If you're a died-in-the-tie-dye fan, you've probably already heard a tape of this show and will be pleased to know that here it sounds amazing; the entire three hour performance is included, mixed and mastered off of original 16-track live master recordings. If you're not already a Deadhead, Live at the Cow Palace: New Years Eve 1976 is an excellent encapsulation of mid '70s Dead. Recorded in-between 1975's invigorating Blues for Allah and 1977's dreadfully myopic Terrapin Station, it's eminently preferable to the live album Steal Yr Face, and goes a long way towards showing that the critically-maligned Godchaux era had a lot going for it. A few of the songs lumber a bit, but there's a real funkiness and versatility to this segment of the band's career that they never really had at any other time. Several stages of the band's career converge, such that the elastically funky version of the late '70s Dead, the almost jazz-fusion Dead of the early '70s, and the soft cowboy folk sound of 1970 of are all here. It's lovely. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful ending for 1976.......2007-05-29

First 2007 release of the Grateful Dead (I hope there's more to come). "Live at the Cow Palace" features the complete show The Dead gave on New Year's Eve 1976. Nicely "digipaked", this set also includes a nice booklet with interesting liner notes which focus on (of course) the band, but also on the history of the Cow Palace. These notes point out the bad acoustics of this big hall, but forget about that for this set is beautifuly recorded and the sound quality is simply superb. All the instruments are clearly heard and the sound is certainly warm and tremendously enjoyable.
As for the performance, The Dead were surely inspired that evening. Let's take a brief look at the contents of this 3-cd set.

The first set, as it has happened with The Dead before, proves to be the less interesting. It starts off with "Promised Land", which is nice but doesn't say much. "Bertha" is played more slowly than the classic "Skull and Roses" version. "Mama Tried", in contrast, is played in a more hurried pace than on the aforementioned record. Anyway, there are both nice to hear. "They Love Each Other" proves to be a real treat. It includes a very strong piano solo by Keith Godchaux, and the band sounds very tight. Unfortunately, the results are not the same with "Looks Like Rain", where the group make a couple of easily detectable mistakes, apart from sounding uncomfortable with the song. A nice "Deal" brings the things back together and set the mood for a magnificent "Playing In The Band" which includes, as you can imagine, an extended, pure-beauty jam where everybody flies freely.

1977 started in Winterland with "Sugar Magnolia", and the second CD kicks off. A faster-than-usual and splendid-as-always "Eyes of the World" continues and segues into one of the most wonderful "Wharf Rat" versions I ever heard (a song that is naturally beautiful made even more beautiful. Can you picture that?). After this sonic Eden, we are taken back to reality with some interesting yet more earthy "Good Lovin'" and "Samson and Delilah". "Scarlet Begonias" closes the second CD in its usual relaxed, lovely and cheerful manner.

The last CD takes off with "Around And Around", which usually sounds (to these ears) just plain fair. This version is not the case, embellished with a effective rhythm change in the middle and a fantastic segue into a outstanding "Help On The Way/Slipknot!". Jerry Garcia expands his talent all over, and the band enters into an ethereal landscape where he can speak freely with them in a classic telephatic-empathic-Grateful-Dead-type manner. All this beauty derives in a very short "Drums" and the time comes for a pleasant "Not Fade Away" to distract the listener's mind before a sublime and touching "Morning Dew". "One More Saturday Night" follows and the show finds its proper ending with "Uncle John's Band" (including some usual lyrics confusion) and a simply wonderful "We Bid You Goodnight".
Well, top-notch Dead, warts and all.
A great night of a tremendously talented ensemble.

Post scriptum:
I still can't find the reason for all that detraction against Donna Jean. Go on and loathe her while I enjoy her voice, I don't care.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome new release from the Dead archive.......2007-05-20

There was a period in the late 90s up to a few years ago that the Dead released live albums from their rich back catalogue, including the seminole "Dick's Picks" releases. Things have been much quieter in the last 2-3 years. Among other things, the Dead have turned over further releases from their back catalogue to the well-respected Rhino label.

"Live At the Cow Palace, New Year's Eve, 1976" (3CDs, 22 tracks, 191 min.) brings the 12/31/76 show in its entirety, and the band is generally in great doings. Contrary to many other Dead fans, I've always enjoyed the Godchaux era, and this is as good as any from that era. Set one is somewhat slow in building up, but I love the 20+ min. blowout of Playing In the Band. CD2 brings a great Sugar Magnolia>Eyes of the World>Wharf Rat>Good Loving, but the real jewel on this set is CD3, with a great Slipknot!>Drums>Not Fade Away. Uncle John's Band in the encore is the cherry on top of the cake. Just an great evening of great music all around.

