Highlight versions of cast recordings are by definition a compromise, and this reduction of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera is no exception. Weighing in at 59 minutes, it's over 40 minutes shorter than the two-disc version, excising many musical scenes that convey the flow and impact of the show (which include, admittedly, a lot of patter and screaming). On the other hand, all the hits are here--"Think of Me," "Angel of Music," the title tune, "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Masquerade," and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"--and Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are still on hand to make their distinctive contributions to the original London cast. So if you're looking for a convenient, inexpensive single disc that will let you enjoy Lloyd Webber's scrumptious melodies without having to immerse yourself in the action, this just might be for you. --David Horiuchi

I really liked the idea of a highlights cd; however, The Music of the Night is not the same one that is on the original two-disc cd. The words aren't even the same. If you enjoy Music of the Night, skip this cd. Otherwise, this cd would be 5 stars.

Great short version!.......2006-12-06

If you only want to hear the songs from this musical, this one is for you. But if you want the full version, get the 4-disc version. I listen to this version in my car when I'm on the road, but I listen to the 4-disc version at home. Both versions are worth the purchase.

A long time favorite.......2006-08-26

This is one of my most treasured CDs. The voices of the cast are incredible! "Think of Me" and "All I Ask of You" are 2 of my favorites. If you enjoy the story behind Phantom, yu will like this soundtrack.

The Best Recording of this Show Available.......2006-04-21

I think that this is the best PHANTOM soundtrack out there:

1)It has the original London cast, the best.
2)It cuts out the more risqu? parts of the show (believe me, there are some), making it "appropriate for the whole family."
3)The entire CD is on one disc, so you can go through the show w/o switching discs.
4)The only song that the movie soundtrack has on it that this doesn't is "Learn to Be Lonely," which appears in the credits, and isn't really a great song anyways.

I bought this CD as a birthday gift for my boyfriend. We had misplaced the one that we had and needed a new one. This is one of our favorite cd's. Such beautiful music.

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Beautiful.......2007-06-15

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

Washington, D.C.'s Thievery Corporation purvey a very mellow, deliberately international mixture of sounds that might be called "lounge music"--not in the kitschy sense, but in the sense of a laid-back local bar (much like the one the duo happens to run) with no dance floor. Rob Garza and Eric Hilton are professed admirers of Brazilian music, and they're determined to inject as much warmth into electronic music as possible. The Mirror Conspiracy is quite a musical travelogue, starting in Jamaica with "Treasures." This dubby opening track, which features vocalist Brother Jack, is quite reminiscent of the start of Swayzak's Himawari. Next up is "Le Monde," a quiet, wah-wah-inflected song featuring a chanteuse named Lou Lou. She reappears later on the somewhat more uptempo "Shadows of Ourselves," which, despite the title, is also sung in French. "The Hong Kong Triad" sounds like a tip of the hat to Shaft-styled soundtrack music. Elsewhere, it's off to India for two sitar-flavored tracks with a similarly laidback groove that gets a bit closer to techno, one of which, "Lebanese Blonde" (hash? a woman?), has been released as a single. Brazil gets its due on the densely percussive "Air Batucada," the more bossa nova-like "So Com Voce," and an instrumental titled "Samba Tranquille." Fans of this style are sure to be pleased. --Bob Bannister

I typically respect peoples' opinions regarding reviews. However, I have to take exception to the "alla fishkop no.1" review. The review talks about the lack of originality and the "same as 90% of the chill out around". I notice you don't share any thoughts about other Thievery albums you own in comparison to this one...Oh I know, you probably don't own any other albums by them...that's why!!! This is a definitive album for a genre that is filled with wannabees that try to cash in on few talented people in the business. The reason why it "sounds like a lot of other chill albums out there", is because this album has been around since 2000 and has been a benchmark for all other artists since then trying to capture the essence of this sound. Thievery has been spinning quality tracks since the late 90's and will continue to dominate this genre for a long time. I see that you're from NY....chances are, you probably think Louie Devito spinning at the Sound Factory is the sh**!!. Don't give reveiews on music you don't know poseur!!

Stealing Time For Reflection.......2007-04-12

If you come to Thievery Corporation expecting anything other than downbeat dubs and unruffled rhythms, expect to be disappointed. This D.C.-based duo of Garza and Hilton are experts at sampling sounds from all over the world (primarily India, Brazil, France, and Jamaica) and building out of them a lounge ambience that is deep and drool-worthy.

