Hallo-wha?.......2006-04-19
Let me start by saying I've never listened to Steamroller before picking this up. I am a big fan of Halloween and have quite a collection of music/sound fx so naturally, this was a must buy when I saw it.
Strictly from a Halloween fan's point of view, I can't recommend this except maybe for a kids party. The synth on the tracks really removes any spookiness from the tunes and makes them fall short of Halloween-worthiness. Tocatta and Hall of the Mountain King are some of my absolute favorite classical pieces and here they are given a royal treatment...if they were produced on a Commodore 64, or Casio keyboard for you younger folk.
The FX disc isn't horrible, but it's below the average generic sound fx you find in the bargain bin. Again, not much scary except for the fact that I spent money on this.
If possible, check it out before you buy.
An interest take on the usual.......2005-11-06
I wasn't sure what I'd think of this from reading other reviews, but I really did like it. I'm not really familiar with Mannheim's other stuff (but if the rest of the Autumn cd is anything like Harvest Dance, I'm looking forward to getting it), so I didn't have any preconceived ideas. I have a lot of the classical pieces on other cds, but I like the different twist given to them here. And I did like the sound effect cd. Nicely spooky (I have enough other sound effects cds with screaming and muching ghouls, etc).
Could have been great but . . ........2004-10-15
As a big Steamroller fan, perhaps my hopes were set a little too high. I envisioned more original music (perhaps a more scarier vibe than the silly one this CD has to it) and maybe a few covered tunes. Chips originals (from the Fresh Aire series)found on this CD outshine the weak efforts put forth on the covered and rearranged tracks. The sound effects disc sets a great(and creepy)mood, that should had been followed through with some new and equally scary compositions.
If you're a die hard Mannheim fan (as in 'I just have to own everything Chip puts out') I say go for it. But otherwise spend your Halloween money elsewhere. Overall this is a forced and lazy effort.
It's not That bad..........2004-06-14
It's not scary. There, you have it, that's what it all boils down to. With a creepy cover like that, you'd think it would be terrifying! It's not, but it's not bad, either!
A lot of the songs sound kind of like low-budget MIDI tunes that are sometimes embedded in websites.. but I think that might have been what the Steamroller was going for. Kind of like a broken Music Box? Anyway, only a few sound low budget, the rest sound good, even a few are a little "eerie" but at the same time, there's a lot that pretty much remind me of something you would hear come out of sesame street toy. The sound effects are great, though.
There's a few songs that are bad. there's a few that are "babyish" but there's also Lots that really capture the mood of halloween and some of it's eerieness. I can't really recommend it for Halloween itself (maybe if you already have every halloween cd already) but I think any Chip Davis fan should give it a listen.
Tries to please everyone.......2004-06-02
One of the neat things about the holiday of Halloween is that it is so versatile. Where Christmas has a very straightforward story (Santa or Jesus, take your pick), Halloween can be many things. Some people see it as a sort of Mardi Gras atmosphere, where any kind of costumed theme is suitable. Others see it as a dark holiday, only suited gothic castles, zombies, and monsters. Still others celebrate it in the style of gory slasher movies, complete with deranged serial killers and buckets of blood. And then there is the non-scary childrens Halloween, where the ghosts are cute and jack-o-lanterns all have goofy grins.
This CD covers all these aspects of Halloween, which virtually garantees that no one will like every song. However, I would suggest that you pick and choose the tracks you like from the CD, as part of your overall Halloween soundtrack. You will probably find at least several tracks you like. And of you like Mannheim Steamroller, you will like most of them.

I do the Time Warp again and again.......2007-05-17
For most people, especially discerning classic music afficienados, they'd rather own the soundtrack with the entire suites included, than to own a compilation. This series by Telarc is an exception, since the performances, while not definative, are still spectacular. And being its a Telarc release, sound quality is always excellent.
Telarc has release a whole slew of these symphonic Sci-Fi themed CDs, and while all of them seem to have something to offer, they all fall short of feeling like a piece of art onto themselves. This CD comes closer to being an artistic statement as any in the series, and if not for the misstep of the overlong, boring rendition of the orginal Star Trek Menagerie suite done for the TV pilot, this could have been stellar. The rest is a near perfect compilation of classic works mixed with modern classical works. The inclusion of the Menagerie suite is unnecessary here, since the TV show was already covered on the Star Tracks series. Perhaps they could have included a work from Holst:The Planets, or any other sci-fi movie.
Over all, this the best in that it came relatively early in the series which has since worn out its welcome. This disc, along with the first two Star Track CDs, is a nice collection of symphonic works.
Great Dynamic Range ... Good Selections.......2007-02-19
This older CD offers the true "Pure Digital" audio potential of CD's.
One can easily destroy an expensive speaker system using some of the selections provided.
So... keep your levels low the first time around.
You will enjoy this offering!
