One Wild Night? Well, that's not strictly true, as this live album was recorded at Bon Jovi concerts spanning three decades. But why be pedantic when the result is a live album that effectively doubles as a greatest-hits collection? Bon Jovi's songs are tailor-made for stadiums and arenas, and, from classic fist-in-the-air rockers ("Livin' on a Prayer," "Bad Medicine," "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Runaway") to lighters-in-the-air numbers ("Keep the Faith," "Wanted Dead or Alive," "Something to Believe In"), the choices are suitably larger than life. The career-reviving single "It's My Life" sounds right at home, as do great covers of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" (recorded, appropriately enough, in Johannesburg in 1995) and the Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays" (performed with Sir Bob Geldof). --Robert Burrow

5 out of 5 stars Live Concert Versions of Bon Jovi's Greatest Hits.......2007-01-19

"One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001" by Bon Jovi, Is a compilation of Bon Jovi's best songs, performed at various concert events from 1985 to 2001. For Bon Jovi fans, it's classic Bob Jovi and a Must Have! If you like music recorded from "Live" performances, You will love this album! If you prefer "Studio-Cut" versions, you may not like this album because it has the sound and feel of a live concert.

1 out of 5 stars zero stars.......2005-11-13

One WEAK night!...zero stars if that was available. I never realized Bon Jovi was this bad a live band. They obviously get a LOT of production help in the studio because this album (several different concerts in several different venues) is ALL bad. Sorry for them and sorry for me for buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Bon Jovi rocks.......2005-08-09

I found this CD to be extemely uplifting, great music to listen to while driving.

5 out of 5 stars not a greatest hits album.......2005-05-14

This is not Bon Jovi's greatest hits, and that's the only bad thing that anyone who likes Bon Jovi can say about this. It's a fun collection of some live great live performances. Bon Jovi is great in concert, interacting with the crowd, and building up the energy and fun. You can hear that the audience and performers had a great time. If you like Bon Jovi, then this is certainly worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars Karate Kid Lives On.......2007-07-18

As a fan of 80's movies such as the Karate Kid series, it's fun to revist the nostalgia of the film in the music. Being able to play the music while traveling or even while at home relaxing, creates the mood and the enjoyment of the exciting story. You have to enjoy singing along with "You're the Best Around". But there is a better collection of Karate Kid Music now. There is a collection of the Scores of all four movies. For the die hard fan of the Karate Kid oriental music, the Score collection (though expensive) is the best to have, however, having both is the full experience since the score doesn't include the popular music.

4 out of 5 stars Bill Conti Karate Kid collection released.......2007-03-31

I'm such a fan of the Karate Kid films -- at least the first two -- that I'll take anything I can get. This is a great set that reminds me of the film, but it's missing Bill Conti's music. However, Varese Sarabande has just released (March '07) a 4-CD set containing Bill Conti's score to ALL FOUR Karate Kid movies. It's a limited press run of 2000 copies, available only on their website. It's fantastic. Now all I want is a CD of the Karate Kid Part II soundtrack that I had on cassette, containing Dennis DeYoung, New Edition, Carly Simon, et al. -- that would make me deleriously happy.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it........2007-02-13

The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars instead of 1 is "Moment of Truth" by Survivor. It's a song that bears repeated listening, unlike the others, which are throwaways. You can download "Moment of Truth" on iTunes or just about any music download site, so I wouldn't even bother getting this.

It's a shame that Bill Conti wouldn't release his orchestral music, with the Pan Flute and string-sounding instruments, in a wide release. That's the heart and soul of the film, in my opinion. I checked on the Varese Sarabande website, and a limited edition of the Bill Conti score for all 4 movies in one 4-disc set is indeed available; exclusively through them, of course. There's a limited supply, and the sets are about $45 each. I don't know why they couldn't have the soundtrack for each movie available separately, and why they had to make it a limited supply. Anyway, if you want the scores for just the first 2 movies (minus a couple of the tracks on the "official" releases), for much cheaper, just copy and past the following into Google; you'll come across some sites that have it, (legally as far as I know): Karate Kid Score "Bill Conti" MP3. I unfortunately can't post the URL per the Amazon review guidelines.

