After years of making fans track down out-of-print singles, obscure compilations, and odd Japanese import pressings, Sonic Youth have decided to take a little mercy on their hardcore fans. The Destroyed Room is a rarities album that truly lives up to the label, not just settling on a few radio edits and soundtrack cuts, but gathering songs from the band's recent back catalog that are genuinely hard to find: "Campfire" from the Grand Royal At Home with the Groovebox collection; "Razor Blade," a B-side to the "Bull in the Heather" single; and several cuts from the Noho Furniture Sessions, including the intriguingly titled "Three Part Sectional Love Seat" and "Queen Anne Chair." Fans and casual enthusiasts will no doubt be bewildered by the extra experimental outings of an already daunting band--but for completists, this is the last word. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

THE DESTROYED ROOM: B-sides and Rarities, a band-chosen collection of near-hidden Sonic Youth gems.

The album brings together tracks from throughout the band's career - focusing on tracks previously available only on vinyl, limited-release compilations, or as b-sides to nternational singles. Remastered here for the first time, it's a chance for fans to complete their Sonic Youth collection with pristine versions of tracks they'd been going nuts trying to find on their own. They asked for it... and now they're getting it.

I love Sonic Youth but...their records all sound the same in the end.

4 out of 5 stars A Sonic treasure trove for fans.......2007-01-20

("The Destroyed Room" by Sonic Youth)

While it pains me to give anything less than 5 stars to a recording by what is after all the Greatest American Rock Band of the Last 25 Years--nay, the Greatest Rock Band Period of the Last 25 Years--I'll respectfully knock off one star for this collection of B-sides, demos and other sonic effluvia. This collection, you see, is mainly geared to fans of the band and other related music obsessives--newbies need not apply. If you're just looking to dip a toe into the band's very deep waters, it's better to start with SY's best-of-the-early-years collection, "Screaming Fields of Sonic Love." Those wanting to try a proper album should head straight for "Sister" (which most fans agree is actually their best album) or the epochal "Daydream Nation." The material on "The Destroyed Room" dates back no further than 1994, around the time of the underappreciated "Washing Machine" album, with the majority much more recent than that. In fact, only three of the songs here even have vocals, and one of those ("Razor Blade") is just a brief out-take. If you're already a fan, however, nothing except lack of funds should stop you from diving in, as there are plenty of Kool Things to be found, especially if you share the band's love of free improv. The lengthy instrumental workout that opens the album, "Fire Engine Dream" lets the band stretch out and just explore; needless to say, it's filled with oddly tuned textures and feedback, but also something of a groove courtesy of drummer Steve Shelley, who never receives enough credit. Naturally, SY's guitarists, Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo (the real Glimmer Twins, if you ask me) are usually front and center, trading melodic ideas, drones and all-out Sonic abandon with glee. The Kim Gordon penned "Blink" is a surprisingly subtle song that would've fit right into one of the bands proper albums, and "Campfire" is an interesting excursion into abstract electronica. Unlike many latter-day noise merchants such as Wolf Eyes and Sightings, the Youth take a more laid-back, even friendly approach to horrible noise. The days of Sonic Death have been replaced by Sonic Life (an early title for the album now known as "Rather Ripped"), which is, of all things, sunny and positive. This isn't to say that it's "easy listening" (much of the stuff here will cause most "normal" folks to run for the exits). It's just that SY aim to transport listeners rather than smother them. While that approach draws sneering comparisons to so-called "jam bands," they're far more daring than the likes of Phish. If "The Destroyed Room" were released as an "all-new" album, it would definitely be considered the ballsiest release by a major rock band in years.

The biggest treat here, at least for yours truly, is the complete, uncut version of "Washing Machine's" epic coda, "The Diamond Sea." Mind you, the original version clocked in at a huge 19+ minutes--now we get to hear it at a mind-blowing 25:48! That it never feels bloated or wasteful is testament to the band's powere. Of course it's self indulgent, as is much of this album in general, but from them, too much is never enough.

