Album Description
Deep Purple need no introduction as one of the all-time great British rock bands. Their association with Montreux goes back to the early seventies, when their attempt to record their album "Machine Head" at the Montreux Casino was thwarted when it promptly burnt down, forcing them to make the album in the rooms and corridors of the Grand Hotel instead. The story was, of course, immortalized in their classic song "Smoke On The Water" which is the climax of this 1996 concert from the Montreux festival.
Bonus Tracks from Montreux 2000 are: 1. Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming 2. Fools
This concert will also be released on DVD by Eagle Eye Media later in May, with different bonus tracks from the 2000 show.

Face it, this one SMOKES........2007-05-16
I'm a long-time Deep Purple fan, and as much as I don't like the idea, Richie Blackmore walked away from this band voluntarily after 1993's half-hearted, inferior album "The Battle Rages On." Steve Morse...a guy with no shortage of chops...sits in the guitar chair now. He is supremely gifted and driven, and the fact that he's not Blackmore pales in light of the scorching performance he delivers here (along with every other member of the band). I was less enthusiastic about Don Airey as Jon Lord's replacement, despite his pedigree, but Lord's here, and so are Mach II alumni Gillan, Glover and Paice. The song selection is tight, the performance is red-hot. The songs are being kept alive by musicians who are INTO IT, so what else can you ask for? You can't write the history of 70s metal...or 70s FM radio for that matter...and leave Deep Purple out. These songs are timeless, and in their original incarnations, they changed the landscape of rock & roll forever. Eagle Records has shown a penchant for ONLY releasing quality performances...no cutting room floor garbage, no dreck. This is no exception. Get your Bic lighters ready...you WILL be lighting them. As a bonus, "Woman From Tokyo" is played straight here (as opposed to the "goof" version on the 1988 Blackmore-era concert disc "Nobody's Perfect," that fell apart into a version of Buddy Holly's "Every Day" and was pretty much a teaser, a disappointment, and a waste of space).
A Good One Amongst the Many..........2006-06-30
The sound was good, the mixing even better. Morse does some fine work on this one. Plays hard on Ted the Mechanic, Pictures of Home & No One Came.... Gillan does some nice work on Hey Cisco. The bonus songs were a little different... same venue, 5 years earlier. Not a bad effort none the less.
Among the glut of Deep Purple live albums this is a beauty.......2006-06-28
Deep Purple release a huge number of live albums - this is the third from the 1996 European tour I own (Live Encounters and Live At The Olympia are the other two). While too much Deep Purple is rarely enough, this set is a ripper. Ten tracks from a festival appearance (plus, confusingly, two bonus tracks from 2000 at the same venue), well recorded, the band in top form, and Steve Morse demonstrating the style that makes him a worthy Deep Purple guitarist. I buy almost everything Deep Purple put out, and I was very impressed with this one. Recommended.
Great Live Deep Purple .......2006-06-13
This cd is excellent!!! Steve Morse is great and Jon Lord and Ian Paice are on their best! Ian Gillan's voice is in really great shape and with the combination of all musicians being in tune this is one of the best live deep purple projects. Made in Japan is still their best! But considering all, this one with Steve Morse is great! Well worth the money! I will but the DVD!
Best Live Morse era Live recording available........2006-05-20
This is simply the Best Live Steve Morse era Live recording available.
Some may feel that "Total Abandon" is better but it doesn't seem to be available as a cd anymore. The mastering on this cd has a glorious crisp sound. Gillan hits every note, including the high note in the second chorus during Woman from Tokyo, and he hits it good! Jon Lord is having a great night very tight and fearless. Steve Morse again very tight and fearless. Glover and Paice are clearly enjoying themselves as they swing through this thunderous set. The DVD should be equally great. I have all of their live stuff from the Morse era ( the Bootleg Box , the Soundboard box and all the DVDS) and I can say that this tops all of them. Both the '1996 and '2000 songs are great. No cringing on these performances at all. Please do yourself a favor and plug this in ,light up a cigar and let the speakers shake your house in glorious Purple fashion.