I have usually been impressed with the job Rhino has done with reissued and back catalogue issues, and they don't disappointed me here. Excellent packaging, great liner notes, pictures, it's all here. Bottom line: is this an "essential" live recording in the Dead's output? Probably not, but it certainly is a most enjoyable and welcome addition to the live catalogue of the Dead.

5 out of 5 stars if memory serves me correctly.......2007-07-21

then this CD is from the Babylon By Bus tour (1976), which really jump-started Bob Marley's popularity here in the USA. Like Babylon, this is also a live CD, although it is recorded in a much smaller venue, LA's Roxy, right up on Sunset Boulevard, right next to The Rainbow, and down the block from the Whisky A Go Go. anyone who likes Bob Marley will enjoy this CD, every song is great.

4 out of 5 stars Gift for a good friend.......2007-04-08

I was pleased how quickly this CD arrived. It was a birthday present for a dear friend, so I haven't heard it yet, however, I'm sure it's excellent. After all, it's by Bob Marley.

5 out of 5 stars Long Live Bob.......2007-02-03

This is an awesome CD. Many hours of listening pleasure to anyone who purchases this product.

5 out of 5 stars Poetry In Motion.......2007-01-11

With the pace of the arrangements adding even more powerful meaning to the vocals and music, Bob Marley & The Wailers deliver an astounding concert before an appreciative audience in a small club on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California, during the Rastaman Vibration tour.

The pristine sound captures Marley at his poetic best, as his songs of protest & redemption draws the listener into the music. The performance touches the senses in highly subtle ways, which are uniquely found in Want More & No Woman No Cry. The vocal interplay between Marley & Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt tugs at your soul.

Even the obligatory - for American rock audiences - I Shot the Sheriff is delivered with an added punch. The extraordinary set (Disc One) culminates with Rat Race, with the band returning (Disc Two) for an encore of 28 minutes; Positive Vibration and Get Up Stand Up/No More Trouble/War.

This is Marley the artist at the peak of his creative powers and one of the best live performances ever captured on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Best live album ever!.......2007-01-10

When I look at my music collection in its entirety, my favorite albums tend to be the live ones, recorded at small halls or large arenas (think DMB, Zeppelin, U2, Frampton, Stones, Doors, etc). There is something unique, exhilarating, and almost unattainable about capturing the greatness mixed with spontaneity of live music. Live at the Roxy is my all time favorite live album. Incredibly good sound quality, just the right volume of crowd interaction, and Marley's poetic, lyrical leadership at the peak of his grasp of the power of his message and sound all combine to make this concert a priceless jewel. If you're like me, you'll put this double cd set in your car stereo and leave it in there for weeks. Makes you want to grow dreads and join the cause.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars The title says it all.......2002-02-08

Stanley Clarke is simply the greatest bassist to have ever graced the earth with his presence. There are many other great ones(Manring,Wooten,Hamm,Jaco, etc.) but one thing that separates Stanley from the others is his compositional skills. The disc doesn't have a version of his suites but it captures all of the diversity that Stanley and his bandmates unleash during a show. The opener is "School Days". The form is the same as on the disc of the same name but live it is taken to another energy level. Ray Gomez lets loose and then Stanley defies the physical limitations that a person has. The speed and clarity is unreal. Then he cuts loose with some slap. The horn section gives this song even more power. More of Stanley's ability to bring out the funk are "Lopsy-Lu" and "Silly Putty". Anyone that plays bass should take notes on how the instrument should be played. The bass lines on these songs are two lessons in how to be funky. Stanley grooves on both tunes and the horn section is present again on "Silly Putty". "Lopsy Lu" finds Stanley exchanging fours with his bandmates. There is also an example of Clarke's acoustic grace on "Bass Folk Song". The piece is a duet with Stanley and his keyboardist. No one can play the upright like Stanley can. The same virtuosity that he displays on electric bass he has on an acoustic. The ability to play electric and acoustic with equal awe inspiration is another thing that separates Stanley from the rest. Also included on the disc are two RTF covers. "Dayride" features Jerry Brown on drums. "The Magician" is the other RTF tune and although the tune lacks Dimeola it is still phenomenal. No one has taken Jazz/Rock/ Funk/Fusion to greater heights than Stanley. His writing is a refection of his schooling and his Coltanesque sheets-of-sound bass technique is a revelation. The bottom line is this. If you are a bass player or you appreciate anyone that can take their instrument to unmatched heights then get this. It is the greatest one from the greatest one.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2001-01-22

