This is early vocal music very much in the style currently heard in groups like the Hilliard Ensemble and Tallis Scholars. It is very spacious-sounding and solemn, which makes sense- most of the music that we have preserved from hundreds of years ago was written for use in the church. Fortunately, the gravity of the works never stops this set from being thoroughly enjoyable, too. Archiv's sound is, as always, very good.

This recording remains a classic, even if (as Daniel Leech-Wilkinson points out in his accompanying notes) some of Munrow's performance practices may be disputed today. This is, quite simply, a wonderful performance and a terrific sounding recording (even after nearly 30 years)--and a wonderful way to develop an ear for the music of the 13th and 14th centuries.

I've only just listened to a few samples of this album, and I, too, strongly disagree with the poor review below. Vivien Ellis has a wonderfully sweet soprano. As for the men, well, classically trained singers hardly existed in the 12th and 13th Centuries (unless you sang in a monastery). That's what makes this album sound so authentic. Everyone sounds so REAL. 4 stars from me - good album, but not really outstanding. Still, I could fall in love with Vivien Ellis' voice pretty fast. Nice work!

I have to disagree with the poor review below. This is a WONDERFUL CD of medieval music, and I have many to compare it to! The instrumentals are light, fun and cleverly arranged. And I love the vocals. They're perfect for this style of music - clean, clear, and sometimes folksy. Vivien Ellis's soprano is lovely. The nasal intonation of the men on a few of the numbers (and it is not extreme--I've heard it done much stronger) reflects a choice some early musicians make based on the remnants of this music that still exist within the modern folk music traditions that descend from it. Give this gem a chance and you won't be disappointed. It's a joyful and refreshing trip into the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, with elements both gently alien and pleasantly familiar. I play it over and over again and have not yet tired of it. Happy listening!

The only reason I give this album a rating as high as two stars is because I love the music, because the instrumental pieces are great, and because it's always a pleasure to hear the delightful voice of Vivien Ellis.

But who told the guys, who are skilled instrumentalists, that they could sing??? The tenor sings flat, the baritone is totally drowned out by the tenor, the bass seems to be just going through the motions, and they all seem to sing through their noses. Skilled instrumental musicians they may well be, but these guys obviously don't have much training or experience in any kind of singing. The complex rhythms and precise tuning necessary for this kind of music seem totally beyond their current capabilities.

If this album had been done by anyone but the Dufay Collective, the Chandos A&R representative would have promptly sent the demo back to them with a form rejection letter. The guys may have talent as vocalists, but before they try to promote themselves as singers I would recommend that they get some voice training, do a lot of practicing and get some performing experience. Only then should they try to cut another album where they sing. Boys, for now at least, let's stick to the instruments!

    This to me is the only Motorhead LP that matters. Of course I'm a big Pink Fairies nut so that might be it. You get Larry Wallis from the great Pink Fairies on guitar. It sounds like the Pink Faiies if Lemmy had joined up in '75. Anyway a great greasy slab of drunken Hell's Angel biker rock. Rock on.

    Get THIS cd cover (white, w/ black pig/motorhead logo) i had the unfortunate luck to get the other one with Lemmy on it which in all fairness is least cooler of the two, with that out of the way let me just say that a huge Motorhead fan this isn't Motorhead. It's good, but it's like the Yardbirds decided to make an album for the Hell's Angels - it's just a little off. Albeit it doesn't have Philty Animal or Fast Eddie - that's the main problem - but it's good to see that before ACES, before BOMBER and before OVERKILL Motorhead just ON PAROLE

    Originally released in 1979,as this reissue sure took LONG enough to finally get put out on CD.That's okay.We can't expect EVERY cool lp to be available on compact disc,pronto.Can we?Worthy reissue of the album's original nine in-your-ugly-ass-face tunes,plus four(4)bonus tracks added,of alternative edits of the title cut "On Parole","City Kids"(also like Pink Fairies version of this song),the band's namesake "Motorhead" and "Leaving Here".Vintage British '70's metal that you simply don't want to be without.Recommended.

      I listened and was again enchanted by Kiri's voice. She would have been the Anna Netrebko of her time. I did experience her in 2 live concerts and have vivid memories how beautiful she looked matching her singing.

      In a compilation of arias from opera roles that "might have been", Dame Kiri shows us that she could have expanded her repertoire much beyond what she actually did. Most of these arias have been sung and recorded by Dame Kiri on other recordings, and in concert videos. Some arias are from operas she did perform.(Die Zauberflote) Her clear, beautiful tone stands alone in the realm of the soprano. Some may sing for a few
      years, but not over thirty and do it so very well.
      The portions of the DVD were well chosen. This mostly long forgotten Mozart concert video was out of print and a gem.
      The use of "Exultate Jubilate", "Porgi Amor", and the "Dove Sono" personify Dame Kiri's affinity with the work of Mozart, and bring new life to an old concert. The only downside is that there were only the three pieces on the entire DVD.
      Overall, the CD includes all of the composers Dame Kiri is most associated with, and a few she is not as much known for. I
      highly recommend it to anyone who is an admirer of the great soprano.

      This is not a compilation, this is the first Motorhead album. This recording predates "Motorhead". Its a great album & you aren't a Motorhead fan if you don't own it.

      Genetic Wisdom play a sort of metallic hardcore (not sure if you could call it metalcore)with heavy use of syncopated drum/guitar riffs ala Fear Factory. Fans of early Prong or Helmet would find good value here. By no means a must have, but the perfect candidate for budget shoppers looking to add depth to their collections.

        "On parole" is Motörhead's debut album although the record company didn't release it till the band's career took off a couple of years later on. This album is without doubt the most non-Motörhead sounding, but it's a very good effort. "On parole" includes the classic tunes "Motorhead" and "Iron horse" (a slower but amazing version compared to the faster live versions recorded later). Lemmy & Co also do a great job with the cover "Leaving here". I'd say that the material, which by the way is far more rock than metal, is rather good all the way. But beware - if you love "Sacrifice" this is perhaps not for you.

        Out of Motorhead's absolutely colossal body of work, this, their first album, is the most unique. Why? Because... it sounds like The Who. I guess back in 1976 they hadn't quite found that hard 'n' heavy and above all LOUD sound that later became their trademark. No, most of the material on On Parole really does sound a lot like the typical British pop/rock of 1965, before the days of heavily overdriven guitars. Light distortion (I could swear the guitarist was playing a Rickenbacher. Maybe he is... I mean, Lemmy always has) and a very simple, dry production mix. It really, really does sound a lot like The Who. The cover of Leaving Here only seals the deal. Not quite as euphoria inducing as their later albums, but still I would think this belongs in any serious Motorhead collection.
