Editorial Reviews
What the Critics Say
[P]ost-grunge rock classicism, by turns powerful and mournful. "Dickeye" and "Jesus Hands" rock mightily, [and] the closing "Cold Piece" is wonderfully bizarre.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-02-28

Demonstrates the song writing power of Jerry Cantrell. His best work by far.

5 out of 5 stars Downright Gritty Grungy Gunslinging Creeper Rock. Very nice........2006-07-19

Message to the reader: JUST GO OUT & BUY ALL HIS WORK
Jerry. Don't ever stop song writing. Come home to Seattle and play Boggy Depot live. For those who were only just born when you were at the climax of your career have lost so much.

-His music has engrained itself in me and everyone who has ever taken a good long listen. After I let it all sink in, it reflects in my own playing.

-This Album is a must buy. If you are considering buying this album don't think a second longer just do it.

-The melodies are as solid as it gets. Especially if you like keychanges and out of the ordinary phrasing.

-The best thing a musician or music lover could do for themselves

-Must look at Mad Season, Temple of the Dog, Degredation Trip & The Cranberries. You may also like Elliot Smith He's something else considering he does it all most of the time as well as
Jim White.

-What was Cantrell like at his first open mics? Was he shy or a somber eyed quiet but powerful presentor?

4 out of 5 stars It'll grow on you..........2006-02-09

I'm gonna start out saying i dont even own this album. i downloaded all the songs from the internet off this album. don't worry though. the reason i did this because i BOUGHT degredation trips a few days ago and wanted to hear more jerry cantrell. its a good album. at first you wont be all impressed but just give it a few listens and you should be hooked. as everyone said before, thsi isn't alice in chains, but it is still very similar no doubt.
the first song starts out with a weird intro that sounds cool and leads to the heaviness of the song dickeye. personally i dont really care for this song, its too commercial sounding.

cut you in is a great rock song that is similar to alice in chains but once again, does not sound exactly like them.

My song is a love song and has SOMEWHAT of an aic feel, only their softer side. it is a great song and has an addicting beat after a few listens.

settling down is another softer rock song. it has some heavy parts. this is definately a song that grows on you. the first listen is nothing impressive

breaks my back, similar to settling down in that it takes a few listens, only it is a longer and heavier song.

jesus hands is definately the most AIC sounding song on the album. it almost sounds like something from DIRT. it almsot sounds like rain when i die. its a great song

devil by his side is just an average sounding song to me. nothing special. maybe i havent listened to it enough to appreciate it but its not too great

keep the light on also almost sounds like aic. its a heavier song and you should like it on the first try.

satisfy is probly the softest song on the album and is pretty relaxing.

hurt a long time is pretty good, no but its actually damn good. its also an accoustic song except for the chorus parts i happen to like accoustic songs (buy alice in chains unplugged and tell me what you think)

between is a....get this... a country song....oh no not that! yea and im not that fond of it but watever theres always gonna be one not so great song on an album. the chorus is very good but the rest isnt great.

coldpiece is wierd. i dont know what to think of it. at some points it sounds like frogs (alice in chains song) only softer. the guitar riffs in the background sounds similar to aic's song i know sumthin (bout you). but overall this song really doesnt sound much like aic at all. their is a piano in it btw. its a good song if your in a weird mood. come to think of it... i just remembered les claypool of primus plays the bass guitar on this album. i bt jerry was running out of ideas and les claypool told him to make a jam song. cuz thats what this is. les claypool is known for his jamming in his hippy concerts.

BTW if you are deciding whether or not to get degredation trips or this album here is my reccomendation: if you want more of a heavy side get degredation trips, if you want a softer side or maybe less sounding like aic, get this. but dont expect to be impressed by either one of them at first. it takes awhile to fully like the music on both albums. after that you will love it. personally i like degredation trips better, which is what most people will agree with.

5 out of 5 stars great solo effort from the chain .......2005-11-20

jerry cantrell the songwriter of alice in chains layne stanley RIP who's alice in chains day were dark and sombre well don't expect any different with this album it's a full frontal album with great lyrics cantrell voice is great and the lyrics are superb this is the only jerry cantrell solo album i own i'll hopefully get some more soon, but as i haven't at the moment every so often i put on this album and remind myself of his genius and a masterpiece

5 out of 5 stars A very mixed album..........2005-08-07

I'd like to start out by saying that this album is mixed in many different ways. There are different styles and different moods. Also, some songs you will like initially, but get kind of sick of later (just don't repeatedly listen to your favorite songs), and also there are songs that you won't notice at first which will become your favorites in the long run. Because of this, I'll do a song-by-song review.

1.Dickeye - The first song you hear, and probably the first song you'll like. After many times of listening to this album, this song is still one of my favorites.

2.Cut You In - A unique song. Not my favorite, but I think it will grow on me. If you don't care for this song, don't worry. This song pretty much stands alone on this album.

3.My Song - When I first heard this song, I was amazed. I put the album in my cd player just to hear this song... and now I'm kind of sick of it :(. Don't listen to 1 song in repetition, it ruins it for you!

4.Settling Down - A very beautiful song. Make sure you listen to it when you're relaxed, you'll enjoy it a lot more.

5.Breaks My Back - Another song I'm still adjusting to. The vocal effects just bother me I guess. However, I do like the chorus.

6.Jesus Hands - A more rock-oriented song. Not the best song on the album, but a very good one indeed.

7.Devil By His Side - My favorite song on the album. I always picture a thunderstorm while listening to it. Excellent vocals, excellent guitar work, excellent chorus... the whole song is just excellent. This song always uplifts me. Hard to believe I overlooked this song the first couple times I listened to this album...

8.Keep the Light On - Another one of my favorites. The beginning guitar work sounds like that of a song from Degredation Trip. A raw song until the chorus, which is smooth and melodic. If this whole album were one song, it would probably be this one.

9.Satisfy - A generally peaceful song with a great chorus. Kind of leads into the latter part of the album.

10.Hurt a Long Time - Yet another beautiful song with great lyrics. Once again, I love the chorus.

11.Between - I see in the other reviews that this song is labeled a country song. Don't let that steer you away from it. It has beautiful acoustics, and Jerry does mention a ranch, but it's just a great song with an excellent chorus (Jerry does really well with choruses).

12.Cold Piece - One of those songs I'm trying to like, but I don't see it happening. I drags on and doesn't really offer anyting special. Breaks My Back at least had a good chorus to offer, but this song doesn't even have that. A disappointment in an otherwise spectacular album.

Overall, this cd was worth every penny I spent on it. Definately one any fan of rock music should pick up.
