5 out of 5 stars Rich and Jacquie at Their Best.......2003-11-27

The Kerrville Folk festival has an annual songwriting contest. It's one of the better known and prestigious awards. Two of the songs on this album finished first and second in 1998. Small Potatoes, and this album in particular, is that good.

I first heard "1000 Candles, 1000 Cranes" when Rich and Jacquie sang it in my living room. They brought tears to my eyes. It's not exactly an anti-war song; it's a lament for the consequences of war, and offers a glimpse of reconciliation that is deeply moving. In just a few words, it acknolwedges and accepts some of the worst and best of what makes us human. The song took second place.

By contrast, the title track is an utterly charming waltz, sung in a kind of dysfunctional counterpoint that dances around itself. The painfully shy couple of the song (and on the cover) unknowingly reflect each other's thoughts until, against the odds, they are dancing in step. The lyrics are simply perfect. The song took first place.

Small Potatoes is a delightful live act, polished but still personal, and have an easy rapport with their audience. See them live if you can. And enjoy this album. Pop music doesn't have to be as vacuous or vicious as 90% of what's broadcast. Listen to this album and you'll see that I'm right.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, profound, and very BIG!.......2001-03-08

I had the pleasure of hearing Small Potatoes perform with folk-singer great Tom Paxton. I immediately purchased this disc after the performance, because I was so struck with this duet's versatility, humor, and profundity. This particular disc has songs that range from diabolically humorous "Waltz of the Wallflowers" -- pay attention to the very small parts) to the moving and bittersweet "1000 Candles, 1000 Cranes." The latter song covers the bitterness of a U.S. mom who lost sons in World War II, and then melds into her eventually meeting a Japanese mom who lost a daughter to the atomic bomb. It is one of the most beautifully performed songs of reconciliation that I have heard in a long time!

The vocals are great here -- there's good down to earth folk singing, but some really inspired "do-owp-a-do" improvisation, and a rip-roaring rendition of Celtic gibberish that, while still gibberish, sounds just gorgeous. On stage, these performers had a lot of fun, in spite of their occasional serious songs, and it comes through on this disc. This is great listenting for those car drives through annoying traffic congestion -- just putting a whole new attitude in your mind. The recording quality here is very good, with clear sharp sounds (as in hearing the little slide on the guitar string after it has been plucked). I wish this couple all the best in their musical careers, there is nothing "small" about their music!

5 out of 5 stars Small Potatoes?? I think they're Big Potatoes!.......2000-12-25

Small Potatoes is (are?) fabulous. They are both incredibly talented. Jacquie's voice is a God-given gift and Rich is one of those rare musicians who can get emotion out of six guitar strings. If you listen to their CDs and especially if you seee them in person (DO IT!) you will probably need a tissue to wipe away the tears that come from the emotional impact they make on you or from laughing at some of their funny stuff. The rest of their music is merely incredibly wonderful.

Having met them, I can say they are incredibly good at making music, they're very entertaining and they are really nice people.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the title piece.......2000-10-20

While the title song for this album is a Kerrville Songwriting Contest winner and absolutely awesome, one should not overlook the other great songs on this album. Waltz of the Wallflowers was written by Jacquie (half of this duet) and did take 1st at Kerrville, but 1000 Candles, 1000 Cranes was written by Rich (the other half of the duet) and came in second during the same competition. It says a lot that both halves of this duet beat all of the competition in the songwriters' competition at Kerrville. If you have money for only one new CD, make it this one.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD by two talented artists.......2000-07-07

I bought this CD after watching this couple perform in a church parish hall. They were wonderful. "Waltz of the Wallflowers" is a true-to-life rendition of the angst of adolescence. The performance itself is a waltz also as the two performers are each singing his/her own wallflower song. The results are amazing. Other songs on the CD are either quite touching or amusing.

3 out of 5 stars Dokken -The 5th studio album.......2007-07-06

I have to say that this was not a wonderful ablum as others were from years past, but it wasnt absolute garbage either. None of the songs on here are as enjoyable as 'Just got lucky' or 'dream warriors' and seem to me that they are lacking a very important element and that being energy. I know it has a lot to do with the 90's influence and the disbanding of the guys but I still dont think that should be an excuse. But on the positive side there truly are 3 solid and good songs on here including 'shadows of life', 'Too high to fly', and 'The maze'. Each song is tolerable and good in its own sense and I think that there is a possibility it could grow on me. But it did saden me because I really am a hard core dokken fan and I knew Don and the guys were capable of a better record.

