3 out of 5 stars Another hit and miss recording from Mr. Vai.......2006-10-06

The first disc is quite good, a lot of diverse instrumentals. Vai mixes some slow numbers with some faster ones, but the overall theme is mellow. The second disc sounds like a recording from a 1980s hair band. I can appreciate that Vai is an intelligent man and desires to communicate with his audience, but words are not necessary to do this, they really aren't. Satriani, Beck and Schencker have always been at their best when they just let the guitar do their talking. Mr. Vai is also at his best when he just lets the Ibanez speak for him. ***** for the first disc and * for the seond disc, I curbed up the final score for a ***.

4 out of 5 stars More of the same and something new. Between 3 and 4 stars........2006-07-22

There are a few things that have always held Steve Vai back. One is the fact that his albums are almost totally instrumental and the other has been his experimentalish which has rarely been easy listening, more a catalogue of awesome skills. This album addresses both issues with some degree of success yet should also keep his more purist fans happy.

The melodies in the first two tracks are a good indication of the direction Vai is playing with, both ride motifs that last the whole song through, which means they actually come across as songs rather than an insanely talented dude doing a soundcheck, playing snippets of unconnected music.

in fact if you can sample the first two tracks you really should as they will let you know if this album is for you as they are so indicative of much of this album. Of course there are also the weird little interludes (I hesitate to call them songs) that Vai has been playing around with for many years now. So this album can be said to address the first problem with much of his product.

The second issue I mentioned above is the lack of vocals. Therefore the lack of connectivity with an audience. On this album there are a number of tunes, mostly in the latter half of the record, that have lyrics. Rassuringly these lyrics seem to follow the same Steve Vai pattern of strange introspection and quirkiness. None of these songs are going to end world poverty or anything, but they do make a change to the normal Vai album. Alas it would appear that he has chosen not to add these songs to his live set - having seen him live in 2005 he only played two songs with lyrics during the whole gig. Which is a shame as the entertainment value and human connection factor would of been vastly improved.

Still, for Vai fans this is probably an essential release given that on this album he's stepped outside the normal bounds for this genre and that's a hard and a brave thing to do. And nifty cover art too.

2 out of 5 stars More Is Less.......2006-07-20

Ho hum. Another bombastic affair from Mr.Vai. How can a guy with so much talent have such bad taste? I find this cd unbearable to listen to. It's overproduced freeze dried sound is a major turn off. If you're an 80s hair band fan then this is the album for you. I'll stick with my Mike Keneally cds.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.....................2006-04-17

An amazing work by an amazing musician. A lot of people pigeonhole Steve Vai into being just another guitarist, a relic of the shred-happy '80s. But take another listen. Forget his stints in Alcatrazz and Whitesnake, forget that ridiculous triple-necked heart guitar that backed David Lee Roth, and listen to Vai's own music, made on his own terms. Yes, he is an incredibly talented guitarist, but he's also much more, a true modern-day composer. No matter how off-the-wall his songs seem, there's an amazing musical quality and deep spirituality that underscores every note in his truly amazing body of work. As for Fire Garden, it can't be adequately explained in a short review. The first phase is pure magic, especially the Fire Garden Suite. His lyrics are a little corny in some of the tracks in phase 2, but his voice, while not the most beautiful in the world, fits every song perfectly. In closing, this is an amazing album in both its scope and its execution, giving the listener a glimpse at the many sides of Steve Vai, the man. A definite must-have; I can't recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Stand in awe.......2005-11-09

This is a wonderful album. So much melody, so many twists and turns, so much fun.
If you're not already in love with this album, then I recommend for starters Track 7, Hand On Heart, and Track 18, Warm Regards. Play these three times in a row (at high volume, it should be obvious), and then you'll be dying to hear the rest of the album.
There's hardly anything detractive to say about Fire Garden. Hm, let's try hard: Well, Blowfish is a bit too distorted for my taste. Initially I found Little Alligator and All About Eve too grungy, but now I'm also fond of them. Whookam and the weenie story are funny for about ten runs; now I skip them, but that's ok.
Steve Vai is not a natural born singer like Robert Plant and Bono, but he's worked a lot on it (like with everything else he does, let's not forget), and he's become really good. (I just don't understand his detractors on this point.) I couldn't imagine anybody else singing on Brother (and not at all on his spellbinding Dying For Your Love on the album Real Illusions: Reflections).
What he does with his guitar is just beyond words.
The Crying Machine is a killer (as several other reviewers have noted).
He also has other excellent musicians playing along on particularly drums (and I guess John Kalodner does his job well again, whatever it is).
Listen for a while, and then stand in awe!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent performances of a selection of Herrmann's later film scores.......2007-06-15

Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic produce fine performances of a selection of Herrmann's post-1955 film scores.

