Their last album may have given them a certifiable radio hit, airtime on VH1, and a Kidz Bop tribute, but listening to the follow-up to 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News, you might get the sense that the members of Modest Mouse are flinching at the spotlight. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, the group's fifth full-length release, is denser than its predecessor with tunes that seem willfully harder to penetrate. Even the addition of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to the line-up seems incidental, as Modest Mouse's off-kilter sound stays largely intact. But keep listening and it becomes obvious that the band hasn't lost any of his pop bite, especially midway through with a sweep of terrific songs like "Missed the Boat," "Education" and "Little Motel." It's hard to tell if there's another "Float On" in the bunch. In fact, the first single, "Dashboard," is one of the weakest Isaac Brock has ever penned. With Shins James Mercer adding lovely vocals to "Florida," however, it hardly matters. --Aidin Vaziri

Fabulous.......2007-08-01
Personally, I think it's the best Modest Mouse CD by far and can listen to it over and over. It gets better everytime I listen to it.
I like the way this music sounds........2007-07-27
After listening to the songs on this album I have decided I like them all. This album is different than other albums by the same band (Modest Mouse), and should be treated differently even though some people will treat it like an old friend and try to cut its hair while they are sleeping though they don't want a haircut. Trust this album and it will treat you right.
Fire this up!!.......2007-07-15
Looking for something new, and at the prompting of my brother who is a big fan, I got "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank", Modest Mouse's fifth studio CD. The sound ranges from dancey rock to reflective epics.
I like it, especially the more uptempo numbers like the dance/rock of "Dashboard" (hello Franz Ferdinand!!), the racuous sing-along "Florida" (with what can best be described as barking/yelping vocals), "Education" (nice disco-like bassline), and my favourite, the incredibly catchy "We've got everything" (similar to "Dashboard").
On the more downtempo end of things are the country tinged "Missed the boat",the even more country-ish "Spitting venom" (which takes a rockier turn about midway through), the drawn out. atmospheric "Parting of the sensory", "Fly trapped in a jar" (the horn intro sounds like a buzzing fly, nice tempo shift midway), the gentle "Little motel" (which builds up in intensity towards the end), and the lovely "People as places as people".
Closing the disc is the upbeat rocker "Invisible" with snarling/howling vocals, rolling drums, and cutting guitars.
Like the song says, "Fire it up"!!!
Great Album, got me into Modest Mouse.......2007-07-09
This is the first review I've bothered to write for any product on a retail website, so that must be an indication of some sort. This is one of those albums where I actually like almost every song. Before this came out, I scoffed at my best friend's new-found liking for Modest Mouse. I found their older stuff a bit too outlandish (which is saying something after hearing this album) and fragmented.
The songs on this album just flow so nicely. My least favorite songs on the album are "Education," "Fly Trapped In A Jar," and "Parting Of The Sensory." The first two have the fragmented style and high-pitched, cracking vocals of Modest Mouse's other albums, and the latter has a very "experimental" feel. There is a lot of clashing of instruments; it sounds somehow less structured than the rest of the songs (often this is good, but it lacks structure, rather than being free of it, if you know what I mean).
Right now I'm listening to "Spitting Venom," one of my favorites on the album. The quick change from a steady strumming to full riffs and singing is certainly one of Modest Mouse's strengths.
It's OK for MM.......2007-07-08
It's not better than M&A, Long Drive, or LCW, but it's worth picking up. In time my rating might improve, but it seems just as likely that it will not.
I wouldn't start here, I'd start with M&A and LCW, then pick up Long Drive. Good News is also decent.

Some music is celebrated for its elegant subtlety; Pink's slams you over the head. Four albums in, she's not changing her formula. I'm Not Dead touches on bulimia ("Stupid Girls"), war-mongering politicians ("Dear Mr. President"), teen angst ("Conversations With My 13 Year Old Self," "Runaway"), overheated pickup artists ("U + Ur Hand"), and gross materialism ("I Got Money Now"). None of it, in other words, is for featherweight listeners. Then again, none of it suits eggheaded college tastemakers either. Where this translates, then, is with those willing to man up and embrace what makes Pink Pink: her spellbinding ability to render rebelliousness in all the many colors of the rainbow. Neil Young-inspired acoustic guitar is sketched into "The One That Got Away," but it's just as quickly scribbled over by Joan Jett-style ranting (on "Long Way to Happy") and Janis Joplin/Joss Stone-fueled howling (on "Who Knew"). Even R&B gets its turn ("I Got Money Now"). The album also includes appearances from the Indigo Girls, who duet on "Dear Mr. President," and Pink's father, who joins for the hidden track "I Have Seen The Rain." Pink pulls all of this off, and probably without even breathing hard. She's not dead. --Tammy La Gorce

