He is erratic, moody, adolescent, and unsettling, just as he is strikingly brilliant, and all depictions entwine on this collection that plucks from Daniel Johnston's most memorable work throughout a quarter-century of bare-bones recording. While his helium-pitched voice can often border on acquired taste territory, Johnston, who suffers from bipolar disorder, writes both gripping melodies and cutting, cunning lyrics--often about failed love, life's ambiguity and his passion for the Beatles and comic book heroes. Any Johnston follower might choose 21 different selections to represent such a catalog, but this package--culled mostly from his '80s songbook--is both symbolic and inclusive, including a pair of chord organ grinders that are among his most familiar: the childlike "Casper the Friendly Ghost" and the wistful "Speeding Motorcycle." Johnston's raw vulnerability shines most on "Never Before Never Again," on which he howls about a former girlfriend, and the fragmented and demented "Funeral Home," where he contemplates his last car ride (to the tune of Bruce Springsteen's "Cadillac Ranch"). Welcome to My World is ideal for any newcomers to Johnston's music, provided they are willing to peel away his torment and contemplate his true genius. --Scott Holter

4 out of 5 stars Perfect entry for the genius of Daniel.......2006-09-22

Almost every song from this compiliation is present as soundtrack to The Devil and Daniel Johnston. If you want to enter in thsi strange but beautiful world, a schizo Dylan that someday took LSD from the devilish [....] Surfers, this is the one to get. Then, if you become a fan (it happens, eheh), you should try his masterpiece - Songs of Pain 80-83.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Companion for "The Devil and Daniel Johnston".......2006-05-16

It should first be noted that the music of Daniel Johnston is not for everyone -- you will either love him or hate him, most will feel the latter. His voice sounds like a 14 year old who got into the parents' liquor cabinet, but like Bob Dylan, it's the perfect vehicle for his material. I recommend the excellent documentary currently playing in art movie theaters to learn about this unique singer songwriter's incredible life --you couldn't make up a story as sadly surreal. His music is best appreciated if you understand his history and are familiar with his artwork (his pen and ink cartoon-like drawings go for thousands of dollars). His songs, like his artwork, are replete with symbols and references to his internal mythology, a conglomeration of cartoons, comic books and fire and brimstone religion.
Welcome to My World is sort of a greatest hits of his early work, mostly recorded on cheap tape machines and often given away to people on the street. Daniel bares his soul -- listening to his music is like awkwardly being trapped with a stranger you run into, obviously a little off center, who rattles on providing too much information about his innermost feelings. But no other artist I have heard captures the angst of adolescence quite as well as Daniel, and his sense of melody, his ability to convey complex feelings with the simplest language, is brilliant. Strange, moving, disturbing stuff, an emotional car wreck that you just can't look away from. If you like the off beat and stark emotional honesty in your music, check him out.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to my World Daniel O'Donnell.......2007-03-20

I could listen to this tape all day long! It is fantastic. The man has a way of capturing you into his songs.

5 out of 5 stars WELCOME to Daniel's World.....WOW.......2007-01-06

Having grown up as a fan of Gentleman Jim, I have to agree that Gentleman Daniel has come along to do great renditions of Jim Reeves' music. Daniel's version of Welcome to My World is fabulous, that velvety quality and smoothness that is so reminescent of when Jim sang it. Daniel does a wonderful job of paying tribute to a man who obviously inspired him a lot when he was growing up in Ireland.
Thanks for a great album!

5 out of 5 stars A magnificent tribute to Gentleman Jim.......2006-11-09

While Daniel has been successful with up-tempo material, I have always preferred him as balladeer - he seems particularly suited to romantic love songs. In particular, I always considered Daniel as a latter-day Jim Reeves, so I was very pleased to see Daniel release this collection of songs made famous by his most obvious influence. I was also pleased to see that Daniel focused on the ballads that he is so good at singing.