The music itself is of variable musical interest.
The music from "The Man who Knew too Much", "Vertigo", "Marnie", "North by Northwest", "Taxi Driver" and "Psycho" shows Herrmann at his best.
"Torn Curtain" and "Fahrenheit 451" find Herrmann at his least inspired and it is a pity Salonen didn't jettison these items in favour of something else.

The performances cannot be faulted and lovers of Herrmann's music will find much to enjoy here.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, at reduced price.......2006-08-15

As much (if not more) than any other film composer, Bernard Herrmann's music stands up to listening independent of the films. The emphasis here is on Herrmann's scores for Hitchcock, when both men were arguably at their creative heights.

Note: this is NOT a collection of original soundtrack recordings. However, Salonen and the LA Philharmonic at absolutely top-notch, and the recording is beautiful. Certain subtleties are actually easier to hear on this recording than on some of the originals.

As if I couldn't recommend this highly enough, the price has been reduced on this reissue! This deserves a wide audience, don't hesitate to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Ensemble Galilei's music is lilting, elegant and unexpected!.......2002-11-29

With their soulful playing and artful, sometimes even ephemeral arrangements, the six women of Ensemble Galilei convey a rare depth of emotion. In the insert notes, gamba player Carolyn Ann Surrick describes their creative process: "[In making this recording, we engaged in]...a kind of work that is so focused and intense that years can go by in one afternoon... Extraordinary music-making requires trust... [We] live for the times when the only thing that exists right then is the music--when the instruments are speaking as if we don't exist, and they are having their own conversation." Thank you, Ensemble Galilei, for allowing the rest of us the privilege of coming along for the ride! It's simply delectable. This chamber ensemble, featuring fiddle, harp, gamba, oboe, pipes and percussion, can also be heard on their other Telarc release, "From the Isles to the Courts", and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music", on the Dorian label.

    5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2001-01-22

Sheer beauty, as a lover of English music I found this to be one of the most beautiful of all Shakespearean albums. Such harmony, such subtlety, one wishes that the gentle night will never stop.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2001-01-04

Ensemble Galilei provide some excellent arrangements of English renaissance compositions. I believe that John Playford (English Dancing Master) fans will be particularly satisfied with the renditions presented here. It is very unfortunate that E.G. did not provide more arrangements from such early music sources. Some of E.G.'s own compositions seem very weak and not in the renaissance spirit of the rest of the CD. Nonetheless, this CD is highly recommmended.

5 out of 5 stars It will bring about many gentle nights.......2000-11-22

I found this album to be solid. Very sweet, but not afraid to use percussion which makes it livelier and more fun. I adore the quiet, peacefulness of the music and the flawless execution of these renaissance songs.

    5 out of 5 stars Visualizing Beauty.......2000-08-20

I recently had the good fortune to direct a performance of King Lear--the ENTIRE five acts, in a community theatre, non-profit setting. I used twenty-four fully committed non-actors, who for the love of the ideas, participated in this performance. The first and main challenge that I faced was, how do I go "behind" the words, and invoke the right emotions, etc., to give these actors the range and tools needed for an effective, powerful performance? Critical to this performance was the beauty and brilliance of this recording, which I used throughout the various scenes of the play. This helped the performers tremendously, creating the different tapestries in the mind of the Bard. In short, this work is real genius, that I was so happy that I stumbled across. I am now putting in our performance programs, along with our most heart-felt thanks to E.G., the name of the recording and I have copies from Telarc to sell at each performance!