Customer Reviews:
classic incognito.......2007-05-11
I felt this was a good album, I really enjoyed the horn section and what can you say about Maysa???!!! The price for the cd was a bit much ,but I'm an incognito fanatic and can't seem to get enough of their material. this collection is for the avid fan...
Capture the moment.......2001-03-28
Like Whitney say's One moment in time....she must have Incognito on her mind!
This cd is a great moment captured on one great cd! I seen incognito live in nyc, and popping the cd on brings back momments i wish I can re-live.....If you ready for a jammed pack...get up and dance..cry and shake you bom bom...this is the cd for you!
Got dancing shoes and a kleenex?
A rousing set worth every penny!.......2000-10-22
If you think Incognito is just a studio band think again. This live offering captures a tight, energetic, perfectly balanced band having a great time in Japan. Incognito fans will appreciate the ample song list loaded with favorites, but fear not; this isn't a boring greatest hits concert. There is a jam-session feel on several of the cuts and Maysa really shines with her own versions of Roots and Everday. The whole thing is mixed beautifully just as you'd expect from Bluey. Love it!
Strong performance..........2000-07-06
Bluey is bouncing on this one. If you are an incognito fan, you will want to get this CD.. Does a neat run little off of "Colibr" and the Ronnie Laws tune "Always there". Nice CD to drive with, just keep your eyes on the road while you're passing up the other cars on the freeway.. This is an import only? Hopefully there will be some more live CDs like this one in the future. The record lables may have to catch up first perhaps, they are a bit slow to creative music like this.
Better than a simple Greatest Hits CD!!.......1999-08-12
I hate "greatest hits" compilations, especially when I already own the original CDs. Live CDs, on the other hand, are something I look forward to with great anticipation. "Incognito: Tokyo Live" does not disappoint in the least.
I thouroughly love every track. An added bonus is the inclusion of a great rendition of one of my top-3 Incognito songs, "Always There". Excellent! The arrangements depart from the originals in unusual, creative, and exciting ways. The only thing that would have made this CD better for me would be if it was a double-CD. Ah well, next time.

Customer Reviews:
Another superb live show from Pendragon!.......2000-10-25
"Live in Krakow" in Pendragon's 4th official live album, and rates alongside it's imediate live predecessor ("Utrecht, The Final Frontier") as the bands finest live work. Like "Utrecht" the sound quality and production here is absolutely excellent (which was not the case with Pendragon's 1985 live release "9:15 Live"), and the performances are always full of energy and passion. This show was recorded during 1996's "Masquerade Overture" tour, and relies heavily on material from that album, as well as some earlier tunes thrown in for good messure. The highly emotional performances of "Guardian Of My Soul", "The Shadow", and "Paintbox" should not be missed by any progressive rock lover! Nick Barrett (lead vocals & guitar), Clive Nolan (keyboards), Peter Gee (bass), and Fudge Smith (drums) always function together brilliantly as a musical unit. These musicians obviously know something about dynamics and musical arrangements. They know when to kick it loose, and when to hold back for dramatic effect...and thats just one of the things that makes Pendragon the most exciting band on the current progressive rock scene!

Great music, poor sound quality of live performance.......2003-03-26
Fighting Gravity is a fine ska band (little bit of this, little bit of that) and I had the pleasure of seeing them live twice while at the College of William & Mary. This disc set covers just about all of the songs I had previously heard and they are all great songs. Unfortunately, the audio of this live performance is pretty bad. At times, the music fades to a whisper requiring one to crank up the stereo... I'm hoping to find these songs on a studio recording...

Enjoyable, but not worth $50-$100.......2007-07-12
Picked up this somewhat hard to find live collection from a used-like-new vendor on Amazon for under $30...an excellent value. It's surprisingly well produced for the most part, though I do find myself tweaking the volume control occasionally.
Only some narrowness of song selection and a couple of 'clunkers' keep this from 5 stars. 'All This Useless Beauty' tunes are the centerpiece. If you don't like ATUB, you'll be wasting your money here.
'It's Time', 'Man Out of Time', 'You Bowed Down', 'Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes' and 'I Want to Vanish' are among the best cuts. However, the versions here of 'Little Atoms' and 'All This Useless Beauty' far exceed their studio-brothers and are the real finds for Costello completists looking to embellish their desert island best-of collections.
Useless Beauty and Oldies.......2004-10-24
Excellent stuff, better than I expected. They play almost all of Useless Beauty (a favorite of mine) and a bunch of older tunes. The commentary between tracks is funny and insightful. Grab this if you can find it!
Elvis, stripped down and brilliant.......2003-03-30
Unsurprisingly these songs sound fantastic stripped down to guitar and piano (Pete Thomas plays drums on a few cuts). Only 30,000 of these were pressed ... 5 eps from 5 different concerts that the duo played in 1996. Your EC collection is incomplete without this one!

