When he emerged in the mid-1980s at the dawn of new traditionalism, Lyle Lovett had more than a craggy visage to set him apart. His subtle wit, sly humor, and Texas-sized musical eclecticism made him a force. Built around 13 songs from his first three albums, this compendium resoundingly affirms those gifts. One hears his musical metamorphosis from the beginning, through the stomping blues of "Why I Don't Know," the honky-tonk talking blues "Give Back My Heart," and the folkier "L.A. County" and "If I Had a Boat." Nine numbers, including the Top 10 "Cowboy Man," appeared on singles (most as A-sides). The biggest oddities here are two newly recorded tracks, "The Truck Song" and "San Antonio Girl." They are Lovett's first new recordings in five years, and they share a nearly identical melody. Moreover, they really don't fit this context, though they may prompt hardcore fans to buy 13 songs they probably already own. Let's hope Lovett's working on an entire album where these two numbers will make more sense. --Rich Kienzle

It really does contain all of his best songs. Get your dancing boots on!

the quality of this cd made me purchase two more of his work

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice Compilation.......2006-02-28

Wow, what a great record. I too have most of Lyle's records. This is a very nice compilation. Of course, creating a collection of Lyle's work is very difficult and is bound to disappoint many: his records are so dense with brilliant music, it's very hard to pick among the tracks. This record includes many of my favorites, it's a very nice overview of early Lyle, and it shows why he is loved and famous. Couldn't get less than 5-stars for the music. Enjoy.

I haven't met anyone actually, who didn't appreciate Lyle's music. Hey, I like the Carter Family, Flatt and Scruggs, Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, Bill Staines, Woody Guthrie, Doc Watson, Norman Blake. (And Queen, Lou Reed, Warren Zevon, Martin Sexton, Patty Griffin, The Gipsy Kings, Paco DeLucia, Pepe Romero, Glenn Gould, Pablo Casals, U2, John Hiatt, Hothouse Flowers, Bob Dylan (including the electric stuff), Pete Seeger, The Wailin' Jennys, Will Ackerman, The Who, The Eagles -- why the hell restrict your enjoyment of music?) That doesn't mean I don't enjoy Lyle very much too. Lyle's popular because his music and lyrics speak to very many people. That's pretty well the definition of success for a musician - making art that gets the message across. Nevermind the elitism purist BS.

I too share the worry that Lyle is in a slump. Hey Lyle, we are all anxiously awaiting that album of new material!

5 out of 5 stars Lyle at his Best.......2005-09-09

I love Lyle Lovette and have several of his albums and this is by far my favorite as it is filled with classic Lyle songs. Simply put there is not a bad song on this disc and you will find yourself listening to it over and over again, in fact it is the disc I currently have playing in my truck. No matter if you are a life long Lyle fan or are interested in adding Lyle to your collection, you cannot go wrong with this disc.

1 out of 5 stars Self proclaimed "cowboy man" creates amazing insomnia cure!.......2005-03-09

Ask yourself one thing: would real cowboys listen to this? Would "Tuco" or "Angel Eyes" from The Good The Bad and The Ugly listen to this? Or would they shoot the person who put on this pseudo-cowboy-pretentious-whining-grasping-desperate piece of musical feces? If you're a cowboy who drinks Starbucks and shops at Eddie Bauer, then ya, I guess this might be the cowboy man for you. If you like your "cowboy men" to sing with weak, unsure voices lyrics straight out of a 13 year old girl's diary, then ya, this might be your cowboy man. If you like cowboys who never sat their 98 pound frame on a pony, let alone an actual bull, then this is your man. In short, if you don't actually like country music, blues or folk, but got the idea that it was cool to listen to them, this might be your least painful solution. You can impress your friends and neighbors without venturing into the deep, scary waters of meaningful well-made music.

To understand this review, take a look at the reviews of the other volumes in this series, particularly Vol. 4...
Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear or even become aware of its existence nor of that of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

5 out of 5 stars I Love This.......2006-12-05

I actually grew up listening to some of Mr. Haugen's songs in church and he actually performed at our church a while back. Thanks to CD's like his, I can actually listen to songs I like hearing at church at home as well. I can't really say what favorites I have because I like all of his songs.

5 out of 5 stars hey haters.......2006-06-01

I grew up with Marty Haugen songs and NO MUSIC makes me feel more tied to the Church and community worship with fellow Catholics like his songs do.

I understand it might be difficult for the older crowd to accept that music changes, but I SELDOM sing along to any of the older, traditional songs at Mass because I can't relate to the sound of them.

Worship is worship. Praising God doesn't have to be ONLY in the traditional-sounding songs.

1 out of 5 stars Symptomatic of Destructive Trends in the Church.......2006-01-05

If you are 50+ years old and were a hippie back in the day, then you will love this album.

However, if you have a vital relationship to Christ in the Eucharist and find that you desire to be more like John Paul II than Mick Jaggar, then you will most likely know what it is like to suffer through an aging Boomer dominated liturgy having to listen to the banal diddies of Mr. Marty Haugen.

The vista of the transcendent ought to be reflected in liturgical music - simple Chant, Classical Hymns, and Choral music do this very well because there is no agenda in the music other than Beauty.

The music of Mr. Haugen betrays his agenda to re-make Catholicism into something that resembles the folk-hippy-holiness of the Boomer's drug induced "mystical" connectedness of their youth.

This music is the fruit of Woodstock and pot culture brought into the sanctuary.

Just listen to the free clips above and ask yourself, "In 200 years time, will the Catholic Church still be singing these songs and consider them 'sacred music'?"

Me thinks not.

Spend your money on some solid Gregorian Chant instead.

