    5 out of 5 stars Cool.......2005-08-24

Dio is one of my favourite vocalists of all time and this CD goes through most of the tracks on his best Solo album (Holy Diver), Dio also covers some of his classic Sabbath/Rainbow tracks. Well worth buying and playing loud and in the car at speed.

    2 out of 5 stars well, ..........2003-06-24

this is such a bland and sterile sounding album and let us not let our admiration for the elf take over. i am a dio fan
and i was so disappointed with this. Dio's voice is
still as always, superb but a live album isnt just about
the frontman, right? we have Tracy G's awful, uninspired
guitar playing, ruining the charm of "holy diver", "rainbow in the dark" , "I" and mainly every dio song with a solo in it. then we have vinnie appice; the guy plucks out the exactly same drum solo he played on black sabbath's "live evil", 16
years ago. come on, man! you can do better! Let's now wait for dio's rumored boxed set or some new live album that would include the latest two Dio releases.

4 out of 5 stars Rainbow in the Dark.......2000-02-06

After following Dio for twenty five years, this album catches the magic and personna of "DIO". Even after all these years, this album demonstrates the evolution and maturity of Ronnie coming into his own, while providing a broad history of his music. It captures his unique style of personal involvement with his fans, so lacking in todays' stars. While listening to this disc, I can close my eyes, and be transported to magical places of Knights in shining armor riding down ramparts to do battle with mystical dragons. Also, this disc brings up vivid memories of being part of a special event during his concerts. He makes each individual feel like he is singing to them personally. He truly does make you feel like your a intrigal part of the event. This disc also shows that Dio has "come" into his own. His voice has grown more strong over the years, and hasn't forgot his fans. The only draw back to this album of course, is that you want to here him play every song. He truly does make you feel like your a "Man on a Silver Mountain."

    4 out of 5 stars Fabulous........2000-01-24

Good live albums are hard to come by;some suffer from poor techical production, while others are mere greatest hits collections with the occasional drum solo;even when all is good, the singer runs out of voice murdering the songs. This is not the case here:for a live album, this is almost too good to be true-Ronnie in top vocal shape offers a treat to his fans, also spanning his career in Rainbow and Sabbath, while Tracy G.'s super heavy chops fit the material extremely well.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST LIVE ROCK COLLECTIONS.......2000-01-19

One of the best live hard rock CDs I've listened to. Great renditions of Rainbow, Sabbath, and Dio solo works. "Mistreated" and "Man on the Silver Mountain" are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Album.......2007-01-16

This is a sprawling two disc live set that if nothing else proves that at the end of the century Ronnie James Dio still has some of the best set of pipes in the business. The album was recorded on the "Angry Machines" tour, but looks back on his career with Rainbow, Sabbath and Dio. In fact he even throws in a cover of Deep Purple's "Mistreated", a song that he used to sing with Rainbow although it was not a Rainbow original. Probably my all time favorite Dio related disc is Rainbow's live "On Stage" album in which Ronnie totally won me over as a vocalist. This is not on a par with "On Stage", but it is a very strong live album. Most of the tracks are classic Dio with only one song from the "Angry Machines" album. In addition he performs Sabbath tunes "Heaven And Hell", and "The Mob Rules". There is also a surprising amount of Rainbow material with "Long Live Rock N Roll", "Catch The Rainbow", and "Man On The Silver Mountain" all represented here. On the down side there is a rather lame drum solo by Vinnie Appice, and a guitar solo by Tracy G. that is overly long, but for the most part the Dio band is tight and on the mark. The sound quality is also very good. All in all this is a very nice live album from Mr. Dio and company.

4 out of 5 stars A very strong live album, but not a classic........2006-04-29

One thing that Dio's solo catalog is missing is a truly great live album. Dio has no "Live After Death" or "Unleashed In The East" that stands as a monument like those albums do to Maiden and Priest. Fifteen years after Holy Diver, I think RJD started to regret this fact, as he has pumped out three full length live albums since 1998: "Inferno", "Evil or Divine", and "Holy Diver - Live". In my mind, all three of these live albums are very, very good, but none of them are quite "classic".