5 out of 5 stars Dokken's Best CD.......2007-01-01

I realize that I am 12 years late in writing a review of this album, but I thought it was worth my review. Dokken has been and always will be my favorite band. Collecting all the albums and listening to them countless times hopefully gives my review some crudentials. I like the overall heaviness of this cd, lots of great grooves, great lyrical hooks, and great melodies. I think what really stands out on this album is Jeff Pilson. This is the first Dokken cd that you can REALLY hear the bass. It was always there in the background on the other albums, but it really stands out on this cd. Also Pilson's backround vocals really shine on this as well. Another thing I like about this album is that they took there songwriting to another direction. Most of Dokken's lyrics are about love and broken love. Think of all their singles/videos and the word "love" is in 80% of them. If you are a casual fan looking to get into Dokken discs, my suggestions would be 1)Dysfunctional 2)Tooth and Nail 3)Hell to Pay and 4)Back for the Attack, I look forward to "Lightning Strikes Again" which should be in 2007. The Lynch/Pilson cd is excellent as well and worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2006-07-08

I found this a great album after such a long absence. Like most have said, classic Dokken sound, but a little heavier 90's feel to it. Great CD for any Dokken fan@

4 out of 5 stars Their best '90s album!.......2006-02-19

I have to say that next to 1987's great Back For the Attack, this is my second favorite Dokken album. Easily their best '90s album. I enjoyed every minute of it when I listened to it in 1995. George Lynch's guitar leads are strong and aggressive. They keep a very hard edge on a majority of the songs. Best songs are the ones in the middle. Although they've had some conflicts on member changes and how they wanted the music to sound, Dysfunctional is a perfect album title to describe their music transitions. Please get this album soon!

5 out of 5 stars A SOLID album..........2005-08-11

Some of the negative reviewers of this album need to remember that this album came out in the dark days of grunge. Hats off to Dokken to releasing an album that actually broke from the main stream of those days and ROCKED! It's not Tooth and Nail by any means, but it still rocks pretty hard. Lynch and Dokken-no matter how much you two don't get along with one another, you need be together because together you make some great music. Oh by the way, George Lynch is THE MAN when it comes to playing a six string. Get the man in the Rock and Roll HOF where he deserves to be! Dokken, Lynch, Pilson, and Brown no matter how Dysfunctional they all are need to get back together and turn out some more albums!

4 out of 5 stars worth buying.......2006-08-01

This would be the music you'd hear while riding a merry-go-round, if merry-go-rounds weren't for children, but for demented sideshow freaks with very good taste in music.

Really though, I was very pleased with this mix. There's punk and some almost cabaret sounding stuff, but at the heart this is electro. There's some seriously involved production work on here. This isn't a happy rolling mix, much deeper and darker, but only slightly sinister. Don't be scared off though, anyone who's been paying attention this this style for the last 5-6 years will be proud to have this in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars The S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorder) Holiday Album !.......2005-05-20

A bizarre, downright subversive yet wonderfully wry (awry?) concept for a Christmas album, subtitled "Music for Your Misery." Consists of "heavy" and morose non-holiday classics from composers such as Wagner, Holst, Bach, Sibelius, most dealing with death or war. Definitely not your typical holiday fare, which I think is the point. If you're tired of all the phony goodwill and psuedo-cheeriness of the Christmas season and would rather defiantly wallow in your holiday funk, then this is the album for you. Or, makes a great stocking stuffer for members of your family you'd like to permanently scare away! A Christmas album you can play all year long....... cheaper than therapy!!! An ingenious, darkly humorous novelty Christmas album---with some great classical music to boot! Worth it for the title and tacky cover photo alone ! ! !

I picked this one up a few months ago, and it's great. Both Teen Idols songs are catchy, and the Squirtgun stuff isn't that bad either. Backstabber from Teen Idols is also on "Nothing to Prove", but this is the only place you'll here Shadowman, which is an amazing track. This is a limited edition disc, and a must have for Teen Idols Fans.

I an ex-pat Aussie living in Canada and first fell in love with this duo back in Oz. Their first album when re-released for NA market included one of thier best tracks - Lucky Me.
This follow-up album I purchased on a trip back home.
"I'm Just a Girl" is typical Bachelor Girl magic. Great tune, spot on lyrics reminiscent of Buses and Trains.
"Can't Wait to Meet You" is my favourite track. Catchy number with excellent upbeat lyric. Definitely a "repeat 1 track" item on this album.
All tracks are winners and this album is never out of my CD player for long.