4 out of 5 stars 21st Century Jam Band.......2006-12-22

If you like the 2nd disc on the Dirty deluxe set, or the Made In USA soundtrack, check out this album. Not too weird, but not too normal either.

4 out of 5 stars Forget Rarities, SY Releases 'Oddysseys'.......2006-12-17

The anticipation of new Sonic Youth discs are always welcomed events amongst fans in the know and 2006 has been an absolute deluge of the old, the new, and in this case, the odd. SY's latest offering is 76 minutes of ear-opening rare compilation tracks and album outtakes spanning from 1994-2004 (no earlier, no later).

It's reasonable to state that SY's website description to "Destroyed Room" was a bit misleading. Often times a b-sides/rarities comp is an uncohesive stew of songs 'not good enough' or 'too different' from a particular group's current art mindset. While The Youth has already tagged 2nd disc outtakes unto "Goo" and "Dirty", this release looked to be a culmination of the throwaways from SY's most recent seven albums.

Thankfully in a twist of rote expectations, "Detroyed Room" is different from hodge-podged outtake anthologies and plays very similar to the stylings of the inward-looking SYR series. Only three of the eleven songs on "Destroyed Room" contain lyrics (2 by Kim, 1 by Thurston) and the other eight are somewhat challenging instrumental compositions that stemmed from album session jams or focused peices specifically meant for concept compilation albums. The mind-bending instrumentals, most notably from the "Sonic Nurse" era, are angluar and rare-tuned oddysseys that demonstrate how this band glides into recording a new record.

In addition to quality music, the "Destroyed Room" booklet is not closet material for you portable cd-casers and/or I-Poders. With a track-by-track analysis, the mystery behind the sounds is explained well enough to leave the listener to do just that, LISTEN, and not question the band's intentions. Having read the band commentary, it'S obvious what The Youth has opted out to offer on this release; straight up experimental jamming.

FYI - Depending on what kind of SY fan you are this could be a warning or a letdown; this disc DOES NOT contain any noise freakouts. But on the otherhand, this disc does not offer great insight to polished outtake songs that are complete with verse/chorus/verse structures. Overall, this disc is good middle-of-the-road material. Spend the money and vote for peace (see the booklet for that reference).

4 out of 5 stars Blissed-out Sonic Goodness.......2006-12-17

I thank Sonic Youth for all the great music they've bestowed on us in 2006 alone...'Rather Ripped', their strongest LP since 'Washing Machine'. The "Helen Lundeberg/Eyeliner" 7-inch. The reissue of their first EP. And now, this...an into-the-groovey double-LP-length ride on the expressway to yr skull.

The subtitle tells you exactly what's here...b-sides and rarities. The emphasis, however, is on instrumental rarities that are ultra-tuff to come by. For me, mood pieces like "Campfire" and "Loop Cat" are definite highlights here. SY took the adventurous route with 'Destroyed Room'...they could've opted for some "safer" choices like "My Arena", "Superstar" or the cover of Nirvana's "Moist Vagina" from the "Sunday" 7-inch. But no. This record will challenge you straight outta the box with the 10-plus minute "Fire Engine Dream", which manages to sound exactly like what the title suggests. Oh, and the track-by-track notes are entertaining, too.

But let me say this. When I found out that 'Destroyed Room' was going to contain the full 26-minute version of "The Diamond Sea" complete with alternate ending, I just about "done a double backflip", to quote Roger Miller. I listened to this track today while fighting my way through Tulsa Christmas shopping traffic, and it prevented me from losing my patience and killing fellow motorists. God, what a song.

You may be saying, "Well, if it's so damn good, why only 4 stars and not 5?" I like to keep the 5-star rating meaningful, so I don't give it to every record that blows my skirt up. 5 Stars means 'Blonde on Blonde'. 'Velvet Underground & Nico'. 'Fun House'. You get the idea. Surely you will understand.