Uneven recordings..........2004-06-07
I would have to agree with a previous comment about the recording not being so great. Listening in my car, I notice that in the middle of some songs that the bass suddenly starts to hit harder - like someone actually realized that the recording isn't balanced out - then it goes back to it's weak backing track (the levels, not the music itself). If it was "recorded off the soundboard" like many live albums, it would have been a six star review. The levels just don't do the work justice.
I saw De La Soul many years ago in the Detroit area at a place called The Magic Bag. The performance they gave was literally one of the best I've ever experienced. It also helped that it was one of the smallest venues I've ever went to - very up-close and personal. After the show, they hung out on the stage and met everyone that wanted to come and talk. Name more than a handful of artists that will do that anymore.
All-in-all, the music is great - but the recording is flawed. Even then, I still can't stop listening to it. My biggest disappointment of the whole album is that Oodles of O's isn't rapped as hard as they did at The Bag. They added a whole new dimension to that song that night. Think Posdnous meets Mystikal...
Reason for Tardiness..........2004-06-02
I think the De La had some beef with the label under which this cd was released (Tommy Boy). I know that they've started their own label (AOI records?) so that they could have more creative control- which is exciting. This CD could be Tommy Boy's last attempt to make some money off Plugs.
I agree with the above- I would have liked this CD alot, oh, 6 years ago when these were still new songs. Proof that record companies are just run by idiots. Hooray for the new label and new tracks.
Loved it but I'm afraid it is too late!!!.......2004-05-26
Well, I've been a fan since 88-89 and I will say this is a solid lp. I would have given it 5 stars but I've heard all of the songs before, it was recorded in 96,and I thought live instruments would be playing in the background. I would LOVE to see a DvD release of this performance.
Native Tongues were represented except for A Tribe Called Quest (Q-tip & Phife on "Buddy") I think De la waited too late to release this live lp. Eight years is a lifetime in hip hop but it goes to show that good hip hop never changes. The late 80's and early 90's a good time for hip hop, the goldern era if you will. Tribe, De la , and the J'beez were trendsetters in the game and in my opinion they still are. Look at the J'beez now. They are totally in left field with their music now (check out J'beez third lp-- J'beez wit the remedy/in my opinion was way ahead of its time-recorded in 93.).
This live lp should be used as a blueprint for all true emcees. The true emcee doesn't look for gliz and glam. They simply want to move the crowd. De la soul doesn't have to go platinum or have another hit lp as far as I'm concern because their track record speaks for itself.
Okay, if you love DE LA, get it. If you don't own a DE LA lp and love hip hop music, get it. Guest appearances: Common, Mos Def, and the Jungle Brothers. Oh I forgot, One thing. Some of the music is hard to hear in the background. Maybe it was my cd player or maybe because it was a live recording. I'm not sure but I would definitely recommend the lp to all De la Soul lovers.
Just to note, my favorite De la lp is De la Soul is Dead. A true hip hop classic.

Customer Reviews:
Gee, what a fine band!.......1999-10-31
It's wonderful that the revival of swing has allowed new big bands again to find an audience and opportunities to perform. George Gee leads a 17-piece band based in New York which truly deserves more recognition than it has gotten. This is surprising since New York City used to be where you went to become famous, but this is probably the result of the shift in the entertainment industry to Los Angeles. More closely resembling a jazz band from the mid-fifties rather than from the heyday of swing in the forties, this is an exceptional band here performing live for an appreciative audience which doesn't get in the way of the music. The men play so well together that it's hard to single anyone out for particular praise; however, tenorman Lance Bryant and Irvin Stokes on trumpet should be mentioned. Vocalist Carla Cook is heard on a couple of tracks. Singing with hints of Dinah Washington and just a little of Sarah Vaughan, she needs to be featured more. And we definitely need to hear more from this band.
Excellent, danceable, Basie-Ellington type big-band sound.......1999-05-18
The sounds of George Gee's orchestra remind you a lot of the best traditions of big band greats like Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Almost all the tunes on the CD have an amazingly good arrangements. Excellent continuous medium-tempo beats that are great to dance to along with great improvisations by the brass section and piano.
Unlike the modern rock bands like Cherry Poppin' Daddy and Brian Setzer who just believe in pointlessly fast beats, this band's music seriously swings. There are smooth ups and downs and the tunes are a great pleasure to dance to. The band is even more fun in person. This is a definite MUST-HAVE if you're looking for a single CD with medium-paced tunes to Lindy Hop or swing to.
Excellent job, Mr. Gee and your orchestra. Its great to have a band like yours that keeps the dancers wanting for more, more, more!!
Swinging Danceable Big Band Jazz and Blues.......1998-12-21
Gee's CD recorded live at a New York Swing Dance Society Sunday Night Dance (in its 15th year of weekly dances) is the best danceable real jazz big band CD made in recent years. Do you think you know Shiny Stockings -- this CD has a special arrangement for Gee by Frank Foster who originally wrote the song for Count Basie. Plus original songs. You will listen to this and dance to it -- the only other recent swing CD's that is of this quality and style is Lavay Smith's. Both Lavay and Gee could be set back in the 30's and would pack people in.
Classic big band sound that really swings.......1998-11-28
George Gee is the darling of the NYC swing scene and this CD shows why. He sticks true to the classic big band sound without straying into ska or pop. Listening to "Swingin' Live!" you'd think he was one of the original swing giants of that era. Also, the songs on this CD are danceable and not insanely fast like that of some neo-swing bands out there.

A Great Reunion.......2000-02-22
I was there that night and the show brought back some great memories of the 80's when Scream was huge. This album is as raw as they come. Typical live album, where the sound quality isn't as good as studio, but really hard.