2 out of 5 stars Missing Zamfir Music.......2006-06-15

This would have been the only reason I would have bought it, but it's missing from the soundtrack. Luckily I found this track on the Kill Bill Vol 1 album.

The songs on this are okay. It was really fun to hear the music from an awesome 80's movie!

The 1980s were about excess and Heart, with those sweeping chords and soaring vocals, were as representative of the decade's musical immoderation as anyone. True, this collection of Heart stretches up to the mid-'90s, but Heart's sensibilities were thoroughly entwined with '80s guitar rock. This collection reaches only back to 1985, so it lacks such early hits as "Barracuda" and "Magic Man." It's also marred by filler, such as Ann Wilson's lugubrious duet with Cheap Trick's Robin Zander on "Surrender to Me," which originally appeared on the soundtrack to Tequila Sunrise. Still, since much of Heart's late-'80s and early-'90s output is no longer in print, this collection is your best opportunity to get some of their more recent rockers and power ballads on CD. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars All of Heart's Pop/Rock Incarnation Hits.......2006-02-20

The mid 80's to early 90's was Heart's commercial peak. These are not their best songs, but they are the ones that were big hit singles. Very well crafted and expertly executed, these songs dominated pop radio at the time. Ann Wilson is the best female rock singer ever and she is in top form, as always.

5 out of 5 stars A go-to-favorite..........2007-07-14

I admit I purchased this package of work when it went on sale due to the value but it surprized me with its unique collection of warmth and song selection. There's a great deal of surprise and comfort in the retrospective that makes this one of my most played selections. Mr. Hornsby's talent and honesty comes through in a superior collection. The artist that he plays with are top notch, and the quality of the recordings are first rate. You can't niss with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars So you're thinking..."But I already have all the albums..........2007-07-01

...so do I really need to buy the box set?"

Let's assume you're like me: you own all the Bruce Hornsby albums (except Greatest Radio Hits), but

(a) you haven't obsessively bought every album of any artist where he's played in at least one track (you didn't buy Two Rooms, for instance, just to hear Hornsby play "Madman on the Water");
(b) you don't own any singles;
(c) you're not the concert-trading type.

Eliminating album versions of songs from this 53-track (not counting DVD) collection, I found 38 tracks had music I didn't yet own. 71% new!

What's in those 38 tracks?

* The various instrumental lettered songs, from Song A through Song H.
* Great versions of non-Hornsby-authored songs like "Darlin' Cory", "Jack Straw", and "Madman Across the Water."
* A good number of unique new live versions of older songs, such as a haunting version of "A Night on the Town" and a great piano-only rendition of "Sticks and Stones"--as well as the traditional "The Way It Is", "Mandolin Rain", and the rest.

Like another reviewer, I've found Disc 2 my favorite; it contains a number of instrumental pieces and collaborations on songs by other musicians. Of the four CDs, it contains the largest amount of material I didn't own or hadn't heard before.

But don't discount the other CDs. There are some great live versions on each. To get the best listening experience, if you already own all the studio albums, you may want to burn your own custom CDs from this set to pare this down to three CDs or so.

So for the price of about two CDs, you're getting three new CDs' worth of material, plus a DVD that contains music videos and concert footage, including a couple of songs, like "Go Back to Your Woods", that aren't on the CDs.

I'd call that a good deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2007-05-12

Great collection for those who don't get to see Bruce very often. Disc 2 is my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing.......2007-04-07

This boxed set of Bruce Hornsby's music is simply astonishing.