Pink Rocks It.......2007-07-17
First, I think Pink just has a raw power to her voice that so many of the other pop starts don't have. Second, she sets herself apart by having tracks with relevant topic, a couple of ballards and then tunes you can dance too. Lasly, she deserves at least music award nominations.
love it, I've played it a lot!.......2007-07-14
LOVE HER! Tracks 7 8 and 9 are continually played in my car. I love the whole album including the song with her dad (no credit though, why not?). She's real, shares a lot in her lyrics, and real artists are hard to come by these days.
Fantastic discovery!.......2007-06-28
I never was a fan of hip hop/dance/rap music, so I never really paid attention to Pink. I'll be the first to admit that was a big mistake. I heard "Who Knew" on the radio and was absolutely bowled over! I immediately went out and bought the album based on that one song. Turns out the album is full of fantastic musical gems. I didn't realize she changed her style to more of a rock/pop style. "Stupid Girls" is a great social statement (and totally made me think of Paris Hilton). "Who Knew" is one of my favorite songs of all times. "Long Way to Happy" is so catchy and awesome, it's my 2nd fave on the album. "Nobody Knows", "Dear Mr. President" and "I Got Money Now" are all great slowed down songs. I almost cried the first time I heard "Dear Mr. President". Extremely political and so very true, beautifully sung and deserves a lot of attention. "U + Ur Hand" and "Leave me Alone" are fun and full of attitude.
I'd like to add that not only is this album awesome, but I finally found out that Pink is an incredible vocalist and performer. Based on that, I ended up buying Misunduztood and there are several songs on that album I loved as well. I just wish I had noticed Pink long before this! Buy the album, you won't be disappointed!
Fantastic.......2007-06-10
Great album! Pink has really shown some great range! This cd is way beyond some "Stupid Girls".

The soundtrack for the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie was infamous for having been whipped up rather hastily. For the sequel, Hans Zimmer takes the reins and comes up with his best effort in ages. Things start off with a nice cello theme for Johnny Depp's character, "Jack Sparrow." After that, it's high gear all the way, beginning with "The Kraken," on which Zimmer unleashes gales of symphonic aggro. Even when he closely follows what Hollywood execs clearly believe are set-in-stone rules for contemporary soundtracks, he throws in interesting wrenches. He does cram in both wailing female vocals and stomping percussion in "Dinner Is Served," but then the track abruptly turns into the kind of demented waltz you usually get from Danny Elfman. As usual with sequels, winks to the first movie pop in and out--the Black Pearl theme reappears in "I've Got My Eye on You" and "Hello Beastie"--but overall this album is more consistent. At least until you get to the final track, that is, a pounding offering by melodic-trance overlord DJ Tiësto. Pirates, wave your arms in the air like you just don't care. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
Captain Jack Sparrow is back for more action and adventure on the high seas! Once again thrown into the world of the supernatural, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) finds out that he owes a blood debt to the legendary Davey Jones (Bill Nighy), captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. And as if this weren't enough, the captain's problems manage to wreck the wedding plans of a certain Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightly), who are forced to join Jack on yet another misadventure.
Soundtrack features original score by Hans Zimmer plus a bonus remix track by the world-renowned DJ Tiesto.

I have all three soundtracks and this is the least pleasing of the three. There are still a few moving tracks, but overall, it left me wanting. The third cd is the best of all!
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.......2007-07-07
Of the 3 Pirates cd's this is my least favorite, the first being my favorite because of the rousing music, this is good, but not great. Not quite as good as the PotC At World's End. However, to get the full impact of Pirates, I recommend that you get all three cd's.

Who says discipline is a bad thing? No one who's heard American Beauty, the Dead's greatest studio achievement. Showcasing 10 concise, country-rooted gems that sound equally good whether you're hanging on the front porch in the afternoon or nursing a bottle after hours, this one could win over many an anti-Jerry. Bewildered by loss both personal and social--the hippie dream was quickly crashing by Beauty's 1970 release date--the band put its querulousness ("Box of Rain") and wry humor ("Truckin'") into the service of a masterwork. The most impressive cut of all may be "Ripple," Garcia's spiritual credo. --Rickey Wright
Album Description
Expanded & remastered (HDCD) version of the band's 1970 classic featuring many of the Dead's best-known songs plus 6 bonus tracks 'Truckin' (single version) & 5 live tracks 'Friend of the Devil', 'Candyman', 'Till The Morning Comes', 'Attics of My Life' & 'Truckin'. Digipak. Warner/Rhino. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
a marvel of songcraft for fans of any type of music.......2007-07-29
A classic. I only wish there were more albums in the world like this (Workingman's Dead is close). Great melodies, unforced harmonies, cool subject matter. I've given this album to so many people who thought they hated the Dead and they all loved this album.
"What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been".......2007-06-18
This isn't in the same league as the previous Workingman's Dead. But like that album, American Beauty is a must, even if you're not a Deadhead, and I'm not one. The bad news is that they stretch a couple of these songs to the breaking point (Attics of My Life; Candyman), something they wisely avoided on Workingman's, and while I can't say I hate Till the Morning Comes, it doesn't really impact me all that much.
Now for the rest of the album, which is excellent. The back-porch folk Friend of the Devil is my favorite Dead song ever. The philisophical Ripple, pleasant opener Box of Rain, fine country-rocker Operator, groupie ode Sugar Magnolia, the oddly eerie Brokedown Palace, and the self-mythologizing rocker Truckin' (you know, the one with the famous double entendre "What a long, strange trip it's been!") make up the rest of my favorites. You'll note that's the rest of the album, which basically means "this is a very good album!" Because it is. Far better than the "classic" Live/Dead. This and its predecessor are two essential albums.
True beauty...........2007-04-20
Many love to talk about the Grateful Dead and their marathon concerts. Having seen them 12 times (including the last 2 shows Jerry Garcia did), I can attest to their great live prowess. But they were just as good in the studio, and this album proves that beyond any doubt. This is my favorite Dead album, a country pop masterpiece. The songs here have surprising depth and substance. Robert Hunter's lyrics are the best he ever wrote, and the tunes are absolutely beautiful. This album sounds more countryish than anything (especially on the ballads), perhaps because the Dead were listening heavily to Merle Haggard and country radio at this time. This has that "Bakersfield" sound (as an amazon friend told me), and that's why it resonates so deeply with me, because I love that sound. This album has more depth than current country music. It's a lovely album, arguably the Grateful Dead's best....
a rock masterpiece........2007-03-22
this is the grateful dead's masterpiece. can't be touched. robert hunter's finest batch of lyrics; songs populated by outsiders and misfits doing their thing. divine melodies and harmonies, loads of toe-tapping feel good music. a couple of breathlessly beautiful slow numbers to boot. "truckin'" is as catchy a number as you'll find anywhere, with its propulsive bass rhythms carrying along robert hunter's great lyrics about a drug bust. the song also sports stinging electric guitar licks by garcia, and a chorus that enters your head and stays there long passed what a reasonable leaving time should be. this is great american music. a masterpiece. a classic. not to be missed.
CLASSIC.......2007-03-21
This is by far the best of the dead, no doubt about it. Even if you are not a deadhead or you dont like them that much, get it anyway because some of the best music of the century is on here.