In his own career, tragically cut short when he was killed in a plane crash, Jim Reeves had many hits in Britain, which were often different from the hits he had in America. For this tribute album, Daniel has chosen to record many of Jim's biggest British hits.

Here you can listen to Daniel singing his own version's of Jim's British top ten hits - Welcome to my world, I love you because, I won't forget you, There's a heartache following me, It hurts so much and, of course, Distant drums, with which Jim had a posthumous number one hit. Other classics such as Adios Amigo, He'll have to go, You're the only good thing, When two worlds collide and Not until the next time (all of which made the UK top twenty for Jim) are also included.

Daniel has not limited himself to UK hits, but has also included some other fine songs such as Anna Marie, Am I losing you, Blue side of lonesome, Don't let me cross over and How can I write on paper - every one of them well chosen, as they particularly suit Daniel's style.

It is futile to debate the relative merits of Daniel's versions compared to Jim's. As far as I'm concerned, Jim is unbeatable - at least when it comes to his later recordings (from which most of the songs here are selected), but his music will only survive for future generations if artists such as Daniel keep it alive. There will be some people who will buy their first Jim Reeves album because they like this tribute album, and who might never have done so otherwise. What I will say is that there is no singer anywhere is the world who is better suited to doing an album of Jim Reeves songs than Daniel O'Donnell. This album is proof of that.

This magnificent tribute should appeal to existing fans of Jim and Daniel alike. It might even bring them a few new fans who previously didn't take much notice of either of them.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the World of Danny O'Donnell.......2006-07-06

I happened to see Danny on PBS and thought the show was pretty good so I started checking into his music, I have purchased many CD's and play them at my office, everyone who comes in wants to know who that is!. So they are all getting Danny CD's for Christmas. Can't wait to get to Branson to see him live. Listening to his voice is so soothing and relaxing and when he sings Danny Boy, nothing better.

5 out of 5 stars Daniel Does Great Singing Jim Reeves.......2006-04-26

I was born 2 years after the plane crash, but grew up listening to his and other country music. Daniel O'Donnell does a great job in his singing of Jim Reeves songs. I really enjoy them!

5 out of 5 stars EASY LISTENING.......2003-09-08

If you are a fan of DEAN MARTIN,you'll love those two 1967 lps .We're about halfway mark through the REPRISE years, and DINO fresh from the success of his tv series, almost transform everything from the standards to his new songs like LITTLE OLE WINE DRINKER,ME into his own unique style. That is the mark of a singer who knows his craft, even if the material is medium. This is easy listening music at it's best, and DINO is almost in the twilight of his career with still a few delights to come.As you know, there are many DEAN MARTIN impersonators nowadays, but why not stick with the original? The song IN THE CHAPEL IN THE MOONLIGHT was originally a FRENCH song recorded by LEO MARJANE in 1938 under the title LA CHAPELLE AU CLAIR DE LUNE.

4 out of 5 stars Middle of the road Dino pop.......2003-05-25

These are probably not Dino's finest Reprise recordings, but there are a few gems. "Welcome To My World" equals the original rendition by Jim Reeves, though somewhat different in style. Dean's "Green Green Grass Of Home" is very impressive. "Little Old Winedrinker" is fun, and there are nice cuts of "Wallpaper Roses" and "Chapel In The Moonlight (great Ernie Freeman arragnements and the latter is an extremely impressive vocal by Dean), and the gentle "I Can't Help Remembering You". The rest is filler...but good filler!

5 out of 5 stars HAPPINESS IS DEAN MARTIN.......2003-03-21

This is my second favorite of the two fer CD series and well worth purchasing if you are considering it. These two albums were released within three months of each other and I would assume were recorded together because together they sound like one album. I like each and every song but I prefer Elvis's version of Please Release Me. I especially like Think About Me ,He's Got You, and Welcome To My World . All said these are two great albums which I will listen for many years to come.

