If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of "The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars New to Sarah Brightman.......2007-03-12

I'm very new to Sarah brightman's music and I enjoy this CD. I think she has an amazing voice. Very talented young woman and this cd was very relaxing and joyful to listen to. I like to learn and heard more from Sarah Brightman.

3 out of 5 stars Stranger in Paradise - More Like Stranger in a Lost Cause.......2006-12-30

I'm not throughly pleased with this album! This CD is only good if you know how to dance in a Middle-Easters fashion. About half of each track is dominated by all orchestrations and no Sarah. Plus, Pop-Sarah isn't really for me. I much prefer the Classical-Sarah. Some of the tracks are okay, like "Harem", "The Journey Home", "Beautiful", and "Stranger in Paradise". Really, this is a good CD for your collection, but I wouldn't listen to it on a 24/7 basis.

5 out of 5 stars No voice like hers in the world.......2006-10-01

I own this cd. I saw her in person at the "Harem" concert. Never had I heard or seen any voice like this. What a performer, best concert I'd ever seen. Beautiful voice, I can never get enough of Sarah Brightman's music. It is so comforting at times. I have all her music and this cd makes you wonder, how can she top this? Thank you Sarah Brightman for giving us your beautiful gift of music.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Brightman, Her best CD........2006-09-18

Sarah is just the best, she can hit any note and her individuality shines on this CD. She sings "The Journey Home" from the musical Bombay Dreams and her voice just soars. "Harem", "Mysterious Ways" and "You Take My Breah Away" are songs that take me to dreamland. Amazing! A master piece!

In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah Chin

4 out of 5 stars Irish at it's best........2007-05-07

This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.

5 out of 5 stars Irish Magic.......2006-08-21

This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices, the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Just got your Kleenex.......2005-12-25

I suggest a box of Kleenex for each person in the room when you play this CD or VHS recording. Mom won't let me play it anymore because she...well, you know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2005-12-12

When it's cold and frightful here, I play The BOYZ!

So wonderful. So much fun.

Up here in backwash Maine, there ain't much, believe me. But these guys are great. Sincere, care about what they're doing, true artists.

Ah, to go to Ireland again. Well, not unless the price of natural gas recedes!

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Irish Tenors is just that!.......2005-01-22

This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!

Well worth buying.

Cassandra Wilson is a postmodern jazz singer, a conceptualist who sees no dividing lines between genres. If her career had commenced in the 1970s rather than the label-conscious 1990s she would have been marketed as a mainstream pop diva. Her magnificent voice and interpretive genius mark her as a jazz singer for the ages, however. She finds her material wherever her fancy takes her and remakes it in her own image, whether it be the country blues of Robert Johnson's "Come On in My Kitchen" and "Hellhound On My Trail," the soul of Ann Peebles's "I Can't Stand the Rain," the elegant R&B of Charles Brown's "Tell Me You'll Wait for Me," the melodic pop of Joni Mitchell's "Black Crow," and Van Morrison's "Tupelo Honey," or her own "Redbone"--and the title track, accompanied by steel guitarist Gib Wharton. --John Swenson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Repeatedly unexpected. Serious jazz remakes old favorites........2006-03-23

Repeatedly unexpected. Spare, care-ful arrangements, each specifically formulated for each song, each matching her rich, dark alto. First and foremost, serious jazz, but also something entirely different, reflecting an eclectic song choice (e.g., Robert Johnson, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Ann Peebles, herself). Sometimes a primal awareness, but mainly a remarkable artistic sensibility. She DEMANDS attention, completely remaking even old favorites into something totally new. S: tr 2-Come on in my kitchen; tr 4-Children of the night, tr 5-Hellhound on my trail; tr 7-Sankofa; tr 10-Tupelo honey.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet as Tupelo honey.......2004-11-23

Hands down one of the best covers of Tupelo Honey I've heard. For some reason this stands out as one Cassandra's best recordings to me. Great range of voice and songs in this outing.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best of the '90's.......2004-01-25