You could say that the songs are derivative, evidence of artistic talent used to trace old drawings, but in an age of sampling, loops, remixes and homages, "derivative" seems like less and less of an insult (these guys, anyway, revel in it, if you haven't noticed the name of their group). These songs are, everyone one of them, brilliant in a warm, enveloping, devilish way, music for secrets. These are the songs to which hair is tucked behind ears, candles flicker on dull veneers, hands -- under tables -- are placed gently on foreign knees. Its the kind of album that makes you believe anyone, listening to it, could be a good dancer if they just let the notes take over.

The Mirror Conspiracy brings to the sometimes harsh light of electronica a honey-hot glow. The boys in Thievery Corporation aren't trying to pull off any acrobatic stunts or massive implosions of sound, but they do execute some dizzying and hypnotic sleight-of-hand. It's a dreamwave of an album, a great score for seduction, and the tender taunt of temptation. Give Thievery Corporation a chance, and they may just steal your soul.

Suprisingly dissapointed..........2007-04-12

I've purchased this CD based on huge popularity of previous albums on radio,good reviews on Amazon, plus this album always comes up as one of the bestsellers in Chill/Jazz/Electronica genre sections, of which I'm a big fan. Well, I was highly dissapointed after listening for 10-15 minutes, and could barely go through the end. They are not bad, it's good music, but nothing special. The sound and beats are too familiar from 90% of other Chill bands. I did not sense any originality,direction, and movement in any piece. Every piece flows and finishes the same way it starts. Wallpaper,wallpaper, wallpaper. The bottom line is that I've heard this million times before. Even vocals don't help this album. I wouldn't spin this album even if I owned a lounge.

Still my favorite.......2007-04-05

If you bought this album because "Lebanese Blonde" from the "Garden State" soundtrack is on it, congradulations! I first picked this up in 2000, and was blown away! I have bought all thier albums since. This is an excellent album by Thievery Corporation. "The Mirror Conspiracy" still has a special place in my musical collection. This is, to me an album in a classic sense. Meant to be listened to from beginning to end. Incorporating elements of Dub, Reggae, Indian, Bossa Nova makes for an eclectic listening experience. You should put this on for your next coctail party.

Superb chill-out music.......2007-03-16

This album is an essential part of my music library. It is a collection of some of the finest, most tasteful down-tempo music out there to date. Definitely a must-have.

Alejandro Agonistes may yet have a happy ending, but you wouldn't guess it from this torrent of surrealism and gothic textures. Escovedo's first album since nearly succumbing to hepatitis C and crushing debt in 2003 is the darkest, most mysterious album of his career--a harrowing, poetic soundscape partly the result of producer John Cale's industrial-noir sensibilities, but also Escovedo's own avant-garde punk roots. The difficult trilogy which opens the album moves from arid Arizona (a wasteland where the soul finds nary a drop to drink) to a conversation with a "dear head on the wall" that becomes a negative Zen poem ("The sadness will come / When there is no one") to a cryptic vision of a buck trampling a wandering doe. Writing with his wife, poet Kim Christoff, as well as Chris Stamey and guitarist Jon Dee Graham, Escovedo isn't just confronting his own mortality and the mistakes which plunged him into a nightmare. He's courting a danse macabre for the sounds and poetry he finds there. On "Sacramento and Polk" he surveys a bohemian hell through a "Thorazine haze," while the Princely groove of "Take Your Place" only seems like a discordant funk party until the lyrics sink in: "I'm going down, down, down / There's nothing here." Escovedo's voice has weathered the physical ravages, caressing all the Mexican nuances out of the synth- and cello-sweetened "Evita's Lullaby" and breaking beautifully on the country ballad "Died a Little Today," which, like each of these emotionally concentrated tracks, is as literal as it is elusive. --Roy Kasten

As if ample evidence were needed that extraordinary music can be made without benefit of chemistry, Escovedo, his co-writers, and Cale have produced a darkly jeweled kaleidoscope, a flowering of post-illness creativity that incorporates some of the most interesting instrumentation I've heard on record in some time. No longer satisfied with the usual, Escovedo stretches far beyond the punk or alt-country mold with a symphonist's virtuosity. These songs are punctuated by stunningly surrealistic lyrics and the twisted virtuosity of some of the most unusual ensemble players and soloists I've heard in years.

no such thing as a bad alejandro escovedo cd. this is one talented gentleman. mid-tempo songs, slow-tempo songs, and hard rockers make this a recording with a fine mix of moods. as usual, there is a wonderful variety of textures; with violin, cello, accordion, acoustic guitars, and electric guitars blending into a creative flow of sound. produced by the great john cale, the audio quality is excellent, the atmosphere fresh and beautiful. this cd was selected by "no depression" magazine as the 7th best album of 2006. i, too, highly recommend it, as i do all of this artist's recordings. fine stuff.

