In the liner notes to Jamiroquai's debut album, lead singer and mastermind Jason Kay delivers a sincere, if oversimplified, screed about distributing the wealth and saving the rainforests. The lyrics follow suit: except for a single love tune ("Blow Your Mind"), Kay bemoans war, greed, racism, and conformity, or extols the power of music as a drug ("Hooked Up") or as a catalyst for social revolution. This is not Jamiroquai's most eloquent album, nor their strongest musically, what with most songs structured as long-form, open-ENDed jams weighing in at six minutes or more. Though interesting as a chronicle of Kay's musical vision taking shape, overall it's a document that will appeal most to Deadheads and jam-band fans. --Suzanne McElfresh

5 out of 5 stars Their first and best in my opinion........2006-02-27

I own all of Jamiroquai's cd's and i think most of them are great. This is absolutely my favorite to listen to straight through. I think the horns are amazing especially on "Hooked Up", and the percussion always ends up pushing the pace in a subtle way. This album just makes me move and I think JK and co. have so much raw energy. Stuart on Bass is sick sick sick straight through. "Revolution 1993" has become my favorite song by Jamiroquai -- love the lyrics, the message, the excitement, the tension/release, its just put together so well. "Music of the Mind" is a great instrumental track and shows off the jazz-rock-funk roots of what became the later disco-enhanced Jamiroquai. Sweet solos too, the keys are great. Also love "Too Young To Die" and "Emergency On Planet Earth". Impressive debut from a band, and it stands as one of my favorite discs.

4 out of 5 stars jamiroquai are soo cool!!!!!.......2005-11-08

this album is my first from jamiroquai, and i think this album is great!!! "when you gonna learn" and " too young to die" are great songs and "music of the mind" too. if you love and like funk music buy this cd!!

4 out of 5 stars Forget the Stevie Wonder comparisons...........2005-07-05

Jamiroquai, as it stood in 1991, was one of the freshest sounds to come out of the Acid Jazz movement. This record, though uneven at times was overshadowed only by it's ambition. 10 tracks, none under 4:50, and most well over 5 minutes all the while creating a conscious VIBE. That right that was something that the kids were not getting on the radio back in 1991, especially here in America where Hip Hop had finally pierced the brains of record executives as a financial reality. However, for those in search of something just as viable with musicianship to boot, how much did it feel like Christmas Day after just one listen? Yes, in the years since they have had better records, "Space Cowboy" & "Travelling Without Moving", also worse ones "A Funk Odessey", but for what it was worth they have been well worth following just for the music alone. No Jay Kay is no Stevie but who the hell is? If you should choose to listen to this record just listen as a fan of music and in the context of it being 1991 and what was going on musically at that time. Now if you pick up their other CD's you will find that as time passes and the original band starts to splinter that the music also suffers. In particular, when Stuart Zender's bass leaves prior to Synkronized, the band goes to a more Disco influenced direction. This, in my mind, is why Jamiroqual has never had the success stateside that Sony had gambled on back in '90-'91.

3 out of 5 stars Unexceptional.......2005-06-13

I like "Too Young to Die," but the rest of this disc is mostly just filler to me. The band channels the Stevie Wonder of the 70s and does a good job of emulating that funky vibe, but they don't really do anything original with it. In addition, most of the songs go on way too long, turning into jam sessions that become background music, unable to command my attention.

5 out of 5 stars got that space cowboy vibe kinda thang goin on.......2004-07-30

ROTSC is such a solid album. The production is very so smooth. Stuart does such a splendid job on bass, probably the best in his Jamiroquai years. Jay Kay does a great job as far as songwritting, it's apparent he had more than just a few hits from the bong though.

5 out of 5 stars a great neo-psychedelic classic.......2006-07-24

Oh, how pleased I am to have come across this band and album about a year ago. I was a fan of Mazzy Star at that time, and with the knowledge that David Roback was also related with Rain Parade, I thought this album would be worth a shot. This isn't really the trippy psychedelic rock but rather a band focused more on subtle jangle melodies. My favorites are "Carolyn's Song", "Look at Merri", "Saturday's Asylum", "Kaleidoscope", and "Broken Horse". Give it a try if you want something reminiscent of '60s psychedelic rock a little on the downtrodden side.

5 out of 5 stars shimmering summers.......2006-06-20

I remember listening to Explosions in 1984 after I'd just left school, it's summer I'm high Blue is playing, I'm happy. Great to see it rereleased with 3rd Rail. Been trying to find it in the UK for the past year or so.