Of all of the vocal jazz albums released in the 1990's, this remains one of the best. Ms. Wilson shows tremendous range and diversity here: from a cover of "Tupelo Honey" that outdoes Van Morrison (if that's even possible), to a wonderfully evocative "Hellhound on My Trail", to "You Don't Know What Love Is". to the African-based trio in the middle of the set, it doesn't get much more eclectic than this. Yet, it's all interesting, with always interesting instrumentation. I think Cassandra Wilson falls in the mold of Billie Holiday--one with a relatively limited voice who just brings it all to the table--but with wider diversity. Very highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars A fine song stylist.......2003-10-25

Ms. Wilson has a wonderful voice that reminds me somewhat of that of Cleo Laine. The problem for great voices--now I'm also thinking of Whitney Houston--is that they don't always make great albums.

This one is what I would describe as late night music, the kind of thing that you put on when you have arrived home having drunk rather too much, and want to hear something clear and pure to clear your head.

My favorite track on this is the Robert Johnson number Hellhound On My Trail, which is beautifully done with solo guitar accompaniment. I would like to have heard more of Ms. Wilson in this mode, but this album is a bit of a sampler--eclectic if you like--mixing blues, jazz and country, with violins creeping in every now and again.

Not a bad album at all, but I suspect that Ms. Wilson is capable of an even better one, so I reserve judgement a bit. I also have a feeling, and this is just a hunch, that this album may appeal more to female listeners than to the guys.

My star rating system goes like this:

5 stars--an absolute classic
4 stars--the artist is on top form here, a good buy
3 stars--fans of this artist should enjoy this album
2 stars--some good stuff, but inconsistent
1 star--just not good enough

5 out of 5 stars learn to love it.......2003-03-28

So Cassandra's "New Moon Daughter" is a gem too, but this album is less known and, while it didn't make an immediate impression on me, I now listen to it a lot more. There's basically more variety in song style and arrangement and, if you like Cassandra, then just the sound of her voice is heaven. (If you haven't heard her, her voice is about as distinct as Nina Simone's.) The key point with Cassandra is: nobody sounds like her so if she isn't in your collection then nothing like her is in your collection. Her voice is deep and sultry, her music spacious, unrushed -- there's something distinctly southern about it. She is one of Nora Jones' inspirations, but where Nora's voice is a gentle breeze, Cassandra's is a gathering cloud, and there is no lounge sound to Cassandra's music -- the instruments bleed raw notes.

Her luscious alto has the depth and texture of a great tenor saxophonist, but Cassandra Wilson's defining asset is a postmodern song sense that enables her to surf through Son House, Neil Young, Johnny Mercer, Billie Holiday, and (gasp!) the Monkees in pursuit of strong songs that can provide that instrument with a canvas. Her second Blue Note album extends Wilson's seductive pilgrimage beyond the conventions of jazz repertoire and accompaniment, yet it's her instincts as a jazz singer that inform these brilliant readings. The settings again step away from traditional small group jazz (for starters, there's no piano) to evoke the emotional core of these songs. Anyone who can turn the Monkees' "Last Train to Clarksville" into a slow-burning erotic vignette deserves your attention. --Sam Sutherland

"Love Is Blindness", I love that moody song! I love the lyrics. I love the musicianship. Most of all I love Cassandra's haunting voice. This is my favorite song on "New Moon Daughter".

"Blue Light Til Dawn" is Cassandra's most acclaimed CD but "New Moon Daugher" is equally as good. I love them both dearly but "New Moon Daughter" is still my favorite. The material on this CD is just so damn strong. Plus it's got "Love Is Blindness" on it. Like I said before, I LOVE that song!

5 out of 5 stars Quiet, yet fiery inspiration from one of today's greats.......2004-05-14

This recording would probably be worth it for nothing more than Wilson's reimagining of "Last Train to Clarksville," the 1966 hit written for the Monkees by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. The sassy Monkees version was a huge success, but Wilson, with the help of a superb arrangement and musicians, mines the song's anxiety and doubt in a completely different way, but just as mesmerizing.

