Neither Circus nor Spectacular, but it is Karl King........2006-10-15

Having played a number of times under Karl King, I had great expectations for this CD. Alas, it was not to be. The music is there, the musicians play all the right notes and the conductor keeps time. The recording is only mediocre, of Laserlight quality, and the performance is not what I expected from what they call a "Circus Band." Indeed, the liner notes state that the band is mostly students and professionals from the Philadelphia area. In other words, a "pick up" band. And the conductor seems to have no circus experience only small town symphony experience (from the puffery in the liner notes). From listening, it would appear that he has never even heard a real circus band. Both conductor and band would not last a day at a real circus. I do have a suspicion, however, that the musicians would do better under a better conductor.

Now, if they called themselves a concert band, that would be accurate and fair, and would not have dashed my hopes, as they are OK as a concert band. But just OK.

Of course, a concert band can indeed generate all the excitement of a bona fide circus band, as Frederick Fennell so aptly demonstrated on his Mercury recordings.

Now, if you want real circus music played by a real circus band, get a Merle Evans recording.

However, having said all that, I will keep the album, as I have always been a Karl King fan, and it is fine music decently played by an OK concert band.

Great circus music.......2005-08-12

I needed some circus music to promote a fundraiser our Lion's club was having (a circus). I got the CD on time and it sounded great. I could not find this type of music anywhere else. Thanks.

Good music, mediocre playing.......2001-11-19

It was indeed exciting to find so many of Karl King's marches on one disc. The band's playing, however leaves a lot to be desired, as does the sound quality of the disc. The balance is poor, with a very annoying tenor sax playing loud and out-of-tune on every cut. Buy this if you are a march collector (which I am), but I do not recommend it for its entertainment value. Get the "Screamers" disc by Fennell and Eastman for a far superior set of circus marches with great playing and sound.

Review of Circus Spectacular.......2000-12-07

Certainly the best thing about this CD is that there are many of Karl King's marches that have probably never been recorded previously, which is curious, since some of them rank with his best. The curious thing about this CD, on the other hand, is that it is supposedly a circus album, but only a few marches were actually written for the "big top". This band is not the best I have heard - recommend listening with headphones, to get a much clearer, less muddled sound. King was only kind of a contemporary of Sousa, having lived 35-40 years later. He actually published more marches than Sousa, and generally wrote in a style that was "softer" than the March King. Sousa wrote mostly military-style marches (better than anyone else ever has, of course), whereas King wrote many military as well as circus marches, and marches in a simpler style, suitable for school bands.

Circus Spectacular.......2000-08-12

This recording of music by Karl King is absolutely splendid -it contains 28 tracks most of which I have certainly not heard before - I particularly liked the tempos of the marches - not too quick but just right - the band is good (although I had never heard of them) - I came across this recording by chance and I'm glad I did - highly recommended

Six Feet Under's "Warpath" is the weakest of the SFU releases, but it is still worth a couple of listens. The first thing you will notice is the album is more laid back and it grooves, more like newer Entombed albums. It seems that Barnes was trying to create more a "Stoner" Death Metal album, and most of this album falls a bit short, as its just not the same without the harsh lyrics and bone crunching riffs. There are a few noteworthy songs here though, and considering the price of the album (3 bucks used) its worth it. I highly dont reccomend starting here though, I would add this last to your SFU collection. Its not a total disaster, average at best, but at least it didnt go in the direction Metallica went with Load and Re-Load. ENJOY

What happened here?.......2006-05-31

Chris Barnes. Throughout this guys career, he has created controversy. When you think of him, you think of an [...]. With his first band, the infamous Cannibal Corpse, he made a name for himself in the metal scene. How? With Cannibal Corpse, he took over the lyrics and out came the two most controversial albums during that time, 1991's "Butchered At Birth" and 1992's "Tomb Of The Mutilated". After the release of the less-gory "The Bleeding" in 1994, he was kicked out of Cannibal Corpse and formed Six Feet Under. Always outspoken, Barnes has become more of a symbol in my opinion than a death metal singer. One, he is not that good of a growler compared to legends in the genre like, maybe, his replacement for Cannibal Corpse, George Fisher. But, as an outspoken individual, he used Six Feet Under as his cry to legalize marijuana. His gory lyrics were toned down a bit, and he focused more on the pot thing than the gore thing. He is either loved or hated, and most people, included mothers and politicians all over the country, hate this guy.