1 out of 5 stars Retarded Just Plain Retarded.......2007-01-23

What is the big hype about these clowns? Dont even start to call my a pussy or say "Have a sense of humor!". I have a sense of humor as much as the next guy. I laugh at Tony Danza. But WTF is this? I just dont see whats so funny abou this. I know these monkeys arent serious but damn! I am very open minded about all kinds of metal everything from Nu-metal to classic metal and maybe a little Death metal. But this is junk. If you listen to this crap I pitty you. If you laugh at this junk you must use alot of drugs or may not be right in the head! This is a novelty band! It is just for the shock value!

I am not only complaining about their lyrics. That aint the half of it. The musicmanship is also completely retarded. I have a friend who loves this stuff and he wont stop playing it! It all sounds exactly the same! Its the same noise repeated over and over again! The guitars sound like somebody crumpleing tin foil and scratching a cat on a blackboard! The drums sound like somebody banging trash cans around. The vocals sound like a rottweiler barking with a microphone tied to its neck!

And you dare to call this "true metal" and everything else is poser? There has been "true metal" long before these clowns ever came along! You are telling me KISS, Led Zeppelin, Poison, Dio, Slayer and the like arent true metal? Dont you dare call me a "pussy who listens to nu-metal" I am very open mined about all kinds of metal. Its not just the lyrics! This is a novelty band and it is just for the shock value. Thats all anybody who likes this band cares about are the lyrics. True metal has nothing to do with lyrics. And I dare not call this true metal. Its just a whole bunch of repetitive noise. No wonder this band has been around for so long and has so many alblums. It takes no talent. If you listen to this junk, get a life and move out of your mother's basement!

5 out of 5 stars Gwar in peak mode .......2006-07-21

The first 6 tracks are probably the best examples of Gwars music ever . The only loser on the cd is Poor Tom . Just kind of a boring song . But The Road Behind is a great power ballad , the kind that should have been dominating the music scene back then , not the pop crap that did . Really , if you're interested in Gwar but don't know where to start , buy this or Scumdogs . Can't miss with either .

5 out of 5 stars BEST GWAR ALBUM.......2006-04-19

I cant believe dave brockie still wants to go through with this band. This is pretty much the soundtrack for the move Phallus In Wonderland. If you can find it at a decent price, buy the goddamn movie too. Buy all of there stuff!

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

5 out of 5 stars Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

I'll admit - the banjo picking is excellent. But like too many modern bluegrass recordings they used an electric bass that tends to be overbearing. Switch to acoustic bass and I'll buy Volume II.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2001-11-25

The best of the best. If you like banjo music, you will love this CD. Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars This is a MUST!.......2001-01-09

For any and all lovers of banjo music -- this is a MUST HAVE in your collection. The instrumentals are truly inspired.

I dare you to NOT tap your toes when you listen. My favorite track has to be Wynn Osborne's "Flint Hill Special" -- a treat for anyone who appreciates the skill it takes to pick!

5 out of 5 stars Best Album of 2003/2004.......2005-01-30

Bear witness with an open mind and an open heart. Some of you may be familiar with Plato's Myth of the Cave: People live in a cave, seeing the images on the wall cast by the light coming from outside. They believe all their lives they are seeing the actual object and not merely a shadow on the wall. The Wildhearts are the thing itself, what makes that projection from outside the cave. In the last two years, if I had a nickel for every time I read some bio/press release/review proclaiming X band as the saviours of rock and roll, I'd be on tour right now (I wish I'd have a nickel back for every time I was subjected to Nickelback! Arrrgh!).

If I will ever say it about anyone, I would reserve it for the Wildhearts with this album. "Nexus Icon" is a furnace blast in the face of music that's been frozen in carbonite for all too long. "Someone Who Won't Let Me Go" is pure power pop with a serrated blade. Vocals and harmonies are carefully crafted as if Ginger was the true spawn of John Phillips (and not those other, uh, things - ick). "Vanilla Radio" is the obvious hit, but not for no reason other than it's a well crafted song with hooks, rife with the guts of rock and the right combination of molasses and ire and radio-ready production. On the sweeter "One Love, One Life, One Girl", this could have easily come from Cheap Trick if Cheap Trick wasn't TRYING so hard nowadays to be Cheap Trick (but that's another rant altogether). "Only One Hell" is the track that grew on me the most over the 1000 times I listened to this album.