Cheers,
JC
A Cherished Memory.......2005-10-02
I remember when I first purchased this CD. Compact Discs were hard to find (at least the kind of music I liked). Everything was still on vinyl. This sounded so incredibly powerful over my LPs. "The Menagerie: Suite" composed by Alexander Courage with Erich Kunzel conducting still sounds very impressive. This Compact Disc really demonstrates the prominent characterists of Digital recordings. I still love my soundtracks on LPs but this CD has now become a nostalgic part of collection of film music.
From a Galaxy Far Far Away to the year 2001.......2003-07-08
Time Warp brought together the best of the science fiction world. Everything on this cd is classic. The Alien closing title, "The Menagerie," and my favorite, "Also Sprach Zarathustra."
Although Strauss' renewed version of "On the Beautiful Blue Danube" isn't as good as the original, it is definatley great. I think only Dorsey's "Ascent" was a let down. I did not enjoy that piece.
Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra from "2001: A Space Odyssey" is brilliant. The entire cd is full of artistic minds.
Classic sci-fi gets the symphonic treatment!.......2003-04-02
"Time Warp" was the first recording by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops that I ever purchased. And it, without a doubt, was money well spent.
The album is a sci-fi lover's delights, featuring one-of-a-kind orchestral renditions of popular scores. Kunzel and company have outdone themselves with their performance on the rarely heard "The Menagerie: Suite", composed by Alexander Courage for the pilot episode ("The Cage") of "Star Trek". John Williams's "Superman: Love Theme" and "Star Wars: Throne Room" sound clearer and more majestic than in their original soundtrack forms.
Over fifteen minutes of the classical music heard in Kubrick's "2001" are presented here and that alone makes this an essential purchase.

GRRRREAT!!!.......2006-10-25
This CD and the first Heavy Classix are some of the greatest compilations of powerful brassy classical music ever! None of that wussy string concerto stuff, just plain gusto, the kind of music you want to play at top volume with the windows rolled down so everyone will know what kind of god you are. (IMHO) I LOVE this cd and so will you...they're hard to find nowadays...so get yours while you can!
Great introduction!.......2000-04-14
The Heavy Classix CDs were my introduction to classical music, and it was a very successful introduction. Beginning with 'O Fortuna' (which you might recognize from any one of several movies including Excalibur) and continuing through a number of high-powered tracks, some of which (Finlandia, Sorcerers Apprentice) might be familiar to you, Heavy Classix 2 and its companion Heavy Classix are great places to learn about classical music and dispel yourself of the notion that classical music is boring.

Hawkwind - 'Alein 4' (EBS/Distributed by Griffin).......2004-10-25
I was pleasantly surprized when I heard this CD at the time it first came out.A total of fourteen tracks, with the first ten being like a concept album. The four other cuts are extras,I guess, including two remixes of the 1978 Bob Calvert tune "Death Trap" and 1988's "Wastelands".The line-up here is:Brock,Alan Davey, drummer Richard Chadwick and(at the time)new vocalist/frontman Ron Tree. The opener "Abducted" and "Alein,I Am" get things started on this modern day space rock classic.Dave Brock's synth work really seem to shine through on this CD,as so does Tree's vocal performance. The tunes that I liked the best are "Reject Your Human Touch","Beam Me Up",the trippin' "Xemomorph" and "Sputnik Stan".You also get a twelve page booklet, that is sort of 'like' the Hawkwind-Alein handbook.Very cool.A fun disc to pull off the shelf every now and again to play.
How did it come to this?.......2004-05-14
"Aliens" truly called "Alien 4" is simply Hawkwind's worst album. Here is a summary of Hawkwind: 1970's - Everything Incredible... "In Search Of Space", "Hawkwind", and "Warrior on the Edge of Time" are flawless. 1980's - Different, but mostly very good... "Levitation" and "Xenon Codex" are amazing. 1990's -The earlier releases, such as "Space Bandits" and "Electric Teepee" were descent but do not match up to anything in the past. Then, "Palace Springs", "It's the Business...", and "Aliens 4" came and killed Hawkwind. It was a completely different band. No more classic "jams" and no more masterpeices. At least nothing even close to the epic track "Hurry On Sundown" from Hawkwind's first album. That song matches up to Zeppelin's "Going To California," "Babe I'm gonna Leave You," and maybe even "Stairway."
Anyway, what we all want is the "classic" Hawkwind, with DAVE BROCK SINGING. There's nothing better than the feeling you get listening to tracks like "You Shouldn't Do That", "You Know You're Only Dreaming", "Master of the Universe", "Brainstorm", "7x7", "Orgone Accululator", "Time We Left...", "Be Yourself", and "Psychedelic Warlords." Not a single track on Aliens has any relation to what Hawkwind was like in the 70's or 80's. Dave Brock doesn't even play guitar on half of the tracks. He focuses way too much on synth, keyborads, and weird techno stuff; yes, techno. Hawkwind dissapeared in the 90's because their music was garbage. I doubt it got any better since then.
