Product Description
Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee on January 12, 1984, King Biscuit Flower Hour: In Concert finds Girlschool in the midst of their transition from the sort of female-biker punk-metal that made them Motorhead's soul sisters, to a more commercialized pop-metal sound. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

4 out of 5 stars Girlschool - 'Hit & Run' (Castle).......2006-07-04

Originally released in 1981,this was Girlschool's second lp.Well written and played girl's night out of 'New Wave Of British Heavy Metal' to be fully taken in here. They're like an all-female version of Motorhead. Most notable cuts include the rocking opener "C'mon Let's Go","(I'm Your)Victim",their cover of ZZ Top's "Tush", title track "Hit&Run" and "Future Flash". So,you get the original album eleven song, plus nine(9)bonus cuts on the CD reissue. A definite should-have.

5 out of 5 stars Finally on CD!!! But..........2006-02-14

GIRLSCHOOL were a sadly overlooked heavy metal band made up of (guess what!) girls! But despite what you might think of a band with girls playing their instruments, GIRLSCHOOL played with such an intensity and a knack for hooky, catchy songs that some of their male counterparts twisted in shame. Despite being spawned during the NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL's peak, GIRLSCHOOL's sound owed much to fellow punks like DISCHARGE and GBH and of course, MOTORHEAD, with whom they made a friendship that lasts even to this date. The guitar sounds are decidedly brutal, making any of DEF LEPPARD's records of the time (1980-1983) sound positively tame in comparison. HIT AND RUN is GIRLSCHOOL at its most intense, heaviest and fastest, yet the songs were really memorable and had this had a more "subtle" production it would have been an international hit. Songs like "Yeah Right", "Come on Let's go" and the punkish "Watch Your Step" were melodic yet utterly heavy. The press at the time labelled them "MOTORHEAD with breasts" and to a certain extent they were the female equivalent to that influential band. No other female band has sounded any better. Someone said something about the DONNAS here, and, just for the record, the DONNAS' "spend the night" actually sounds very close (production and song wise) to what GIRLSCHOOL were aiming at here. Of course, 25 years later a band like the DONNAS can get away with doing this stuff, but back in the very early 80's we only had GIRLSCHOOL.
One more thing: this cd seems to have ommited the song, "Race With The Devil". As far as I can remember, it was cover song but it really gelled well with the band's original material. It's a shame that song was not included for it would had made this CD a truly complete re issue.
For fans of thrashy british heavy metal and MOTORHEAD. Buy or die!!!

5 out of 5 stars Watch Yer Step!.......2004-09-09

This is the best rock record ever recorded by an all-girl band.

This is the second best NWOBHM record, behind only "Killers" by Iron Maiden.

I would give $1,000,000 to hang out with Corin Tucker and listen to this together...

It's untouchable. 65% Motorhead, 15% AC/DC, 10% Van Halen, 10% The Ramones.

The songwriting is immpecable. Production superb. (Best rythym guitar sound in the history of the world)

All those lame bands like The Donnas and Sahara Hotnights just can't hold a candle to this.

What's it mean when we live in a world where your MOM'S rock 'n' roll kicks your rock 'n' roll's ass???

Sad, but this is beautiful.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Singles and Just the Singles.......2007-06-16

I don't think any singles emerged from Girlschool's one-off Mercury disc (where they glammed up and rocked less-hard). So that album, Running Wild,(as always) gets skipped over but every other single up to the "Take A Bite" era is here. (Were there more singles off "Take a Bite" than noted here? I thought there were.)

It's chronologically correct so that pleases the collector in me.
It's redundant enough to give you both versions of 1-2-3-4 Rock and Roll and both versions of "Take It All Away".
The liner notes are adequate; more a fold out poster than the normal booklet. There is a description of each single and the 45's front sleeve is shown.
The line-ups are described and you get all the info.

The re-mastering seems to be adequate and most fans will be happy with this.

It does seem like a rehash of The Collection only minus album tracks and the non-single Live Cuts.
Fans will buy it. I know because I did.

Originally released in 1982,as 'Screaming...' was the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal's(only?)all-female band's third record.Very nice job on the CD reissue.I wondered as to WHY I've never seen this title in stores before, apparently this is it's first pressing on compact disc. You get the album's original ten rockers, like "Live With Me",the ass-kickin' "Don't Call It Love","Hellrazor" and "Flesh&Blood" plus eleven(11)bonus tracks tagged on from a 1982 BBC Radio One In Concert shindig.I mean, come on!Who could possibly resist?A must-have.

4 out of 5 stars Three Times Running..........2004-12-25

This is the last of the "classic" first three Girlschool titles. It's the FIRST time it's ever been available on CD.

Although not quite as good as the two records that preceded it, "Screaming Blue Murder" is still a fantastic entry in the Girlschool canon. This version contains Nigel Gray's orginal mix, as opposed to Chris Tsangarides remix done on the old U.S. release (on vinyl in 1982.) That gives this version a much rawer vibe and brings it much closer in feel to the punkish first two intstallments of their discography.

All the same elements are there, catchy, driving, punk/rock/metal delivered with lots o' balls. A bit of filler creeps in, but I swear if "Turns Your Head" around were to pop up in a movie soundtrack, Girlschool would be back on everybody's radar.

Excellent. Even with the filler, still better than ANYTHING any of the current crop of "all female rock bands" has to offer.

4 out of 5 stars 999...EMERGENCY...999...EMERGENCY!!!.......2004-09-09

This is the 1980 debut from Girlschool.

Not quite as superb as the follow up, the magnificent "Hit and Run" which also just got Sanctuary's reissue treatment, but close.

All the same elements there. Punk-inspired/fuled NWOBHM (let's face it, all the NWOBHM bands really reveal their essential rock 'n' roll qualities 25 years later) with a heavy dose of Motorhead.

The songwriting and production would improve on the next release, but all the spirit, fire, drive and rock 'n' roll attitude is present right here.

A must own!

I pray Sanctuary now reissues 1982's "Screaming Blue Murder" with it's original U.K. mix. That would be the final icing on the cake!!!!

Cheers, you lot!

4 out of 5 stars Ultimate Collection.......2007-01-15

How many "all-girl" rock bands can really rock as hard as their male counterparts, especially when those counterparts include bands like Motorhead, Diamond Head, and Saxon? Only one - Girlschool. Forget about lace, this band is all leather and steel. They're one of the more important, yet somehow still overlooked bands from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) scene, and have been delivering hard-hitting, kick in the teeth, rock & roll since the early 80's.

Castle's 1995 compilation titled simply "The Collection" is about as comprehensive an overview of Girlschool's career as you are likely to find. It features a whopping 47 tracks collected on 2 discs, and covers the band's entire output. In addition to songs from various Girlschool studio albums, the Collection includes b-sides, live tracks, covers (of ZZ Top, the Sweet, and T-Rex among others), and collaborations such as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre material the band recorded with Motorhead. The material has been digitally remastered, so it sounds better than ever. You also get a nice booklet with all sorts of band info and photos. Castle is the best in the business when it comes to high quality NWOBHM collections, and they definitely got this one right.

If you're new to Girlschool, the Collection is the perfect way to get acquainted with this classic hard rock band.