Standup comedian, actress, and singer Lea DeLaria presents a less confrontational image here than she did on 1994's Bulldyke in a China Shop, adopting the role of seductive, witty, confident, and heterosexual jazz chanteuse to perfection. Her voice ranges from little-girl-lost innocence to harder-edged tones, both suited to the opening "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd." With stylings from Billie Holiday to Judy Garland, "I've Got Your Number" heads straight for the heart of 1950s big-band balladry, improvised scat vocals proving DeLaria can swing with the best. "Cool" is anything but, the accompaniment understated, that voice dripping with the promise of sex. In "With Every Breath I Take," we get to imagine every late night smoky bar in every old Hollywood film we've ever seen--while it is pastiche, the characterization is startlingly evocative.

DeLaria sums it up with "All That Jazz," confidently suggesting, following her recent twin roles in the lavishly acclaimed 2000 Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show, that this girl just wants to have fun playing bad. When she sings "Life Has Been Good to Me," she has such an upbeat twinkle, you suspect she means every word. --Gary S. Dalkin

4 out of 5 stars if you like female jazz vocalists you'll love this album.......2004-07-27

I wish Delaria would put out more albums like this one. Her voice and interpretation of the songs on the album are really great and withstand lots of repeat plays. Highly recommended. Many of the cuts are worth 5 stars, but I didn't really like all of her song choices, so that's why I rated the album 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone does it, and seldom as well..........2004-04-10

All I can say is...WOW.
When my partner and I saw Lea perform her routine in P-town, she wowed us with a stunning version of one of my all-time favorites, "The Ballad of Sweeny Todd." We bought her CD on the spot and it stayed in my car's CD player for weeks on end (and then I only took it out because I had to switch cars).
I enjoyed the whole album, but I found myself playing the first track over and over, and even singing it in the shower. I must disagree with the "Cigar" review on all counts, at least regarding this track. The song lends itself so beautifully to swingin' jazz I can't believe nobody thought of it before. But I'm glad no one has, because Lea DeLaria knocks it out of the park. The smooth delivery is perfect for the dry humor of the lyrics, her belts are such a perfect blend of head and chest it sends chills up my spine, and the arrangement is spot-on. The best part - it stands up beautifully to repeat listenings; I just can't grow tired of this rendition. The opening track alone is worth twice the price of this CD.

"The meadows are clothed with flocks And the valleys are covered with grain; They shout for joy, yes, they sing." (Psalm 65:13)

In all of my days spent on this journey up until now, I have never heard more beautiful music than that of Carol Thompson's Harp playing. It echoes with the music of the Celtic landscape as well as the hearts of the Celtic people from whom many of these songs descend. It is a wonder.

The Bible speaks of the boy David playing his harp to soothe the wrath of King Saul. If David's playing was anything like Thompson's playing of this music...I can see how something like that might work.

From the opening strains of Bonny Portmore to the last note of O'Carolan's Farewell, Thompson's CD "The Faerie Isles" is filled with the utter joy of beauty. It is no secret that Dorian is my favorite label...I have yet to be disappointed by one of their discs--but this one is exceptional indeed.

I give "The Faerie Isles" my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Lush and lovely music from the past.......2000-01-20

Perhaps some day Dorian Recordings will turn out a poor CD, but among their more recent releases are four sets that feature harpist Carol Thompson. The artist was born in this country of Anglo-Welsh-Irish background (as the copywriter tells us). Part of her technique is to let her ornamentation come out of the melody rather than merely appending it, and to execute her chords with a "downward roll" rather than an upward as in classical harp playing.

So with Amazon.com's permission, I will submit this same write up to each of the four webpages that deal with these albums.

. (DOR-90013) has Ms. Thompson accompanied by another harpist and a wooden flute; and the extra coloration is welcome. Here we have 18 cuts (64 minutes) of Celtic harp music, the more familiar of which are "Brian Boru's March" and "Gentle Annie." The notes are of a general nature.

