One of Depeche Mode's greatest strengths is also their greatest weakness. The band comes up with some of pop music's most inventive lyrics, and at the same time, they always give the impression that they'll arbitrarily sing about anything, as long as it's depressing. But on Exciter there's an autobiography in the lyrics that, for the first time, strikes a chord with skeptics and believers alike. Singer David Gahan's battle with addiction and its horrendous pitfalls took its toll in DM's 1990s releases; Songs of Faith and Devotion failed to measure up to their groundbreaking albums of the '80s, and Ultra found songwriter Martin Gore less inspired, and a hoarse Gahan incapable of delivering his signature clear and booming vocals. Mercifully, the band has exorcised the demons and produced an album that places them squarely back on track. The opener, "Dream On," is a close cousin to "Personal Jesus," combining earthy guitar with electrified, pulsating synths. The track's physical and metaphorical imagery poignantly relays the karmic revolution of living the fast life. The brilliant, mesmerizing monster of a tune, "The Dead of Night," swaggers with a giant, crushing industrial beat like a Nine Inch Nails song dressed in glamorous drag, while the ballads "Shine" and "Freelove" are as beautiful as the classic "Somebody" (but entirely unburdened by saccharine sentimentality). Gore's keen ear for shimmering sonics and bellowing rhythm reinvigorates the Depeche Mode-branded synth-pop that's remained unique for the last 20 years. In all, Exciter is a stunning return to form, and a triumph by every definition. --Beth Massa

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow, what a grower.......2007-06-19

I don't think any album has ever grown on me quite like Exciter has. And I don't believe that time has simply made it more palatable - I'm pretty sure now in retrospect that the main reason I was initially disappointed was because it followed my favorite DM album, Ultra, so the bar was impossibly high. Also, it's undeniably more subdued than the previous albums. I love mellow stuff, but I wasn't expecting it, so it took me a little by surprise.

Fast forward a half dozen years and now this is one of the DM albums I find myself going back to the most. I absolutely love it, and can't believe there was ever a time I didn't. I love that this album is different from the others in that it's the most low-key and romantic. It's such a beautiful album, and showcases elements of this great band that are not necessarily highlighted in other albums. The only song I still don't love is "Breathe," but even that one I like a lot more than I used to. On the other hand, I think "Comatose" is one of the best Gore-sung tracks in their entire catalog (bizarre as it is). "Dream On," "Shine," "When the Body Speaks," "Dead of Night," "Freelove," "I Feel Loved," "I Am You," and "Goodnight Lovers" are every bit as good as all the classics. The production on this album is superb, and often reminiscent of Bjork's Vespertine.

If you gave up on this album early on and tossed it aside, calling it crap, I suggest popping it in sometime (preferably on a beautiful summer night) and giving it another chance. You may find that with the passage of time, you have changed your mind.

3 out of 5 stars Hypotonic but far from hideous.......2007-03-29

I would not describe myself as a hardcore DM fan, still there are albums like SOFAD that I own and really like, mainly because they tend to be more rockish than new wave/ synth. Perhaps this is the reason why'Exciter' did not seem that bad to me. Undoutedly it is hypotonic and songs like 'I feel you' and 'In your room' are obviously missing, still, the album has the familiar DM identity, slightly altered by more dark/ ambient-ish sounds. And although not all tracks are notable, there are enough to give 'Exciter' three stars. Specifically, I would give it three and a half. If you are not familiar to DM try 'Songs of faith and devotion' or 'Violator' first. If you generally like the band but are not a hardcore fan, this album would not be a bad choice.

4 out of 5 stars Very Underrated.......2007-03-08

A lot of DM fans seem not to like this album too much. I have followed DM since their inception and to me, this album sounds like a return of sorts. Clearly they've matured at this point in their career and god forbid, sobered up a bit and it shows.

DM lyrics will always have a thread of sadness but here on this album, one gets the sense that the boys needed to believe in hope. If they didn't, they might as well quit as a band which thankfully they didn't.

Obviously much of the music here is about proverbial drugs and rock 'n roll however much of what Martin Gore has written can be applied to almost any facet of life.