There is no posing. This is it. Not the shadow, but the thing itself. They are on "Top of the World" projecting a shadow on the rest of us. But being freed from the cave to be blinded by the light, I wonder if I shouldn't hang it up myself.

5 out of 5 stars A+ offering from one of the rock world's hidden treasures.......2004-10-06

It seems that The Wildhearts can do no wrong, apart from breaking up every few years. "The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed!" follows a string of Wildhearts releases that have all been top-notch, so the expectations for this one were high. We needn't have worried. Nothing but classic Wildies here. Songs that'll stick in your head after the first listen, ball-busting guitars that'll give you the best-sounding enema you've ever had. Also features excellent production, for once. The sound is crisp and clear on headphones, and will sound just as great blasted full volume in your car with all the windows down (as this album begs to be cranked).

This album is a bit more pop-oriented than their previous efforts, as they seem to be focusing on writing fantastic songs on this one, rather than seeing how many riffs they can fit into a song (not that that's a bad thing at all!). The Wildhearts have never been a band to stay the same, and I think this is a logical step in their progression. Enjoy it.

Long live The Wildhearts.

5 out of 5 stars Shiny, Powerful Rock!.......2004-08-16

The Wildhearts are back, and I am pleased to hear it. "The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed" is a rock album that defies categories. Mixing the shiny pop of Treble Charger with the angry grit of White Zombie, this album is one kick butt ride that is constantly changing, thus doesn't grow boring. Highly, highly, highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Released 11 years too late.......2004-06-12

This album contains all the good stuff about The Wildhearts, but not the best stuff. Listen to it against Earth Vs. The Wildhearts, and you might share an opinion with a few others that their first album was the strongest album, with the content of "Must Be Destroyed" better placed before the release of "Earth Vs".

Everyone's review highlights their lyrical and musical content, but the review I think that best sums them up was written back in '93, quoting them as being 'Somewhere between Ministry and The Beach Boys'.

Good to have them still around; I'm glad I held onto the Get Well card they gave to me, with Ginger so honestly writting "Get well soon ya F@$ker!". Good Times

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CD's of the last several years.......2004-05-26

This CD is a speeding ticket waiting to happen. I've shaved 10 minutes off of my drive to work just by listening to it in the morning. The energy oozes out of the sound system and completes a circuit with my right foot, which causes my vehicle to reach 90MPH on the Northwest Tollway outside of Chicago.

If you enjoy your Rock'N'Roll with contrasts and dynamics, "...Must be Destroyed" is IT. It is 100% energy throughout with contrasts in tempo and heaviness. These are tightly crafted songs with more hooks than Babe Winkelman's tackle box.

The album takes off like a rocket with "Nexus Icon". This is as strong an opening statement that you could ever hope for on an album. The Wildhearts are giving a hearty middle finger to the current state of pop culture on this one.

"Only Love" is the song that should be released as a single YESTERDAY. It's one of those rare songs that feels familiar even though it's brand new. It's Rock'N'Roll enough to have an edge, but it also has a chorus that will infiltrate your gray matter and not let go. If I ever get Alzheimer's, I'll still be singing this one.

"Someone That Won't Let Me Go" is in the same vein as "Only Love" and almost feels like a continuation (ala Journey's "Feeling That Way/Anytime").

"Vanilla Radio" is a fist-pumping number that translates GREAT in concert. This is one of the CD's heavier tracks, but as everything else on this CD, has an incredible hook.

"One Love..." definitely sports an early Beatles influence but is still uniquely Wildhearts. It is a mid-tempo pop number, and is the softest track on the CD. It sets the table for the jolt awaiting on the next track.