    Product Description

Sweet Seraphic Fire brings together two unique bodies of American sacred song: choral compositions from the New England singing-school tradition and the most popular Evangelical Protestant hymn texts in historic American use. In the late eighteenth century the New England singing-school movement produced America's first great sacred-music style, employing several genres of unaccompanied four-part choral compositions with the melody in the lead (tenor) part. The enormous popularity of singing-school music also promoted a canon of hymn texts shared across America's competing Evangelical Protestant denominations. This recording contains neglected masterworks from the New England singing school that also helped to create the American hymn canon. Marking a more recent turn in this process, we have also included some new settings of traditional Evangelical lyrics written by leaders in the revival of singing-school music that has blossomed in the Northeast since 1976. ! Selection of pieces for this recording was determined by correlating "The Norumbega Harmony"--our collection of one hundred six historic New England singing-school compositions and thirty contemporary works in traditional style--with a list of the three hundred most frequently printed hymn texts in America from 1737 to 1960. --Stephen Marini

Some of the songs are kind of dreary, (Hatfield) but all in all this is COOL!!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing sound quality and excellent performances.......2006-02-05

I haven't listened to the three audio cds all the way through, but I did listen to most of the Eine Kline Nachtmusik. I have the Phillips Duo version which I don't think is included here (It seems like they're a couple years apart), though the Phillips Duo got the coveted rosette from the Penguin Guide To Classical Music, this version on this 3CD Set, is played a little better, and it makes the Duo version sound like it's played in a wet paper sack. The sound is so darn crisp and brilliant that's it's just simply breathtaking. Get this "A Celebration" disc as fast as you can, and you'll thank me! I promise! I kind of listened to a little bit of everything, just to see if the sound quality was as good as the Mozart Serenade, and the sound quality was superb on all the pieces. There's also a bonus DVD which is very enjoyable of the Tchaikovsky Serenade and I'm forgetting the other piece, so in all your getting 4 discs. It sells here on Amazon, but I didn't check the prices it's going for, but I'll check and give you the lowest price. I just checked the used prices, and someone is selling their's for $8.00 like new, so that sounds like the bargain of bargains to me. Enjoy!!!

After By the Still Waters and Under the Stars, Fire-Flies is Joanne Polk's third and final recorded volume devoted to the piano works of the American composer Amy Beach, who was born in 1867 and died in 1944. The varied and always beguiling works span the composer's career and include "sketches" and "improvisations" as well as her piano transcription of Richard Strauss's lied (German art song), Standchen. Polk's interpretations are fluid and clear, by turns impassioned and ethereal. In the laudable effort to bring Beach's music greater recognition, Polk is in good company; the Hildegard Publishing Company has recently reprinted a number of Beach's works and Adrienne Fried Bloch has written a Beach biography, published this year by Oxford University Press. --Gwendolyn Freed

5 out of 5 stars BEACH AT HER BEST (YET AGAIN, AND LASTLY).......2003-03-05

With this third installment, Joanne Polk completes her consistently thoughtful, exceptionally performed and unforgettably diverse traversal of the solo piano music of New England's own, Mrs. Amy Beach [1867-1944].

In reviews of Volume 1 ("By the Still Waters") [February 11, 2003] and Volume 2 ("Under the Stars") [October 24, 2000], never having heard any of these works before, and being caught completely off guard by the continuous melodic invention, ingenuity and personal voice of Beach, I had hoped to adequately express my excitement and enthusiasm. There were wonders here unique to the repertoire--- the marvelous Variations on Balkan Themes, Op. 60, the attractive miniatures of Op. 128, the Valse-Caprice, Op. 4, the mournful Hermit Thrush "dialogues" of Op. 92--- that needed talking about.

Volume 3 ("Fireflies") offers, if possible, piano music even more strikingly original than its predecessors. There are inspired creations here, too--- the lyrical, Schumannesque Four Sketches, Op. 15, the delightfully comic, almost jazzy Fantasia, Op. 87, with its slips and slurs trippingly mindful of Bach, the forward-looking miniatures of Op. 148, which subtly recall Brahms, Scriabin and, of all people, Ernesto Lecuona, the atmospheric impressionism of the Nocturne, Op. 107, the wistful Elgar-like ruminations aptly titled From Grandmother's Garden, Op. 97--- that cry out to be recognized and heard.

The apostolic Ms. Polk enables us to do both. By her absolute communion with the composer, she transfixes, her breadth of vision, every thought, whim and nuance captured to perfection in a recording of incredible clarity and warmth. Absorption such as this precludes the notion that these pieces can be played any other way.