I like this album quite a bit because it's mostly a low key affair. Quite a departure for them. Mindful grooves and sensous melodies permeate this album. Of all the albums by DM, this is the one album that I put on and let play through. I don't do that too much with DM or with any band for that matter. This is the type of album that you listen through from beginning to end and sit back, look out at the twilight landscape and take it all in.

Highly underrated!

5 out of 5 stars Severely Underrated!!.......2006-12-28

I brought this album, not expecting a lot, because I'd read sooo many reviews complaining about how uninspired and trite it is. So, I brought it to check it out for myself. Thank god I brought it.

Exciter is so, so underrated. I'll admit, it isn't "Black Celebration", or "Violator", or "Songs of Faith and Devotion". Those are 10 star releases. But, it's awfully hard to live up to those kind of masterpieces. Exciter deserves all five stars. It is an excellent album. Maybe not flawless as the others, but excellent.

My personal favorites are Dream On, Dead Of Night, Freelove, Comatose, and Breathe. Dream On is a perfect album opener, with it's western sounding guitar melody giving the song a slight ruggedness. Dead Of Night is just a fun song. The lyrics are cheap and tawdry, and the song makes you feel a litle dirty just listening to it, with lyrics like "We're the horniest boys/With the corniest ploys/We take the easiest girls/To our sleaziest worlds". It is dark and a bit perverted, and it sounds like NIN could have easily done this song.

Freelove is simply put, gorgeous. It's easy to get lost in the ethereal sounds and music in this song. Also, if you are completely smitten with Dave Gahan and feel lightheaded at the sound of his voice, you just might pass out upon hearing the way he sings this song. Comatose, sung by the incomparable Martin Gore, is weird and otherworldly, and a really beautiful song. As he sing the line "Don't be afraid/I'm floating away...", you might feel as though you yourself are also floating away. It is a very atmospheric track, another easy-to-get-lost-in song. Breathe is just perfect. Also sung by Martin, it is an almost bluesy sounding track. Martin's smooth, impeccable vocals on this song are nothing short of amazing.

Another gem that I don't listen to as much as the others, but is still a great song is I Feel Loved. It has a techno sounding, thumping beat that you cannot help but dance to. All in all, Exciter is an awesome cd.

5 out of 5 stars Depeche Mode delivers again.......2006-10-20

Depeche changes with each album and their changes are always good. They explore new areas of sound. This album is certainly different from Violater or SOFAD or even Ultra.
The "Dead of Night" sounds a little alien and certainly the beat is irregulary and heavy. I love how after a few listens I start to crave the sound. Lovetheme is an unusual short song without any vocals. There is the normal split on DM albums of fast and slow songs. Breathe, Goodnight Lovers (who doesn't sing along to this song!), and When the Body Speaks are all slower songs that fill the listener with relaxed feelings and a mixed happy and sad emotional state. There are more upbeat songs lik Dream on and I Feel Loved that make the listener want to move in the way that DM so amazingly does.
Songs from this album weren't played on the radio as much as songs from other albums because this album doesn't have the immediate grabbing popularity of songs that make the radio. I, personally, am sick of popular radio and its search for faddish and similar songs. However, listening to the Exciter CD a few times straight convinces me that there is as much depth in the album as in any other of their albums. Any DM fan should own a copy of the CD and will enjoy it. If you are new to DM start with one of their more mainstream ablums and discover the unique style that is DM.

4 out of 5 stars On Top Of Your Wreckage We Stand!.......2005-06-17

Ah, this record brings back some of the most vivid memories of my 37 years on this planet. Where to begin?

Summer, 1985. My dad had cancer and was in the hospital in St. Louis. I was a hundred-and-fifty miles south in our little hometown of Poplar Bluff. I would drive once every week to St. Louis to visit. I bought this on my very first trip to see him.

This was highly, highly anticipated by me and my cohorts that summer. Metallica's, "Ride the Lightning" was almost a year old and Slayer's, "Hell Awaits" had just been released, as had the debut by Exodus. What on earth would LP number three from Ottawa's finest bring? Word was that they were wimping out... After hearing a track on Music For Nations, "Metal Zone" comp, I was pretty sure that wasn't the case.