Allen West. Having the lead guitarist of Obituary in your side project is a big feat. West is a great guitarist, and if you ask anybody they will tell you that Obituary was a great band with some awesome riffs. Throw in a former Death musician and you would think that you have a great band. The only problem was, the riffs were extremely simple in Six Feet Under's first two albums, "Haunted" and "Warpath". Simplicity in death metal is not good. Especially in a crowded genre with so many talented bands. Chris was just worried about making his statement on marijuana, and because of that many Cannibal Corpse fan's (including myself) felt like they wasted money on those two boring first albums. I never tried Six Feet Under again, unless you count hearing some of their newer stuff at a friend's house or wherever. From other reviewers and the metal brethren alike, I hear that it is really not the much different from anything else, and they even did a huge project of covering AC/DC songs. I really don't get it.

Anyway, this album has boring riffs, simple song structure and uninspired solos, and they are not present on many songs. Compared to Cannibal Corpse and Obituary, the two main member's former band's, you wonder what in God's name they are thinking? Maybe stoner metal? Maybe a shot at the mainstream? I really think that they were aiming for the mainstream metal crowd, which makes death metal fans cringe. Something you would expect from Chris Barnes, but not Allen West. In this album, "Warpath", there is only one or two good songs. My favorite being "Caged And Disgraced". Even though the riff is cool, it got old very quickly and it isn't even brutal or anything. This album, and most of Six Feet Under's later albums were just Barnes trying to legalize marijuana. I guess that both of these guys actually forgot that death metal is about the music, not about a point. Even though Barnes did create a fuss with Cannibal Corpse...

If you are looking for blistering guitar solos, lightning fast double-pedal drumming with blast beats and gravity blasts, or extremely intense bass solo's, then Six Feet Under is not for you. Chris Barnes' vocals are not the best, but he at least did better here in Six Feet Under then in the first four Cannibal Corpse CD's. Nontheless, if you want to sit back and smoke a blunt or you are the biggest newbie to the genre, then Six Feet Under is probably for you. Just an extreme disappointment from two legends who formerly made great music with their former bands. This what happens when a death metal band goes mainstream. They forget about the music and go for the point they are trying to make. I give this two stars because there are some good riffs in there, but the song structure is just so boring that you forget it in about a week and are just disappointed that you supported musicians who seem to not take music seriously anymore like they once did very well.

Ok this is the first six feet under cd I ever heard and I liked it when I first heard it so I got it... It was still good but after I got Haunted, Maximum Violence, and True Carnage and went back to this one somehow it lost what was good about it.... If you are EXTREMELY NEW to death metal just try out the cd if you like it get it and expand off it If you dont then try some other bands

Warpath. From the first song, I get the idea that this CD will lead me into a warpath involving gory chaos and bloody bodies flung carelessly left and right, mutilated and degraded in every possible way. Unfortunately, the warpath seems more like a campaign, and that campaign to legalize marijuana.

Well, it's not that bad, I suppose. I just wish Barnes would leave the pot obssession in his personal life and interviews rather than throwing it into death metal songs. I want gore. Not a dreadlocked death metal legend telling me how great weed is and how bad it is that it's not legal.

I really like War is Coming, Nonexistence, Burning Blood, and Revenge of the Zombie on this CD. The rest is just there. Some of it tolerable, some of it not so tolerable. Some of the songs sound an awful lot alike, and I was sad, because this isn't the first Six Feet Under CD I listened to(listened to a lot of Maximum Violence, some of Haunted, bought True Carnage and Bringer of Blood before hearing anything off this but Warpath)and I was disappointed that the songs didn't seem to have as much of a distinct difference between them as I had grown accostumed to from Six Feet Under. They don't sound EXACTLY alike, don't get me wrong. They're just somewhat similar. Which is somewhat boring.

If you're a 6FU fan, definitely get it. If you don't know about it, go ahead and still get it, because it's worth it for the songs that are good, and the ones that aren't great don't rape your ears with badness or anything.

Of course, listen to the clips first to see if you like their style as a lot of death metal elitists don't like it.