The other reviewers summed up many of my feelings about this CD. Why don't I love it? It is because I have come to expect a certain sound from AE. I am listening to a previous release called Gravity right now and can imagine listening to it 100's of more times.

The Boxing Mirror, produced by John Cale, has some excellent songs that rock as much as anything AE has ever done - Arizona and Sacramento & Polk come to mind immediately. The hooks are in you real fast and I listened to Sac & Polk many times at AE's website totally mesmerized by the big raunchy sound. But, will this disk survive in the heavy rotation of my CD changer staying for months like the Buick MacKane and True Believers CD's - probably not.

For fans of John Cale, I think they will love this disk and I heartily recommend it to them and also new fans of AE. For the older fans, you may be dissapointed.

All in all though, I did give this 4 stars because it is better than 99% of the stuff being released today as music! Go AE!

Vibrant Rock Hybrid.......2007-01-21

Alejandro Escovedo who is related to Sheila E & has been in rock bands Rank & File, the Nuns, & True Believers has produced an excellent CD. Escovedo's "Pyramid of Tears" from his "Gravity" CD remains one of my favorite classic album cuts of all time. On this CD we have a number of excellent tracks. "Break This Time" rocks with roaring electric guitar and strings to great a vibrant rock hybrid, "Whoever told you there'd be no danger, nothing to fear here in this house of pain; So speak to me softly & tell me you love me & we'll join together in the refrain." It's a breathtaking stew that climaxes with the closing bars. "Take Your Place" places a complicated lyric on a driving rock beat, "I'm going down, down, down, even deeper still, 'cause this world has gotten so f***ed up." "One True Love" written with Chris Stamey is a wild rocking track, "I'm all messed up; I got nothing to take your place." The opening cut "Arizona" is a haunting melody that snakes eerily through self-exploration, "I turned my back on me & I faced the face of who I thought I was." Mark Andes who was in the bands Spirit, Jo Jo Gunne & Firefall plays the bass on the set. This is a dark album. Dark and Moody.......2007-01-20

I saw this guy on PBS and he sounded great playing live, so I bought this CD, which has a many of the songs he did on TV. The album doesn't seem as powerful as the live show. There are some good songs, though. I like "Arizona" & "Break This Time." Escovedo has a melancholy sound, but not quite depressing. Also I have to admit, I just love pronouncing his name!

The music on this album always takes me inside myself and makes me reflective about my life. The first track in particular evokes memories of past as if seen from a distance through a gauzy haze. Very emotionally cleansing.

Very similar in theme/texture to "The Pearl". In fact they could have easily been a dual CD. Hard to believe they were recorded four years apart.

Other recommendations of minimalist ambient music include "Quiet Music" and "Structures From Silence" by Steve Roach.

I can't say enough great things about this music!.......2007-01-19

I've just recently become a fan of Brian Eno's ambient music, and it's all great, but this record in particular is truly outstanding. Harold Budd's piano playing and Eno's production and treatments complement each other perfectly, giving rise to a truly spectacular ambient music experience. Eno's goal for ambient music was to create music that was rewarding to listen to either at low or normal volumes, and that's certainly the case here. I love all kinds of music, but ambient music can't be beat as a background for working or reading (which was the intention). This music is also good for meditating or for having in the background when talking with friends. It's relaxing, lyrical, beautiful, and uplifting. I've known about Eno for a long time, but I wasn't familiar with Harold Budd before the Ambient series; I'll have to look more deeply into his catalogue. Strongly recommended.

Perhaps the best of the Ambient Series.......2006-05-05

A breathtaking album of ambient music stretching from the First Light of Dawn to the Failing Light of Twilight. Calm, epic and transcendent, this music will refresh your mind like a cold stream high in the mountains.

The cover art shows an image of land and ocean as if one were floating high above it. Perhaps one is looking at a map. You can see lines crossing the ocean and connecting with the surrounding landscape. The music maps out the texture of the albums world, chiming like shining jewels in the night.