4 out of 5 stars Austere neo-psychedelia: introspective & restrained.......2006-04-12

I'm old enough to have remembered this hometown band and I had bought the LP and EP when they came out--so, how have two decades and more effected my reception now to Rain Parade's sounds? A caution for anyone expecting from the CD title(s) some acid-drenched freakout. This is decidedly a bit narcoleptic--it lacks the full-blown (or bloated) effects that so many original (circa 1966/7) inspirations and neo-psych contemporaries piled on top of their winsome tunes. RP's more austere. Sort of like The Three O'Clock if they were less exuberant or chipper--or twee? Not as raucous as Salvation Army, but you can hear in RP hints of the earlier punk-pop scene in the three vocalists' untutored but determined delivery of downbeat lyrics.

The first six songs on this CD reissue, that is, the first half of the E3rdRail LP, sound in retrospect much like Opal, except with male vocals rather than Kendra Smith's dreamier, sleepy style. These songs tend to move contemplatively, with nearly no obvious pandering to a more pop sensibility or a poser's easy donning of the outward style without the secret attitude that marks true psych. Rather than provide glaring flourishes, they retreat. They hold back rather than release tension.

While other listeners have heard more baroque influences in these grooves, I do not: as I found way back in its vinyl versions, RP creates more ambience by suggestion rather than action. The music's quiet, and made for introspection, as the band's name portends.

The liveliest cuts come on side 2, the next five songs, that is, side 2 of the LP. These sound much more like a band playing Sunset Strip such as Buffalo Springfield, or the politer side of the emerging psychedelic LA pioneers. Janglier, more effusive, with vocals mixed more to the front, and plaintive if convincingly earnest musical and singing projection that appeals more to the pop side of this style. These are more accessible cuts than side one--a surprise that flips the usual sequencing of albums.

The final songs come from their later EP. This isn't the noisefest that the title seems to promise. The songs are more fleshed out with noticeably but still subtly more emphatic (although still restrained by comparison with many neo-psych bands) production and arranging. These last songs occupy a middle ground between the two styles on the LP, with a sound that settles down and blends the gloomier dirges with the peppier-poppish song-styles.

Fans of Opal and perhaps the later Mazzy Star might like this album, as it shows David Roback and company--many of whom backed the later bands (see also the Rainy Day side project, the RP's odds-and-ends Demolition LP, and the non-D. Roback remnants of the band shifting into Viva Saturn) preparing for their later reliance on narcoleptic female faux-folkish singers, Kendra Smith, in fact, is credited on one song here. This is the sound that sparked a decade or so of activity along the same doleful paths into the center of the haunted mind.

What RP has in common with later 80s/early 90s LA neo-psych is their concentration, and rather somber, self-important stance (which comes with any D. Roback-helmed record it seems). The band favors an often langorous, more swirling sound that deepens these musicians' trek into the mind more than the body, to mirror the interior, less obvious, effect of the SoCal pop-turns-psych 1966-7 sounds that, somehow, endured to re-surface with this band, beginning in the aftermath of punk and the accompanying stirrings of renewed countryish-indie-rock among those too young for hippies but old enough for early punk...and then branching out into the past 60s sounds to make them fresh again, around 15-20 years later after the groovy Sunset Strip era in LA.

5 out of 5 stars More Buffalo Springfield, less Byrds.......2005-12-23

A Rickenbacker guitar can make even a mediocre song sound good. In the case of the Rain Parade, their use of Rickenbackers made great songs greater. But I hesitate to agree completely with those who compare Rain Parade to the Byrds. It's an expedient born of the Rickenbacker 12-string. It's not that there aren't parallels, but the comparison doesn't tell the whole story. The best song on this album, in my opinion, is "I Look Around," which is more reminiscent of Buffalo Springfield than the Byrds. It is one of the finest examples of song-craft, emotional intensity, psychedelia, and '60s groovin' out there.

A previous reviewer suggested that if the Rain Parade were around today they'd be stars. I'm not so sure, though I certainly appreciate the sentiment. They had talent, integrity, and a sense of musical history: all of which seem to be the kiss of death in this age of predigested, re-regurgitated yuck that the mama bird record companies force down our throats.