You'd think there wouldn't be much more to present by a songwriter who recorded three albums in his lifetime and has been dead since 1974. However, interest in Nick Drake's riveting music has grown enormously in the new millennium. Rarities were added to a number of posthumous collections, but with Family Tree his estate has brought forth an hour of music that predates his first album, Five Leaves Left. This set illuminates Drake's musical background, with his mother and sister appearing, and even Drake himself on clarinet for a Mozart trio. He covers traditional numbers as well as songs by Dylan, Blind Boy Fuller, and Jackson C. Frank. There are clear links to his own early compositions, including a couple early versions that appeared on his debut. Some of this has circulated on bootlegs over the years, but here assembled and sonically polished, it radiates with warmth. Recorded in casual circumstances, there are bits of chatter and laughter between songs, painting a picture of a happy, loving home scene. --David Greenberger
Customer Reviews:
fans will love this.......2007-07-26
It's hard to listen to Nick Drake and not be reminded of those VW commercials where "Pink Moon" played while hipsters rode through the dark in their cabriolet. Nick Drake has the voice that you hear in your dreams at night. His new release, Family Tree, contains songs he recorded with his mother and family before having a record deal. Nick Drake masterfully fingers folk songs on his guitar and sometimes the piano. I have always admired his skill of making a few instruments sound like many, but what I found most impressive were the tracks where his mother and sister sang.
Music obviously ran in the Drake family, and it's difficult to listen to the CD without feeling that you are in the Drake living room yourself. Although I found Family Tree to be a fascinating look inside the Drake household, I would only recommend it for die hard Nick Drake fans, and would recommend newcomers to start with Bryter Layter or Pink Moon.
Family Tree.......2007-07-26
If this is going to be your first Nick Drake album I recomend you buy insted Pink Moon.
This is a recopilation of Drake's first recordings in his home and a friend house, the quality is no the best but I guaranty that you forget about that becuse of his powerfull and full of soul voice, there are some tracks of his mother singing that gives you an idea to where he got his musical liking and also a duet of him and his sister
The packages is a soft one with a large booklet with writings of his sister and friends, it's rather moving and it also has some pictures of the family.
So if you want to know more about Nick Drake I recomend this album becuse it has, even then when he was starting, a lot of fealing and something that good voices of today fail to have and that's heart.
I am not an old person talking, I have 24 and I recomend this to you hopping that Drake's magic remains live for a long time, this is ageless.
Come Into The Garden.......2007-07-14
If you're seeking this out, I don't have to tell you what a special & rare talent Nick Drake is. Suffice it to say, this one is for die-hard fans. Those seeking proper introduction should proceed directly to Way To Blue or Pink Moon.
One of the most prized recordings in my collection has long been the Nick Drake bootleg, Tamworth-In-Arden 1967/68. I usually avoid buying boots, but couldn't resist the plethora of completely unheard/unreleased songs. Now, most of that material has been lovingly compiled (with a few surprises, as well as omissions) & cleaned up considerably in terms of the sound quality. Half of the songs are written by Drake & half are rather obscure covers, including 3 songs by the legendary Jackson C. Frank. Fans of Drake will hardly be disappointed.
Among the self-penned selections, the real highlights are the haunting "Leaving Me Behind" and "Come Into The Garden". "Rain" and "Bird Flew By" reveal a talent that is nearly fully formed. "Strange Meeting II" & "Been Smoking Too Long" were included on the Fruit Tree box set appendix, Time Of No Reply. Both are welcome here. (According to the liner notes that collection is soon to be re-released).
More than likely, fans will not be as thrilled with the two songs, written & sung by Nick's mother, Molly. But to be frank, I like them both even if they are a bit jarring amidst the rest of the set. Its nice to hear where Nick got some of his talent from.
Lovingly compiled & with copious liner notes (Nick's sister, Gabrielle's are quite moving) this is certainly worth the price of admission for longtime & new found fans of this brilliant and truely unique artist.