"Get Your Groove On" is a very short assault on the senses with a cameo by Justin Hawkins (of the Darkness - for those who have been in a broom closet for the last six months). It is the heaviest track and plays like a watershed between the first and second half of the CD.

"So into You" is an up tempo track with some of the most memorable lyrics on the CD. This is sounding redundant, but this song also has an A+ hook. The chorus is very well done with a great guitar line that echoes the chorus. By this point, you realize that you have placed your ears in the hands of a song-writing master craftsman.

"There's Only One Hell" plays a lot more upbeat than the title suggests. It's about looking someone in the eye and saying "do your worst!" The tone of tongue-in-cheek defiance exemplifies what great Rock'N'Roll is made of.

"It's All Up to Me" features a very percussive chorus, which provides a good contrast to the other songs on the CD. Following "There's Only One Hell" which lays the blame at the foot of the other person, "It's All Up to Me" is a 180-degree response.

"Out from the Inside" is a crunchy song about perspective. This could be interpreted as the aftermath of the previous two tracks, but I am probably reading too much into it.

The CD concludes with a masterpiece. "Top of the World" is a timeless anthem that is the gift wrap on the entire package. The best lyric on the whole set is the "agony and ecstasy" line. This song is perfect. If you play guitar or drums, "Top of the World" will inspire you to pick up your instrument.

There is not a clunker on the CD. It was worth the extra $$$ as an import, and now that it's available as a domestic release there are no excuses to not own it. With proper label support and airplay, there is no reason why this band should not be dominating the airwaves. I just discovered the Wildhearts through their tour with the Darkness, but this is a band that I will be listening to until I die. These songs are timeless. If you don't want to take my word for it, look up the Spin magazine review.

As far as straight ahead Punk Rock albums go, you just can't beat this. I put it along side The Vindictives "Many Moods Of The..." album for good, humourous Punk Rock. This album was re-issued, but I don't see it on here. It shows up as 'out of stock'. You can get it new though.

5 out of 5 stars An absolutly amazing artist!.......2000-05-15

Inessa Galante's work brings tears to my eyes every time. Not only is she my idol and one of the most amazing artists out there today, but also an extremely nice person. I had the pleasure of working with her in a production of La Boheme and I was blown away. Her performance on this recording was breath taking!

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected pleasures.......2000-01-22

You might, coming across a CD entitled 'The Tchaikovsky Experience', expect yet another compilation of over-familiar favourites - not so here. While Tchaikovsky's ballets and symphonies are in danger of over-exposure, his ten operas are, with two exceptions, unfamiliar.

This beautifully planned recital provides extracts from every one of them - even an abandoned one (Undine). Four singers: two sopranos, tenor and baritone perform a selection of arias and duets. Inessa Galante delivers an engrossing and very emotional performance of the most familiar item here, the Letter Scene from 'Eugene Onegin', she enters fully into Tatyana's world. She is just as good in an extended duet from Tchaikovsky's last opera 'Iolanta', partnered ably by tenor Alexander Fedin - and she darkens her voice convincingly for a plangent account of Joan of Arc's aria from 'The Maid of Orleans' - traditionally mezzo territory. Marina Shaguch (familiar from many recent Kirov Opera recordings)has a brighter timbre, which suits Undine's delectable song, and possibly the most ravishing aria on the disc, that from 'Vakula the Smith', a rustic comic opera that cries out for a modern recording - it is almost totally unknown and contains some of Tchaikovsky's most delicious music. She is less involving in the final scene and deranged lullaby from 'Mazeppa', which doesn't pack the necessary punch here, though it is beautifully sung. Alexander Fedin is less consistent, best in the familiar excerpts from 'The Queen of Spades'. Sergei Leiferkus has the least to do, but does it well, though his account of Yeletsky's aria from 'The Queen of Spades' does not bear comparison with Pavel Lisitsian's classic account. But it is the wealth of unfamiliar music here that counts, and with sparkling support from the Royal Opera House orchestra and Neemi Jarvi, this disc is a winner, and should be essential listening for every Tchaikovsky lover.