For a few years, in the late-1980s, Bruce was hot commercially, producing a string of hits. (Re-visiting his music by listening to this boxed set, it's surprising how many hits he had!) Then the public's musical taste moved on. For a while, that bothered him, because he wasn't selling as many records as he had. But, he told me a few years ago, he finally stopped worrying about trying to please a fickle record-buying public. Instead, he decided to simply work on his craft.

That's why the music on Intersections is astonishing. Many of the 53 songs in the set are live. (For those who want to hear the hits exactly as they sounded, there's a DVD included of the 1980s videos made of those hits.) But his playing from more recent years shows that his musicianship is far better now than it was when the public was in love with him! And, since he's not worried about selling records, his music has become beyond classification. He was a classically-trained piano perfomance major in college. Some of the selections on Intersections are classical -- almost. His various arrangements turn many of his hits into jazz -- almost.

Maybe I can describe it in this way: Bruce plays rock and roll from the foundation of classical training, and, in the performance, the songs stretch out with jazz-like improvising. His band is full of incredibly accomplished musicians who are able to play off each other like members of a jazz group do. But there are also many solo pieces in the set. And there are songs Bruce plays with the Grateful Dead, with the Nitty Gritty Dirt band and Ricky Skaggs (bluegrass), with Branford Marsalis (one of the best working saxophonists today); there's even one track of Bruce playing free jazz with the legendary Ornette Coleman!

It is comon in jazz for musicians to play "the standards." Each time, the song is recognizable, but the arrangements and interpretations are so varied that it is as if listening to a new song. The same thing impresses me about the music in this boxed set. Consider each Bruce Hornsby song to be a "standard." The presentations are so diverse in this set that, each time, it is as if listening to a new song.

Intersections is a collection of tracks from a unique, highly accomplished and simply astonishing musician.

5 out of 5 stars A new direction for Bruce Hornsby.......2007-02-09

Having only heard a couple of songs of Hornsby's from the 80s eg The Way it is etc, i saw this box set and thought it would be like so many other collections. the classic collections are all of the songs of the times with unrecorded versions and with a few live versions as well.

i was surprised by the fact that this was not what i expected and there are not many of the original recordings and many of them have been totally reworked and taken in a new direction which has been sensational. I actually prefer a lot of the rearrangements to the original recordings.

For those who like to hear a song as it was originally recorded track down the original albums and relisten to them. That is one of the benefits of having recordings of the songs, in that you can listen to them when you want.

There is a dvd of many of his clips which gives some of the original recordings for those who do want them.

If you like the concept of a musical journey with the composer then get your hands on this set as you get a better idea of how music is so important to him. It goes beyond any expectations i had and it is much better than i could have hoped for.

This is essential buying for any person who loves piano based music.

This unjustly forgotten masterpiece was in many ways the last great creative gasp for the late, great country songwriter-singer Roger Miller, who died in 1992. After he wrote countless country gems like "Invitation to the Blues," "King of the Road," and "Dang Me" during the 1950s and '60s, Miller's creative muse ran dry in the early 1970s. The drought continued until he made a remarkable comeback by penning the 20-song score and contributing vocals to the soundtrack of this 1985 Broadway adaptation of Mark Twain's literary classic. Big River still stands as a dazzling, heartwarming slice of musical Americana and the final crowning achievement in one of country music's most celebrated careers. --Bob Allen

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-03-24

This is a very cute musical. Do not be fooled this is a mark twain book, not your Dr.Suess. So use caution and don't buy this unless you can listen to the quality of music and not nessicarily the lyrics. But I love the story and it is a great buy. But seeing it live is really good. I enjoyed it. The best song is the Royal Nonesuch.