"Casey Jones you'd better watch your speed!" - Dead for Non Deadheads.......2007-06-18
If you can't stand the "cosmic" stuff, this and American Beauty are the Grateful Dead albums for you. This is a classic country-rock album - one of my favorites in the genre, along with Harvest and Beggars Banquet. Eight tracks, and seven get my full blessing: the best are the anthem Uncle John's Band, the Dylan-esque Dire Wolf, appropriately boogieing New Speedway Boogie, the longish folk song Black Peter, and of course the infamous Casey Jones (the one that goes "Drivin' that train, high on cocaine"). There's not a sprawling, sidelong jam in sight - everything's under six minutes, in fact. And it's very enjoyable roots music with lyrics that are a lot more interesting than the '60s Dead's acid-induced ramblings (Easy Wind, Uncle John's Band). The only song not of note is High Time - otherwise, this is an essential release. Even for those who don't like Live/Dead and the others.
The Classic GRATEFUL DEAD Album........2007-05-28
Since I'm not a diehard DEAD fan, but I wanted to buy one album...I took the advice of a reviewer who stated that Workingman's Dead is THE one to get, if you get only one!
All the titles are long-time classics now; "Casey Jones" being the most popular of them all.
This is probably the best GRATEFUL DEAD studio release.
'Nuff said?
4 1/2 stars.......2007-03-22
one of the grateful deads two great studio albums (the other being the sublime masterpiece "american beauty"). this is a mostly gentle countryish affair with acoustic guitars, fine harmonies, and easy flowing rhythms. only "easy wind," a blues number (and a song with hypnotic drum patterns, by the way), and the classic "casey jones" have electric guitar, to my recollection. the album opener "uncle john's band" is one of robert hunter's finest lyrics, and a dead classic, as well. little bit of spanish feel to garcia's guitar work on that one. the remastered version definitely has an much improved sound over the original cd version. so get that one. of the six bonus cuts, only the live version of "uncle john's band," is really essential. the other five add nothing, and i feel actually detract from, the excellence of the original 8 tracks. a small quibble though, as the bonus cuts cost you nothing extra, and you can always skip 'em. all in all, a fine, very enjoyable studio set, with two bonafide classic songs. highly recommended.
Fantastic Album.......2007-01-24
Can't say much more than the other reviewers, this is an excellent album

Readied in the early '90s (but not released until the summer of 2007) this multi-tracked document of a strong twenty-song, two-hour set by the Dead from February 1971 in Port Chester, NY brims with subtle pleasures and myriad rave-ups. The sound is immaculate throughout, thanks to the group's adoption of radical technology for the time. The band was at a creative peak at the start of '71; both Workingman's Dead and American Beauty had been released the previous year. There are a few points where the group seems a tad lead-footed, but this is understandable as second drummer Mickey Hart had left the previous day for a several year hiatus after it was discovered that his father had ripped off the group while acting as their manager. Overall, the band 's clearly moving towards a more mean and stripped-down sound. And the rocking numbers like "Bertha"--debuted at this gig, along with a handful of other numbers--do benefit from this. To top it all off, the songs sung by Ron "Pigpen" McKernan here are among the strongest the blues interpretations ever recorded. There are a lot of Dead shows out there, and some have historic value, while others just sound great in terms of the performance and fidelity. This show has the full trifecta; it's not to be missed by even the casual 'head. --Mike McGonigal