This always, always happens. A band is great but after five or so albums they begin to lose their "sound", go mainstream, or get new bandmembers. "Alien 4" is like the "Coda" of Zeppelin. If only the best phschedelic rock band of all time could have kept delivering those classic records... If only Dave Brock could keep that original sound... By the time "Alien 4" was released, Hawkwind was dead.
If you're going to buy anything from the 90's, get "Space Bandits" and "Electric Teepee." If your then curious, get this album. I'm sure you'll listen to it for one day and then never open it again. It's so terrible.
I used to be a huge Zeppelin, Sabbath, Who, and Hendrix fan like many people are, but since i found Hawkwind... I've jumped from 60's/70's hard rock/rock n roll, to 60's/70's Pschedelic rock - mainly Hawkwind. Brock is a genious. Get every 70's Hawkwind album, then live 70's stuff, then 80's, then try 90's.
Hawkwind delivers another fine album.......2003-04-16
Actually the title of this album is Alien 4, not Aliens. Anyway, Alien 4 was released in 1995, by which point, the trio of Dave Brock, Alan Davey and Richard Chadwick was now augmented by a new vocalist named Ron Tree, which many praised as the second coming of Robert Calvert. Of course, being Hawkwind, don't expect a whole lot of surprises that you hadn't already heard on their other albums. This album is more or less a concept about aliens and alien abduction. The opening cut, "Abducted" really sends chills through your spine as, against an electronic background, Dave Brock describes the details of an alien abduction. After that, then you get in to the kind of Hawkwind music everyone is familiar with like "Alien (I Am)", "Beam Me Up", "Xenomorph", "Festivals", and a remake of "Deathtrap" (written by Brock and Calvert) that originally appeared on 25 Years On, the 1978 album when the band was briefly known as Hawklords. "Sputnik Stan" finds the band with a sense of humor with lyrics that go: "They call me Sputnik Stan/I view the Earth in a garbage can". And of course the album has its share of ambient and techno experiments, which was common for the band to do in the '90s, such as "Vega", "Kapal", and "Wastelands". "Vega" sounds like something off Electric Tepee. Overall, this isn't a bad album, and this will keep pretty much every Hawkwind fan out there happy, although when it comes for their '90s releases, I still think Palace Springs and Space Bandits are their best.
Greater than many of their recent albums.......2003-02-11
This album has all that any Hawkwind fan could want. At times this makes it seem slightly formulaic but you soon forget that when you're listening to great tunes like "Sputnik Stan" and "Festivals".
Many Hawkwind fans disklike this album on the basis that they didn't like Ron Tree's singing. I would disagree with this. Ron does a great job on songs like "Blue Skin" and "Xenomorph", this is the vocalist that they had been looking for for almost a decade.
Unlike many Hawkwind albums which feature reworkings of earlier material, the reworked numbers on here sound coherent. They're not pointless solo twiddly keyboard fiddling by Dave Brock either - they're real songs.
This album is representative of Hawkwind's work. Sit back and turn this CD on and it will take you on a trip around the galaxy.
a bit of a mess!!.......2002-08-16
When I first got this album in January of '96, I thought "oh boy! a concept album
about aliens! how unoriginal! how dated!" then what movie comes
out during the summer of 1996 and becomes a big hit? INDEPENDENCE
DAY! Still, being a HUGE HAWKWIND FAN, I was still excited when
I bought this, it being their first studio album since IT IS THE
BUSINESS OF THE.... .
Well,...this album is a bit of a mess! If parts of IT IS THE
BEESWAX OF THE FUTURE sounded like outtakes from ELECTRIC TEPEE,
then alot of this sound like leftovers from IT IS THE..... I can't recall all of the song titles, but much of this sounds like
mindless jamming and the songs aren't that strong. New vocalist
RON TREE sounds like BOB CALVERT on twice the LDS and he's no-
where near the singer CALVERT could be on a good day. DAVE BROCK
was always this band's best vocalist and indeed, his vocal per-
formance on ALIEN(I AM) is the highlight of the album and the
main reason I'd recommend the album to HAWKWIND fans. His vocal
on this song is very emotional and almost heartbreaking and is
the most melodic moment on the album. For the rest, we get several Hawkwind covers, in DEATH TRAP and WASTELANDS;.and ARE YOU LOSING YOUR MIND is a rewrite of IRON DREAM. There are some nice moments here and there and the jams do work once in a while and there's lots of synths and keyboards, but for the most part, they've done
all of this before and done it much better. Still worth a tiny
little listen, tho'.

Album Description
75 minutes of the best music from the three fabulous Quatermass films (there were four total), 1956's 'The Quatermass Experiment', 1957's 'Quatermass II' and 1967's 'Quatermass & The Pit'. The sci-fi horror series revolves around the aftermath of a lethal extraterrestrial fungus brought back to Earth by the sole survivor of an outer space expedition. Pressed on a picture disc, it includes a 16 page booklet and features both Tristram Carey's original electronic score, as well as James Bernard's orchestral scores. Standard jewel case.
