Goofball New York Thrashmetal with a brain and a Punk attitude.......2007-07-09
Not as intense nor anywhere near as morbid as Slayer's Seasons In The Abyss of the same year, Anthrax's Persistence Of Time cries for tolerance and the end of hatred and stupidity in a more melodic sort of way. While both albums are good favorites of mine, I enjoy this one especially for it's passion and agression. While many typical air-headed mainstream metal fans would possibly like this cd for it's tough hooks and the more extreme fans of death metal might find it to be too simplistic, Persistence of time finds perfect ground between punk rock anger and speed and heavy metal musicianship. I believe anyone who likes rock music could find enjoyment with this album. The lyrics are definitely a plus for those with an intellectual side. Calling for action and positive thought among the rat race of despair, death, greed, racism, and substance abuse, Anthrax stand high above their thrash metal peers leading a revolution that would sadly go nowhere and lead to bands like limp biskit and korn spouting utter nonsense. If you like any kind of heavy music with an intelligent side then please give this cd a listen. Any other person who likes Slayer and the Dead Kennedys like I do could truly enjoy this. Even fans of the Cro-Mags come to think of it. If Blood, Discharge, and Belly of The Beast don't get your blood flowing, you may possibly be dead or into twangy annoying CMT crap...
Decent latter day Joey product - 3.5 stars.......2007-04-04
It could be said that my title to this review damns the album with faint praise. And that would be true for this album has a few good points and a group of bad ones, so IMHO here are the two sides of the coin;
The Bad
- Dour, depressed subject matter on a bunch of the songs. Gone are the silly shorts that's for sure
- Too few memorable tunes. Keep it in the Family and In My World are standouts but only the start of H*Red matches them. Unless you take into account the way cool Got the Time, a cover of the Joe Jackson songs.
- No atmosphere or sense of occasion. Everything feels a bit forced.
The Good
- the haunting Keep it in the Family and In My World - both metal to the core causing all sorts of unpleasant introspection. Basically both harrowing experienced and thats meant in a good way.
- the band yet again co-produce which means that this is how they wanted it to sound. Something in me can see the point of a producer but other times I applaud bands putting in the extra effort.
- Belladonna is in fine voice here, the band sound tight.
Not great by any means but not hurl inducing either. If you liked their early stuff and fell of the ride before this album then pick it up if you can as it fleshes out their Belladonna era catalogue nicely.
all time favorite Anthrax album.......2006-06-10
I love this album. A definite classic that really defines the thrash that is Anthrax. With great song like Gridlock, Keep It In The Family, Belly Of The Beast, and ofcourse Got The TIme. Must have for any Anthrax or thrash metal fan.
so long joey.......2006-06-05
joey belladonna's last album with scott ian and company, nice way to go out too. this album is from start to finish a great album. not every track starts out great, but from the first chorus on this is a kick ass album. the only thing that would make me downgrade this album is that scott ian doesn't harmonize with joey as much, but thats ok because joey did a great job here. my favorite track has to be one man stands, because i love the riff and scotts vocals when theyre there are superb, great great stuff.
Wasnt Up to Par back in 1991, and still is an another Over-rated Anthrax Album.......2006-02-13
I remember when "Persistence of Time" was released back in 1991. I used to talk with about the album with alot of people back then and ask what they thought if it, and most of them either said it sucked, or it wasnt up to par with the previous 2 releases before it. To this day, I still agree with those people of yesteryear, and There are really only a few really kick a** songs on this album. I think the problem with Anthrax is that "Amoung the Living" was such a Metal Masterpiece, that I BELIEVE that they were never able to top that effort, unlike other Thrash Metal artist of the 80's whos albums were getting better, or at least staying at the same level as previous releases. I cant recommend "Amoung the Living" enough, but as for other Anthrax releases of the time, only "Spreading The Disease" would rate higher then 3 stars, and of course Amoung the Living is a solid 5. Once again, this is a pretty good album, but there are some really lousy songs on here, and only two songs stand out as EXCELLENT. Try Amoung the Living or Spreading the Disease if you want some older Antrax, as they are wayyy better then this.