Haunting, calm and beautiful.......2005-07-28

My dad first turned me onto Brian Eno. I bought "Here Come the Warm Jets" and loved it. After that I decided to start acquiring more of his discography. I was quite suprised when I bought this cd and stumbled into his ambient phase. Well, let me tell you, it was quite different from his past forays of loud guitars, electronic treatments, and quirky neurotic vocals that I had been accustomed to. Yet, the change in direction was in no way lacking from the quality that I had herd on his past records. It was just a different genre.

I can't really describe ambient music so I will simply use Brian Eno's own words "background music that is herd over the tinkling of forks and knives". It's definitely intersting but you have to be in a peaceful state to appreciate it. I have often found the best way to enjoy this cd is to put in on in a dark room and lay down. When you are calm you can appreciate the slow crawling pianos, soft noises, and slow building crescendos and waves of sound.

This may not exactly be your cup of tea, but if you are into trying something different I say give it a shot. I did and I really enjoyed it. Of his ambient pieces this is probably my favorite with "The Pearl" as a close runner up.

Rarely do I ever give an item on my reviews 5 stars. This review may not even be read as this album is a lost treasure. I just have to say, I don't know what it is that this album does to me. It puts me into some very, very calm zoned out mode. I can't explain it, maybe this is how people feel after serious meditation and yoga. Just so relaxing and mellow. Honestly, my stress and worry are put aside when I put this CD in. I just can't put into words the mood/zone it puts me in, almost a spiritual feeling. Odd that music can do that huh? Especially these 3 songs on this CD make me feel like I just popped a valium: Not Yet Remembered, First Light, Failing Light.
When I need to balance out my thoughts, return to my inner peace. I play this CD. WHich has to be my all time favorite CD. It even makes my mean cat sit down and stretch out and close his eyes (honest). Picture yourself on a fall day, it is dreary and overcast, there is a breeze, leaves blowing past you, and you are sitting on the edge of water, like a river or lake, and feel this incredible sense of well being ..If you check it out, just remember it is ambience and instrumental.

Kendel Carson - she's a name, voice and fiddler/violinist who will indeed be remembered from a first listen to Rearview Mirror Tears, her delightful and alluring debut album on Train Wreck Records, produced by Chip Taylor. Already a musical veteran at age 22, she's been capturing ears and wowing audiences across her native Canada and around the globe with her prodigious talent and luminescent aura since she joined her first musical group at nine years old.

So it's no surprise that Rearview Mirror Tears sounds like the assured work of a veteran artist, rich with an uncanny and winning familiarity, seducing listeners to spin it again and again. After all, it's the work of a true artistic natural whose soul is suffused with music, and then on Rearview Mirror Tears is paired with another equally musical soul, master songwriter Chip Taylor, composer of such indelible classics as "Wild Thing" and "Angel of the Morning" and éminence grise of Americana music and the contemporary folk-rock and singer-songwriter scenes.

It's a collaboration that at first glance may seem like a seasoned veteran mentoring a gifted protégé, but the album soon reveals something else at work that's even more vibrant and exciting. The way Carson inhabits the album's songs with a full, rich presence and stamps her identity into the music with her vocals and playing tells a different tale: An artistic union of two friends and kindred musical souls. There's a spirit and life that pervades Rearview Mirror Tears that can only come between two talents in prime form enjoying their creativity in full flow.

Carson was all but destined to make memorable music from birth. Growing up in Victoria, British Columbia, she began playing violin at the tender age of three. Carson ascended to the upper reaches of the Canadian classical music world while still young, appearing as a featured guest soloist with the Victoria Symphony and later joining the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.

At the same time as she was achieving mastery as a violinist, Carson also became immersed in the vibrant Canadian folk scene as a fiddler, first with the BC Fiddle Orchestra and then with her brother Tyler as The Carsons, later to become the group Kid Carson. Her collaborative nature also later landed her in the Juno-winning roots music band The Paperboys, with whom she quickly became a notable member on their most recent album, The Road to Ellenside. Her duet with lead singer Tom Landa, "Fall Down With You," was the first video single from the disc and hit #4 on Canada's MuchMoreMusic video channel.

