David Russell was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but his family moved to Spain while he was still a young boy so he could study music in the birthplace of classical guitar. On Reflections of Spain, Russell plays the music of his childhood home with all the joy you would expect from someone revisiting a beloved place. Russell's formidable technique is powered by a keen intelligence and tempered by an emotional delivery. He plays chestnuts like Tarrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" and Albeinez's "Austurias" with a fond intimacy that rescues them from cliché. Perhaps the finest moments on the CD are Russell's guitar arrangements of four of Granados's compositions. Although Granados wrote pieces like "Danza Melancolia" and "Andaluza" for piano, Russell's thoughtful versions remind us that the folk dances that inspired them were originally accompanied by the guitar. David Russell is one the finest classical guitarists to emerge in recent years, and his playing on Reflections of Spain is a near perfect wedding of technique and temperament. --Michael Simmons

One additional element worth noting: David Russell plays the "full" versions of both 'Recuerdos de La Alhambra' (Tarrega) and 'Sevilla' (Albeniz)on this recording. He plays all the repeats in Recuerdos, which times out at 5:31, almost twice the length of most recordings due to the repeats. Hey, the more of Russell's liquid-smooth tremolo we get, the better! On 'Sevilla' Russell repeats the entire 'A' section at the end. Nearly all guitarists in the past (Segovia, Williams, Bream, etc. etc.) have played the piece with a curtailed A section at the end.
The Granados arrangements are wonderful. Russell's sheet music arrangements of Spanish Dances 5 and 10 and 'La Maja de Goya' are available - it's great to have a clean, modern arrangement of the Spanish Dance #10 in particular.

This is my most favorite CD. David Russell has exquisite taste and exquisite execution. He is an absolute master of the classic Spanish guitar, and he shows off this mastery in this beautiful CD. Each piece is a joy to savor. His crystalline technique makes this a superb addition to anyone's collection. You will smell the lemon blossoms in the courtyard of the Mezquita in Cordoba when you listen to this marvelous recording.

Having just returned to England after a long spell living in Spain I was searching for an evocative suite of Spanish guitar music to accompany my extensive array of photographic studies. Being familiar with the work 'Recuerdos de la Alhambra' I was immediately attracted to this compilation: 'Reflections of Spain'. The music was a revelation. David Russel made the guitar sing lyrically, recalling many bitter sweet moments of life in Iberia. The light and shade of the choices included covered such a broad scope as to fit my purpose exactly and give enjoyment better than I could have hoped for.

This is the best Spanish guitar CDs that I have found. Even with "Essential Guitar: 33 Guitar Masterpieces" having more tracks and two CDs, this is better material. I am not saying that "33 Guitar Masterpiece" was bad, I actually rate it second. No need to skip through "Reflections" like many other compilations of this mixed type CD. The quaility is crisp but lower overall peak (loudness) sound compared to some of my other CDs. Read reviews of other CDs of this type because there is many that have substandard recording measures. I believe this is a must for the any guitar lover!!!

Like every one else I have probably heard all other worthy versions of most of these tunes....I happened to find out about David Russell via reading a bio of Barrios and recommended recordings....it said...Dave Russell is the man...I had not heard of him before that...I got the CD...and WOW...!!then I got interested in his music so I bought anything I could from him including the Aire latino , plays Bach and this one....this guy was born to play the classical guitar...

This is the first artist that I hear uses proper dynamics in his performance...the rest of the pack do not nearly use the guitar as a guitar they use it just another vehicle to play a composition....David's strumming...pulling pushing the music and his singing tone is above all others...not as controled as other classical players....if people played the guitar as a guitar not as a lute..or harpsicored or a piano...then this is what it should sound like...acoustic guitar's range is very limited ...but in the hands of a master...there are no limits....

Before Warner Bros relegants this incredible debut recital to the recycle bin, snap it up. Bax's plays (especially the Bach pieces) is nothing short of stunning. Where Gould can be harsh, Bax caresses the music. These are amazing transcriptions (especially Gluck). Bax is the 'real thing' and this album will provide hours and hours of pleasurable listening.

Naida Cole really makes Ravel sound fresh and new, yet--she is devoid of tricks and pretension. Instead, she creates a sound of glass and the whistle of wind through a bird's wings, light yet solid and crisp. THIS WOMAN CAN PLAY!

Her precise touch is matched by tonal control, yet she never lets her technique dominate the sound; this is ABOUT the music. And what music! The Ravel "Mirors" never sounded so good to me, and the rest of the CD is almost as delightful. I wish she'd included Debussy here, as well, though I suspect that she led with her strongest suit, the difficult and gorgeous sound of Maurice Ravel. She dominates the moody Liszt sonata with originality and quiet strength.

This is an interesting compilation; her impressionistic sound is never blurred and is imminently suited to the Spanish, the French and Liszt (a Hungarian.) While not really alike to the delicate, etherial sound of Alicia Delarrocha, Cole's playing has the same clarity and finly-controlled touch and superb, restrained use of pedal.