In addition to the aforementioned influences, I'd like to think that the Rain Parade also took some inspiration from those teenage jam bands that would occasionally appear in the background at parties on My Three Sons or other '60s TV shows. There's a sense of appreciation on this album of trying to find that groove that was obviously not created by the band on TV, but by some unknown, unseen musicians who were told to play something groovy for the teenage viewers, but not to trip out too far. On the show, you see teenagers wearing penny loafers and hair-cuts that were like the Beatles' if they'd been Republicans, probably dancing the Watusi or the Jerk. In retrospect, it all looks so silly, but there's a groove in the music, narrow though it is, that bands like the Rain Parade, Three O'Clock, and the Dream Syndicate tapped into.

Williams's group Lifetime, which looked on paper like an organ jazz-funk trio, produced in 1969 this headlong hybrid from jazz complexity and rock immediacy. Williams, fresh from edging Davis towards his jazz-rock-soul period, concocts a driving, high-volume fusion that has more conviction and flare than anyone else's would until the advent of the great Mahavishnu Orchestra a couple of years later. That band was led by Williams's collaborator here, John McLaughlin, as blistering and savvy a guitarist as any jazz-rock saw. Larry Young's organ is a skirmishing juggernaut, clearing and blasting into space above, behind, beneath, and between the drummer's crashing, jittering rhythms. A cautionary note: To be sure, Williams's singing on Emergency! is brave, at best, but it is blessedly limited. --Peter Monaghan

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars three geniuses psychotic.......2007-04-10

the singing the playing is just flat out awesome and unsurpassed. People take the singing way too seriously. It was meant to be like that like McLaughlin's guitar bends. The energy is so violent. It's madness and fun at the same time. The recording is perfect. It's raw harsh distorted. If it was clean it wouldn't be the recording it is. And it was funny enough remixed in 1991 and it still sounds cruddy. it was recorded in a NYC 8 track home made studio...no not columbia. As my friend Dave would say this is the CUTTING. Also Tony's drumming doesn't get better than this.
The drumming on the lifetime recordings have endless ideas the cymbal riding the fills the tempos the tom fills the snare rolls that flow into the cymbals. His hi hat smashing during the playing at very fast and slow tempos. No one that Im aware of has had this energy and ideas flowing as a drummer. Larry and John and Jack same thing totally amazing off the wall playing. Ideas flowing almost unhuman. This recording is unbeatable.

4 out of 5 stars Before Fusion Was Pretty.......2006-08-12

Really messy, raw, recorded in two hours, no second takes. But the energy and balls the musicians display is undeniable.

The music is not pretty and is not for the faint of heart. Tony Williams, John McLaughlin, and Larry Young were fiercely, uncompromisingly original musicians when they did this.

4 out of 5 stars Visionary Trio.......2006-04-12

I hesitated to purchase this cd for years based on misleading comments about the sound quality. Finally relenting, I now own a copy and this remaster sounds great. The dirty sound has to do with the level of distortion chosen by John Mclaughlin and Larry Young on their respective instruments, and not with the sound engineering of the recording. Tony's drums sound excellent and are recorded with a good deal of dynamic range for 1969. The other reviews are right on concerning the musical content of this ground breaking release . It's a classic of the period.

2 out of 5 stars Who on earth recorded this?.......2006-02-13

As I look over the reviews for Emergency!, I notice that only one agrees with me. So, I'm writing my own review, just in case there's someone else who wonders if they're the only one who doesn't get it: You are not alone...

Tony Williams is one of my favorite jazz drummers, but when I heard this album for the first time 15 or so years ago, I could not get past the sheer horridness of the recording quality. I listened to it again not long ago, in a last ditch effort to see if I may have simply overreacted to the sound quality. I did not overreact. In fact, it sounded even worse than I remembered it.

The musicianship is fantastic - the band is truly made up of some of the greatest musicians of their day. One of the other reviews here make mention of the "avant-garde" sound of it. Personally, I have always equated the phrase "avant-garde" with the phrase "hot garbage," and unfortunately, no matter how much I want to appreciate Emergency! for it's musicality underneath the poor recording, I just can't seem to do it. I give up...

5 out of 5 stars Once In A Lifetime.......2005-11-15

Emergency!, and its companion, Turn It Over, are about as good as it gets. Completely groundbreaking when released, the sound is avante garde even today. Williams plays like a man possessed and McLaughlin, whose guitar virtuosity carries more purpose and funk than it would later in his Mahavishnu Orchestra work, has never been better. The third member of this unlikely trio, organist Larry Young, contributes enormously to the sound's uniqueness with smeared chords that appear according to some unfathomable logic, he is always surprising and interesting.