Other high points on this enormously well-conceived disc are a gorgeous version of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," a summery, engaging "Skylark" (yes, Hoagy Charmichael) and U2's "Love is Blindness," an aching ballad that Wilson imbues with overwhelming regret. And just the right choice to end is Neil Young's glowing "Harvest Moon," gently fading out in a haze of shimmering guitar work. Wilson's outstanding musicians -- creative, enthusiastic, yet never overpowering -- must share some of the credit for the success here.

If you go for Wilson's ethereal yet husky voice, not to mention her marvelous taste in choosing and reworking material, this recording shows her at her most luminous. Arguably her best to date, and one of the great jazz vocal recordings of the 1990's.

5 out of 5 stars ONE INCREDIBLE JAZZ SINGER.......2003-04-23

Wilson is truly amazing, but not so much for her voice by itself, but the way she transforms non Jazz material no one ever would have dreamed of doing. She doesn't just pull it off. She makes seem as natural as breathing. I can't think of anyone else who could have taken a piece of mid 60's cheese like The Monkees "Last Train To Clarksville" and transform it into a really swinging Jazz number. Her reading of U2's "Love Is Blindness" is beautiful as well as making songs by Hank Williams and Neil Young all her own. There are also a a couple of standard
Jazz numbers here and she's no slouch as a writer. Case in point: "Solomon Sang". There's also her arrrangements which feature a Joni Mithchell style of "Whack Tuning" as it's refered to in the liner notes, as well as some very diverse instrumentation. It might take you a few listens to really get into, but most great music does and this is without a doubt, great!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

As on their previous releases, this much-admired Persian/Indian crossover duo have created a separate yet spacious universe that is tranquility incarnate. The musicans, who have named themselves after an ancient form of romantic poetry, perform on sitar (a multi-stringed Indian plucked instrument with a tall fretboard attached to a resonating gourd) and kamancheh (a sonorous but gutty-sounding spike fiddle) and voice, accompanied by a tabla virtuoso (a tuned skin drum commonly played in India and Pakistan). They wander hither and yon, seemingly traveling between dimensions of time, thought, and feeling. People who find Indian classical music too demanding for a beginner and/or have no idea what Persian music sounds like need have no fear. These three extended pieces, called "Fire," "Dawn," and "Eternity," may be somewhat rarified but they are also utterly accessible. Performing live before a respectfully rapt audience, Ghazal is at once sensuous, austere, fiery, and spiritual. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars A trip from the terrestrial to the celestial........2007-03-24

"Gazal": An Urdu word, to me it means: a delicate poem of love and passion.

Pl let me share a few known things. Ustaad Shujaat is a maestro of Sitar, a seven string Indian music instrument, with a big echo box made from a shell of a gourd. He excels in "Gayaki" style where strings are plucked and intonations made to emulate vocal chords. He hums along and renders the words with Sitar as a fiddle, to follow up. He has a deep commitment to the tradition, at the same time is fearless to experiment and improvise. Please listen to his other CD "Lajo" where pristine folk tunes from Punjab, India have been given a rebirth. Amazing, indeed.

Kayhan Kalhor, for me has been an amazing find and gift to Indians; from Persia With Love. I have no words to write about him, but admire his art, vision, virtuosity.

Together they in this CD will enthrall anybody. If you can follow the words, this is ecstatic. Otherwise it is sublime. Listen and enjoy these to take a flight to another planet.

This is very inspiring music, to go on a trip, from the terrestrial to the celestial.

ENJOY.

During a cab ride I took in New York, the driver played a CD of some Indian music which included a male voice as well as sitar, tabla and tambura. I asked him what it was and he wrote the name "Ghazal" as well as some other words that didn't show up on the Amazon search. The Rain is not the same CD and I'm not sure if it's even the same artist. The cab driver's CD was pure classical Indian and The Rain is a sort of fusion of Indian and Persian. If I made a mistake buying this CD it was a very lucky mistake because the quality of the music is very high. The interaction among the players is of a very high calibre, like that of the very best jazz combos as they take a motif and work it as if it were composed but with such a feel of spontaneity which is so much the excitment of improvisational music. I suppose that many people would like to find a piece of music like this if they only knew where to look. I got lucky with this one and I recommend it highly.

