael's writing style produces something so complete. He normally comes up with riffs and then it is the singer's responsibilty to write a vocal line around what Michael has already written. The title track sounds like both music and vocal line were written simultaneously-very cohesive. The lyrical content is much deeper than the typical girl-boy/party-all-the-time-lyric. A nice change. The re-make of Into the Arena is other-worldly! Not because of the guitar (which is played just like the original-awesome!) but because of the incredible double kickdrum stuff and the excellent bass solo! (Moe Foster/Simon Phillips eat your heart out!) it is an excellent effort and is worthy to be in every Schenker fan's CD collection!
A good solid album.......1999-07-22
After I have listened to the album a few times it has grown on me. It is not one you get on the first listen. Micheal even sounds a little like Eddie Van Halen in the song Esssenz..which is ok. If your looking for an album with his brillant solo's this is not the one because it is more song oriented..which is ok..you can't write the same thigs all the time. If your looking for an album with good middle of the road metal then this album is for you. It is better than the last two albums he did with Robin Maccauley but not as good as Walk on Water with UFO. It is good but not great. It does feature two re-makes off of first album which is a great example of his solo mastery.

who rocks? these guys rock........2003-04-06
I didn't think I would like this album when I first heard it. But these guys are awesome. It's great music to dance to, even if you don't like to dance, you just want to get up and wave your arms in front of you like the emo-wannabe that you are. This album makes me feel like I'm on adderol. What I think I like most about them is that you can tell how much fun they are having. There's nothing depressing or political about this album, which can be a breath of fresh air. Yeah, they are awesome. I want more.
Don't underestimate the power of Robots + Spiders.......2003-01-29
Written in the Sand have been an underground Chicago phenomenon for over a year now, and their first official release reflects everything they do well: instrumental pop and quirky energetic epics.
Although some may clump W.I.T.S. with better known yet lesser acts like The Anniversary or Sig Transit Gloria, their approach is really quite fresh. On the surface their vocals seem whimsical or naive but really they tap into a universal well of inner conflict and innoncence lost- but don't take it too seriously, at the end of the day this album is about finger-snapping, toe-tapping fun.
Thank Dan Jugle, the main keyboardist, for bringing it all together with the classiest of synth-lines on the ultimate lead machine- an old arp axxe. WITS do not pull any cheap shots and upon listening to this release you will realize that their perspective is infused with earnest songwriting by knowledgable, talented song writers. Just buy it now.
