Good Christian Metal.......2007-06-12

Mainstream metal music in the 90s was much less cheesey than the 80s version, bands like Winger, etc. This debut album by Slaughter is pretty cult because as a kid I neglected that most people don't watch MTV. This went platinum I guess. The highlights are the singles Up All Night and Fly to the Angels but as a whole the album is not bad as the filler, openers, singles and closer are well crafted and nost just chesse on a lair of chesse like Winger. This was one of the first hit metal albums of the 90s, versus rap and hip hop whose own popularity and credible legacy are in doubt. They're really coming down hard on rap and hip hop in college and students known to own a lot of rap albums are known to be expelled. Metal isn't controversial any more, it's a testament of popularity.

I remember getting this when it was in album form back in 1990. I loved it then and I still love it now. A major staple in anyone's music library, especially for the "hairband" generation. Great songs with extremely catchy hooks and songs you can listen to over-and-over again without getting tired of them. Highly recommended!

Sappier than I expected, but the Hard Songs Still Kick It!.......2007-01-03

I picked this up after having listened to Slaughter's singles for years. I figured I'd get it instead of a best of compilation since most of their hits were on this album. While there were a few hard songs I'd never heard that made the purchase worth while, the ballads are to sappy for this metal chick. If you're into '80's metal, and like having albums, it's a definite buy. But really, the only songs you can raise your fists to are:

Mad About You
That's Not Enough

Fly to The Angels is a classic, perfect ballad. She Wants More is a bit obnoxious if your a girl, because it's about a girl who wants to burn all of her guy's cash. But seriously, songs like Desperately and Spend My Life are nauseating.

Still, Slaughter's great and I'm still trying to find a decent copy of the Mad About You video. I don't regret the purchase, but really, I didn't know Slaughter could be so... sappy.

Another bad hair day...........2006-06-14

You know if the band has a name like "Slaughter", and the album is titled "Stick it to Ya", you are in for a treat. Regardless of how talented some reviewers claim this folks are, the truth is they recorded mediocre music that was easily disposible. You can blame grunge and alternative all you want for killing this band, but the truth is that they faded away rapidly for a real good reason...their music was not any good. This album is just as good as an example as anything else in their catalgue of the slick, hard rock garbage that was polluting the airwaves in the late 80's, early 90's. There is no real substance here... you can place this CD along with the Warrant, Poison and Winger disks sitting in the discount, used pile. If you must have it, don't bother buying it here. There is always a copy collecting dust at any used CD place, so you will not havew any trouble finding it. Thank goodness Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden came along... otherwise, the hard rock scene of the nineties would have been unbearable.

The test of time is probably the most important stat when it comes to how good a record is. This record I believe has stood the test of time. Released 15 years ago, most of the songs here are predictable and not original, but haw many artist are?

It seems to be that the general public have not been kind to bands like Slaughter, Mr. Big, Extreme, Firehouse, XYZ, and Winger. While everything before it (Motley Crue, G-N-R, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and Van Halen) and everything after (nirvana, Peral Jam, and Counting Crows) are reveared today. Do you really think any of those bands are better then the afore mentioned? If you are now between the ages of 27 and 32,(I'm 30) you may be the few people that loved those late 80's early 90's bands that had talent. it is a shame there is not more of us. but I regress
Stick it to Ya had a sound that really was different. It really didn't sound like 80's hair bands, but it wasn't new either. Dana Strum's Bass maybe the reason for this. He is a Bass player that probably should have been a guitar player. Mark Slaughter's Vocals, albit annoying at times are still professinal. Of the 15 track here, most of the fisrt half (Eye to Eye, Burning Bridges, Fly to the Angle) are classics no matter what the average Coldplay fan will tell you. The second half of the disc can start to sound like filler at times. Mad About You, and Desperately are the stand out tracks nearing the end of the CD

I followed Slaughter into the 90's and would attend shows where maybe only 100 people would show up and the band would always put on a good show and sign fans CD's and pictures afterwards.

If you have any doubts about getting this disc, do so. It maybe the best $5.00 you spent

I didn't buy this until late 94 or 95, I knew Slaughter from the later days of Vinnie Vincent Invasion. I saw the video of up all night, fly to the angels and then mad about you. Corny, cheesy, but that was the days of what hair bands were pertrayed by the record companies. This CD still does it for me when I listen to it. In my collection, that I burn the originals to blanks and my ipod, this is one band that I made sure that I had on there. These aren't just cheesy lyrics, they are sometimes life experiences. Fly to the angels came out as a single at the hight of American Teen Suicide and that because their anthem song for suicide although I truly don't think that they knew how popular the song would be when the wrote, but thank God that it isn't in all the add commercials that you see now. I own all their cds and to this day, i pull them out and play them. 10, 20, 30 yrs from now, i'll probly still play them and listen to them and educate those before me on how real music, musicians should sound like.

A solid classic metal release from the early nineties.......2005-05-01

Stick It To Ya (1990.) Slaughter's first album.

In the mid-late eighties, Mark Slaughter and Dana Strum were fairly well known for their roles in the Vinnie Vincent Invasion, a group formed by the former KISS guitarist. But obviously the Invasion disbanded late in the decade. Slaughter and Strum were not ready to stop making music though, so they decided to form a new band, appropriately called Slaughter. Recruiting Tim Kelly and Blas Elias, the foursome went into the studio and cut their first album, 1990's Stick It To Ya. How does the group's first album measure up? Read on for my review.

I feel bad for Slaughter. Like Warrant, Winger, and Extreme, Slaughter was a talented classic eighties-style metal band, but they came onto the musical scene too late. By the time these bands started making music and gaining somewhat of a following, the alternative/grunge rock movement of the nineties pretty much caused all of these so-called "hair bands" to fade into obscurity. Why was this bad? Because these bands played damn good music! These groups were actually some of the finest players of the genre. Slaughter's first album is probably their best, as you will hear many a review tell you. The band's two biggest hits of all came from this album - the classic metal anthem Up All Night, and the classic power ballad Fly To The Angels. What's really interesting is that with the latter song, the band gives us both an electric and acoustic version! The other songs weren't terribly popular, but are stil very good songs. For the most part, Slaughter proved to be one (...) of a band, it's just too bad the whole grunge movement destroyed any chance of them ever gaining any widespread popularity the way bands like them in the eighties did. I will admit, though, that while this is some excellent classic-style metal, it is nothing revolutionary to the genre. The songwriting is, in my mind, average. Still, what was average to the classic metal genre is now well above average compared to all the crap that floods the modern-day music mainstream. If you're a fan of classic eighties-style metal, Slaughter's debut album is worth your time and money.

If you haven't bought this album yet, make sure you get the new remastered edition. The new version of the album gives you bonus tracks that weren't on the original pressing and expanded liner notes, making it all the more appealing. If you've got the original it's not worth buying the album again for the sake of the bonus tracks, but if you don't own the album yet and want to get it, this is the way to go.

Why did Slaughter never really gain the proper respect? The only answer to that question is the one that times change. Because the public got so into the grunge thing, all of these latecomers to the classic metal genre would never get the credit they rightfully deserved. Fans of classic metal, don't overlook Slaughter (or any of the other classic metal bands of the late eighties/early nineties.) Doing so could be the biggest mistake of your life if you're a fan of the genre!