After first meeting her in 2004, Taylor began offering Carson long-distance encouragement and guidance in the months that followed. With Taylor in his most prolific and inspired state within an already prolific and inspired career, their creative alliance bloomed. By the time they hit the studio for a couple of days of recording in 2006, magic wasn't just in the air but in fact captured on the tracks they quickly laid down. On Rearview Mirror Tears, they create an album of music that feels like it was not just meant to be, but ready to emerge and capture the ears of the world at large. With an organic ambience of natural artistry in unfettered flow, the sessions became an album by an artist in first full flowering. Ranging with ease and engaging charm through a variety of roots music modes and emotional and musical moods, Rearview Mirror Tears is one of those exceptional creations that feels memorable and meaningful from its very first notes.

So even though Taylor wears such hats on Rearview Mirror Tears as producer, songwriter, singer and record label, his true role was ultimately encouraging Carson, a fellow talent and peer (despite any age difference), to become who she is and all that she is able to become. And as Taylor sees it, it's ultimately Carson's artistic capacities rather than his own that makes Rearview Mirror Tears all that it is. Terrific debut album. Kendel has a nice soulful voice, and the instrumentals on this album don't drown it out. She does some up-tempo stuff as well as some excellent ballads. My favorite cut is Ribbons and Bows. I heard it on XM radio and had to hear more.

The Who Classic Masterpiece AS YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE.......2007-06-12

The Album is a masterpiece of all time rock n roll, even if this is "the less Who album" of the Who... but nevermind!
The Sound in both Stereo (from the original master tape discovered in the vault of UMG) and 5.1 (mixed by Pete Townshend himself) is great...
As you put the disc in your player you'll hear the great differences from the 1996 reissue even if you have only a "simple" CD player..
If You're a great Who fan and you a have SACD player buy ABSOLUTELY this album and enjoy it 'til the laser of your player won't work anymore...
The second disc is clearly for fans only but the quality of some track even if are demos or outtakes is very very good!!

A Landmark Classic Now Made Even Better........2006-12-26

One of the most important, groundbreaking amd influential albums in the history of rock and roll, The Who's 1969 magnum opus "Tommy", a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, is now better than ever thanks to the brilliance of SACD and DSD remastering techniques.

Every song on the cd sounds like it was recorded just yesterday. It is 100 % crystal clear, perfectly remixed and remastered. It gives you a clearer view of the story as well as a more pleasurable than ever listening experience. Pete Townshend and the people involved in this truly put their hearts into making "Tommy" better than ever.

The bonus disc is also worth it. A lot of awesome raritis. The liner notes are an interesting read, and the album itself is of course a masterpiece nobody should be without.

A Milestone of Early Rock!.......2006-09-29

"Tommy" is beyond question one of the big milestones of early rock. Musically the band were at the peak of their creativity.

All band members were obviously extremely talented musicians and both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were/are great singers. Apart from few exceptions like "Cousin Kevin" all songs are outstanding; and it's really great to have the whole story on one CD - compared to the old double vinyl album.

Though the storyline may seem a little weird today ( to me it always did ), there is so much great music on this album.

The second bonus CD gives a very interesting insight in the developement of some of the songs. Though the sound quality is exellent CD 2 will mainly be of interest to hard-core Who fans. None of these alternate versions are better than the ones chosen for the album, though a few come close. The studio version of "Young Man Blues" which did not appear on the original album is a nice addition too!

I Love it !.......2006-09-06

I was so blind-sided by this reissue - really. I have looked at this for a few years now, but I never picked it up. My impression of this was that it had some very good music along with some dated sounding tracks, so it wasn't a high priority. I'd been having very good luck buying hybrid SACD's even though I don't own a SACD player; the CD layers benefit greatly from the DSD mastering, making them stand head and shoulders above the latest PCM remasters (there are a few exceptions), so I decided to take the plunge.

The CD layer is stunning. I must have been sitting there with my mouth open after "Overture" began. I experienced emotion that wasn't there on previous listens to this on CD and vinyl. Yes, some of the tracks still sound dated, but most of this album is very good indeed, and this remaster is so incredible. If you own a great stereo rig, I highly recommend buying this - in fact, even if you don't have a great rig, I recommend it!