5 out of 5 stars AMERICAN GOLD.......2007-03-06

Many people probably only know Roger Miller from the somewhat goofy songs that he wrote, but he was truly a genius who wrote and performed a variety of songs. There is such a variety of songs here written in several different styles. Some of the serious songs are fully as good as the lighthearted songs. This truly does show what an amazing person Roger Miller was and his mastery of many different types and styles of music. After listening to the music, I would love to see a stage production of this, as I never have. There aren't many show albums that sound interesting enough to make you want to go see the play, but this one sure does. I guess the only disappointment is that Roger Miller doesn't perform any of the songs himself. Most of the songs are quite short (averaging probably around two minutes each), but much of Miller's output consisted of short songs. Perhaps it is because he could say more in two minutes that many song writer's could in four (or more). It's a shame that this hasn't become more well known and performed more often. Cats (for example) had a very long run and some people think it was awful.

4 out of 5 stars Best Musical - 1985.......2006-12-29

Winner of the 1985 Tony for Best Musical, Roger Miller, best known for his sixties classic "King Of The Road", provides a fine score for this adaptation of Twain's "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". The cast, led by Daniel Jenkins, Ron Richardson, John Goodman, Rene Auberjonois & Patti Cohenour, are terrific & have great voices to match.

While the score is not without its flaws, there are several excellent songs:

Waitin' For The Light To Shine
Guv'ment
Muddy Water
River In The Rain (my personal favorite)
Worlds Apart
You Oughta Be Here With Me
Leavin's Not The Only Way To Go

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greats.......2006-12-24

This is simply one of the greatest musicals of our time by one of the best song writers,"The King of the Road," Roger Miller. So many wonderful songs will just leave you with a goofy smile on your face. ENJOY IT!!!

Known for a terrifying rendition of Otis Redding's hit "(Sittin' On The) Dock of the Bay" (among others), Michael Bolton tears up every classic soul tune he can get his hands on. Ray Charles' "Georgia on My Mind" and Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" take on completely new meanings in the hands of this former hard rock singer. This 2 CD, 17-cut retrospective includes all the songs that catapulted him to mega-stardom and plenty of others that show him as just another sincere fool for love ("I Promise You" and "I Found Someone"). Just as Meatloaf turned up the juice on the histrionics of Bruce Springsteen, Bolton takes the soul singer out of the smoky nightclub and into the hockey arena for the whole world to hear. --Rob O'Connor

3 out of 5 stars My Mistake.......2007-07-06

I never really heard Michael Bolton before and though I give it a chance.
Sorry, but none of the songs are original and he adds nothing to the old mix or creating trying a new one.

3 out of 5 stars Good Cd.......2007-01-30

I bought this cd for my dad. From what I heard, it's pretty ok...

5 out of 5 stars My favorite CD.......2006-10-08

I have a gazillion CD's but this one is my absolute favorite. I hate loud music but when I put this on I crank it up, can't get enough of it. No one can come close to the power and soul in Michael's voice. I am a professional singer myself and am a pretty good judge of vocal ability. I strongly recommend this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Puttin' the GREATEST back in Greatest Hits.......2006-09-29

This album is a must-have for any Michael Bolton fan. The essence of his amazing abilities are captured in this compilation. Although I find it strange that the album is called "Greatest Hits 1985-1995," yet there aren't any songs from 1985. Hmmmm....

Simply an awesome album. Thank you, Michael Bolton.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars is not enough for Michael Bolton.......2006-05-17

Please tell the Amazon.com review writers that five star is excellent and a single star is terribly poor performance. So that when they write glowing reviews they will use the right stars to represent what they have to say. They gave the man an overall score of less than five stars for goodness sake. However, when you read what they have to say, they are swooning and drooling like lovesick puppy dogs over the man's songs. Although I do understand the swooning and drooling - Michael Bolton does that to you. So do the review right or do not write at all.
In regard to Bolton and this CD "I GIVE HIM FIVE STARS".

5 out of 5 stars YOU MUST GET.......2007-01-12

This collection is terrific. During the 85-89 era, I was a teenager, and this brings back all the great memories.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe This Will Help?.......2004-08-29

First off, I won't argue what's here because these songs are good enough to be in this collection. Now that I got that out of the way, here is the real problem: licencing. Madonna and company are not here for that reason alone. However, by looking at the song list, you may buy the songs you want but don't have. You can also buy each CD separately. There are other options then this to summerize.