The subtitle of (DOR-90120) shows the program (53 minutes) to be much like the other sets, including the familiar "All Through the Night" and "The Ash Grove." I spot even one or two selections among the 19 here that appeared on earlier recordings. But it is all so winningly played that one must not carp. The notes are in several languages and a bit shorter than usual to keep the booklet from being too thick.

(DOR-90176) has 71 minutes consisting of 21 cuts such as "She Moves Through the Fair" and "Snow on the Hills." This set tends to be more satisfactory than the last one because of the presence of accordion, concertina, wooden flute and second harp; although by now one tune is starting to blur into the other.

The fourth Dorian set in order of recording is (DOR-90240) in which our harpist goes it alone with a short program (51 minutes) of 12 cuts, half of which are medleys. Included are "Twisting of the Rope," "Blind Mary" and the title song. This time the notes give information about each song.

Again I must emphasize the excellence of the playing and how beautiful each CD is by itself. But as with so many artists that concentrate on a small part of the music spectrum, each new offering tends to be predictable and one gets a strong feeling of déjà vu. But to be fair, these sets were released with considerable time between them and only people like reviewers now and then get to hear them all at once.

So which to choose? I would go for the two where you get more than the sound of a single harp first. But I really think that enthusiasts of British music will want to have all of these sets sooner or later.

And keep an eye open for the fifth entry in this series: (DOR-90273) that is not yet available at the time of this writing.

Dowland's lute works are among the most beautiful compositions of the Renaissance period. Because so many of his pieces are wistful and sad, he was known as "the melancholy Dowland," although McFarlane's selection offers a fair number of more cheerful pieces. These performances are extremely stylish, alert and expressive in every moment of the music. Paul O'Dette's Dowland recordings for Harmonia Mundi are also very well played and include all of the composer's music on five discs. For a single-disc introduction to the composer, this Dorian CD is ideal. Dowland fanatics will need O'Dette's series, and perhaps McFarlane's also. Dorian's sound is extremely realistic. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Superb single volume collection of John Dowland's lute music.......2005-12-15

I first heard John Dowland's lute music many years ago as a classical guitar student, thought it, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and the Spanish repertoire the cream of the music for the guitar - and still feel mostly that way. But it was awhile before I was able to find recordings of Dowland's music.

Ronn McFarlane's "Lute Music of Dowland" is a wonderful introduction to John Dowland's lute music. His playing is delightful, the digital recording itself captures his lute beautifully, and the CD offers 28 Dowland compositions, a number well known, some not, all performed stylishly in a way that captures your attention from the very beginning, to the end, of the CD.

Dowland's music represents the very peak of Elizabethan lute music in late sixteenth centry England, a period which began with lutenist John Johnson, and whose music spread in popularity across Europe.

There is an unmistakable melancholy quality about Dowland's music, but it also contains numerous memorable pieces, such as Sir John Smith's Almaine, My Lady Hudson's Puffe, The Earl of Essex Galliard, Melancholy Galliard, Queen Elizabeth's Galliard, Lachrimae, The Frog Galliard etc,; some extraordinary passagework, and appeal that very much transcends time.

Ronn McFarlane's Dowland CD on the Dorian label, along with Jakob Lindberg's Dowland CD on BIS, are the two best single CD collections I know of Dowland's lute music, apart from Paul O'Dette's five volume collection of Dowland which the serious or compleat Dowland collector might prefer. (Julian Bream also offers Dowland on his lute recital CDs, but these include other composers.)

    Strongly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2002-10-22

This one's a winner. The music of Dowland is eternal. The lute playing and recording here is peerless. The Amazon review is right on. I'm not such a lute fan, but I return to this CD often. I want more from lutenist Ronn McFarlane! Bravo to all involved here.