The Tony Williams Lifetime played so loud that on club dates Williams needed monitors to hear the drums. Hard to imagine just three people produced this tidal wave of music. The singing is forgettable, although not horrible. But the melding of rock, blues, and jazz is truly astonishing. This has been called the first fusion album, and it's true that Williams, along with McLaughlin, were, in collaboration with Miles Davis, at the very edge of fusion. Whether it's the first can be debated, what's indisputable is the way Emergency! raises the bar for rock and jazz, from the vantage points of technical excellence, daring, and sheer unbridled intensity. A must-have recording.

1 out of 5 stars I don't get it.......2006-08-07

A fellow music fan told me to give this a listen. I hated it

The songs are not melodic, thats a tough voice to listen to , the musicianship is nothing interesting. Its just weird music! I tried, listened to it like 50 times, but its just not good. I don't know, maybe I'm too old.

5 out of 5 stars Emergency & I is the pinnacle of 90's indie.......2006-08-06

After thinking about it for a while, i realized something. The Dismemberment Plan is really the perfect band. They tried as hard as possible to stay away from the muck that is the major label music industry, yet they were pretty well known and easily accessible. They were one of those bands that someone would tell you about, and youd buy their cd, and you would never regret it. They give you the feeling that you discovered something wonderful, and in a way, it belongs to you.

This CD is all of that and more. They allow you to ease in to their crazy sound with some straightforward songs like "the city" and "a life of possibilities." Yet the true genius lies in the more experimental songs. Gyroscope uses a time signature that i am not even going to try and figure out. "The Other Side" has chaotic bass and drums, but it all works together to create an incredibly mellow feeling. "You Are Invited" is my favorite on this cd. Its just the singer and a drum machine for most of the song, and its really all you need. I really reccomend that everyone gives this cd a listen. Even if you dont like this "genre" of music, you will definitely appreciate it for what its worth.

4 out of 5 stars this album makes me laugh.... in a really good way.......2006-05-05

i like this CD a lot. i downloaded it a few weeks ago, i know that i'm seriously behind the times. this is a band where the vocals make/break the experience for the listener. i've read a lot of the reviews here and they're pretty dichotomous: you either love or hate this album. the singer can be anywhere from coy to well... coy i guess. the lyrics all seem like they were delivered with a sort of smile and an unspoken request not to take them too seriously. i think that people CAN take music too seriously sometimes as well as art. i don't understand how someone could listen to a song that proclaims a lack of sex is going to lead to a nervous breakdown (girl o'clock) and still say the lyrics are "pretentious" and "poorly-written". musicians are people, they want to have fun, they have a sense of humor. this band is really unique, extremely fun and what can i say... i think we all know the Plan makes you want to open that car door in a freeway traffic jam and put some moves on the other gaping drivers.

i don't know what to compare this band to, i try not to bother with that. there's a lot of different elements in this from pop and punk, indie and even some jazz, grunge. but it's more of a well-crafted junk sculpture than a pile of dissonant crap. give it a spin, it's a really good CD.

5 out of 5 stars The D-Plan Rocks Me Like a Hurricane.......2006-03-13

So the guy that gave it a one star review, only had the album for two days. This record (like a lot of great records) is a slow grower, it takes repeated listens to really enjoy. I remember the first time i listened to lonesome crowded west by the mouse, I felt ill. I didn't have a place in my brain for the sounds i was hearing. This record is sort of like that, in that it is tough to understand on the first spin.
Anywho, Emergency and I is a great album. Just repeat to yourself, "I must listen to this record 9 times before formulating an opinion or i will get syphilis." and you will be fine

2 out of 5 stars my love hate relationship with this record.......2006-02-11

I truly want to give this album 2 and a half stars, but I can only give 2 or 3, and I don't think it deserves 3. There are parts of this record that I love, and that is what is so frustrating about it. Amidst the great moments there is a ton of filler and trite lyrics. The lyricist almost seems to care not a wit about what he's writing and the delivery is in general pretty laconic and awful. Then out of the blue, the singing becomes earnest accompanied by better lyrics and great catchy choruses. What gives? The song Gyroscope is one of my favorite on the album, and then at the very end, when it turns to just vocals, it is the worst and one of the most embarassing endings to a song ever. Why oh why did they sabotage themselves, or did they not even realize it? Are they trying to be cute? I honestly don't know, but it kills me because I love "parts" of songs on this record, but not entire songs.

Plenty of people have given this record 5 stars and seem to think that this band is the greatest thing in some time, and perhaps they are easier to please than I am, but I don't like half-baked material, and I find a good deal of the lyrical content and delivery of this record to be gutless.

