It's appropriate that Destination Anywhere is an album by Bon Jovi the solo artist as opposed to Bon Jovi the band. For while it contains the requisite number of catchy tunes and the right amount of romantic drama, it varies from the band's output in two important ways. First, much of the material on Destination Anywhere is more low-key than the band's high-octane anthems, offering intimacy, if not exactly introspection, from Jon Bon Jovi himself. Too, there's an experimental edge to the music, with sound samples, programmed drums, and keyboard washes that are as distant from the group's albums as California is from New Jersey. Eurythmic Dave Stewart, ex-Hooters Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian, and perennial hit maker Desmond Child kick in some help on "Queen of New Orleans," "Midnight in Chelsea," and "Ugly." The album-closing "August 7, 4:15," meanwhile, is a dramatic rocker about the murder of Bon Jovi's manager's child. Overall, Destination Anywhere is a solid effort, with Bon Jovi flexing some of the same muscles he's building with his budding acting career. --Daniel Durchholz

2 stars would probably be more accurate. But since a mediocre Bon Jovi record is better than none at all, I'll be generous. Like "Blaze of Glory," "Destination Anywhere" was made without his band. However, while "Blaze of Glory" would make it seem that Bon Jovi could hold his own and that the return of his group was optional, this solo record "Destination Anywhere" would make it appear that the reunion of his band was essential to his survival. Most of you know they did regroup afterwards to make "Crush." Well, onto the subject at hand. The first thing you will notice is that Bon Jovi does NOT really sound like himself on this record for the most part. Sadly, the change does not seem for the better as Bon Jovi slips into a grunge type tone. If you like old school Bon Jovi, chances are you will not like the first several songs on this record. In addition, Bon Jovi always seemed to be able to prevent his clicheish songs from sounding so. But that does not seem to be the case on this record. But even this mediocre Bon Jovi record does have a few moments. The record gets 1 star for the title track: "Destination Anywhere." On this track Bon Jovi starts to sound like his old self again, and rather than just sounding like a radio tune, this song does reflect effort. It sounds like a track that would have been on "Keep the Faith" or "These Days." This record gets a 2nd star for 'Little City.' While this song is different from anything Bon Jovi has done, this is a case where different seems to work. It's a low key song, but a good one. Finally, like on his "Crush," Bon Jovi saves the best for last. The 3rd star is for 'August 7, 4:15.' This track really saves the record. This song reflects the tragic death of the daughter of Bon Jovi's manager. This song is done tastefully and with dignity. In addition, on this track Bon Jovi really does sound like his old self again. The power of this track falls somewhere between that of "New Jersey" and "Slippery When Wet." To Bon Jovi's virtue, he does two good things with this song. (1) He gives his old school 80s fans one song. (2) While this song does have a tragic story behind it, we really do get the impression that Bon Jovi honestly feels for this girl and that he is NOT trying to just make another song. Being perfectly honest, this is quite arguably Bon Jovi's weakest record. But do be warned. If you skip it, you will miss out on one good song, one great song, and one phenomenal song.

This is a masterpiece! It has left me gobsmacked a lot of times. I received this CD in 1997 from a friend and I just hated this CD! I thought this was, well...darn awful of Bon Jovi to come up with wussy songs like these...So, I had put this album away until a few months later, out of sheer boredom, I played it again...This time, I kept reading the lyrics as the song was played out. I have never stopped listening to the songs since. I think it has something to do with the lucid and easy-to-remember lyrics, and ofcourse, you give Jon Bon Jovi a nursery rhyme and he will make a song out of it.
Its 2006, and I just bought my second copy. I had lost my earlier copy in 1999.
That has to say a lot for the genius that this guy is...

I just got this CD and it put me to sleep. It should be called Destination down the tube.I'm a diehard Bon Jovi fan from New Jersey and I cannot believe he released this tragedy.I love all the CD's from Bon Jovi but this solo by Jon sounds like elevator or nursing home music.And for Richie,Bryan and Tico, please don't let Jon out of your sight again.

I bought this cd when it came out, and loved it right away. I still listen to it regularly, and continue to be amazed that none of the tracks were ever released as singles. "Midnight in Chelsea" and "Queen of New Orleans" are just two of the many great songs that are better than a lot of the junk that makes it onto the airwaves, so the lack of attention to the only solo release from such a major talent is inexplicable.
Plagiarizing the Foo Fighters..........2005-12-17
"Queen Of New Orleans" = "Hey, Johnny Park!"...listen to both songs (the latter one being from the Foo Fighters) and it's EXACTLY the same guitar riff...Bon Jovi released his album a month later than the Foos..."Midnight In Chelsea" is good though

Poor Brenda Kahn. Her first two albums predated Liz Phair and Lisa Loeb, but it's hard to listen to Kahn's third set, Destination Anywhere, and not hear a combination of those artists' worst tendencies, plus an added dose of pretension. Like her insufferable pal, Jeff Buckley, Kahn thinks she's a serious poet, but she's gotta do better than images of "schoolyard shamen" and descriptions like "pretty as a Harlem whorehouse." Musically, her flat, monotone vocals wear thin even quicker than Phair's, and if there was a hook in any of these 11 tunes, I didn't hear it. --Jim DeRogatis