Although not the groudbreaking landmark that my friends and I had hoped for, "Long Live the Loud" is quite pleasing. Maybe I was a bit let down...I had built this thing up to immortal proportions in my little head.

Essentially, the same style as the first two. A bunch of proto-power-thrash with loads of double-bass drumming and banshee wails from Dan Beehler, atonal screeeeeeeching, ala Greg Ginn, from Jon Ricci, as well as bulldozer bass backlash from Alan Johnson. Side Two is a bit more proggy, (Heh, heh, heh, heh, heh...) with "Wake Up Screaming" moving through several tempos and stolen Sabbath ideas. "Born To Die" and "Victims of Sacrifice" plod and pound along at mid-tempo, barely escaping devolution into "boring," but manage to keep their heads above putrid water. All the rest thrash and flail along like Motorhead and Saxon trapped in a British Mk. II tank being pushed by an out-of-control steam locomotive that Lemmy can't get a handle on.

Guy Bidimead, who had recently manned the wheels of steel for the "new" songs on Motorhead's, "No Remorse" comp, lends his production skills here. The result is noisy and thinner than one would like, but still barely containing the thrashing rage these guys were capable of stiring up.

In the end, Exciter never falls prey to their lack of skill, songwriting ability, botched production or horrifically cliche lyrics, simply because the performance is so over-the-top and contains SO MUCH energy. Laugh all you want, but you'll sift through 1,000 bands or more before you find another with the rawr, manic energy these guys had in their glory days!

1 out of 5 stars Please Mr. Waters clear this up..........2005-04-14

I got the cd today and compared it to the bootleg, which is around since a few years. The back of the cd states that Jeff Waters has remastered the disc and so I was listening and trying to hear the difference. I simply did not find any. The same goes for the other re-release "Heavy Metal Maniac", it even has the same plops like the bootleg version. Where is the remaster gone? Blown in the wind? I wonder why Megaforce itself does not at all give us any information about the re-releases of a - for this genre - legandary band. Take a look at the Megaforce website and you will find - NOTHING. Nothing but announcements for upcoming Anthrax and Overkill re-releases but Exciter does not seem to exist in the labels schedule. Also their shop doesn't list it. Only place to find it is the history.

Very strange.

So I wasted my money for this crap, which I already had. My opinion.

The music itself is awesome like it always was but the release a shame. This band would deserve more respect.

Sad.

4 out of 5 stars This is very good 80's straight up pounding metal.......2007-02-09

I felt compelled to write a review of this when I saw just one person had done so (thanks for getting things started man). This music absolutely rates more than one review. If you are a fan of 80's Metal this is for you. You WILL like this music. The vocs are clean - powerful singing; just the drummer doing a very good job of belting it out. The drumming also is powerful as is the guitar and bass playing. They do not sound like they are trying to copy anyone. Exciter alternates between medium tempo metal to speed. They never go as fast as possible or as slow as possible (whatever that means). Also, they don't try too hard to impress only to come up short - they pound their music out with conviction. I was a fan when they were putting their albums out and was surprised that they got "left behind." It just occurred to me - if you are a fan of Raven or Saxon you WILL like Exciter - Raven and Saxon also seem to have been "left behind." Sadly, the music biz only had room for so many bands - Mettallica, Megadeth, Slayer, all bands that I love - but other bands tried and tried but just could not get noticed. Exciter is not power metal or wannabee metal. It is heavy metal that you simply will enjoy listening to - you may occasionally grit your teeth, jump up and down, and forget what it was you were just doing . . . and say to yourself "this is some damn good metal!" I don't give it 5 stars because it's not a classic. But it is very, very good metal.

4 out of 5 stars Thicker on all layers.......2006-09-15

For some reason Exciter fans consider the band to have faltered with this release. I actually totally disagree. I actually believe the band got better with Unveiling the Wicked. Don't worry, I will soon say why.

