This compact disk is the best out of the series. Whiskey in the Jar is an excelent song and even better live. The live version of Green Hell is very good too. If you buy one of these singles buy this one.

THIS IS GREAT, THE SMALL HOURS IS A FANTASTIC SONG AND THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST VERSION I'VE HEARD BUT DON'T BUY THIS SINGLE WHEN YOU CAN SPEND FOUR MORE BUCKS AND GET LIKE 3 OR FOUR MORE GREAT SONGS ON THE OTHER WHISKEY SINGLE. OK? GOOD. BUY THAT ONE.

the songs themselves are good, OK, but the arrangement and the orchastration is not satisfactory. you hear "thin" sounds from the instruments. you cannot feel a depth in the album..

A little rough around the edges.......2001-11-06

Before Jailbreak, Thin Lizzy had already recorded a few albums, but with the exception of that old Irish folk tune "Whiskey In The Jar" (This is where Metallica got the idea for their version)they had found little chart success. This collection shows some of their early promise, and also the roughness that seemed to prevent them from achieving success. With tunes like "The Rocker," "Mama Nature Said," and "Little Darling," you hear the band's hard rock roots, but there are just as many misses, like "Sara," and the unending "Shades of a Blue Orphanage" which is just as pretentious as its title sounds. Fans of the band, who have had difficulty finding the early material, might find this a needed addition to their collection.

Pleasing early compilation.......2001-02-01

This is a surprisingly pleasing compilation. I had spent a number of years searching haphazardly for the three earliest Lizzy LPs, or occasionally finding one or another without buying them, when I stumbled upon this. I was enchanted. At the time (about 5 years ago) I knew a lot of middle period Lizzy, but only the first three songs on this album. It is fun to have them (though I think Sarah trite) but the main joys are numbers such as Black Boys on the Corner, Mama Nature Said and the joyous stomper Little Darling with its ringing brass section.

The songs on this compilation are all, I believe, taken from the first three LPs and represent an overlooked and very valuable aspect of Thin Lizzy's output. Phil Lynott's lyrics range from the absurd(ist?) through corny rock'n'roll (but full of a swaggering joie de vive) to genuine folk poetry. Much the same as one might expect of Van Morrison or Bruce Springsteen.

I think Metallica is a great band, but their cover of Whiskey in the Jar is a travesty. Take the money you would have spent on this album and buy the Thin Lizzy version. One listen to that, and you'll never go back.

This is one that is definitly worth buying. It is a must for any Metallica collection. Thin Lizzy did a great job when they released their version of this old Irish drinking song. Metallica took it to another level as they always do.

Metallica doing Thin Lizzy? I guess that once the creative well runs dry, as Metallica's has during the 90s, then you have to turn to butchering other people's tunes to make you look like you still care about your roots. This is horrible, as is what used to be my favorite band. Pass this one up!!

A tribute to a great band from a great band. Metallica's remake of Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey in the Jar" is a masterpiece. Metallica fans and Lizzy fans can both enjoy this one.