About Time They Got It Out.......2007-07-26
A very good recording & show. Now, if they can just do the night before too. In case you don't know, this is the 1st show after Mickey Hart chose to take his couple of year break & the night before is the last show he did. The band plays JUST PLAIN GREAT considering the abrupt change they had to deal with. Really nice first set & great second set.
(Actually, 3 and 1/2, or 3 and 3/4 stars).......2007-07-25
After many years of delay, "Three From The Vault" was finally released. Nice digipak design, nice booklet, nice front cover with emblematic "steal your face" logo. As always, outstanding sound quality (sometimes I wonder: did The Dead have the best sound engineers of those times???).
Now, regarding what brings us here, the music, this is an obviously transitional Dead. This recording is, most of all, of historical interest, due to the fact that it was the very first concert after the departure of Mickey Hart and that many songs were premiered that night. Of course, these historical facts affect the group sound. First of all, Bill Kreutzmann had no trouble AT ALL with supporting the band alone. In fact, he started playing better than ever. Regarding the new songs, well, they are played generally in a rush, the lyrics are not always remembered (although it also happens with songs which were not new) and the band interaction does not flow freely as always. They generally sound instable, a little bit akward, but that is absolutely normal, of course. Anyone who has ever written a song knows it takes time to find the suitable vibe for each tune.
When playing the "old ones" ("That's It For The Other One", "Smokestack Lightnin'", "China Cut Sunflower"), the Dead do it with the usual absolute authority.
So, even though it does not seem to be a mind-blowing recording (an many other Dead releases), it is still extremely interesting to hear the band in the process of changing, learning and taking new risks. Far from anchoring in audience favorites, chances are taken and the future is set off. But, as we know, the Dead were always looking for something new, and once these songs were properly learnt, they were already writing new ones with new challenges. Just an test to perceive of the ever-evolving nature of the band: compare the version of "Playing In The Band" of this release with the one in "The Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack".
Once again, a delightful and interesting record.
Not quite five stars...but..........2007-07-22
Well this isn't a super performance from the Dead, but it has it's moments. It's incredible quality sound, and Bob Weir's playing in high in the mix, which I appreciate in the 71-74 years.Deadheads will enjoy his lead work while Jerry plays rhythm.
Smokestack Lightnin and Easy Wind are great, and this from a guy who usually skips those long Pig raps.
I've always enjoyed 1971 "bar band" dead with its one drummer, and country and blues sound, as well as some of it's best material fresh, and it's young Jerry Garcia voice. If you liked "Ladies and Gentlemen", you're sure to like this one. The performances aren't as legendary, not quite as many awesome tunes, but it sounds better and it's a rockin good time.
I know why this took 15 years to release........2007-07-22
There seems to be a little "mystery" about why this release took so long. Phil Lesh didn't like it and nixed it for release back in early 1993. Copies had already been made up and David Gans was even playing it on his show. Basically, what happened was, at the time, Phil didn't want to use any shows that had gone into already released albums and Dan Healy only wanted to use multi track tape so this show (from a run)which was recorded for Grateful Dead(aka Skull & Roses) but not used, was pulled out. This was the second night. The first night found the debut of 6 songs(Bertha, Greatest Story, Johnny B Goode, Wharf Rat, Loser and Playing In The Band) and was the last show for Mickey Hart(Ned Lagin also played Keyboards at that show). This was the first show with just Billy again since September 1967. This show also found 2 new songs(Bird Song and Deal) being pulled out as well as repeats of some of the new stuff from the night before. When it was brought out in Dupree's Diamond News that songs like Bird Song made it's first appearence here, Phil said "Yeah, but the problem was, it sounds like the first". Later in the year, the band asked Dick to start picking 2 track tapes for release and Healy was fired early the next year. As for the performance itself, I like it. The Truckin' blows away the so so version on Ladies And Gentleman. The Pig Pen songs are strong. Many(including Phil) have said that spring tour of 1971 might have been Pig's strongest period. Dark Hollow is always welcome and a nice That's It For The Other One. Yeah, I like it but then I liked it back in 1993 too!!!
Big on highs and understandable lows .......2007-07-13
Probably deserves 3 and a half stars but that isn't an option.
I won't try and turn anyone off this release because the "good" stuff is hot! I personally prefer full shows and am ready to accept that not everything works on every show but that doesn't justify an automatic 5 stars for every release based on the "good" stuff.
Is it one of the better GD live releases?? Not entirely - read on. The sound may be crisp and clear but some of the performances are a hard listen - PITB shocked me in this embryonic and sloppy version however, it's understandable that new songs have to be road-tested.
Yes, i know that they played a heap of new, still undeveloped songs that would turn into monsters in years to come - It's amazing that some of those very tracks like PITB, GSET and Deal ended up as grand as they did because listening to these versions you'd have thought they'd be dumped for eternity by the end of the month. Thanks to GD for NOT doing that.
There are heaps of positives to be drawn from this release - i don't beleive i've heard a better Smokestack, Hurts Me Too or Easy Wind. Cumberland Blues is always a "fun" track even if lines are forgotten. Did the band have an energy drink (or maybe something different??) before playing Bertha - sounds like it - gets you moving. Continuing on with that energy is China/Rider - a stand-out sounding more confident with age (and will get better after '71). Other One is my favourite GD song (along with UJB & EOTW) and hardly ever disappoints - this version is no exception. Wharf Rat rides on the crest of raw emotion, flows, and ultimately drags you in. Truckin' and Loser also deserve worthy mentions.
A single cd version for the average listener would be 5 stars and i've made a compilation of the highlights just right for the car (apologies for leaving out johnny b. goode which is one of the best i've heard but it didn't fit on the cd-r). This is it:
1. cumberland blues
2. hurts me too
3. bertha
4. smokestack lightnin'
5. china cat sunflower
6. i know you rider
7. easy wind
8. that's it for the other one
9. wharf rat
Was it worth the purchase - ohhhhhhhh yeahhhhhh!! They can keep releasing mixed-bags of goodies like this and i'll keep buying them and asking for more! Yummy!!