One thing why I view this album to be better than their previous 3 efforts is for the fact guitarist John Ricci departed. Personally I found his departure the best thing for the band. Not that I didn't like their first three albums, but his guitar playing was rather hum-drum and repetitive. This is where Unveiling the Wicked is better as it introduces new guitarist Brian McPhee. McPhee is a far better guitarist than Ricci the guitar solos are oh so much more fleshed out. It's like McPhee brought new life to a band that was wallowing in repetitiveness.

The album opens with Break Down the Walls, one of Exciter's best songs altogether. It opens with a cool drum intro and then jumps into a great guitar riff. McPhee does a great job at overlapping the rhythm and lead guitar sounds that make this more pleasant to listen to than past Exciter efforts. Beehler does some grand screaming on this track and the solos are just great. Can't get enough of this song!

Brainstorm is a little instrumental that leads up to the song Die in the Night. It's not bad but I tend to hit the skip button on this track to get the next song. Die in the night again as a great guitar riff with cool rhythms and a catchy chorus.

The fourth track I Hate School Rules was the albums one and only single and ironically the bands worst song on the album, let alone one of the worst Exciter songs of all time. Frankly it was written to appeal to those young Exciter fans out there by going against school authority. It's fine for young boys, but for grown men this song is a joke. This song brings the album down a few notches for me.

Shout It Out & Invasion/Waiting in the Dark are both mid paced songs and that latter song has some great slower guitar work interlaced within the song. Living Evil is a slower tack reminiscent of Pounding Metal on Violence & Force. It's actually better than that classic Exciter tune do to a more fleshed out guitar sound.

These three tracks are all decent lead ups to another great song, Live Fast Die Young. This song absolutely has a great galloping guitar riff by McPhee with great screaming vocals by Beehler. It's arguably the best song on the disc. Just a monster of a track. The album ends on a perfect not with Mission Destroy

Other than the lame track I Hate School Rules and a cheesy album cover, this album is pretty much better than all of Exciters previous albums on every level. The songs are better structured, the guitar playing is better, and the production is crisper. I personally would consider this album to be one of Exciter's highest point and it's a shame not more agree.

5 out of 5 stars MOST UNDERRATED METAL BANDS AROUND.......2005-11-07

Awesome metal album of the 80's. Fast drumming, loud guitars and screaming vocals. This is what heavy metal is all about, but one question ? This CD is digitally remastered from what ? You can clearly hear in the background the original source which was taken from a record album. What happened to the original tapes ? Better than nothing I quess, once the music starts you can't hear the record sound and they did a good job of drowning it out at the end of each song. Still worth the money. I have a few cd's that were taken directly from a record album and remastered to cd. Anthrax "Fistful of Metal" was one.

Great album, just as good as their first. This is true metal.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Thrash! DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION THOUGH!.......2005-12-23

EXCITER-"Violence And Force" LP(1984) is one of the true early thrash metal classics of the 80's. It is an essential addition to any true metalhead's collection. Unfortunately, this CD is NOT the definitive version of this Canadian masterpiece. The fifth track on the original LP "Evil Sinner" is MISSING from this CD version. It wouldn't be such a big deal if we were dealing with a weak song, but "Evil Sinner" is my FAVORITE track on the whole album and it is inexcusable that it was left off. "Evil Sinner" features one of the most over-the-top vocal performances in metal history. Truly screaming SO high that even Rob Halford and the boys from Judas Priest would run for cover. So just wait until a complete CD version of "Violence and Force" is released, or better yet, pick up an original on vinyl or cassette. DO NOT MISS OUT ON THE SCREAMING WRATH OF THE EVIL SINNER!!! Long live Dan Beehler!!! Rivaled only by Larry Portelli of BLESSED DEATH for sheer screaming OTT thrash vocal mayhem!!!

3 out of 5 stars Perfect album cover. Good album.......2005-11-17

This was from way back in the beginning of extreme metal before it degenerated into a subcategory of pop.

I have to say this is probably the best album cover ever made. The pink fingernails pushing back the door. The black glove trying to enter. The blood coming down and the broken lock.

It is so simple and implies so much.

But it implied a little more than the band lived up to.

During this period of time, extreme music had very little rules or formulas. And each extreme group brought their own ideas and style to the music they created.