Y'see, Brenda had been going for the longest time with antifolk fixture Roger Manning. It's him she's singing about when she says "you'd rather hang with the drunks on Avenue B than spend a shred of your miserable life with me". It's the potency of that time in her life that fueled "Epiphany In Brooklyn". Reasoning musically, I'd place "Destination Anywhere" at at the time of their breakup.
It would be hard to place her in a category - she is kind of a mix of folk/punk/poetry/rock/pop, .......2005-10-31
I had the opportunity to talk to Brenda on the phone just before this one came out. Of course I didn't know it was her until I had already gushed about how I loved her music. She was very cool and said she had planned to put this one out sooner, but was going through red tape with Sony (shame shame)
This album is a good one - doesn't disappoint with her lyrics at all. This one is also a little harder than Goldfish Don't Talk Back and Epiphany in Brooklyn.
oh no.......2005-10-26
i loved Brenda Kahn's first record with it's spikey sarcastic approach to urban folk rock...but somewhere along the way, she got a bit too pretentious for my tastes. Destination Anywhere is aimless and pointless and just sounds as lost and hopeless as the title implies. it's a shame because she showed so much talent on the Epiphany In Brooklyn album. but sadly, not much here to praise.
Scraping Out The Damage... With Love........2005-03-04
The truth is... (hey, lean in and I'll whisper this little secret, but you must promise not to spread it like a dirty little joke) The truth is that sometimes the most deserving lose. Brenda Kahn lost. A talent like hers should not be confined to a few Ebay listings and netorder used CD shops. But its no matter. Not for us. Because, here's the thing, we can still enjoy this absolute classic album, knowing we're getting something that the majority of music fans will miss out on. And its a hell of a thing to miss, too. This lost record is better than almost everything else produced in the '90s. So buy it. Love it. You'll be better off,
Incredible Dark Rock Album.......2003-02-09
The great "lost" Brenda Kahn album. Bandied about because of contact scuffles with her record company, this album pretty much got lost in the shuffle - even though it is easily one of the best works of the nineties. If Atlantic had the smarts to release this one, it could have soared - Brenda is at her hard-rocking best here, delivering her clever, intense, and moving lyrics alongside a scorching rock soundscape. This is full of choice cuts, but don't miss the poetic rocker "Night", the Jeff Buckley duet "Faith Salons", the pop-punky "Spoon", and the could-have-been-a-huge-hit-single "Yellow Sun". This is a great album - one to grab if you can get your hands on it. (Interesting fact: Bob Dylan's favorite Brenda Kahn song, "Too Far Gone", appears on this album.)

This 2005 Japanese Reissue of jon's solo album of 1997, have a bonus track "I Talk To Jesus", and both japanese & english lyrics, this already a sold out album, but still have a japanese version of Destination Anywhere with the Bonus track "I talk To Jesus".
Note: The 2005 Reissue Includes: Richie Sambora - Stranger in this Town (1991), Undiscovered Soul (1998), Jon Bon Jovi - Blaze of Glory, and NEW JERSEY (1998), all cd's with booklet with Japanese and english Lyrics. Recomended!

It sounds like a track that would have been on "Keep the Faith" or "These Days." This record gets a 2nd star for 'Little City.' While this song is different from anything Bon Jovi has done, this is a case where different seems to work. It's a low key song, but a good one. Finally, like on his "Crush," Bon Jovi saves the best for last. The 3rd star is for 'August 7, 4:15.' This track really saves the record. This song reflects the tragic death of the daughter of Bon Jovi's manager. This song is done tastefully and with dignity. In addition, on this track Bon Jovi really does sound like his old self again. The power of this track falls somewhere between that of "New Jersey" and "Slippery When Wet." To Bon Jovi's virtue, he does two good things with this song. (1) He gives his old school 80s fans one song. (2) While this song does have a tragic story behind it, we really do get the impression that Bon Jovi honestly feels for this girl and that he is NOT trying to just make another song. Being perfectly honest, this is quite arguably Bon Jovi's weakest record. But do be warned. If you skip it, you will miss out on one good song, one great song, and one phenomenal song.

This is a masterpiece! It has left me gobsmacked a lot of times. I received this CD in 1997 from a friend and I just hated this CD! I thought this was, well...darn awful of Bon Jovi to come up with wussy songs like these...So, I had put this album away until a few months later, out of sheer boredom, I played it again...This time, I kept reading the lyrics as the song was played out. I have never stopped listening to the songs since. I think it has something to do with the lucid and easy-to-remember lyrics, and ofcourse, you give Jon Bon Jovi a nursery rhyme and he will make a song out of it.
Its 2006, and I just bought my second copy. I had lost my earlier copy in 1999.
That has to say a lot for the genius that this guy is...

I just got this CD and it put me to sleep. It should be called Destination down the tube.I'm a diehard Bon Jovi fan from New Jersey and I cannot believe he released this tragedy.I love all the CD's from Bon Jovi but this solo by Jon sounds like elevator or nursing home music.And for Richie,Bryan and Tico, please don't let Jon out of your sight again.
A Neglected Gem.......2006-01-18
I bought this cd when it came out, and loved it right away. I still listen to it regularly, and continue to be amazed that none of the tracks were ever released as singles. "Midnight in Chelsea" and "Queen of New Orleans" are just two of the many great songs that are better than a lot of the junk that makes it onto the airwaves, so the lack of attention to the only solo release from such a major talent is inexplicable.
Plagiarizing the Foo Fighters..........2005-12-17
"Queen Of New Orleans" = "Hey, Johnny Park!"...listen to both songs (the latter one being from the Foo Fighters) and it's EXACTLY the same guitar riff...Bon Jovi released his album a month later than the Foos..."Midnight In Chelsea" is good though