Quite an awesome CD- Covers everything from the early hits to later music- Takes you from "Truckin'" to "Touch of Grey" all with great digital quality- A must for anyone checking out the band's music now- All the Deadheads already have it-
Like it alot.......2007-07-03
It is great car music. Not "jammy" so I don't have to worry about breaking into dance while driving! Would be better if it did have a live tune or two.

The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion).......2007-05-12
This album does not exist for the converted. It's not here for the tried and true Deadhead. You've already got all of this, most likely in a far superior live version from a sound board tape.
This collection exists for that guy who has heard "Touch of Grey" and "Truckin'" on the radio and wants to own them, but doesn't want to wear tye-die. It exists for that young kid who has heard legend of the Dead, but was too young too see them and missed the boat. It exists for the folks who are curious about their music yet feels intimidated by the vast amount of material available out there (106 officially released titles to date, not including all the tapes out there...) .
This disc exists for these folks, and in that light it works very well. Sure, it's incomplete as any single-disc best of by a band who recorded for 30 years would be, but it covers all the major bases. And it does so better than the "Skeletons...", "...Long Strange Trip..." and "Arista Years" compilations do, and is far-superior in sound quality than any of them. Above all, it whets the appetite for more.
So for the uninitiated, this is the best place to begin your long, strange trip. For some, this may be all you need. But chances are you'll find yourself wanting more...