This is one the greatest bassists ever in his prime. A MUST HAVE for all Stanley Clarke fans. A great supplement to the I Wanna Play For You album. I bought this so I could hear The Magician and he even plays it faster and with just as much accuracy as the Return To Forever version! Awesome work from Ray Gomez and Gerry Brown. The engineering is clear with great dynamic range and LOTS of bass from Stanley. An essential recording for bassists who wanna hear how to be a leader onstage

What an incredible recording! What energy, what a fantastic voice! The songs, many of which are rarely recorded, are presented in a wonderful upbeat and stylish mood. It's almost impossible not to love this CD. Her tributes to the greats of the silver screen are very witty and yet not overly campy. Judy manages to almost one up Carmen Miranda, with her Carmen Tribute. I must say I never really liked the song "Thanks alot, but no thanks" until I heard Judy's version. This CD will leave you exhausted but with lots of happy memories. It will also leave you wishing that Judy Kaye recorded more often!!

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous live document.......2007-02-01

I have a couple of Tosh shows live on CD; they are pretty tough to come by, at least in terms of concert bootlegs. I think I have one from '74, '78 and now this, which might be the best of the lot.

Tosh's Word, Sound and Power band must have been a helluva group to listen to live, and that comes across very well in this recording. Along the lines of a fellow reviewer, you really can almost see the herbsmoke wafting through the air and being pushed around by the fat thump of Robbie Shakespeare's bass.

The band feels very loose-but-tight on this record, as they skank through an instrumental intro and settle into the hypnotic groove of 'Igziabeher.' Using two lead guitars and two keyboards (unheard of at the time) allowed the band to enter a number of different moods when it suited them: full-on rock, with the guitars swirling around one another, heavy, heavy dub, with Robbie and the percussion taking over, as well as just plain old roots reggae, sending home Tosh's messages of African consciousness and equal rights as only one of the most powerful collections of musicians could.

I also enjoy this one because it's got some different songs than the usual Tosh set (you know, 'Legalize It,' 'Ketchy Shuby' ... they're great, but they're on EVERY live album). No 'Legalize It' here, and there is the addition of 'Mark of the Beast' and 'Babylon Queendom,' along with slower, more-psychedelic versions of my favorite Tosh anthems, 'Stepping Razor' and 'Burial.'

This one is crucial, crucial roots.

5 out of 5 stars Reggae at its best.......2005-03-06

Marley may hold the crown, but Peter Tosh was a king in his own right. Many have argued that Tosh represented the grittier, rougher side of the music, in contrast to Marley's more accessible sound, and this is not far from he truth. But Tosh had plenty of catchy melodies to offer as well.

As live documents go, you don't get any better than this: the sound makes you feel like you are really there in the club... you can almost smell ganja smoke coming out of your speakers! And the songs, a little slowed down from the studio versions, lose none of their vibrancy. In fact, some of them benefit from the slower, longer delivery.

As an overall aural picture of the reggae sound, this is a fantastic example for neophytes and devotees alike. It is also a phenomenal live recording of a rebel in his prime.

5 out of 5 stars Recognize this classic... audience with a prophet.......2004-03-04

First, the band. Word, Sound, and Power is the name and that's exactly what they bring. With Sly and Robbie as the best ryhthm section in reggae, 3 guitars, and 2 keyboards, the sound is so full and powerful that I struggle to find a comparison. The are technically magnificent and the simmering fury that they play with comes right through the speakers.
Next, the vocals. Do not believe they are inferior. Tosh is singing with emotion, conviction of his beliefs, and power. He is singing for an audience, not the studio, so the vocals won't be "perfect". Forget it. The pure power of the performance more than makes up for it.

A must buy for hardcore fans. A should buy for those interested in hearing great live music that will move you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs Performed By A Great Band.......2003-05-31

In my view, though Peter Tosh composed some great songs, they don't seem to be captured well enough on his studio recordings, even "Equal Rights". When I want to enjoy Tosh at his best, I turn to "Captured Live" and to this recording. Instrumentally, this is simply amazing- great songs performed by a great band. The only slighty weak point here is the vocals- Tosh's own vocals are quite good, but the backing vocals don't match the harmonies of the Wailers (before or after Tosh's departure).

5 out of 5 stars Peter Tosh the Great.......2002-01-30

This is a must have live cd. If you like live music you will love this cd!!!!! As you listen to the cd, you can imagine yourself in the concert. You can hear the crowd cheering in the background after the songs. This version of "whatcha gonna do" is the best version of that song I heard so far. This is a must have cd regardless if you like bob marley or peter tosh.

