The appropriately titled Swansong was the last album Carcass recorded before their untimely demise. Booted from Columbia Records and unable to get along, the band packed it in last year, ironically after recording the most commercially viable disc of their career. Swansong is a fist-pumping crunch-fest that combines lacerated death metal vocals with mainstream rhythms reminiscent of vintage Megadeth and Iron Maiden. From the witty "Keep On Rotting in the Free World" to the atmospheric "Child's Play," Carcass have crafted one of the strongest bridges to connect underground metal to the mainland. Too bad they won't be around to see anyone cross it. --Jon Wiederhorn

One of the most beautiful voices i've ever heard, so calm like a soothing whisper to your ear, or a tickelish wind running through your hair. Swansong For You is an absolute must have, this album should not be overlooked.

4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2006-10-24

As long as you don't go out of your way trying to overanalyze, seek for deep meanings or some sort of philosophical statement within Swansong, what you have here is definatly an entertaining metal album.

The technical skill is not particularly impressive (with some recycled guitar solos), some metal fans might be scared off by the sometimes comical, and at other times hardcore/punk inspired lyrics (mainly centering around the decadence and apathy problems in western culture) and this is definatly not the type of music you can get angry or inspired by - but the album has some value as being just plain fun to listen to, with some very addictive grooves and great sing along parts.

You'll find yourself singing along to Swansong in your best imitation Carcass Jeffrey Walker voice, especially to the very catchy "keep on rotting in the free world" and "generation hexed." I dont really understand why some Hessians think Carcass 'sold out' with this album, I never really took them as a serious underground force in the first place that held some sort of sacred 'trve kvlt' vow. Carcass was always about headbanging, and they continue in that tradition with Swansong.

Just don't come into Swansong expecting the same band from Symphonies Of Sickness; the creators of the goregrind genre now sound a lot more like a traditional heavy metal band influenced by mainstream rock, punk, hardcore, death metal and grindcore. The end product sounds quite unique, although it almost loses its underground edge. Listen to Swansong to be entertained and the tendency to call Carcass sellouts slowly evaporates.

Also i'm pretty sure there is several parts in Swansong where a cowbell is used, and you can't beat that.

5 out of 5 stars swansong rules.......2006-01-31

It's not Reek or Symphonies or Necrotism or Heartwork. It's Swansong! And it's not grind or death or melodic death. It's M-E-T-A-L. Dig? Sick riffs, great singing, and awesome production. If songs like Tomorrow Belongs to Nobody, Cross My Heart, Don't Believe a Word, and Black Star don't rock your world, then your world doesn't rock. End of story.

3 out of 5 stars Polarized.......2005-09-19

if you take Swansong on it's own as an album...it's pretty great. the songs are razor sharp with hooks and melody. the production is perfect. their is alot of energy and passion captured and it's a killer musical ride. the 70's hard rock influence is heavy on this record, but it's still crunchy and a bit thrashy.
now...if you compare Swansong to Necroticism or Heartwork, then this album doesn't stand a chance. but listen with open ears and you'll find the Carcass spirit buried in these songs. this album took me many years to appreciate. give it a chance. keep on rotting...

2 out of 5 stars Better than most bands, but still poor for Carcass ..........2004-12-24

Let me start by saying Carcass is one of my personal favorite bands, and way cool in an underground way. Once you get into this band you're hooked as you start realizing all the different layers of creativity and occasional bits of genius. With that being said this effort is pretty poor for Carcass. Almost everything that made this band intellectually interesting is gone and replaced with the kind of simplistic music most garage bands can play. Indeed, I've heard this album a thousand times ... from a thousand generic opening local bands.Quite frankly I'm glad they broke up after this album, and a part of me wishes they broke up just before. Don't give up on Carcass though, just get one of the better earlier albums.

4 out of 5 stars Not Heartwork, But Not Bad.......2004-11-02

I admit I haven't heard the entirety of this album, but I do believe that I've heard enough to provide a more intelligent opinion than the closed-minded imbeciles running around yelling "OMG!!!!1111 Carkass soold owt!!!1"

No, Carcass didn't sell out. If they had, they wouldn't have been playing metal at all (Well, maybe nu-metal, but an argument can be made that that isn't really metal). And while I don't like this one as much as Heartwork (which I own and worship), I still would rather have this than a rehash of Heartwork. Why? Because there is no way they could have topped Heartwork, especially without Amott. There's also the fact that Heartwork really doesn't get old, and I could listen to it for an entire day if I was constantly in the mood for the same style of music. But this review isn't about Heartwork, so let me get back to the point. Personally, I respect Carcass for constantly evolving their style. The end result may not be my personal favorite from their discography, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate it.