I own so many cd's of virtually every genre you could imagine among my favorites being indian classical, gypsy jazz, fusion, and flamenco. This cd is one of the few that i would rank among my very favorites. Shujaat Khan and Kayhan Kalhor play in complete sympathy with one another and are provided great tabla playing by the up and coming tabla virtuoso, Sandeep Das. The interesting thing about this group is that they combine effortlessly the two traditions of Indian Raga of North India and Persian Dastgah. These traditions are very different but you would never realize by listening to this music. They each uphold their tradition but welcome the other with open arms and mutual understanding. In short, If you should only buy one album this year, I would probably choose this one. All of the songs are great and long. The last track "Eternity" is probably my favorite clocking in at about 20 minutes and taking you to a place you could never imagine. Shujaatji really proves his remarkable since of music and his astonishing control over the sitar on this one. Also to check out would be Ustad Sultan Khan's album with Ustad Zakir Hussain of Raga Bhupali and Ali Akbar Khan's duet with Pandit Nikhil Banerjee on the Signature Series. ESSENTIAL TO ANY HUMAN BEING!

5 out of 5 stars Hindu-Persian Beauty.......2005-12-18

Few CDs from my 4000 collection of CDs get into my car for a long ride as frequently as The Rain. I just cannot have enough of Kalhor's kamancheh sound and the peaceful Hindu-Persian feeling that it evokes. The sound brings back for me the memories of my younger days at my aunt's Safavid era house in the Northern Iran city of Rasht and the peaceful Zoroastrian temples of Iran and India where I spent a lifetime of happy hours. This is a keeper.

My music staples are blues and rock, but I like all kinds. Whether it's blues or classical or Persian/Indian the masters of the genre put me in a zone that makes me forget about the cowboys looting our country. THis cd does that. These guys make great music.

5 out of 5 stars Nice mix of accessible rock and avante garde jazz.......2007-08-02

Just picked this up the other day and I haven't stopped listening to it yet. Just guitar, bass and drums. Jewish/Sephardic melodies played in a rock/avante-garde jazz style. The brief liner notes compare his playing to Hendrix, McLaughlin, Sharrock, and Ulmer. I'd probably say closest to Sharrock, maybe because he's played with Zorn, but also because he may be the least "in the pocket" player and most willing to take chances, but without the trademark "blizzard of notes". Ribot's not a shredder, but he certainly keeps you guessing where the solo's going next, and he embraces dissonance like a certain bucket wearing guitarist Zorn is certainly familiar with. An interesting aspect of his style (on this cd anyway) is he doesn't use much vibrato, especially when holding a long note. Couple this with some of the high keening notes of the middle eastern scale and his slightly acidic tone and it really makes for a unique sound, almost like a reed instrument. The rhythm section is infallible, and keeps everything "real" and listenable through Marc's wanderings down Electric Ladyland. Trevor Dunn's bass work is quite remarkable, occasionally bubbling to the surface, then back down to groove-keeping. The tunes Yezriel, Zakun and Dagiel are my personal favorites. Yezriel in particular has a 60's groove reminscient of Jefferson Airplane's eastern experiments, but Ribot takes it somewhere Jorma never could have imagined (no matter how much acid he consumed). My only complaint is the cd's only 36 minutes long, but it's a thrilling 1/2 hour. Buy it cheap and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Yet another "Book of Angels" gem..........2007-07-07

I've collected volumes 1 through 6 with great enthusiasm and all have brought equal reward. John Zorn continues to amaze me with his prolific output, and overabundant talent and love for all things audible. With Book 7, Marc Ribot shines on all tracks, showing why he is the guitarist of choice for Mr. Zorn. Trevor Dunn also provides very solid basswork, and his interaction with Ribot is very tight, most likely coming from their past work in Electric Masada together. I am new to G. Calvin Weston's work, but from this effort alone, I will definitely be looking out for more. Tracks #2 and 4 are instant favorites, but none of the tracks are any less than stellar. Anyone obsessed with the involved parties probably have already picked this up, but anyone looking for a solid guitar/bass/drum trio effort, here it is.