The Bartok compositions are not his best work, His typically quirky harmony and Gypsy dissonances were not pleasing in these Hungarian dances. I prefer Bartok for violin, frankly, where the harsh or strident dissonance can make heartfelt wails. These were the least pleasing choices on the CD.

I played this CD and her other release about three times running, fascinated by the sound she conjures up. It's like seeing colors when the notes are struck, hard to describe, but the impression is like the sun hitting a crystal and breaking into bits of rainbows. I was delighted. So will you be.

5 out of 5 stars A Superb Young Pianist.......2003-06-10

As it happens, on this disc Naida Cole goes toe-to-toe with a couple of CDs by one of my favorite unknown pianists, Minoru Nojima, who recorded the two main pieces here (the Liszt sonata and Ravel's 'Miroirs') on two Reference Recordings discs. I have raved for years about Nojima's performances to anyone who would stand still to listen. And now, I have to say, there are a couple performances that match his.

The Ravel is stunning. Anyone who bought Angela Hewitt's 2-CD issue of the complete Ravel piano works will be astounded at this performance. Where Hewitt is rather bland and stolid in 'Noctuelles' (the first of the Miroirs set), Cole's playing is gossamer. She takes the très léger marking seriously and the piece flutters and flies awkwardly (just like the eponymous 'Night Moths' of Léon-Paul Forgue's poem). In 'Oiseaux tristes' (described by Ravel as birds singing in the deepest forest during the hottest part of a summer day) Cole beautifully manages the two layers of the piece: birds above in the right hand, torpor of the forest in the left hand. The two longest sections, 'Une barque sur l'océan' and 'Alborado del gracioso' are equally convincing. Cole handles the virtuosity of each without breaking a sweat and, more important, plays them as if they are important music, not showpieces. After hearing her play the catchy Spanish rhythms of 'Alborado,' I would love to hear Ms Cole play Albeniz and Granados. The final 'La Vallée des cloches,' depicting the sounds of the bells of Paris at midday, according to what Ravel told Robert Casadesus, is for me the most Debussyan of all Ravel's works. Simply gorgeous tonal control here.

Liszt's Sonata is hard to pull off. The dynamic contrasts have to be finely judged, the narrative (if it can be called that) must be gently underlined or it becomes amorphous. And the generally slow tempo makes it hard to keep it moving. Cole manages all these things, handles the virtuosity required, and makes real music of it all. Her intepretation is gentler than Nojima's, but this adds more mystery to this powerful work. The final fugal section is more fleet, less brutal but ultimately more exciting than Nojima's. In a word, it blew me away.

The relatively negligible Bartók 'Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs' are well done, but not as infectious as the performances of Zoltan Kocsis or Gyorgy Sandor.

Naida Cole is a superbly talented and musical pianist to watch. I give this recording a hearty recommendation.

Again she chooses some of the most difficult repertoire for piano, yet makes it sound like she was born to play it. Her technical playing is inhuman. However, even more impressive, the real magic here is the emotional subtlety and insight infused in each piece. You can almost hear her ferocious intellect blazing through the keyboard. The selection of these seemingly unconnected pieces - they in fact are connected - is another wise selection by the artist. Bravo to her label for letting her make this record. Hopefully they give Ms. Cole the marketing support and priority she deserves on this record and in future. The music world should wake up and listen. This an artist who deserves to be a superstar.

Naida Cole's interpretations of Ravel's Mirrors is pristine. Her technical skills are out of this world. For some reason, I feel her playing is akin to a coloratura soprano. It's very joyful and light, yet one gets a sense of deep emotive foundations in her playing. She's a truly gifted pianist who has undoubtedly work hard to get to her current level. The real gem on this album is the Liszt sonata. It's not a piece that gets heard much, but Cole plays it with great gusto and finesse. This is definitely one of the best discs I've bought within the last year and it will be a main staple in my cd player for some time to come.

      This CD was a fabulous rendition of fantastic piano scores. I am so thankful that William Wellborn has carried on the Chopin tradition as well as other masters of the time. Wellborn's performance truly honors the masters and I am thankful that he continues to lead the charge in performing this wonderful classic music superbly. I enjoyed the entire CD and adoring Chopin so very much, would love the world to fully appreciate his music and this artist truly allows that. I think the stage is set for the future appreciation of this music for generations to come and would love to have Mr. Wellborn cut more CDs. Bravo! Bravo and thank you William!

          This release is the second in Cala's Stokowski series, following on from the highly successful Philadelphia Rarities (CACD0501), and it offers an unique opportunity to hear a number of unissued recordings made by Stokowski which have come to light in the archives. In addition, the maestro's voice can be heard on the first track, cajoling and enjoying a joke with the audience. The repertoire is fascinating in its variety and scope, ranging from a performance of La Marseillaise (complete with audience participation), to the Pastoral Symphony from Messiah in Stokowski's inimitable arrangement. However, the most important piece on the disc is undoubtedly the maestro's extraordinary performance of Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Overture, which underscores how effective an interpreter Stokowski could be.