Exciter's problem is they never fully escaped the hair metal influences they obviously were trying to evolve from. The vocals are screechy and tend to become annoying very fast.

They were faster than mainstream metal yet I would still say they were short of properly being classified as thrash.

They were actually best when they slowed things down and created more simplistic catchy sounds such as "Pounding Metal".

I really feel a lot of pain in seeing this album cover. It really is a masterpiece of what an album cover from this era should look like. It really is a shame to be wasted on good but mediocre material such as this.

3 out of 5 stars Hey Jeff Waters..........2005-02-25

What moron decided to release this disc without the complete track listing? The omission of songs on a disc that's only around 30 minutes long is inexcusable. After waiting for nearly a decade for this album to be released on CD, I was disappointed in a major way that the song "Evil Sinner" was omitted. I'm sorry I wasted my money on this version, especially if there's a complete version just a few months away from release. C'mon, Megaforce, grow a brain!

5 out of 5 stars Diamond in the rough.......1999-10-04

As another reviewer wrote, this CD is indeed a perfect example of a nice surprise. I bought it for Pornstar, which I heard on cable radio, and have found that I love most of the tracks. A staple in the car and as MP3 at work. All of my friends who've heard it bought it too. It's a perfect party CD -- chilling or dancing.

5 out of 5 stars This is great !.......1999-07-01

This Cd is one good example that surprises still exist in the musical word. Punchy musics, smooth jazz, funky groove, all in one great album. The samples are of high quality, the sound is excellent, in short, this Cd deserves a little more recognition.

5 out of 5 stars This is a terrific CD!!!.......1999-04-30

Very smooth CD. You are able to get your groove on with this. "Feel what you know" and "My funny Valentine" are my personal favorites. I highly recommend it!

2 out of 5 stars oh man... rehashed with a "new" twist.......2005-07-29

hate to say it, but this album pretty much sucks!! you should not tread on classics. the problem is that these songs did not age well.. terrible lyrics aside, this singer tries too hard to spruce up these songs. very easy stuff to play and very blahh! the saving grace in exciter was always dan beehlers screaching voice. thats what added some energy. but without him, this is seen for what it really is...crap...
sorry guys, used to love these songs, but i think the bad production on the early releases may have helped! and the fact that the band is empty in terms of new material is sad... think its finally time to hang it up john ricci! it was never that great to begin with. the goal should be to GROW!!! pass...
PS- 2 stars is because of the memories... not this...

4 out of 5 stars some good some bad.......2004-12-20

Best thing about this cd is the choice of songs....they really did choose probably the best Exciter songs. The production is not great, but this CD is very heavy, fast, and the songs are great.
The only original member is John Ricci. I have like Exciter since 1983, but only the original lineup. This is the first I have heard them without Dan Beehler singing. Belanger is a very talented singer, but a bit too Halford/Udo for me....he gets too "opera" sometimes, but still not bad. The drumming is very strong too. John Ricci plays both bass and guitar. The bass is not much of a factor here...you don't hear it much. Now his guitar playing....Ricci is one of my favourite players of all time, but I find that he has lost some of his soloing technique. He seems to struggle a bit....if you compare the original recordings to these ones, the original solos are far better...heavier, more powerful etc. But in the end, these CD has got me back into Exciter and reminded me of how good a band they were/are.

5 out of 5 stars The best Exciter record EVER!.......2004-08-01

Vocalist Jacques Belanger has brought this group of Heavy Metal Maniacs back from the dead...on the last couple of studio releases and this "greatest hits' disc he elevates what were somewhat dated metal anthems into classics.

John Ricci proves that he is one of the founding fathers of thrash metal, and plays non stop power chords like mad.

If you liked the old EXCITER stuff, you're going to love the recovered stuff, it's killer....

4 out of 5 stars Just the beginning..........2004-07-23

Exciter's current line-up has been stabilized with this current studio effort! The album brings a fresh and modern sound to a mix of thrash-metal classics! Without a doubt these hidden treasures should be exposed to the metal fans at large. This album is only the beginning, and I look forward to Exciter's next full length studio effort. Long Live The Loud!!!!