Enough babbling about back catalogues...Carcass' take on the NWOBHM style is an interesting one. And while diehard fans may be a bit downtrodden that you don't need a dictionary to understand the lyrics, this album is not without merit. For one thing, the music has a nice groove to it, and Walker's beloved vocals provide an interesting contrast to the more melodic style of music being played here (think "Doctrinal Expletives" with a heavy NWOBHM influence).

While Swansong isn't the greatest Carcass album, it's still worth a listen. Just don't go into it expecting another Heartwork, and you may find yourself enjoying it.

5 out of 5 stars Get over it........2007-07-25

I love the entire Carcass library and "Swansong" is a nice and final addition. Don't be a lemming and follow what so called "hardcore" fans consider true metal. I love "Reek of Putrefaction" and while "Swansong" is definitely different, it still grinds and is absolutely worth a listen. CARCASS REUNION PLEASE!!!!

Wow. I am a really big fan of Carcass, in particular their pre-Heartwork stuff (though Heartwork was pretty awesome)but I did not like this album one bit. goofy song titles and lazy guitar noodling. I guess we are lucky they didn't continue on like this

Cellist and vocalist with indie stars Belle & Sebastian, Isobel Campbell has recently been plowing her own very engaging solo furrow with her band, the Gentle Waves. The follow-up to The Green Fields of Foreverland (1999), this album is full of delicately dramatic Scottish chanson. Campbell lets her soft voice swell on a bed of comforting strings, 1960s beat-pop horns, and tinkling harpsichord. Though the tracks are sensitive reflections on love, friendship, and childhood, they are never winsome. The sharp production and vivid arrangements give songs like "Falling from Grace" and "There Was Magic Then..." a rich, silvery quality. Swansong for You is the perfect chill-out record. --Lucy O'Brien

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful and sparse..........2003-03-08

Though many people tend to compare Bel's work on this album to her work with Belle & Sebastian, it's entirely different. She has made this album her own! Her airy voice and string arangements are soothing, and entirely different than the songs penned by Stuart Murdoch. I wouldn't recommend "Swansong For You" to every B&S fan, but if you enjoy soothing and light 60s style ballads, you might be pleasantly surprised.

4 out of 5 stars gentle waves indeed.......2002-04-29

I checked this CD out from my local library. I had never heard of Gentle Waves or Belle & Sebastion. Since I am 45, I'm not following any musical trends, but I hope this direction away from violent offensive and crudeness continues. When I first heard the singer, I thought of Astrid Gilberto from the Bossa Nova era. But since Antonio Carlos Jobim isn't writing the songs, they are a little less sophisticated. Nevertheless, Gentle Waves is a nice breeze that has come my way. Ironically, my father just died from old age and cancer. I brought "Swan Song for You" and played it for him while he drifted in and out of consciousness.

4 out of 5 stars let the good times begin..........2002-02-10

in this recording, bel summons all the beauty of simplicity, all the tweeness of the world's greatest indie record label, all the sweetness of a belle & sebastian song, and all the atmosphere of sitting in front of a cosy living room fire with a cup of ribena. with music like this, who needs belle & sebastian. well... we do, because b&s are wonderful. but this will hold us through until their next release.

2 out of 5 stars B&S, without the S!.......2001-06-04

So this album sounds like Belle and Sebastien, that you could have guessed from the singer's bio and the fashionably Smiths-esque cover art.

I don't think it's as good. In fact, I gave it a low rating for disappointing me badly. Here's what's similar: a delicate, candylike pop vocalist and cute melodic line throughout.

Here's what's missing: the loud part. Many of B&S's best tracks feature rich instrumentation (strings, horns) that builds intensity and energy as the song goes along. My favorite example is track 2 of the green album.

The verdict, then, is negative. It's derivative! Go buy _Strangeways Here We Come_.

5 out of 5 stars very sweet and haunting.......2001-04-05

Isobel,cellist/vocalist for Belle and Sebastian, steps off the ship a bit for her 2nd solo album and it sure is good-not that B and S aren't,but still-but that really is no surprise, huh?Great voice, great songs, and super good lyrics, not to mention gorgeous music.Lotsa strings and some horns fill the songs with such beauty.Very 60s-ish,and that's alright.