RJD's vocals are by far the strongest here on "Inferno", as he had lost some of his range and strength by the 2002 recording of "Evil or Divine". On "Inferno" you get to hear Ronnie sounding pretty much as he has since 1983, and hitting a lot more high notes than he does on the later live albums. The only drawback is that on "Inferno" he seems to sing in a less precise way, perhaps because this album is culled from multiple shows. "Evil or Divine" and "Holy Diver Live" both come from single concerts that were also being filmed: Ronnie seems to put a lot more effort into sounding good and staying close to the original studio vocals, and even though he has to struggle (especially on "Holy Diver Live"), he pulls it off and sounds great. At any rate, Ronnie's vocals on "Inferno" are still fantastic, and definitely more "young" sounding.

A lot of people have made a big deal about Tracy G's performance as guitarist on this album, and in my opinion it's very good. He has a really modern style that is all over the newer tracks that he co-wrote, but he sticks pretty close to the original style when playing the classics. The only major exception to that are his guitar solos, on which he makes very little attempt to recreate the originals. This may be good or bad for you, depending on your point of view. I'm okay with the changes; if I want to hear the solo exactly as it's played on the original album, I'll just listen to the album. If that bugs you, check out both of the later live albums, because Doug Aldrich is excellent at recreating the original guitar solos as they were played on the studio albums.

Overall Dio's band on this album is really solid; you definitely won't be wanting for heaviness! Check out the very end of the drum solo track, where Ronnie fecetiously tells the crowd he's going to play something "unplugged" before launching into the most brutally heavy version of "Heaven and Hell" you've ever heard!

Overall this is a very strong live album that most Dio fans should enjoy. If you love Ronnie's voice, you will be happy. If you weren't a big fan of "Strange Highways" or "Angry Machines", then I suggest skipping "Inferno" for now and trying "Evil or Divine" or "Holy Diver Live" for more of a "classic" Dio sound.

4 out of 5 stars Four things I want to mention..........2004-12-10

This review will encompass four topics: sound production, Tracey G on guitar, set list and Ronnie James Dio himself. There is quite a bit to say about this package.

The sound production of this CD set is really top-notch. You would be hard-pressed to find a live CD that sounds better than this. All the musicians are mixed well together, too.

Tracey G is a relative unknown. Dio is good at bringing on board guitarists of which the public has little knowledge (remember Vivian Campbell). I have read a lot about what people think of Tracey and that fans overall felt that he was not a good fit for playing older Dio material. I would have to agree with them in a way. He takes a lot of personal license, and in fact, completely changes the solos on virtually all the old Vivian Campbell pieces and makes them his own. Tracey has an awesome tone to his guitar. I'm not sure of his set-up or his pickups, but I am almost certain he's using one of the higher output Seymour Duncan's. I will find out. Also, he uses an extreme amount of Vibrato/Tremelo action, which is his signature. Some might say it butchers the melody of some of the songs. I would agree. Nevertheless, he is no "rank amateur" as someone said. He is very good, but chooses to use a ton of screaching pinch harmonics everywhere. He also doesn't play the open "E" chords that fill in the "Rainbow in the Dark" riff... Why? It kind of retracts.

The overall set list of the CD's is lacking on "Last in Line" material. Where is "Evil Eyes" or "Egypt The Chains Are On"? Why always play Black Sabbath tunes? Leave that to Black Sabbath.

Although I don't share Dio's worldview at all (I feel sorry for his troubled youth but that's no excuse), he is still a very classy individual. Here's what he says in one instance: "I know it's really hot out there (audience) and it's hard to get enthusiastic as you have been for every song, and I apologize for this, but still we need to do this song: THE MOB RUUUUULES!!". I had to laugh. Good show.

5 out of 5 stars super LIVE album!.......2004-08-19

everything is covered here Sabbath, Rainbow, and most of all DIO ! sang to pefection

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the best live metal cd out there.......2004-02-02

WHY DID THEY STOP MAKING THIS CD!? This has to be one of the best live metal cd's ive ever heard. The guitar is not overwhelmed by the crowd and the drums and especially bass are heard perfectly. Dio's voice is also sounding, even better than on his studio albums when he was younger. This includes all Dio/Rainbow/Black Sabbath hits that Dio made, LIVE all at one concert. Put this baby back into production!