Don't be put off by the most awful jacket design - a green tinged Sloane-y young gel(presumably Tatiana)who looks as if she's strayed in from a photoshoot for 'Brides' magazine. Ridiculous, inappropriate and unimaginative, but we all know better than to judge a CD by its cover, don't we?

5 out of 5 stars Inessa is a big star. I love her voice!.......1999-08-31

Chaikovski's music requires a very emotional performance. Inessa Galante delivers a beautiful, warm, and thoughtful experience!

She's a famous star of Latvian Opera and a well-known european artist.

    Album Description

During the late 90's Charlotte was the hot spot of activity in what has become the much lauded North Carolina hardcore scene. It was home to PRAYER FOR CLEANSING, FROM HERE ON, UNDYING and countless others. With all those extremely vital bands now defunct, THE DAMASCUS INTERVENTION has arrived to help carry the torch, thus lighting a path for the new breed of North Carolina hardcore. Like PRAYER FOR CLEANSING and UNDYING before them THE DAMASCUS INTERVENTION combine a vast array of influences and inspirations from metal, hardcore, a straight-edge ideology all the while experimenting with more emotionally driven guitar interplay. Over the last few years THE DAMASCUS INTERVENTION have been slugging it out in the trenches playing as many shows as possible throughout the South East and sharing the stage with such notable and diverse acts as: THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD, GLASS CASKET, MISERY INDEX, HASTE THE DAY, KILLWHITNEYDEAD, ARSIS, EXTOL, DEAD TO FALL, FIGHT PA! RIS, THE ACACIA STRAIN and EMBRACE TODAY. Their Tribunal Records debut, "Carefully Built | Carelessly Destroyed" was produced by Jamie King (BETWEEN THE BURIED & ME, BELOVED, GLASS CASKET, KILLWHITNEYDEAD, etc) as they felt he was the best person to help capture the intensity of their destructive live show. Besides the audio content found on "Carefully Built | Carelessly Destroyed" there is also an entire live set filmed in North Carolina. The video was filmed and edited by Blake Faucette of SERIES DVD fame and features 2 unreleased tracks not found on "Carefully Built | Carelessly Destroyed." The pits will keep getting bigger and the touring will never cease as THE DAMASCUS INTERVENTION plan to spread the word about the new blood flowing here in North Carolina's hardcore scene.

4 out of 5 stars These words need not to escape from my tongue.......2006-11-02

Let's look at The Damascus Intervention's record label, Tribunal Records, for a minute. A sports analogy seems most fitting here so that's what I'll use.

Killwhitneydead are at the forefront as any Tribunal follower would know, so they'd be the actual team. So if KWD is the team, then that would have to make The Damascus Intervention the mascot, the one who gets the fans into the game. From there you could go any number of ways as long as The Murdered is the next step.

With Tribunal pushing TDI so much it'd only seem likely for hopes to rise greatly and not be met. That doesn't happen though. TDI meet expectations and hopes on all fronts basically. This is an EP though so if this much fury is all packed in in 20 minutes, I'm sure the full length CD will be insane.

The best way I can describe TDI is if you were to take all the movie quotes and discernable vocals out of Killwhitneydead, you'd, in a sense, have The Damascus Intervention. The breakdowns are intense, there's excellent guitar experimentation, and the intense growling/bellowing vocals are all key ingredients in the stew that is TDI. The title track, Carefully Built/Carelessly Destroyed, steals the show. Breakdowns, a few whining guitar riffs, and amazing double bass drums catapult it to a hard to reach spot. There's not really much else to say about these guys, it's a worthy EP but it's way way way too short. However, if you're looking for nonstop riffage, unrelenting vocals, and insane drumming, look no further than The Damascus Intervention. If you want it cheaper though, Tribunal's website has it for ridiculously cheap. So yeah, TDI has immense potential so we can only hope they don't lose the fire that makes this EP what it is.