5 out of 5 stars Quality Hip Hop.......2006-05-08

I've listened to all types of hip-hop, from hardcore (Lench Mobb, Ice Cube, Wu-Tang, Gravediggaz) to the pop rap on the radio today. I've only heard this one album of Cross Movement - they are talented. There is no disputing their belief and their teachings of the struggles of Christianity. Great beats, supreme lyrics, and just a quality ensemble. They blend diverse styles reminescent of the quality hip-hop of the mid-late 1990s.

3 out of 5 stars Rap Music That Actually Doesn't Completely Suck.......2006-01-31

In general I absolutely hate rap. Because I am not a fan of the style and a huge reason is because basically every single rapper or rap group have bad lyrics which is all rap has going for it besides the beats. And the beats are generally repetitive and get old fast. It's not just that the lyrics are bad, but that they're all the same, which is also why they suck.

However, The Cross Movement changes this and not only actually write good lyrics for rap (am I hearing right? This is a first), but believe it or not write some of the best lyrics I've ever heard (being a Christian I completely connect with them). And this is not just some stupid group that claim to be real Christians but probably aren't (cough cough, P.O.D., cough cough), they are for real I believe. Now I am much more for the music than for the lyrics but when it comes to rap which I generally hate, the lyrics are all that's going for it so it's the only thing I really pay attention to. I appreciate and love lyrics that are good or great in my opinion, but there is little of that around so I don't pay attention to that much (in rock mostly). But when it is there I am for the music AND the lyrics. If the lyrics suck I just block them out and listen to the music if I like it, but if I am going to listen to rap they must be good. And these are the only rap artists that I've heard that have lyrics with any real meaning at all so I respect them for that.

Whatever the case, it still doesn't change the fact that I am not into rap, hence the three stars. But it has got my attention nonetheless so I applaud them for it. So all you rap "fans" who claim to listen to good music with meaningful lyrics, I just have to say I doubt it, unless what you're listening to is something from The Cross Movement.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-01-23

Either way you look at it, The Cross Movement have pure talent and the right message to send.

5 out of 5 stars CM has been to the gym and has started to FLEX.......2005-01-22

As you can see from the list, I am a huge Movement fan. However, I am still impartial on the review. This CD really shows that versatility and depth that this group and their record label (Cross Movement Records aka "CMR") has. It's often that we find some Christian artists who are not able to deliver The Word and deliver the style of rap that grabs both belivers and non belivers. This is a delicate balance and in my opinion Cross Movement does this well. I say this because I know that I can pop this CD in with non-saved folks and I know that they will not only be like "DANG...THIS BEAT IS HOT!" but MOST IMPORTANTLY, they will say "WOW...they talkin about Jesus and it's not corny." Let's keep it real, this is how many view this walk that we are in. I like every track, but you will hear most folks talking about TRACKS 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, and ESPICALLY #17...I think that 17 is on fire.

5 out of 5 stars YOU GOTTA GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S SO REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-12-19

This is a fantastic hip hop cd and the fact that it's all for God's glory is even better. The beats, hooks, music and lyrics come together to make something dynamic. Though I love the entire CD I do have a few favorites: The Light(The Blazin One) is soooo HOT, Know Me (HuH What?) will get you bouncin and Creature Double Feature is sooooooooo for real and relative to everyone trying to live RIGHT. These guys cannot be denied.

5 out of 5 stars one of a kind.......2005-04-05

The best thing about this 2disc set is the inclusion of most of "It Is Finished", a solo disc unavailable for too many years. Nina's version of Kumbaya - a song that is often the butt of musical jokes, and deservedly so- in its reinvention here called "Come By Here, Lord" is alone worth twice the price of this collection. The folk fluff of the original is forever eradicated and in its place stands an ineffacable creation of epic dimensions, fired joyfully and defiantly by Nina's remarkable piano work. The genius of this woman is always undeniable, but there is an almost startling aspect to her transformation of the mundane here. I doubt Simone has ever essayed a finer version of Bessie Smith's "Sugar In My Bowl" - she and the audience both know it, and now so do we. The profoundness of Nina Simone's burning humanity is present in virtually every track on these two CDs. You can only add increase to your own by listening to these recordings, no matter what you might think your musical interests are.

5 out of 5 stars Really, genuinely outstanding........2005-03-26

There is no way that any review can do justice to what is captured within this double album. I would simply emplore you (as I do my friends)to shut up, sit down, and just listen to this woman.

