3 out of 5 stars Rik's Rhetoric.......2002-09-18

This was my first listen to the solo side of Rik Emmett and I hated it at first. The reason why was all the great reviews I read on Amazon[.com] had Rik pegged as guitarist elite; and he could do no wrong.
First, I've listened to this like 15 times trying to find some great awareness. It's cute. But it's probably not his best; and no where near his days with Triumph. Let's face it together...each cut has about 10-15 secs of lead at best. Second, it just wreaks of studio.
Again, the music's cute but too, damned clean. I gave my copy away. I did just buy "Ipso facto" and I am hoping for a better experience---Three stars max---tah-dah.

4 out of 5 stars A more commercial outing from Canadian guitar hero.......1999-01-14

With The Spirial Notebook, we get to see a new side of Rik Emmett. On this disc, his voice - not his guitar - takes center stage. Truth be told, I was a little disappointed after my first listen. Where were all the guitar solos? Where were the harder rock songs? But, with repeated plays, I grew to appreciate what Emmett has done on this CD. He's not looking to reinvent the past. He's pushing forward into new areas. Of course, his songwriting is still strong. Over time, I found myself humming many of the tunes. Anything You Say, Raise High and Casey's On A Roll come to mind. If you're solely into his guitar hero material, Absolutely, his first solo disc, is the way to go. But, if you enjoy hearing a great voice and listening to catchy melodies, The Spiral Notebook won't disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars It's not Triumph -- but it's Rik.......2006-07-06

This is a great pop album. Don't expect the hard-rock of Triumph, but do expect Rik's inspirational and insightful lyrics; and of course his great guitar-playing. Why this doesn't get American airplay, I'll never know. Probably 'cause American radio wants to label Rik "hard rock" and he's not. My sister played Let Me Be The One at her wedding. I finally found a guitar player good enough to play The Way that You Love Me at mine while my sister sang. Take My Heart off Progressions of Power would also be an awesome wedding song. Rik was trying to break through with his soft side way back then, but his bandmates and management wouldn't let him. I commend from walking away from fame and fortune to do what his wanted to do. Rik, you're the best!

5 out of 5 stars Spiral Notebook.......2003-02-21

As you can see from the previous two reviews, this CD is for those who are interested in soft melody rock, not for those looking for a continuation of Triumph. Rik has changed paces from his days with Triumph resulting in a true artist. This particular CD expresses down to earth feelings written to very enjoyable melodies. I begun listening to Rik in 1976 when Triumph first came to the scene and consider him one of the finest artist in the business. An artist is a person who creates and Rik creates an amazing atmosphere with his music. "Let me be the One" is my our wedding song, bringing tears to our wedding guests. If you are looking for a soft rock CD, then this CD is for you. If you are looking for a continuation of Triumph's style, sorry, Rik has developed into his own style.

3 out of 5 stars A-a-ah!.......2002-10-30

If you're thinking Triumph then buy Triumph but don't say I told you to buy this. Yup! All of Rick Emmett's material is good; and equal to 3stars max and I could say the same for Ipso Facto and Live at Berkeley. I say go support an American artist---this stuff gags me.

5 out of 5 stars THANK YOU RIK EMMETT.......1999-07-09

Thank you, Rik Emmett, for continuing to share with us your melodic notes and incredible voice. "Let Me Be the One" is the perfect wedding song (we used "The Way That You Love Me" off the 'Absolutely' cd)!

This album proves, yet again, that Rik Emmett is a very talented, very versatile artist.