4 out of 5 stars El Espíritu del Renacimiento.......2001-05-25

¡Bienvenidos!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to a distinguished new series.......2003-09-29

I can't express how excited I am about this new series from Naxos and the Milken Archive! There is some absolutely stunning music on this sampler, and I can't wait until the full recordings are released. Especially notable are Ernst Toch's "Cantata of the Bitter Herbs" (what gorgeous choral & orchestral writing), Paul Schoenfield's Viola Concerto (utterly fantastic excerpt "King David Dancing Before the Ark"), the excerpt from Joseph Achron's suite from The Golem, "Open the Gates" from Dave Brubeck's Gates of Justice, and the lovely duet from Joseph Rumshinsky's Yiddish operetta "Di goldene kale." Also, if you're not familiar with Jewish liturgical music or with klezmer, there are wonderful examples on this disc. My only disappointment is that, because of economic reasons, most of the recordings had to be made with European ensembles. Although the performances are excellent (under directors Gerard Schwarz, Neville Marriner, Yoel Levi and others), it's just a shame that this music, which, in addition to being Jewish, is also very AMERICAN, cannot be preserved on CD by American ensembles. At any rate, I'm pretty certain that within the next couple of years, I'll have collected all the 50 discs in this project. You don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this great music. And at around $7.00 a disc, they're an incredible value. This marvelous sampler will get you hooked on some fabulous music.

This girl has heart, soul and passion in her voice,. She sings every word as if she has LIVED it. Don't let the fact that she's on an independent label detour you from purchasing her CD. I have listened to it myself over and over again and yet I never get tired of hearing her. The best cut that has yet to be released is "THE BED THAT YOU MADE" with another suggested cut being "WHY CAN'T YOU"

5 out of 5 stars Vaughan Williams --- off the beaten path.......2006-05-16

This ample collection demonstrates that Richard Hickox has to be considered one the leading Vaughan Williams interpreters in the post-Boult world, as he puts forth sparkling performances of many little-known works, including the Concerto accademico and the film music "49th Parallel," among others. Quite a number of these compositions are rarely recorded, if ever; it is quite nice to see them in a very affordable collection such as this.

Like another reviewer, I find the affected style of Stephen Roberts to be distracting & annoying. Also, the orchestral version of the Serenade to Music is a pale imitation of the original version...if you have heard Boult's recording, you will understand that the original version is far superior. It is a shame that it wasn't included here.

These are mere quibbles, however. For a dirt-cheap price, you have the opportunity to fill in the gaps of your Vaughan Williams collection. There is no good reason to pass on this. If you stumble across these CDs (I found mine at BestBuy of all places), grab it.

4 out of 5 stars Hickox Conducts Vaughan Williams.......2000-09-05

This is a most-welcome CD release, especially since it contains a number of pieces not available on CD until now. It's also excellent value--two discs for the price of one.

Of particular interest is the curious ballet Old King Cole, written for an outdoor performance at Trinity College, Cambridge. Essentially a light-hearted piece, the music is not of the highest level of inspiration overall, but there are moments of real beauty that make up for any shortcomings in the score. For the convinced Vaughan Williams admirer, this is a must-have (RVW himself recorded some of this music; this early mono recording has been released on CD by Pearl records.)

Other items of similar interest include the Prelude On An Old Carol Tune, written for a BBC radio play, and a pair of hard-to-find marches. The instrumental version of the Serenade to Music is a gorgeous novelty, but no substitute for the original version for 16 vocalists and orchestra.

Also included are two important concertos; one for oboe and one for violin, both with string accompaniment. The violin concerto receives the better performance. The rendering of the oboe concerto suffers from too-slow tempi, particularly in the final movement. Neither are major works, but are nonetheless full of interest and deserve to be better known.

Some well-known RVW works are included, among them The Lark Ascending and Five Mystical Songs. The latter is marred by the soloist's excessive tendency to roll his r's--an almost comical sound sometimes. RVW was known to have disliked this sort of affectation.

Overall a valuable collection for anyone interested in this composer. The recordings were made in the 1980s.