I got this album on Christmas morning. It was the first of the CDs that I received, that I put on, and I didn't move until it was finished. I sat and shivered in my pyjamas for the length of the whole album. Never have I been so amazed by a live album. Never have I been so envious of the audience that was actually there for the recording.

If ever there really was, earth-moving, soul-stirring stuff, then this is it. It is an out-pouring of 30 years of pain, anger, suppression, damage and resilience. The full brunt of Nina's harsh life are brought to bear here, she spits and hollers it at you, you feel her pain, and of those around her. There simply is nowhere to hide from her fervent admonitions, her knowing recriminations, or heartbreaking pleas.

The opening song 'My Sweet Lord', is nothing short of amazing, and is worth the price alone. One must remind yourself that this is a live performance every once in a while. It is the High Priestess in full swing, operating on a higher plane as she desperately complains about the speed of Divine revelation. No one, bar Nina, could carry this off as she does here. It is a masterclass, in genuine soul, grit, determination and purpose. It showcases an ability that could not be learned in a fame school, or television programme, but that is articulated somwehere deep inside of her, and is then served up in the most bittersweet key of life.

There are no bad songs here. There are a lot of very good songs, and some stand-outs, in particular, Isn't It A Pity, Com' By H'Yere-Good Lord, Dambala, Obeah Woman and Who Knows Where The Time Goes. Through them a wide gamut of styles, influences and emotions are represented. Throughout them all however, Nina is nothing less than inspiring, never anything less than the High Priestess.

It has often been said, but this is soul food. This is pain and human experience served up on a plate with such an intensity and capability that it is heart-breaking. Sentiments delivered through such a filter of experience, that only the most intense, the darkest, and most moving can make it through. I cannot recommend this album highly enough. If you buy it, you will be glad you did, even if not immediately, trust me, you will be glad some time. It is a travesty that Nina is as little known as she is, she deserves to be recognised for what she is. So buy this, be amazed, and tell your friends to buy it. It is a truly tremendous album.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Best...........2005-02-20

if you find yourself here, on this webpage, looking at this CD collection, you're clearly already a fan of nina simone, or at least have a healthy interest in her music. all i can say is, please, for the love of God, buy this collection. these three albums might be some of the most riveting, wrenching records in the history of the medium. never have live recordings been so pure and raw. the 18 minute-plus rendition of 'my sweet lord/today is a killer' ALONE is worth the price of admission. trust me, you won't regret it. buy this album.

The marriage of pop and punk is not new, but rarely is it executed with the charm and wit exhibited by the Promise Ring on Very Emergency. With sweet 'n' crunchy tunes chug-chug-chugging away, the Promise Ring write music that is instantly hummable and as easy to love as a tail-wagging dog. --S. Duda

5 out of 5 stars The epitome of what pop should be!.......2003-12-18

The TPR's third album "Very Emergency" is just littered with catchy pop sounds, just like "Nothing Feels Good" but to a much higher degree! I have this on vinyl and all the songs on side one(first five tracks) are some of my favorite songs to sing along with ever. Yeah, you'll be singing these songs for a long time and be singing them constantly in your head or out loud in your car. This album reminds me of early Weezer. There is something about the guitars that sounds sweet also and the funny lyrics aren't absent that TPR used in their earlier releases.

Wow! TPR really deliver the full package on this album IMHO. Davey's voice sounds better, good catchy songs, same strange lyrics, and every thing we love TPR for is packed on this record. One more thing to say......Wisconsin ROCKS. WHEW!!

4 out of 5 stars It was quite a different listen for me, but I loved it!.......2003-03-09

Before I start this review let me tell you how much I hate emo music. I loathe it. Yet I love The Promise Ring.
For a moment, while I review this album, let's pretend that I like emo music and I bought this album to add to my huge collection of albums featuring off-key singers whose voices crack with sickening predictability and whiney guitars. Imagine my surprise when I found this album to be refreshingly upbeat with enjoyably quirky lyrics.
Before I bought the album I had heard the first three tracks, "Happiness is all the Rage," "Emergency! Emergency!" and "The Deep South." I loved all of these songs to death, and decided to buy the album. It was also relatively cheap compared to other things I was looking for, and I'm on a tight budget right now.
It's a great album to listen to in the car because it's fun to sing along too. Even a tone-deaf person can sing along to (shh!) emo music, because the singers themselves are often tone deaf.
I read a review for this album on Amazon.com in which someone said, "But the fact...that you can sing the first song before it is even over is not a good sign." I completely disagree. Sure, every once and awhile we thirst for a song with deep meaning, but most of the time all we really want is too be able to bob our heads and sing along to catchy melodies and clever lyrics.
Let's look at a few lyrics, which I find them so clever and amusing: "And we could do more outdoor things/if we weren't so busy/getting busy," (Happiness is All the Rage) "I was born in 1968/Born to replace Bobby Kennedy" and "We're all arms and dangerous/We're all almost famous for it" from Arms and Dangerous.
And now, back to the place where we're all ourselves in our right mindset, the place where I really hate emo music. The place where I love The Promise Ring despite myself.