3 out of 5 stars Billboard top hits 1985-1989 box set.......2004-06-19

I was just going to buy this music box set when I suddenly remembered two great songs of 1985, which are: Born in the USA and Careless Whisper. Am I wrong? or weren't they hits? Where are they? I think they could have left out two other songs and included the ones I mentioned, because they were #1 hits. It just got me thinking that this box set is really not so great.

4 out of 5 stars Wild Birds Indeed .......2007-05-13

This is an excellent disc for the casual Peter Murphy fan. It is a bang for the buck CD from an often overlooked eclectic artist. There are some true masterpieces here mixed in with a few clams in the middle of the disc. Tracks 1-3 and 9-16 are all excellent. "Cuts you up" may be the only true "hit" on the disc but there is some really remarkable material that rock fans of all genres can appreciate. One need not be familiar with his work in his previous band Bauhaus to enjoy this music as the music on this best of is quite varied. Very little of this disc would be classified as Goth.

5 out of 5 stars some hits, some of Peter's fave's.......2004-12-06

As far as greatest hits albums, this one delivers just because Peter's hits are just masterful. If I was going to be nitpicky, I'd complain that this compilation does not capture all of his best work, but the collection clearly captures some of Peter's own favorites -- such as 'Deep Ocean Vast Sea', 'Dragnet Drag' and 'Jemal'. While all good songs, they probably mean more to Peter than some of his most devout fans. I would have liked to have seen 'Marlene Dietrich's Favorite Poem', 'Blind Sublime', or 'Crystal Wrists' myself.

But again, this is a really good greatest hits album, and well worth the money for either collector or newly minted fan.

5 out of 5 stars Don't get me wrong!.......2003-12-13

Some supposed fans did not buy the album for sure as they did not see "All night long" song on the album?? It is on mine (track 11) and was the major reason why I have bought it. This song is really awsome with french speaking in it (done like an extract of Zelda game). Also, there is not 5 but 4 songs from "Cascade" album.

His major songs are on there "Cuts you up", "Indigo eyes",
"Subway", "Roll call" and a new "Jemal" version. Unfortunately for me,"Marlene Dietrich's favorite poem" is missing.

All his artistic talents on one album.

5 out of 5 stars A great voice.......2003-10-16

Since I hear for the first time "All night long", in a brazilian radio, in the 80's, I've never been the same to hear music. He surprises anyone at every time, in every song, with his powerful voice, and his gothic atmosphere. Yes, atmospheric, this is the best definition to a singer that creates with real feeling, making something that is really deep, and at the same time, cool. It's impossible to hear "Subway" and don't hear it again and again...passing the tracks, "I'll Fall With You Knife" is there, beatiful...and so many other songs, all beatiful. So,I think that "Wild Birds" is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars A Superior Mix of Great Songs!.......2002-06-13

This album might be a redundant buy for those of you who have followed Peter Murphy since Bauhaus and Dali's Car days... although it does have a nice mix of well-known Murphy favorites that would be great for a road trip without having to lug all of the albums along with you.

I find myself suggesting this ablum as a first buy for my friends who are just getting into Peter's work... after this one I tend to draw them in further with "Deep" or "Dust".

After a point, it's very easy to become completely absorbed by Peter's music, and this album touches on many of his different musical ventures with fairness to many years of very fine work.

