Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A cult recording!.......2007-03-20

Blue Oyster cult was one of the hardest and innovative bands of the middle seventies and early eighties. Their irreverent lyrics and outstanding letters was an invitation to make us think about a lot of issues expressed with wilderness conviction of an era in which nothing was like it seemed.

The powerful track dedicated to Joan Crawford, for instance, is a true tour de force, as well as my three favorite songs: " Veterans of the physic wars"- a true genial song -, the overwhelming version of Roadhouse Blues and "Dominance and submission" hovered by disturbing message that caught with pretty accuracy the deep despair of that age.

His sound was electrifying and challenging. So, if you want to feel and enjoy one of the supreme and solid rock bands of this period., go for this work, that will confirm once for all: Long live Rock & Roll !

5 out of 5 stars Another Great BOC Live Album.......2006-10-18

This album was recorded on the "Fire Of Unknown Origin" tour that saw the first cracks beginning to appear in the lineup. Original drummer Albert Buchard left (or was fired from) the group during this time and only appears on two tracks of this release. The rest of the drumming duties are filled by former drum tech Brian Downey who would continue as the bands drummer for the next few years. The original vinyl version of this album was a 2 record set, but appears on one CD. The album covers a lot of ground and serves as a nice overview of the band's career up to this point. The hits are here ("Burnin For You", "Godzilla", "ETI", "Don't Fear The Reaper") and all done well. "Reaper" especially comes of better than on the previous live version on "Some Enchanted Evening". Lot's of great album cuts are include here too featuring "Joan Crawford", "Dominance And Submission", "Black Blade", "Hot Rails To Hell", and the almost proggy "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars" complete with a killer guitar solo from Buck. The album also includes a cool cover of "Roadhouse Blues" with special guest Robby Krieger from The Doors. Overall it is another great live BOC album.

4 out of 5 stars Barely a four star rating... More like 3 1/2.......2006-03-15

A lot of BOC's stuff sounds better live then it is in the studio. The main reason for this is that their early studio recordings had poor production levels and sounded quite wimpy for a band that can be, for the most part, categorized as hard rock. But BOC is one of those bands, as well, who does some stuff really great live and other stuff is pretty horrible. I'm not going to get into great detail here, but I will simply rate each song based as it appears on this CD:

Dominance and Submission (8/10 way better than the studio version)
Cities on Flame (7/10 still better than the studio version, but never cared for the song much from the start)
Dr. Music (6/10 studio version is better but still pretty weak song; Great Sun Jester and Moon Crazy are way better songs off of "Mirrors" where are they on here?)
Red and the Black (8/10 good on both versions)
Joan Crawford (8/10 slightly better on studion version)
Burnin' for You (9/10 I rate it equal to the studio in it's own merits)
Hot Rails to Hell (6/10 way better on the studio version, this is sludgy and sucky... Mostly because of the awful drums used on this CD. When Rick Downey replaced Bouchard he wasn't as good and also brought drums with too much hallow effects, annoying).
Black Blade (7/10 better in the studio)
Godzilla (5/10 horrible live, way better in the studio; again, sludgy and slow version)
Veteran of Psychic Wars (9/10 great version, much better with Bucks long solo incorporated)
ETI (9/10 way better than the studio version, again)
Don't Fear the Reaper (8/10 just as good as studio version in it's own merits).
As a concluding remark, I am looking forward to receiving Tales of the Psychic Wars on CD because I suspect it's going to be a lot better than this and hopefully have remastered sound. I'll rate that when I get it. Stay tuned. That's all for now.

4 out of 5 stars makes you feel like your there.......2006-02-04

Black Blade, Dominance & Submission, are outstanding tracks....I was hoping for a live version of the Vigil, Great Sun Jester, and some tracks from Cultosareus Erectus. However overall it seeems like a combination of "On your feet" and the other live album"Some Enchanted Evening". Eric Bloom's vocals on this album is super, besides his performance on the songs mentioned already-"Vetreans of the Psyhic Wars is brillant, and Buck is still Buck, quite possibly the greatest guitar player of that time frame! This live album has incrediable amount of energy!

4 out of 5 stars 3000 guitars.. they seem to cry.... .......2005-12-22

How else may one describe the guitar work on "Cities on Flame"? The first 4 songs on this live opus are so intense, your ears will melt. A very good offering of live material from the early '80's. However, versions of "Don't Fear the Reaper" and "E.T.I" are better on the previous live "Some Enchanted Evening". Well worth buying, highlights include "Dominance & Submission", "Cities on Flame, Dr. Music, Red & the Black, Black Blade, Godzilla, Hot Rails to Hell. Turn this one way up and annoy your neighbors