5 out of 5 stars HOLY MOLY! IT'S AWSOME!!!.......2002-09-15

Okay, THE PROMISE RING has become one of my favorite band as of this writing (Sept.2002), largely due to their amazing poppy-rocky album, Very Emergency. I'm sure you have read how hooky and catchy the album is...well it's true. It's not only that but all so very much melodious! Hummable and rockable at the same time. I want to jump around bopping to the tunes. Very ear-friendly and touching, almost naive yet reassuring. It's been 3 years since the release, I still listen to it. I feel very happy when I listen to the album...

5 out of 5 stars 3 years old and still in heavy rotation.......2002-04-18

I had never been a big fan of The Promise Ring. Their previous efforts never impressed me. They weren't terrible, but found them very dull. Heck, I can't even remember what inspired me to buy this CD, since I didn't like thier other stuff. I think I read reviews praising the album and just picked it up as an impulse buy. Anyhow, when I listened to it I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Catchy, poppy songs that stick in your head....right up my alley...and they were from Milwaukee. It was nice to see a band from Brew Town besides the Femmes and the BoDeans get some national recognition.

This CD is excellent from Happiness is All The Rage to the final fading verses of All of My Everything. I have read that the Promise Ring hates being painted with the dreaded "Emo" paintbrush and this album helps distance them from the drab and tired Emo scene from which they emerged.

As my review title reveals...I have had this CD for almost 3 years and I still pull it out about once a month or more. It is a very hard CD to get sick of.

4 out of 5 stars pop perfection.......2002-01-06

hard to find an American band these days that is able to create such simply, beautiful and heart-felt pop songs. This record is a bit on the pop side of their spectrum (vs say, Nothing Feels Good, which is somewhat heavier) but it is a great direction for them to show off their great hooks and pop-chops.

This record really picked me up when i needed it.

4 out of 5 stars Good, not great.......2007-01-07

There are some gems on this CD. Most of the music is nondescript when you listen to it; it is much more suited to being the background music of a TV show, of course. In other words, it's not like regular music you get on a regular commercial band's CD. In my opinion, the best songs are the Main Titles, in particular the 5th season.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2001-11-05

This is a wonderful sound track. Chirstopher Franke catches the mood of the series with his music and it sounds even better when you listen to a recording, away from the episodes. Buy this.

5 out of 5 stars This really is the Best of Babylon 5!.......2001-11-04

Thank you to Christopher Franke and Sonic Images for The Best of Babylon 5! Although I have most of these tracks on other B5 CD's, I really enjoyed this one because of the consistently great music. I would rank this one as excellent, along with my other two favorites, Babylon 5 Volume 2, "Messages from Earth" and the episodic CD, "Sleeping in Light." Two tracks deserve special mention: Track 2 is (I believe) a reworking of music from the album Babylon 5 Volume 1. With the "Battle of the Line" music in the background, Chris Franke adds new ideas to enhance the musical experience. The other notable track is the last one, Track 18 "Bonus Theme." This is a fabulous new track, which I understand was written for the (unfortunately never released) Babylon 5 CD-Rom game. This is six minutes of great music, that cannot be mistaken for anything other than "Babylon 5-style" music. It's a thrilling piece, which alone makes me glad I bought the CD. Let's hope we get the same quality offering with the "Legend of the Rangers" movie soundtrack, which I hope will be released next year.

    Album Description

Over a decade ago, Melbourne's Runaway Boys turned from rockabilly covers to originals and changed their name to The Living End. Since then they've racked up a quintuple platinum album (1998's "The Living End"), two platinum and five gold records, won three ARIA awards, countless other accolades, and gathered fans worldwide. "State Of Emergency" dishes out some of the best punk rock energy of the band's career. Look for them on the Warped Tour in July.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Punkabilly Rock at its Absolute Best.......2006-09-12

The Living End's last release, "Modern Artillery" didn't do much for the trip which was a good thing, because the album was more of a blatant pop punk sellout album than anything else. So now the band is back doing what they do best; rockabilly influenced political ska punk. This is their fourth full-length album and a good follow-up to their second release. The album features song that incorporate the bands unique sound. Give "Wake Up" and What's On Your Radio" a listen and you'll see what I'm talking about.