The Who's classic rock opera gets a 35th birthday celebration fit for a king!.......2006-08-13

The Who's fourth studio(and fifth overall) album Tommy was released in May of 1969.
The Tommy album by The Who was the make or break for the group because if Tommy had failed, The Who would have probably disbanded due to lack of funds despite their concerts selling out based on Pete Townshend's guitar smashing and Keith Moon's drum kit demolishing at the end of each gig.
Guitarist Pete Townshend, under the gun after I Can See For Miles failed as a single in the UK(although it was their biggest ever hit here in the US) came up with a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid named Tommy whom becomes those aforementioned things after witnessing an event as a child that traumatized him(his father killing his step-father whom he considered his father).
Originally considered to be a single length album, the band felt it didn't make sense so they expanded it into a double album and the result is one of rock's Top 10 greatest double studio albums in history(alongside other classic double albums like the then-already released Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and The Beatles' White album and would help pave the way for more classics like The Rolling Stones' 1972 masterwork Exile on Main Street, The Who's 1973 release Quadrophenia, Elton John's 1973 classic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Genesis' 1974 masterwork The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Led Zeppelin's 1975 classic Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd's 1979 masterpiece The Wall and Bruce Springsteen's 1980 classic The River among many others).
Alot of classics appear on this album like the Overture, the classic Top 20 hit Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, the Underture(best instrumental on here which is basically a repeat of the album's other instrumental Sparks), Go to the Mirror, I'm Free, Cousin Kevin(one of bass player John Entwistle's greatest compositions), Fiddle About(about the perverted Uncle Ernie), Tommy's Holiday Camp(another excellent ditty written by drummer Keith Moon whom did an excellent rendition in the film version of Tommy in 1975) and the classic finale We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me Feel Me.
The other tracks on the album It's a Boy, 1921(You Didn't Hear It), Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Do You Think It's Alright, There's a Doctor I've Found, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, Smash the Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson and Welcome are all great pieces as well though tend to be overlooked.
The album made The Who legends for good and peaked at #4 on the Billboard chart and was their first Gold seller(eventually Platinum).
In 1996, the album was re-released as a remastered CD but used different masters for the remixed reissue.
In October of 2003(just in time for Tommy's 35th Anniversary), Geffen Records(formerly known as MCA) re-released the album as a 2-disc Hybrid SACD with the original mix on the CD layer and a killer 5.1 mix on the SACD layer and this version uses the very original tapes that were found in Universal's vault after being said that the original tapes were destroyed by Kit Lambert in a fire. As a result of the discovery of the original tapes, the sound quality is amazing on here.
Disc two has great outtakes and demos like I Was, The Who trying to record Sally Simpson with hilarious results and instrumental versions of Tommy Can You Hear Me and Tommy's Holiday Camp among many other rarities plus a cool booklet with rare photos.
Highly recommended.

Michael Cretu, the man behind Enigma, formulates an intriguing symbiosis between New Age musicality, classical and world-music influences, and dance-club rhythms. Gregorian chants, Native American meditations, and the breathy musings of a French chanteuse have been incorporated into legendary dance-floor hits from his previous three albums. The leitmotif of his fourth album, The Screen Behind the Mirror, is the grandly ominous "O Fortuna" from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. "O Fortuna" opens the set and appears repeatedly throughout the tracks, sometimes lurking in the background, sometimes storming into the forefront. This album marks Enigma's continued foray into the ambient New Age realm, as Cretu's efforts focus more and more on melding compatible styles of world music, while the tracks are mixed into a single continuum. There's a lot to chew on; bits and pieces of church bells, Middle Eastern singing, and native instrumentation from you-name-it fold into each other on a steady current of shuffling hip-hop rhythms and velvety synthesized melodies. Cretu lends vocals to several songs, and his voice stands somewhere between Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins (though it's not as good as either), tending to distract from the album's flow and mood, lending it more of a prog-rock feel at times that he probably intended. Albums like this continue to invoke the same question: Is this a beautiful, transcendent union of artificial and indigenous sounds or is it just a bunch of self-indulgent schlock? What a phrase!!!!!
Every body find a different meaning for each word or sentence, for this CD I found the smooth part of the world of Enigma.

This is a review I wrote almost three years to the day on a different amazon account that I am deleting, and I just wanted to put in my two cents.

Being the fourth album from the legendary musical mastermind Michael Cretu, it was also at the time the most different (now his fifth album voyageur stands out as the most individual). I consider this album and Le Roi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi to be his (Michael Cretu) best album. The amazon editorial review said it all. Of the two questions posed at the end of her review, i must say that Enigma's music is a beautiful union between artificial and indigenous sound. This album is beautiful. Tracks that stand out the most are "Between Mind and Heart" "Modern Crusaders" "Gravity of Love" and the second track, which i forgot the name of. Buy this album!