This is the value of working at cross-purposes: The Smiths were Morrissey's excuse to undulate his wry, disaffected lyrics, and Johnny Marr's vehicle for his sharp, chiming, pop songs. Their favorite kind of compromise made them essentially a singles band, and The Queen Is Dead has a couple of their best (notably "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side," one of the greatest pop expressions of the Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name). But it also has some wonderful compromises of different kinds: the bizarrely romantic "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out," and "Cemetry Gates," where Marr covers up for Morrissey's floridity with shimmying rockabilly. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
Perhaps The Best Album of the 80's.......2007-06-25
The Smiths really are the greatest pop band of all time. The Cure is my favourite band, but The Smiths are undeniably the best. I discovered "The Queen is Dead" when I was twenty (in 2000), and it served as my introduction to the band. I really was not a keen fan of the whole Brit-pop thing and thus had really glossed over this guys. I bought the album after 'Frankly, Mr. Shankly' made its way into repeat on my brain. My first response was disappointment with the rest of the album. Little by little different songs grew on me, and within two moths I was obsessed with the record. That summer I did not by another record for 4 months, and usually I buy about 20 records during the school break. Morrissey is the only singer whose words have the power to haunt me during a day. Right now 'The Queen...' is once again on constant repeat in my car. All the Smiths records are incredible and their abilitly to capture the hearts and minds of audiences really is unparalleled.
If you don't have this record and you loved early U2, New Order, Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Depeche Mode records, you need this in your collection. If you love the so-called 'indie-movement' of today and like bands like Death Cab for Cutie, Xiu Xiu, Interpol, Sufjan Stevens, you need this album. Actually you'll want this album. And I'm jealous of anyone who gets to fall in love with this album for the first time. But, then again falling in love with it all over again treats one pretty well too.
The Smiths and a VW Bug.......2007-05-10
1987 all over again...Me and my friend Jennifer, the only two "freaks" in town spent our entire summer beating around town in her vintage VW Bug listening to this cassette (remember cassettes?) This album was a turning point for me in what kind of music I was listening too. Every song on this disc is perfect. The music and lyrics are witty to heart wrentching. Morrisey and Marr had that chemistry, that little magic that showed itself in a big way. Anyone wanting to know more about The Smiths should start with this album. Personally I think we need a revival. So get this disc and if you don't have a vintage VW Bug any car will do, pop it in roll down all the windows and cruise away.
Close to perfection .......2007-04-05
Not only was this the soundtrack of my high school years (along with Husker Du and the Replacements), but it's so great to go back and listen to it and find that it stands up so well after all these years. Not a bad song in the bunch (although Vicar in a Tutu was always a bit strange), with the title track, Cemetry Gates, and I Know It's Over being three of the wittiest, most brilliant songs I have ever heard. They've influenced nearly every British band that came after them (and many American bands, too) and I hope some day my (currently) 2 year-old son will be able to appreciate how much they meant to me.
The Queen Is Dead, Long Live The Smiths.......2007-03-16
Depending on your point of view, The Smiths' 1985 album Meat is Murder may or may not have been a sophomore slump. After all, their second release (Hatful of Hollow) was a collection of rarities and singles. While for most bands this would be a pointless delaying tactic, for The Smiths it simply confirmed them as the UK's best new band. Perhaps this made the disappointment of Meat Is Murder all the more inevitable, but that was all quickly forgiven and forgotten with the band's 1986 masterpiece The Queen Is Dead.
This album includes some of the band's very best singles equally great album tracks. Morrissey and Marr were almost always at their very best, but on The Queen Is Dead they outdo even themselves. Never one to shy away from meglomania, Moz compares himself (perhaps aptly) to Joan of Arc on the insistent "Bigmouth Strikes Again", and again sings of homosexuality in a not-so-cryptic fashion on the wonderful "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side". Together, these songs show the two sides of Morrissey's lyrical coin: in the case of "Bigmouth", the lyrics are vivid and poetic, while the lyrics to "The Boy With the Thorn" are simple and repetitive, but just as penetrating. But as great as these singles are, "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" is perhaps the band's greatest track ever. It was not released as a single, but it was featured on the compilation Singles because the disc would have been incomplete without it. (Really, has Morrissey ever more succinctly summed up his worldview than when he said "To die by your side, well the pleasure, the privilege is mine"?)
When one can listen to an album and look forward to the hits and non-hits equally, then the album is a truly Great one. "There Is a Light" is the best example on The Queen Is Dead of The Smiths' ability to achieve this feat. However, this brilliant record is filled to the brim with songs of comparable quality. "The Queen Is Dead/Take Me Back to Dear Old Blightly" is one of the rockingest songs The Smiths ever recorded. It is also the rare instance when the band uses six-and-a-half minutes to full effect. "I Know It's Over" is the first of two songs in which Morrissey places himself in a graveyard. In this case, his empty bed serves as his cemetery plot. The other is the jaunty "Cemetry Gates", his prefered place to spend a sunny day pitting his beloved Oscar Wilde against Keats and Yeats. (The song's somewhat lame moral to not plagiarize is hardly it's strong point.) There are also several moment's of comic relief, including "Frankly Mr. Shankly", "Vicar In A Tutu", and "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others". The second of these tracks, in which the title character represents all those who wish to be themselves without apology to anyone else, is probably the best of the three. It is also permits Johnny Marr to indulge his fondness for rockabilly.
Given the short career of The Smiths, it is easier to pick one of their albums as their best one. The consensus is that The Queen Is Dead is just that. I agree, but their first and last albums are also 5-star records. Interestingly, Morrissey and Marr have both said that "Strangeways, Here We Come" (their last one) is better than their debut and The Queen Is Dead. Whatever the case, The Queen Is Dead is one of the greatest albums of the 80s, as well as one of the greatest of the two decades that have passed since its release. Anywhere - except for Meat Is Murder - is a great place to start with The Smiths, and you are bound to end up with everything if you like what you first hear. Apart from one of the compilations (Hatful of Hollow, Louder Than Bombs, Singles), The Queen Is Dead is probably the one that you will most often listen to in its entirety.
Fleeting and for All Time.......2007-01-11
Originality.
So many artists seek, or even claim, to be doing something original, something different, something special, something unique. Yet few artists in the history of popular music attained a level of originality that matched that of the Smiths. Morrissey (vocals), Johnny Marr (guitars), Andy Rourke (bass) & Mike Joyce (drums) brought together a variety of disparate elements--a love of rockabilly, golden-era pop, classic rock, and a healthy dose of punk--to create something beautiful and new, strange but familiar, fleeting and for all time.
_The Queen Is Dead_ is their masterpiece.
Morrissey and Marr produced the album themselves, surrounding the listener in warm sheets of guitars with a solid layer of bass and drums underneath. Morrissey's voice is right where it should be, not over the top of the mix, but truly stabbing its way right through the music, with lyrics as brutal and as honest as a knife.
Indeed, throughout the album, Morrissey is on the attack, slicing away at the monarchy ("The Queen Is Dead"), business associates ("Frankly, Mr. Shankly"), social ideals about physical desire ("Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others"), the institution of marriage ("I Know It's Over"), plagiarists ("Cemetry Gates"), and organized religion ("Vicar In A Tutu"). The blade also turns on its owner, as Morrissey dissects his own lonliness ("Never Had No One Ever"), his troubled childhood ("The Boy With The Thorn In His Side"), and the very act of verbal expression itself ("Bigmouth Strikes Again").
The Smiths provide the perfect musical atmosphere for each of these lyrical worlds, be it the frantic, powerful rock of "Bigmouth Strikes Again," the heart-breaking balladry of "I Know It's Over," the folky, breezy jangle of "Cemetry Gates," or the manic, spitting punk of the title track.
And then, there is the penultimate track, the album's climax, and arguably one of the most gorgeously tragic moments in all of popular music: "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out." The guitars chime and glisten like the lights of a late night highway. The bass and drums keep driving forward, pushing and searching. All the while, Morrissey, ever-reaching, always-yearning, demands ("take me out tonight / where there's music and there's people / and they're young and alive"), reveals ("driving in your car / I never never want to go home / because I haven't got one / anymore"), despairs ("and in the darkened underpass / I thought Oh God, my chance has come at last / but then a strange fear gripped me and I / just couldn't ask"), and hopes ("and if a double-decker bus / crashes into us / to die by your side / is such a heavenly way to die").
If you can't feel this music, this moment, there might not be blood running through your veins.