There isn't anything as catchy out there as "Prisoner of Society" or "Roll On" from their first two albums, but this is their most matured album to date. Hopefully they will continue to write punkabilly rock tunes I the future, it's what they do best.

    4 out of 5 stars Emergency! Paging...........2006-08-13

Good punk -- like any really good music -- is kinda hard to find. You have to sift through dozens of hack, ripoff bands before finding something with energy and brilliance.

And one good example is the Living End's latest album, "State of Emergency." The longstanding Aussie band mixes tightly-wound punk and kinetic instrumentation with some wicked musical aesthetics. It's pretty bloody hard to find a song on here that won't get your heartrate up through the roof.

It opens with an attention-grabbing bassline, which explodes into a fast-racing electric guitar riff. By the time it slows down into a steady punker, listeners will be hooked. "Countdown toward the end now/no need to panic, no need to panic now... I'm stepping on enemy lines/We're gonna take you to the end of the line!"

The songs that follow are just as taut as those lyrics, and they hardly ever slow down the machine-gun pace. There's the tight, winding punk-rockers, slow-burners, the dancey rockers, the rockabilly edge which harkens back to the band's roots, and the slower, drum-led "Order of the Day," which hints at a more epic sound.

Not every song is all rock'n'roll -- "No Way Out" is a gentle, sort of fuzzy acoustic melody that sounds almost like a folky ballad. It still has a rough edge, which explodes into rock'n'roll about halfway through the song. But it shows they can do more than just rock.

No rock pretensions, no ripping off the Clash or the Ramones. Best of all, absolutely ZERO boredom -- the Living End know how to rock. And unlike most rock bands, they know how to do it without sounding like they're playing the same bloody song over and over.

Instead, they break out with rapid-fire electric guitar and blasts of blasts here and there, with a sinuous line here and there to spice things up. They're fast, kinetic and the instrumentation is absolutely seamless, mixed in with some solid drums. Usually they repeat the riffs a few times to get toes tapping, then switch gears before it can get repetitive.

Nice lyrics too -- not brilliant lyrically, but they have the same sense of urgency and tension that the first song does, which match the music to a tee ("Cause they don't wanna know about the things you've done/They don't wanna know about the damage done/Everyone is going down!"). And frontman Chris Cheney has an excellent voice, strong and raw, but with a melodious edge.

Rough, tightly-wound and ripe for repeated listening, the Living End show what they're made of in "State of Emergency" -- and apparently they're made of raw diamond.

    4 out of 5 stars A much more vocal-based album.......2006-07-28

I enjoy this album, just like any music by The Living End, but I noticed there is much more emphasis on the vocals and melody than before. There seems to be a lot less lead guitar than they're oldest music, and it seems like basslines are used a lot less than before. In the past, it was obvious by the technique that they were using a standup bass, but now, it is not quite so apparent. Over all this was a very enjoyable album, and I really can't complain much. I'm sure I will be listening to this album for quite a while.

5 out of 5 stars A Great New Release from The End !!.......2006-07-15

ok, check it. here's what you need to know about this record.

    1. any living end is good living end. it's always good to hear the boys and what they are up to. they have a "sound" but throw in a bunch of other stuff, rockabilly, punk, rock, but mostly, imagination.

    2. this album contains songs of a good length. that is why it takes longer to recognize every song independantly. There's a lot of one and three quarters to 2 minute songs out there you forget within a week. These are longer, more content oriented, more content in playing as well, there's a lot of changeups.

    3. there are some great catchy songs here. Listne to wake up and dont tell me you wont be singing the opening lines. this album is a single factory. if you wanna sing in the shower, the car, or the can, you will. Right now i'm singing "long live the weekend". it's been banging around for 3 weeks now.

    4. it's a fun album. even when it gets slow, you dont find yourself getting bored. if you are an album listener, you will like this, it's got good longevity. i've had it when it came out in aust and it's getting good play.

    5. listen to the clips below. the actual u.s. release is coming soon if you dont want the import. go to their myspace and their site, watch the videos. these guys are the best thing to come out of aust in a long time.