Peter only left us six vinyl records, recorded between 1961 and his death in late '65 at age 33. Only four of those have been transferred to CD, combined into two releases by Bear Family of Germany. If there is a LaFarge cult, I haven't encountered it yet, but sign me up. Peter was an Indian, but a cowboy too. He was rural, but also urban. He loved and recorded the western songs of the l9th century, but also was the first to write pro-Native American protest songs, narrowly beating out Buffy St. Marie, who quickly followed his lead, and created even more powerful polemics about Indian mistreatment. This offering combines two albums he did for Folkways in the early 60's. Included here are the songs Johnny Cash put out (written by Pete) on his famous "Bitter Tears" album of '64. If LaFarge had done nothing else, he would deserve honor for composing "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" which Cash made into a huge hit. But there is plenty else on this release. Peter's voice is an acquired taste...it requires about three listenings to begin to like his rough but not unpleasant tone. Once one gets used to him, one can even learn to love it and need to hear it regularly. Don't think of him so much as a "singer"---like Woody Guthrie, his songwriting outclassed his own performing talent. About one third of the songs on this CD are sung well by Pete. Another third are in the "talking blues" or "recited" style. For the remaining third, his own voice fails to sell his own song as well as a more polished singer might. Like Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs, the totality of Peter's performance had more impact than the individual parts. Combine the words, the voice, the guitar and the sincerity, and you've got something worth hearing. Separate the components, and each piece is less impressive. Throughout this CD, however, there are couplets and verses which sparkle with genius. For instance: "Call him drunken Ira Hayes, he won't answer anymore...not the whiskey-drinking Indian, nor the Marine who went to war." Or this: "If you want to know this country/if you want to know this land/take a look at the wide Missouri/or walk the sandy Rio Grande/When you get to know her people/then you'll get to know her heart/you'll find New York and Frisco ain't so very far apart." One of my favorites on here is "If I Could Not Be An Indian", which has the phrase "It's hard lessons to the rulers/when they hold a captive race/you cannot reach a man's heart/when you're stepping on his face." The long song "Drums" is about the futility of sending Indian kids to boarding schools in order to turn them into copycat Anglos. It is one of the best songs and finest performances of Pete's career. Here's a verse from "Take Back Your Atom Bomb" that I think worthy of Emily Dickinson: "Take back your atom bomb/give us back the arrow/God's eye is on the neutron/as well as on the sparrow." Peter was a diamond in the rough, perhaps, but some of us like our folksingers and writers to be a little less accessible than the pop craftsmen of Tin Pan Alley. Peter was unique and is well-worth checking out.

Peter LaFarge, also know as Peter Bucking Horse, is one of the greatest folk singers to contribute to the Native American. His music is thought provoking, sometimes funny and always intense. Although the "Bob Dylan" type voice is strickly a matter of taste, the stories he sings are for generations to carry the struggles of America's first children on and on.
Historicaly rich and emotionaly hypnotic.

A talented songwriter.......2000-07-09

I first heard of Peter Lafarge by way of Johnny Cash's album "Bitter Tears". I loved the album and upon looking at the songwriter on my favorite songs, saw that it was Peter Lafarge. I later found a scratched up album of Peter's at a yard sale. To hear him do the versions of his songs was an eye opener. Granted he did not have the best voice in the world and the instrumental background is sparse, but oh what a lyricist. If you want something to dance to skip this c.d. But if you want a history lesson and to really hear the Indian's side of the story buy it. Peter Lafarge was a very talented songwriter who, unfortunatly died much to young. But his songs live on. Listen to the lyrics of "As Long As The Grass Shall Grow" and even though written in the 1960's it is still a testament of how the American Indian has been mistreated throughout the white man's rule of America. And sadly the mistreatment continues. "The Ballad Of Ira Hayes" should be a song taught to schoolchildren today. In closing I will say this about Peter Lafarge. He, in my opinion ,is in the same league as Kris Kristofferson. Not a great voice, but a great songwriter,who's not so great voice complements his songs very well.

Hearing it again after many years and liking it more........1999-12-08

I knew Peter when he recorded this album. I was very young, just up from Virginia. Peter taught me history books lied. I had never heard of Ira Hayes. I have now. I bought this CD a year ago and I heard it through older ears. I realized how wonderful it is musically and lyrically. It is serious and funny. I wish Peter was still here. This CD can tell you things you never knew if you just listen.