Cassandra Wilson's tribute to Miles Davis, Traveling Miles, is nothing if not ambitious--easily on par with the other slew of Davis tribs. Covering the great trumpeter's long career is alone quite a challenge, but Wilson sets her goals even higher by writing new lyrics and arrangements that make these tunes her own. The result is a pleasure that ends up capturing Wilson's spirit as well as Davis's. Never one to hew to traditional jazz's formats, Wilson adds acoustic and slide guitars, percussion, harmonica, and other instruments that give the album an enormously varied feel. "Right Here, Right Now," with its strummed and slide guitars, wouldn't sound out of place on a Joni Mitchell album, and her intriguing cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" (covered by Davis in 1985 on You're Under Arrest), is delicately mournful. Not that Wilson has left jazz behind: the swinging version of "Seven Steps to Heaven," with guest solos by violinist Regina Carter and vibraphonist Stefon Harris, whose 1998 debut was one of the year's promising releases, is a highlight. And Wilson's version of the Davis classic "Blue in Green" (here titled "Sky and Sea"), is just plainly beautiful. Her deep and soulful voice remains as compelling as ever through the many moods and colors, deepening the uniqueness of her take on the Miles songbook. Exactly the way Miles would have wanted it. --Ezra Gale

4 out of 5 stars Different & nothing like Miles.......2007-04-23

I love Miles Davis and have barely listened to Cassandra Wilson so this was a risky venture; in the end it was worthwhile. I was curious what an artist could do by changing the original Miles songs into something new, replacing his horn with a voice, adding lyrics and creating a differnt song essentially. Beginning with Miles's excellent "Run The VooDoo Down" I was drawn in with a positive attitude. The following track, a Cassandra Wilson composition entitled "Travelling Miles" was very tasty with nice runs on sax by Steve Wilson and echoing Wilson's vocals as a chorus. It is a moody piece, part blues, part jazz, all good. From this point on the disc suddenly tries to capture the many colors of the musical world by adding a slew of instruments that seem to not fit together. Marimbas with slide guitar on one track, on others harmonicas, mandolins, vibraphone, violin and even classical guitar(more on that later). I wish she would have incorporated a trumpet since that was Miles's instrument. Does this musical stew work? Surprisingly, yes, for the most part. The mixture is tasteful and done in such a manner that it is suttle and never overpowering. She lets her voice and the power of Miles songs take control. Outstanding tracks are the aforementioned, "Run The VooDoo Down" from Miles's "Bitches Brew," as well as the "VooDoo Reprise," the eloquent phrasing on Cyndi Lauper's" Time After Time," the undertoned stylings and jazzy vocals on "Someday My Prince Will Come" complete with mandolin and violin interludes and " Sky and Sea" that features Pat Metheny on a classical guitar solo and Cassandra's smoky vocals. The disc overall is pretty good , it is a slow and bluesy musical tribute fit for a rainy day or late night reflexions. Recommended for jazz aficionados or some one that wants to hear what has been done with the music of Miles Davis.

4 out of 5 stars Nice tribute.......2006-10-14

Smooth and silky voice of Cassandra Wilson is not a bad instrument for various sorts of jazz and similar moods, although one might wonder whether a bit more sense of swing could help me enjoy it even more...
She is a great singer, just not such a great jazz singer. For those not familiar with Miles Davis' work (although he is a cross-over artist himself) this album could serve as an inspiration.
Miles is a far greater artist (and jazz perfomer) but this is still a nice tribute...

5 out of 5 stars A fine recording.......2006-10-01

"Right Here, Right Now" is my favorite cut on this record, but there really isn't anything here that I didn't enjoy. Cassandra Wilson's best effort so far, this is a complex and interesting tribute to the music of Miles Davis.

