3 out of 5 stars Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25

First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.

4 out of 5 stars It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23

Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."

His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.

For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.

Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.

He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.

A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars On connaît tous sa musique, beaucoup moins son nom..........2005-09-20

5 out of 5 stars Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13

This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Shot in the Dark.......2006-10-07

This is by far one of GW's best in my book. I've been a fan of GW since 1984, when the Black album came out and have been a fan ever since. I was totally amazed when Shot in the Dark came out. I was in the music store the day it was released and played the tape so much it skreeched. With songs like Shot in the Dark and Face the Day, it shows where the roots of Once Bitten, Twice Shy, Hooked and Psyco City stem from. If your a serious GW fan, you have to have this cd in you collection. With all this said you have to include the ballads Waiting for love and Runaway. Slower songs yes but what an edge they display. One of the 80's best recordings if you ask me. GET IT !

5 out of 5 stars A phenomenal early release.......2006-07-02

This CD is as mature and complete an album a young band can produce. The songs range from mellow to outright ballsy, and i agree that "Shot in the Dark" should be on the Greatest Hits collections. It truly is a great tune!

4 out of 5 stars Four and a half stars..........2005-11-15

Until recently, I only remembered having seen the front cover of this album in the mid eighties. One of my neighbours friends had it and he was a guitar player, as well. I just heard it a few months ago and now I've ordered the remaster (well worthwhile, especially from Japan, awesome sound). This is likely the most underrated and ignored CD's from Great White. It doesn't have as much bluesy flavoured tracks like "Twice Shy" or "Psycho City", but it has some of the best eighties pop rock you'll find. I count four tracks, the first two and the standouts "Shot in the Dark" and "Runaway" that make this exceptional. I can't understand how songs like "Save Your Love" or "Face the Day" (which is on this CD, even) and others are selected to the bands myriad of Greatest Hits collections and yet the song "Shot in the Dark" is overlooked. Let's put it this way, it's a simple opening riff, but it sounds great and the song, overall, is on the same level as "Rock Me".

Album Details

Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

4 out of 5 stars A brilliant, under appreciated album.......2007-01-18

The songwriting is wonderful. I came across a promo copy and neglected it for years; when I finally gave it some attention, I was amazed. I've since lost that copy, so I've just bought another. It seems to be out of print. It's a shame that no one seemed to notice this great album.

4 out of 5 stars Some of the songs are full of ideas.......2004-07-08

This might be too grim to be funny. "God Made an Angel" has some more already in the first verse, "Each one less perfect Than the one before." The second verse starts with:

      Malice in wonderland
      Days of guns and roses.

These songs from 1989 and 1990 have printed lyrics in the CD liner notes that show in depth knowledge of the intellectual issues of the times:

Lately she's been hanging out with that
      Cross-dressin counter-culture guru casanova.

The third song, "Two Medicines," on laughter and tears, places the final critique of anyone who takes this too seriously on a tombstone:

His final years were such a waste
That when he died his dear wife placed
      Upon his grave this epitaph:
His life was so funny he forgot to laugh.

I like the tension in "The Border Crossing." Most of the songs on this CD seem based in the blues, and it is rare for such a song to exude such innocence while admitting:

      I know I'm quite a mess
      If I were a smuggler

      I'd have much more finesse
Yes if I were a smuggler
      I'd breeze across this border
      My clothes a bit conservative
      My papers all in order.

The best criticism on the CD is the line "You had it right the first time" in the song "Big Shot in the Dark." The line "Back when money was the root of all evil" is also so good it is used twice; first, "Back before you finally grew up," and finally, "Now you just can't seem to get enough." This song makes being an adult about the last thing that anyone would want to be.

You used to feel like a babe in the woods
Livin out of your little gunny sack
You used to be a cry in the wilderness
      Now you're just another lumberjack

You had it right the first time.

The song "Dis...land (was made for You & Me)" has verses that end with "I'm going to Disneyland," "We're all going to Disneyland," so of course "And then we'll all be together in Disneyland." The serious side of this song is about some attempt to prove that nothing is sacred, but we will still be together in our kind of heaven. This is not the most famous song that ever used the line "I'm going to Disneyland."

There are a lot of lines worth liking in "The Little Things," especially:

      One never knows
      What one may be missin
If you talk to the flowers
      But you never listen.

4 out of 5 stars It should get a 5 star rating, but.........2005-07-18

It is a chopped and patched cd! It has two selections among others that were only available from a very obscure LP called 3 Great Bands, with Prado and Hirt. "Bluesy" features a smooth solo by the ever grand soloist for Mancini, Jack Sheldon, who also puts a very catchy "Lawrence of Arabia" theme ending. This is almost surely worth the price, but then listen to the Ellington tune "In A Mellow Mood" and you'll be blown away. Where these tunes come from is an even greater mystery to me...the # GB I told you about was only an RCA promo thing, and not a Mancini effort. So take this one and run because you'l not find these selections anywhere else! It is reminiscent of "Uniquely" and "Big Band'67" and as jazzy as Gunn and others of the early RCA genre. You'll love it, and the prices it is being offerred at is a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant techno album.......2003-12-31

Laurent's first proper album and it's not a bad one at that! Given that the album must nearing a decade and yet still sounds fresh is a good sign given techno's ever-changing nature. A must!

4 out of 5 stars buy and enrich your techno-house-trance repertoire.......2001-09-02

this is quite an old cd now but i find it much better than garniers newer cds. 30 is a good album but for me it lacks some good big fast beats, unreasonable behaviour is really strange: what i call experimental techno-drum&bass (have a listen to it and decide). as a fan of anything danceable (french touch, progressive, trance, funk-disco, dance, electro, house-hardhouse) i promise you won't dislike this album!

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece and definite buy, buy, buy!!.......2000-11-08

A stonking album every bit as good as 'Laboratoire' if not better. Garnier cements his place as the best and one of the most daring DJ's in the world.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A genius worthy of Weill...finally..........2002-04-14

Allfolter approaches Weill with the same no-nonsense, visceral and unsentimental clarity that is required of an artist creating Loge in Twilight of the Gods, along with the enigmatic sensitivy of the Act III Tristan.

Throw in the gift of being able to belt one out with the best of them and it works. It works Big Time. This man is a genius. Not even Lenya delivers the Bilbao Song so well -- and I felt, in 2002, that I was hearing September Song for the first time. There isn't one clunker on the whole c/d.

Magnificent. Who is this man? where has he been all our lives?
