5 out of 5 stars This cd rocks.......2006-06-23

I don't care about straight edge hardcore XXX or whatever that [...] is. I have no opinion either way on their message. I just like the music and vocals. You people think too much into things. I like this because it sounds good. It's got great riffs, solid vocals, and decent production. This is the band that hatebreed tries to be.

5 out of 5 stars The best Straight-edge Hardcore CD ever made..........2005-11-14

I'm almost certain that this is the best straight-edge CD ever made, and it is one of the best hardcore CD's of any variety as well. Without question Earth Crisis's best, "Destroy the Machines" is the one that put them on the map, after only moderate success with "Firestorm," another hardcore classic. From "Forced March" to "Fortress," the entire CD blazes with originality musically, and remains forceful and pointed in its lyrical assault on everything from those destroying our rain forests to those taking the lives of the other living beings on the planet for their own gain. While some may disagree with the lyrics, there is no denying that musically, this is one of the finest hardcore efforts ever produced, from one of the finest hardcore bands ever to exist, and without question the best (and highest selling) in Victory's catalog. I am neither a vegan nor vegetarian; whether or not that gives me the right to enjoy this album as much as I do remains a solid argument. However, even while maintaining an agnostic position with the album's messages, it is still one of my favorite albums and has been for the last ten years.

1 out of 5 stars This is garbage.......2005-06-09

I never thought I would see the day that a band with such heavy guitars sucked so badly. I wish I could take all these little faux leather wearing punks with me to a tribal whale harpooning somewhere and watch them cry. Or maybe leave them out in the rather large territory of a cougar and see how much they want to liberate the animals once the big cat has them tagged. And the worst thing is, they try to look tough. Try is the key word. They try to be heavy. They try to be thought provoking. I agree that there is cruelty when it comes to animals in the food industry and medical industry. Sure, things need to change a bit. But if these idiots want it to change, then they better go to those "evil" labs and volunteer themselves to be injected with toxins and experimental medicines in place of those rodents and hogs. Be first in line punk, or keep your mouth shut. Standing on a soapbox doesn't do anything but let us know how physically incapable you veg heads are for the most part. Usually with your pet dogs, who are so liberated that you have them on leashes and obeying your commands. Anyways, this band stinks more than is necessary, the good news is, they're breaking up. I never thought that a drop d guitar and gutteral growling could sound whiny.Adios.

Okay, I normally abstain from entering these online reviews, but something about the previous remarks just rubbed me the wrong way; this, then, is not so much a review of the above album as it is a response to "Cotton Hell."

First of all, your ignorance is astounding, but put into context it's entirely understandable. Your statements are all I need to see exactly who you are. You're a vegetarian. Great. Good for you. I bet you're also a white male between the ages of 16 and 18 who still lives with his parents in a suburban, middle-class home. So you can afford to be a vegetarian or vegan or whatever you like. You regularly hit up your local venues where your local scene has seven bands in a row playing drop-D crunch anthems in which they tell others how to live their lives. You probably still mosh. But I don't want to make fun of you; that would be too easy.

Let's look at the environment. If you've actually made it through junior-high level sciences, you by now have at least a small grasp of evolution and the natural workings of the world. Everything lives, and everything dies, and through this basic process life is able to continue. Death begets life. In addition to this basic fact in its smallest sense, everything eventually goes extinct. No species will live forever, and that includes humans. And let me tell you now, one of the leading causes of extinction is overpopulation. Too many individuals = not enough natural resources = death. Wildfires are a natural phenomenon in parts of the world as they clear out the old and weak to make room for new growth.

So you like Earth Crisis because they're straight edge and vegan. But their CD comes in a plastic case. Plastic! This paragon album of environmentally friendly screams and power-chord sludges is packaged in a fossil-fuel based polymer that adds to the depletion of the world's oil supplies, and doesn't decompose, just taking up landfill space. This CD case has at the very least led to the direct death of one animal. Not to mention has probably provided the income for graphic designers, factory workers, producers, etc. who probably gummed down a greasy double cheeseburger while working to get this thing finished up by the release date.

Don't most people become involved in these underground scenes because of a desire to break away from the mainstream? And the problem with the mainstream is that everyone is encouraged to conform. Well why then is it okay for a hardcore band to scissor-kick on stage to guttural proselytizing? Shouldn't differences and variances be embraced in a subculture that claims to abhor a jock-like groupthink mentality? So you don't want to eat meat. That's fine. But it's pretty damn self-righteous to claim that your view is correct for all 6-billion-plus humans on this earth. Go into a starvation-ridden sub-Saharan African community and tell them why it's immoral to eat meat. You'll look like a jackass.

All that aside, my young, naïve, foolish Cotton Hell, there is one thing you said that makes me want to vomit half-digested meat right down your throat. That you could possibly call someone like myself "racist" toward vegans and vegetarians. First of all, of what "race" are you speaking? From what country/ethnicity are vegans descended? And-here's the important part-when was the last time you were attacked, lynched, sprayed with a riot-hose, shot in the head, or imprisoned simply for abstaining from meat? When was the last time a tyrannical imperialist rounded up six million vegans, worked them to starvation, gassed them, and threw their bodies in one giant grave? You need to choose your words much more carefully, or maybe read a book or something. You sound like an uneducated rich kid trying to fumble his way through complex ideas. The world's not black and white; there will always be variables and exceptions. But as long as you get to hang out in your parents' house, in your comfortable bedroom listening to an array of Victory Records bands trying desperately to convince yourself that you actually enjoy tofu, the suburbs will remain a wasteland of stale, cyclical ideology. I'd bet all the money I have (which isn't much) that you'll be eating meat again by the time you're 25.

If you need me, I'll be outside the steakhouse, smoking a cigarette, waiting to sober up before I drive home.

1 out of 5 stars Straight edge is a failure.......2005-02-14

Why do I say that? Because idiots like Karl and his buddies in Earth Crapsis cling to the idea that abstaining from alchohol, drugs, sex and meat makes you a superior person to the rest of the world. The only problem is, sxe followers are not superior. After 20 years of this stupid and arrogant counterculture's existence its been clear that the only thing straight edge kids have to offer is making the same 10 hardcore songs over and over.

Sxe people like Earth Crisis and their idiot fans claim they don't do drugs, well, they're wrong. Anger is a drug, and it is very much the drug of choice for the straight edge crowd. Instead of utilizing their clean lifestyle to make something of themselves, all they do is walk around with scowls on their face and XXX tattoos on their arms. They wallow in their own anger and self revulsion. I have never met a chest thumping straight edge hardcore kid who went to write a good a book or get a decent career or start a family for all his rantings about being "positive!, but I know tons of malcontents who cling to these anger-perpetuating hardcore ideals and do nothing but go to hardcore shows or put together hardcore shows just so they can jump in the pit and indulge themselves with more anger drug.

It might also be interesting to note that Ian McKaye of Minor Threat/Fugazi, the accidental founder of the straight edge movement, claims no allegiance with idiots like Earth Crisis.