This recording captures the 1985 London cast that transformed an obscure French musical based on Victor Hugo's gargantuan novel of pre-Revolutionary France into a worldwide phenomenon throughout the late-'80s and '90s and became one of the best examples of the era's trend of blockbuster musical spectacles. Yes, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schoenberg's score tends to recycle its themes, but the beautiful melodies and stirring anthems rarely fail to captivate and touch its audience. Colm Wilkinson is the heroic Valjean, Patti LuPone is the tragic Fantine, Michael Ball is the love-struck Marius, and Frances Ruffelle is the despondent Eponine, with Roger Allam (Javert), Alun Armstrong and Sue Jane Tanner (the Thénardiers), Rebecca Caine (older Cosette), and David Burt (Enjolras) filling out the excellent cast. Fans will want to take note that this recording includes some material that was revised when the show crossed the pond to Broadway--"Little People" was lost altogether, while the "Love Montage" was significantly rewritten. Les Misérables sounds especially vivid in its 1998 remastering, and a synopsis and full lyrics are included. --David Horiuchi

2 out of 5 stars Not the Best.......2007-06-29

I agree with many of the comments made by others. But let me give some of my own. The London production is an early production of the Les Mis and like all early productions, composers and producers improve the product as it goes to new locations. The New York album is for me infinitely better than the London album. The slowness of the songs in the London production are incredably annoying. The singing is at times pedestrian. Many voices are smaller or less interesting than those in the New York production. The orchestration was enlarged and improved in the New York production. For some songs the orchestration is totally changed. In all there is no comparison. I also love the anniversary production and as a recording would prefer that none. I have not heard the complete ORchestral recording and can not comment on it.

Let me also agree with most of what was said about Ms. Ruffelle as Eponine. She is a disaster and almost distroys the New York album. Strangely she is less annoying in the London album because her singing softer and therefore less annoying. I disagree with those who say she can not annunciate. I also disagree that she has a horrible voice. I think she has a decent pop voice. It just Does not BELONG in this musical. It sounds like a pop singer thrown into the 18th century. She is miscast and totally out of place. I did not know she was a pop singer until I read the comments below. But you could guess it by her style and phrasing. I can not think of any album almost destroyed by a miscasting since I heard the Deutche Gramaphone version of West Side Story with the strange casting of Jose Cararas as Tony. It killed the entire albmu. Luckily, Eponine is a smaller part and it does not totally destroy the LOndon or New York version. I just want to know WHY SHE GOT THIS PART....and then why she further got the part in New York. If someone has the story, PLEASE tell it.

5 out of 5 stars This is the original for me.......2006-10-07

Having seen Les Mis in London twice as a kid, the OLC version is simply the only worthwile version for me. While you could argue that some of the later versions are technically better, they just sound wrong and off-tempo to me.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best !.......2006-07-31

Simply put, Les Miserables is one of the greatest musicals ever written for the stage. Both the London and Broadway versions of this classic best each other in terms of superiority, but you can't really go wrong with either.

The marvelous London cast includes Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean, Roger Allam as Javert, Patti LuPone as Fantine, Michael Ball as Marius, and Frances Ruffelle as Eponine.

Best Songs include:

At The End Of The Day
I Dreamed A Dream
Come To Me
Master Of The House
Stars
On My Own
A Little Fall Of Rain
Bring Him Home
Empty Chairs At Empty Tables

If I had to choose between the two, I'd lean towards the Broadway version ... though it's hard to pass up anything Ms. LuPone does.

3 out of 5 stars Worst of 4 versions.......2006-07-18

Les Miserables is definitely one of the better musicals out there. Among the four (Original London, Original Broadway, Complete Recording, and 10th Anniversary) most popular versions, however, this is the least appealing. The tempo is slow, providing for some boring listening, plus the casting of some actors is questionable. Among the most annoying cast members is Frances Ruffelle, who should not be in musical theater at all. She has a bad voice, she can't enunciate well (major speech problems there), and worse, she has bad singing technique (cannot sustain long lines and high notes -- incorrect breathing). She doesn't even deserve to be compared to Lea Salonga (who is a million times superior over her Ruffelle). I'd second the thought that if Salonga were old enough to audition for this role in the early 80s, Ruffelle would not even been remotely considered. And no, Ruffelle was NOT invited to join the Dream Cast, even though the concert was going to be held in London; Cameron's asistant, in fact, had to persuade Lea Salonga to give up recording the Miss Saigon Complete Recording just to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime 10th Anniversary event.