5 out of 5 stars Knowledgable Blackmore fanatic, Dusseldorf 9.27.76 Best live Ritchie of this era that's been recorded .......2007-02-27

I have been a Blackmore fanatic for 30 years, have attended his brithday party, have helped with promotions, have seen all the line ups. This "Dusseldorf 9.27.76 show is smokin..Ritchie is very on. Tony Carey contributes here..he had a "sound"...he was the right guy for the Dio era Rainbow..he knew how to use the analog synths..and had an identity which many do not. Compare his great work on this disc to the sad and boring playing of David Stone on the DVD. No comparison. If you want the best perfomance of this version of Rainbow get this particulr show of the three being released. It's worth the $ Now, if only they could find Castle Donnigton with Graham Bonnet..Ritchie was demented that night.

5 out of 5 stars Live in Germany 1976 _ R Cordisco.......2007-01-30

If you love Blackmore & you love Rainbow you must have this package, the sound is outstanding its "Classic" Rainbow. The packaging alone is worth it. If you liked Rainbow Live you will LOVE this. I hope somewhere there is some video of these shows lying around.

5 out of 5 stars A TRUE CLASSIC GEM! .......2006-07-31

It's about time this music has seen the light of day! This line up Rainbow is by far the CLASSIC! Blackmore/Dio/Powell/Bain/Carey deliver, and deliver hard! 3 great shows, and athough pretty much the same setlist, each show has its special moments, and it is well documented you never know what kind of nght your in for with Ritchie, whether he's in a mood or not, Blackmore never seems to disappoint. Each show varies, but Ritchie simply rocks! Ronnie, whom i consider one of metals best vocalists sounds fresh and in command. what can be said of Cozy Powell that hasn't already been said, just a great rock drummer! This boxset is a MUST for any fan of Rainbow, hardcore fan or not! it took 30 years to see these shows released complete, well worth the wait...it is a shame us die-hards had to wait this long, but now we have it to enjoy forever! Rainbow rules!!! only one other thing to say, BUY THIS! a little pricey, but WELL worth it!

5 out of 5 stars German Tour box set.......2006-07-30

Great concerts! All three. But one of the second two and i can't remember which one is clearly edited!

5 out of 5 stars blackmore at his best.......2006-07-23

I was extatic to see this release. there are 3 shows from germany and all three are fairly different. buyer should note that material from both the 'On Stage' and 'live in 1976' albums are on these discs. that being said, the remixed shows give more depth to the music. each show is complete and unedited. it was fascinating to me to see how the band performed differently on different nights. the mood changes, variations in guitar intros and solos, and the ad-lib solo's from dio give the close listener a way to see how each artist had his own creative force during each show. this gives a very similar feel to 'live in japan' by deep purple; a 3 cd set of the different nights. i found this to be a real treat. the band sounds great. the closer 'do you close your eyes' disappointingly does not appear on the second set. bottom line:

buy this if:
1. you are a hardcore fan.
2. want to hear the shows the way they were actually played (note, 'on stage' edits/deletes parts of some songs and completely deleted stargazer; the songs are also out of order).
3. want to hear how the band played each show on a given night(note, 'live in 1976' gives the correct order but switches nights to get the 'best' versions on to one double disc).

don't buy if:
1. you are just getting into the band (my suggestion would be to try out 'live in 1976' first and go from there).
2. if you want to hear 'long live rock and roll' played live instead of stargazer (get live in 1977).

hope this is helpful, Burrn!

      5 out of 5 stars from a TG fan..........2006-10-13

Great live recording from the one true original pioneer of industrial music. 100% assault on your senses, this is truely an amazing document of TG's might and sonic power. The sound quality on the live series cd's is excellent, you won't be disappointed.

If you are in a budget and can't afford the expensive box set, the TG Live series is a an excellent buy for fans old and new. Collect them, I have, it's all worth it.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite T.G. recordings..........2005-04-15

This is a phenomenal recording. Throbbing Gristle has numerous note worthy recordings, but this one just tears you apart and stitches the pieces back together. It's beautiful.

Certainly, "Very Friendly" and "No Exit" are absolutely horrific creations, and I mean that as a compliment. Trust me, you've never heard and/or experienced anything like what this band creates. Simply put, Throbbing Gristle is a horror movie without the visuals.

This band affects you. The sounds and the lyrics will challenge your sensibilities. However, Throbbing Gristle, in my ever so humble opinion, is not about shock value. Everything I've heard by them,(and I have seven of their CD recordings and two VHS recordings), is firmly based in the brutality found on this Heathen Earth.

With this recording, you are initially slaughtered with violence and disturbing images of raw hatred and anger. Then, you are carefully guided to a more serene place that allows you to recuperate from the initial onslaught.

This is industrial, very hard industrial. Buyer beware...