A great Live show!.......2007-02-22
I found the record version of this in my basement. Sadly, for about 3 years I could not listen to it and other amazing grateful dead records because it seemed that no one in america had a record player anymore. But I finally bought the cd and good god Is this good! it truly is an awesome piece of music, it can stand the test of time, and it is really good to listen to for whatever occasion. This is by far one of the best live albums the dead released, it is up there with "Live/dead" and "truckin up to buffalo july 4th 1989" But it as soon as humanly possible.
An interesting live album despite the overdubs.......2006-10-13
This is a great live album dispite that it doesn't really represent the period right. Spring tour 1971 featured alot of Pigpen tunes in the setlists but only one appears here. Due to Pigpen's illness, most of his parts are erased and overdubbed by Merle Saunders. Vocal overdubs were also added. On all of the lp copies you hear Phil singing backing vocals on Bertha. For whatever reason, on all the new remixed, remastered and newly released albums for this period this also happens. Buy this disc with Ladies and Gentlemen and get a good dose of the Dead from spring'71. Not Fade Away/Goin' Down The Road is one of the all time best.
A Mixed Bag, with Moments of Greatness.......2006-06-02
For their second `official' live album, the Grateful Dead switched gears a bit from their previous endeavor. While "Live/Dead" accentuated the jamming aspect of the band, spreading five songs over four sides (the three tracks on side four really constitute one performance), this collection goes for a breezier feel. Here, eleven tracks fill out four sides, allowing room for only one meandering jam ("The Other One"), which does little to add to the legacy already created by "Live/Dead". When performing their own original material, this album succeeds completely on its own terms. "Bertha" is one of the chirpiest jam tunes the Dead ever came up with - enough to inspire Los Lobos to do a faithful cover version - while "Playing in the Band" gives Bob Weir the opportunity to indulge in some rock and roll. It's only when the band attempts to incorporate songs previously made famous by others that the album veers out of bounds. "Me and Bobby McGee" is a pointless endeavor, especially in light of Janis Joplin's definitive version, while there really aren't too many people who would consider a Grateful Dead version of "Johnny B. Goode" to be essential listening.
Grateful Dead works mostly because it presents a fairly accurate overview of the band's strengths (and weaknesses). Energetic `cover' songs such as "Mama Tried" and "Big Railroad Blues" provide an opportunity for the band to get down to basics and play like a fully integrated bar band. "Wharf Rat", meanwhile, shifts moods, sounding simultaneously desperate and hopeful, allowing the band to grease its improvisational tendencies to full effect. Most telling is the jam that ties Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" to the public-domain folk song "Going Down the Road Feeling Bad." This segue pretty much summarizes the best bits of the album, combining instinct, tradition and energy into a unique synthesis that transcends either basic song. Coming on the heels of two exceptional studio recordings, more people were listening to the Dead, and this album does an excellent job of retaining old fans while seducing new ones. Combining elements of their `traditional' jamming with a batch of nicely constructed new songs, Grateful Dead does a laudable job of offering something for everybody.

....THAT OLD COUNTRY FEELING........2006-04-06
In the sixties The Grateful Dead were the premiere group in the scene of Psychedelic Jam Rock. They made their way up the ranks by playing infamous live shows that were famous for "the vibe."
What was the vibe? Well basically the band and the audience would become one, sometimes on the music (which was excellent at times) and sometimes on loads of drugs (in these cases the music was nothing more than a few intangible notes repeated over and over.---see LIVE/DEAD)
By the early seventies however, The Dead had reached a new phase. They found that, a little bit of proffesionalism, and a little less partying, was actually making them successful. In the same year the band released their two masterpiece albums WORKINGMANS DEAD and AMERICAN BEAUTY, and launched what became their first major (major) tour. This all happened years before I was even concieved, but when you look through my DEAD collection, this is the era where I hop on board. The laid back, country style, that far better showcases the bands talent, over the sixties psychedelia. GRATEFUL DEAD (aka SKULL and ROSES) was the bands next release, and really basks itself in country feel. The whole thing was recorded live, but stands to be the first published recording for every track contained within. Excellent stuff, some of The Deads best, for sure.
Right off we get the now bonafied classics BERTHA, MAMA TRIED, ME AND MY UNCLE etc.
Bob Weirs Dead introduction of PLAYING IN THE BAND, and there are also a few cover songs... ME AND BOBBY MCGEE (a different kind of version, nice) JOHNNY B. GOODE, and BIG BOSS MAN (W/Pigpen on vocals for that-yeah)-
This should be part of your DEAD collection, I'd say. If you like the country side of THE DEAD, without all the space out jams, this is for you.
Jerry's 'On'.......2005-09-03
I read somewhere that Jerry said this record epitomised what the Dead were all about. and after hearing it again ,re-mastered after all these years I agree .I had this on vinyl while living in London in the 70's(a double LP) I liked it then and I love it now . Jerry's guitar never sounded better (especially on the remaster -great job whoever is responsible )Song selection is what they were doing back then .This is the disc that has the famous , Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away'' seguing into Woody Guthries' , "Goin Down The Road Feelin Bad" and the superb Big Railroad Blues(was that Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers?) .All tunes contain astounding band performances Kicking off with "Bertha" ,and Jerry's axe shines throughout . I would recommend this to anyone new to the Dead ,as a great place to start. This remastered version contains two extra tracks that could have been left off .. The Coasters' Im A Hog For You Baby, and Buddy Holly's Oh Boy! .. 'Hog' is the better of the two , but neither of these performances enhance the disc .. but, there again .. some Deadheads might be ecstatic that this extra material is on here.