As some reviewers have mentioned, this album is a good buy if one wants to trace the evolution of this mega-musical. If you want the best buck for your money, however, get the 10th Anniversary version (it's live -- it has the dream cast, plus excitement in the air just fills the entire recording). An excellent second choice would be the Complete Symphonic Recording.

4 out of 5 stars Some problems... but overall, a good album.......2006-07-16

The London Cast has issues, it's been criticised as "too slow", and it is the next step up from the French concept album, so the show was still being sorted out. Some of the performers are unremarkable, but the majority are amazing. It is a nice album, but the best overall cast is the Tenth Anniversary Cast. I'd recommend this as a CD to see how the show evolved. I'd also take it over the Broadway and International cast recordings.

However, one thing I noticed when I was reading through the reviews was that if Lea Salonga had been old enough to audition, she would have won the role of Eponine. Uh... NO. Frances Ruffelle was the first choice for the Dream Cast and couldn't make it so Lea was the second choice. Frances is simply amazing and the bucketload of awards Lea won for 'Miss Saigon'? That was Frances back in 1989 for Les Mis.

As celebrated as Afrika Bambaataa has been, until now his music has remained scattered across disparate collections. That's what makes Looking for the Perfect Beat such a welcome release. Collecting 11 of Bam's sides on one CD, the album neatly summarizes his seminal studio recordings, beginning with both versions of 1980's true-school grail, "Zulu Nation Throwdown," and ending with 1985's "Funk You." The tracks are all restored to their uncut full-length 12-inch mixes. The highly influential Arthur-Baker productions "Planet Rock," "Looking for the Perfect Beat," "Renegades of Funk," and "Frantic Situation" are the main draws here. But don't sleep on "Unity Pt. 1" from 1984's fiery meeting between James Brown and Bam. A completist might wish for "Death Mix," and while a set like this demands liner notes, there are none to be had. But, for now, thank the funk gods the void has been filled. --Jeff Chang

5 out of 5 stars Great Old School.......2007-05-14

If you are a fan of early Hip Hop, then this is a CD for you.

3 out of 5 stars Planet Rock.......NOT!.......2006-10-31

I bought this hoping the Planet Rock Track was the original. It ain't.

They credit the original Kraftwerk members, so I thought for sure this would be it. Unfortunately, it's a new performance with another keyboard sound. Consequently this Planet Rock sounds gratuitous and has lost all it's originality and cool.

While I'm still relatively happy with the purchase, those of you looking for the original track - keep looking!

5 out of 5 stars The Essence of Hip Hop!.......2006-04-12

Even if you just buy this CD just for Planet Rock, it is a GEM in its self. This CD displays what Hip Hop is all about expressing yourself and having fun at the same time.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfection.......2004-08-16

This CD has almost everything. The early hits with Zulu Throwdown was just an appetizer to whet the true-schooler's appetite, then you can feast on Planet Rock, Looking for the Perfect Beat, etc. The only letdown was it did'nt have Play It At Your Own Risk, a couple of songs at the end of the collection could have been left off. But in my opinion its money well spent.

4 out of 5 stars Starts slow, but ends hot!.......2004-06-27

To my taste, this CD is back-loaded with hits. The first couple of tracks are OK but the rapping doesn't reach the potential of the music. When it comes to the last few, however, "Who do you think you're funkin' with" being the best example, you may not be able to keep your jaw from dropping. I honestly do not think that these tracks (with the Sugar Hill Gang backing up) have ever been surpassed in the hip-hop genre. They are so dense and complicated and incredibly arranged.

Disclaimer, however: I saw this band live in 1988 and it changed my life. I am so happy to have this album finally to refresh my memories of that amazing night.