1 out of 5 stars DVD-Audio buyers beware!.......2006-04-19

If you are looking to get the DVD-Audio version of Traveling Miles (there are a lot of copies listed where I am posting this note) you should know that the DVD Audio tracks were screwed up in the disc mastering and/or manufacturing. Cassandra's vocals come out of the right surround (or rear) channel, and there is no sound at all in the left surround or center channels. You can switch to play it in DTS which has a very nice and full mix, but you lose the higher resolution, of course. Consquently, I am indicating one star for this problem in this version.

5 out of 5 stars Wilson meets Davis.......2006-01-02

It is a particularly difficult thing to do, recreating the spirit of a musician with such a enormous persolity as Miles through a tribute album, without falling in mannerism or without simply copying the original. Cassandra didin't go wrong here, proving to be a true artist (like John McLaughlin in his tribute to Bill Evans). She tributed Miles here recreating his blackness, his sophisticated use of space and his sense of harmony but without coping him. The music here is both Davis and Wilson. It's not atribute in a sense, it is Miss Wilson who meets Miles Davis. I really feel Miles's spirit in these voodo, black arrangements when you have slide or acoustic guitars and percussions for example, and I feel his presence too in the way Cassandra use wide spaces in tunes such as Tutu or Blue in green. The totally absence of virtuosisms, the will to tell a story and to give each note weight .. this is truly what Miles was about essentially and you can find him here in these tunes. The ones I love the most are the opener, Someday my prince will come, Tutu and Blue in green. They are original versions of these songs, absolutly not common or already heard versions. I think that you have to be really courageous to realize an album such as this one, tributing Miles but injecting in this music your own vision. You have to be a true artist, such as Cassandra. My plause! Morevoer I think this album could be enjoyed by the jazz novices too because it is not a difficult album, it maintains a sense of natural easyness.. and it has a very contemporary, interesting atmosphere with nice sounds. Very good. I'd give four stars and a half it it was an option. I choose five against four because it's very rare to find an artist with enough personality to do things like this.

Album Description

Elbow returns with their 3rd release. Delivering another stunning album of gorgeously epic songs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, multi-layered, epic work........2006-04-02

Elbow manages to create music that is at once troubling, atmospheric and transcendently beautiful. The songs on this album are rooted in the quite ordinary experiences of their lives and loves. In this band's hands, though, they seem to shimmer and glow like few albums you'll ever hear. The production is lavish and georgeous, the musicianship is fine and the Guy Garvey's lyrics manage to express a crushing sense of longing (My Very Best), a deep despair (Station Approach, Leaders of the Free World), and an extraordinary range of other emotions while rarely rising above a whisper.

While they have been compared with ColdPlay (lyrics, lavish musical climaxes) and Doves (lush and spacey productions) they are really a force to be reckoned with all on their own. I listen to almost everything on Rhapsody these days and buy few albums but this is one I had to have for "the archives."

Highly recommended.

Already one of the most appealing talents among contemporary flamenco guitarists, Jesse Cook skillfully expands his discography with a spirited, satisfying recording (his fourth) that reconfirms his position as one of the elite composer/performers in the genre. Specializing in "rumba flamenco," Cook (born in Paris to Canadian parents) here embellishes his vibrant playing with well-crafted arrangements and imaginative instrumental colors, from the gypsy violin of the title track to the involving Middle Eastern mystery of "Incantation" to the fascinating mix of Arabic strings and subtle hip-hop rhythms on the disc's most distinctive piece, "On Walks the Night." Cook's playing is intricate, challenging, and rewarding, bringing expressive flair even to his subdued ballads ("Virtue," "All That Remains"). He tacks on a vocal selection near the disc's conclusion, a modest reworking of Neil Finn's "Fall at Your Feet" (Danny Wilde of the Rembrandts, close to a Finn clone, is the singer), then closes the disc with an uncredited live track, the percussion-heavy "Mario Takes a Walk." That piece, along with "Rattle and Burn," is also presented in video form as part of an enhanced-CD package. Good listening. --Terry Wood