1 out of 5 stars You have got to be kidding me.......2005-12-07

On the old Amateur Hour, Major Bowes would have gonged Marty Haugen about five bars into his first selection.

This shamefully cheap stuff has infected Catholic churches for the last two decades.

Why won't we do better than this stuff???

1 out of 5 stars People Buy This Stuff?.......2005-11-19

Having been force-fed Haugen's pap on a weekly basis for many years, I cringe at the thought of a Marty Haugen CD. It boggles the mind that there is anyone so sadomasochistic as to actually pay money to hear his drivel. "Gather Us In" is one of the most atrocious hymns ever to disturb the air, and this is just one of the vapors of miasma permeating Haugen's anthology.

"And he opened the sixth seal, and Marty Haugen composed music for Bryan Adams"

4 out of 5 stars Long-overdue compilation!.......2002-05-29

As BMG and UMG permit the masters to rot in their vaults (while begging to extend the current copyright terms!), our European collector-cousins come to the rescue with the first in-depth cross-label compilations of this wonderful and important vocal group.

Sound quality is variable as the producers worked from original pressings (and you collectors know what the Deccas sound like in mint condition!) but this should not deter anyone from picking up both this and its companion volume. The DRB had one of the most beautiful vocal blends of all singing groups; they helped pioneer the sub-genre known as "vocalise" on classic tracks like "Take The 'A' Train" and inspired countless imitators.

If you like doo-wop, pop vocal groups or vocal jazz, you should own these discs.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing voice, amazing man.......2007-02-06

This incredibly gifted man has produced some of the best live and recorded vocal performances I have ever heard. I was lucky enough to have worked with him throughout the 1992 production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Australia. Not only was I consistently impressed with his vocal abilities, I also found him to be one of the great gentlemen of the music business. Treat yourself to this CD and discover the voice, the elan and soul that elevate his performances beyond the extraordinary.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Male Singer Alive Today.......2002-01-14

John Farnham is by far the Best Male Singer Alive Today...hands down. Virtually Unknown here in America...he captured many American's "Ears" with his stint with the Little River Band in the 80's. I've seen him referred to as "The Blonde Guy" or "The New Guy"...then he dropped from the American Music Scene. BUY THIS CD...it will not let you down.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent.......2001-11-06

It starts with the anthemic 'You're the voice' and then just gets better. As the guy gets older his music gets stronger. Listen and enjoy, you won't be dissapointed. I guarantee it and no I don't work for the record company.

3 out of 5 stars Distinctly Farnham.......2001-04-14

No, John Farnham doesn't have the greatest voice in the world - or even in Australia. That title would go to the once-in-a-lifetime, world class voice of another Aussie - Anthony Warlow. Warlow's clear, rich, powerful baritone makes Farnham sound like a wailing Bee Gees reject.

No, John Farnham isn't the most well-known Aussie singer. That would be 70s-80s icon Olivia Newton-John. No one I've ever met in the U.S. has ever heard of Farnham. Newton-John is a household name here.

What Farnham does have is personality, charm, and a distinctive sound. It's not a bad voice, and Farnham uses it wisely and well both on ballads and catchy pop numbers. Even on recording, his irresistable love of performing shines through. More importantly, he is synonymous with Australian pop culture - as much a part of the country's flavor as kangaroos and g'days.

No, he doesn't have Warlow's voice or Newton-John's name recognition. But he recently performed a concert series with both of those international legends, and it was billed as Australia's three most beloved performers. That alone says all one needs to know about his place in Australia's heart.

5 out of 5 stars Australia's best male vocalist by a mile.......2001-03-23

As one of Australia's best known and most popular male vocalists, John Farnham has a unique vocal quality that has grown and developed along with his fans from his first single, Sadie the Cleaning Lady to his latest hit.

There wouldn't be one person in Australia who doesn't know of this artist or who doesn't have an opinion about his vocal qualities. John Farnham is a home grown product of the Australian music industry who has achieved tremendous success and popularity over some thirty years.

The problem with Farnham is that he gets better and better and it never ceases to amaze me how he can continue to come up with new material and develop his vocal qualities further. His performances on stage are supurb and his ability to involve the audiences ensures that concert goers receive value for money. He is simply brilliant and must be heard. His albums succeed with or without on air play by radio stations. Such is his talent and popularity that his admirers just keep buying his albums.

Farnham has the capacity to turn all his albums to top selling albums, such is the admiration and respect his has earned from his audiences in Australia and overseas. What ever your likes in music, one thing is certain, listening to John Farnham will send chivers down your spine and make you yearn for more. He is simply Brialliant.

If you haven't experienced his music, you haven't experienced music.

This guy in his prime had the songs and chops to be a real axe hero and these songs show just that, a true guitar hero. A great place to start if trying to discover PT for the first time. long time fans have all this stuff on vinyl, trying to find it on CD has been down right impossible until this year with some reissues. Now put "Hot Shot" & "Black Pearl" on CD with some bonus tracks as well! This guy rocks!

5 out of 5 stars Pat Travers Anthology V.1.......2002-03-09

Pat Travers kicks some major booty! It's hard to pick a favorite from his bountiful catalog. It's a shame his early albums aren't available any more. Only a few selections can be found in the various "best of" or "live" offerings. They contain some of the hottest rock and roll with a flavor only Mr. Travers can serve up. His more recent albums steer down a bluesier path than his earlier offerings, but I can be happy with just about any of this vastly talented guitarslinger's tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Travers, Pat-Anthol. Vol 1.......2002-01-18

Probably some of the best straight forward rocknroll you will ever hear in your life..great composition, lyrics, guitar riffs, and attitude all wrapped up here...enjoy and be sure to let your kids hear what Rock n' roll really is...