My favorite Enigma album.......2006-10-13

Even non-Enigma fans can appreciate this CD. There is not a single weak track on here and the songs range from really upbeat (Push the Limits) to slow and relaxing (Traces), uplifting (Between Mind and Heart) to almost angry sounding (Camera Obscura). If you don't get any other Enigma album, get this one (and maybe "Le Roi..."). I mean "Smell of Desire" is pretty much worth the price of the CD all by itself.

Chill-Out at its best.......2006-07-24

im a heavy listener of faster material, mainly trance and progressive. Like nice solid beats, and always appreciated a good melody and a background. Never did I think that I would ever actually end up addicted to a chillout or new age album, and here it is, im puttin my Dj Tiesto on hold, puttin all my CDs away, to listen to this beautiful and rich album. I cant go an hour without playing Push The Limits or Traces. Whether you like clubbing, or staying at home, or getting drunk, or whatever, its a sin not to give enigma a chance with this, even if your a fan of faster stuff like drumnbass or trance.

One of the better cd's I have heard lately........2006-01-21

Well, many people would say that Enigma is backround music or novelty music or whatever but I have to disagree. Many of the songs on here are too powerful and surley have too much emotion to be simply called backround music. With that said this cd has 3 of my favorite Enigma songs which include: "Push the Limits", "Gravity of Love", and Traces(Light and Weight). The rest of the album is very good also these are just the songs that really stick out to me. All in all I would be very quick to recommend this cd to those with open minds and fans of real music.

Substituting eager Pearl Jam for wizened Crazy Horse, Young returns to the Ragged Glory formula--big guitars, droning rhythm, mystical poetry--for this one-off 1995 CD after a joint concert tour. Pearl Jam, especially new drummer Jack Irons, focuses Young's ideas and challenges him in ways the more forgiving Horse never does. "Downtown" became an immediate rock-radio hit, and the song's three-chord force keeps even the lines about dancing hippies and Jimi Hendrix from getting stale. Singer Eddie Vedder shows up sporadically but makes the most of a shadowy bridge on "Peace and Love." --Steve Knopper

The big 'grunge sequel' to Ragged Glory. Hippie ruminations, utopian platitudes, abstruse self-examinations - all set to distorted basement jam euphoria.

Murkier mix without Briggs but higher-energized with Pearl Jam, so a 50/50 deal. The huge tunes: "Truth Be Known" is Floydish, "Act of Love" punkish and "Peace and Love" epicish. Not QUITE as hot as Ragged Glory 'cause the solos aren't as abundant, or as reckless and, all in all, the tunes (riffs, phrases, intangibles) aren't as wildly unpredictable.

Still ... this is hots**t rock. NOBODY else (like, idiotic Rundgren or grouchy 'ol Bob) can pull off such obstinate Woodstock thumping crackle - NOBODY.

Mirrorball is one of Neil Youngs best rock cds it has great guitar Jack Irons is great on drums. Neils voice is good and there are great songs song x i am the ocean peace and love throw your hatred down truth be known is like 70s Neil Young and Crazyhorse.

Neil Young rocks with Mirror Ball.......2007-01-10

Mirror Ball is my favorite Neil Young album. Every song on this album is a winner. You just can't beat the sound of Old Black and the Fender Deluxe and this is the overwhelming sound on this CD. Lots of great guitar solos, great beat, great backing by Pearl Jam. I'm the Ocean certainly seems to be an autobiographical number. If you like Rockin in the Free World, you will love this whole CD.

it should have been so much better...or maybe i just got my hopes up too high. these are totally lame midtempo four-chord songs with no sonic variety, just distorted strumming from mr.'s gossard and mcready the whole time and snare on beats two and four from start to finish (jack irons might be a good punk drummer). i suspect that by not doing any uptempo or technically challenging numbers the members of pearl jam were trying to be deferential to mr. young, trying to not upstage him in any way or come off as show offs. unfortunately, the mix engineer nixes this shard of decency by burying young's voice under the guitars, apparently inspired by and trying to duplicate in a studio the "one man, a small speck in the middle of the cosmos" feel that happens at the end of "rust never sleeps", and how young's voice peeks out from "behind the clouds" occasionally. however i don't think this sound is really strong enough to carry an entire record and in fact it doesn't even come close to doing so here.