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Purely Stunning!.......2005-11-01

What Jesse is able to accomplish is jaw droppingly inhuman. His command of the fretboard surpasses maniacal practice and trancends into something only the gifted are capable of, and which leaves the rest of us scorned and ready to burn our instruments. And again he demonstrates nonchalently that Flamenco has so many ancestors that's it's perfectly fluent in virtually any style. Years from now when historians and educators look back on the procession of Flamenco scions and I think this generation will be his.

5 out of 5 stars great cd!.......2005-09-09

I'm enjoying this cd and will probably order another one of Jesse Cook's cds soon.

4 out of 5 stars A hybrid built on a hybrid.......2005-06-04

I had to chuckle at the irony of reviewers who criticized this recording for not being flamenco-ish enough. Flamenco itself is a fusion of Spanish, Gypsy, Moorish, and Jewish musical influences, not a pure-bred style. In addition, Cook is not from the old school of Sabicas, Serrano, or Heredia. Cook plays nouveau flamenco, which is itself an update of the traditional style and instrumentation. So, why is an futher experimentation by a modernizer of a hybrid music an artistic faux pas?

I love the stylistic explorations and fusions on this CD, just as I do on Ottmar Liebert's "Solo Para Ti." I like this recording better than Gravity, which had too much flashy technique masking the passion of flamenco for my taste. Here, Cook's technical skills are evident, but so is the soul of the music. The silences in the slow pieces frame emotional music. The slow, spare beginning of "Free Fall," for example, evokes the cool pre-dawn of the Arabian desert, while the busier passages reminded me of belly dances, with coins clinking against against each other on the dancers' costumes. By the middle of the piece, I was swaying, my energy rising and falling in sync with the progression of the song. "Incantation" is exactly that, a pensive, meditative mood-setter. The melancholy in "All That Remains" is palpable, and I wondered whether Cook was mourning a lost love or a grand city reduced to rubble. And I enjoyed "At Your Feet" for what it is: a fine, latin-tinged pop song.

I can understand that some reviewers don't like the middle-eastern flavors in some of the songs. Perhaps Cook's composition and playing is too derivative for the most discerning of listeners. But to criticize the artist for going beyond his stylistic roots is just plain close-minded. Not only has this CD passed the "one-week" test, it will get regular play in my stereo, computer, and car.

5 out of 5 stars Best Jesse Album.......2003-12-28

In two words: truly awsome.

I have all of Jesse's albums, and this one has by far the highest quality of musical essence. I've read a number of negative reviews for this album, and that urged me to give my 2c's, as I felt they were grossly unfair to this genius piece of art. I've enjoyed this album for almost 2 years already, and it is still the one I listen to the most and cannot get tired of repeated listening.

Not flamenco, some say. Well, they apparently have not listened to the CD even though they say they have, because that claim is a gross exagaration. It is true that there are a couple of (5 to be exact) songs that stray from the well-established genre, but I commend Jesse for his brave exploration of unfamiliar territory. The non-flamenco tracks are great for certain mood-setting occasions and are still carry JC's signiture guitar virtuoso. These tracks are Free Fall, Incantation, All That Remains and On Walks The Night and the vocals song, Fall at your Feet.

But, before bashing this CD, think of its gems, the truly unique and best songs I have ever listened to: Air, Virtue, Paloma, Viva. Just these 4 songs alone justify paying 3x the price of the CD.

2 out of 5 stars A departure for Jesse Cook, but not a good one........2003-11-11

I am a Jesse Cook fan - or at least I am a fan of his earlier work. I was quite excited to receive his Free Fall CD, but it is a big disappointment. Although he appears to be attempting to expand his sound and appeal, the departure from his guitar/flamenco base with the addittion of a taste of India, just doesn't work. Gone is the demonstration of his true guitar talents and of a sound that lifted and motivated.
