If Metallica and Slayer invented speed metal, Anthrax brought it to the East Coast and imbued it with the attitude and excitement of New York hardcore. Among the Living is, without a doubt, their finest hour--a roaring, adrenaline-pumped collection of flailing beats, precise, razor-edged riffs and shout-along refrains. Unlike most full-throttle metal vocalists of the era, Joey Belladonna chose to sing as well as shout, giving songs like "Among the Living," "Indians" and "Efilnikcufecin" ("nice fuckin' life" spelled backwards) a decided melodic edge. Yet Scott Ian and Dan Spitz's buzzsaw guitar flurries, and Charlie Benante's insistent drumming, prevented the songs from ever degenerating into the run-of-the-mill heavy metal they so despised. --Jon Wiederhorn

Classic Metal; Definately one of the cornerstones........2007-05-17
I'll admit, I didn't get this album until 1996, because I was only 6 when it came out, but once I did, I don't think I listened to anything else (besides Persistence of Time) for about a year. The only factor that takes away that 5th star is the lyrics. They're a little corny, I'm sorry. But the songs are so good, and they're delivered well, everything's made up for in the end. Excellent, excellent album.
Anthrax's Finest Hour Bar None .......2007-04-03
Believe it or not, I've been a big time fan of Anthrax even before I started my senior year in high school when I was 17 years old, and I'am still a fan to this day. These guys are without a doubt one of the greatest, influentual, and one of the most popular speed/thrash metal bands of all time, and they're of course one of the best bands to form in the 80's. "Among the Living" which is Anthrax's third studio album released in 1987 was the first Anthrax album I ever bought, and fell in love with it. I would later go on and buy "Spreading the Disease", and "Persistance of Time" which were great albums as well, but "Among the Living" is the band's best album bar none. Every song on this album is full of pure adrenalizing take no grief thrashing brilliance and extremely mosh pit worthy as well. Joe Belladonna's vocals are very killer and top notch. Dan Spitz is an awesome lead guitarist who rips out lots of wild leads and solos. Scott Ian is one of my favorite rhythm guitarists in all of metal. His riffs are very heavy and well tight. Frank Bello's bass lines are extremely audible and will make your eardrums bleed blood red. And of course skinsman Charlie Benate does some of his fastest and most insane drumming on here. He also does a great job with the double bass too. The title track is a great opener that will get your adrenaline pumping and your head spinning in just a matter of seconds. I also learned that the lyrics to the title track are inspired by Stephen King's best selling novel "The Stand". "Caught in a Mosh" is a another fast thrashing headbanging favorite of mine that will no doubt have the listener of coure caught in a mosh. It's also one of the band's best songs ever. My favorite song on here no doubt has to be "I'Am the Law". This song is very in your face, and it's also inspired by the band's favorite character Judge Dredd. Track four "Efilnikufesin (N.F.L)" is I believe lyrically about the late actor/comedian John Belushi and on how he threw his life away due to drugs and alcohol. Track six "Indians" is another awesome moshing athem which has a great chorus that you can really mosh to. This song is also one of Anthrax's best songs as well, and it's a concert staple as well. The other songs are great, but the ones that I mentioned are my favorites.
Jeremy's song ratings:
1. Among the Living (5:16) - 5/5
2. Caught in a Mosh (5:00) - 5/5
3. I'Am the Law (5:53) - 10/5 Best song and my favorite too.
4. Efilnikufesin (N.F.L) (4:54) - 5/5
5. A Skeleton in the Closet (5:29) - 5/5
6. Indians (5:41) - 5/5
7. One World (5:55) - 5/5
8. A.D.I. (Horror of it All) (7:49) - 5/5
9. Imitation of Life (4:21) - 5/5
Total Time: 50:22
Overall I highly recommend this thrash metal masterpiece to all you Anthrax fans, thrash fans, metal fans, or just fans of good music in general. For other great 80's thrash, I also recommend Testament, Megadeth, Exodus, Overkill, Metal Church, Metallica, and of course the almighty Slayer.
If you don't have this album, you are seriously missing out on some pure essential thrash metal. Go out and buy it now, play it in your stereo, turn the volume up full blast, get a pit going with some friends, and get caught in the mosh. Anthrax Rules!!
Overrated As hell but not bad.......2007-02-18
First off let me start by saying I'm a huge Metal fan and am quite fond of thrash. I listen to Bands like Megadeth, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Testament, Judas Priest, Sepultura and Black Sabbath on a regular basis. After listening to this album I can't honestly figure out why Anthrax are considered to be in the big four, on par with the likes of Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth. It drives me mad. While some of the songs on here are pretty good, like the best track, the entertaining energetic "Caught in A Mosh," none of the tracks are on par with great thrash classics like Holy Wars...The Punishment Due, Raining Blood, or Battery. I know most metal vocalists suck, paticuarily thrash vocalists but Belladonna sticks out like a sore thumb in this band, because even though he's an acceptable singer, he sounds like he should be in a hair band not a thrash band like anthrax. The riffs are quite solid, with some such as the intro riff to "Imitation of Life" being one of the greatest thrash riffs ever, the band fail when it comes to writing solos. Sure people complain about kerry king and Jeff Hanneman of Slayer but I can assure you that Dan Spitz's solos are a lot worse and all sound exactly the same and have no energy. Charlie Bentante is an ok drummer, but he fails when compared to good thrash drummers like Dave lombardo, Gene Hoglan, Nick Menza and Lars Ulrich. And many of these songs are quite boring to tell the truth. In fact 3 stars is surely overly generous for this record but I do sort of like the bands lighthearded lyrics which contrast nicely to other metal bands constant rants about how the world sucks but it doesn't save the fact that there were better non-big four thrash bands significantly better than this, like Testament, Dark Angel and Sepultura. In paticular I think Testament should be part of the big four over Anthrax, there songs are a lot more memorable, their vocalist is better and the guitarist, alex skolnick writes jazz fusion solos that never fail to impress. On the other hand Anthrax mostly writes boring songs with boring solos. This stuff is absolutely dated; any people getting into thrash should absolutely avoid Anthrax and spend their time with better thrash bands like Metallica (1st 4 records), Slayer (all records but undisputed attitude), Megadeth (Killing is my business, Peace Sells and especially Rust in Peace), Testament (all but Demonic), Sepultura (Schizophrenia, Beneath The Remains, Arise, Chaos A.D), Dark Angel (Darkness Descends), and Exodus (Bonded by Blood). Avoid overrated dated stuff like this and buy the stuff above as you can save your money and have a lot more fun listening to good thrash.
Anthrax hitting midstride.......2006-10-12
This album was the second full album with the upstart Joey Belladonna on Pipes for anthrax. This was also one of the most profound albums of the New York/east coast thrash scene. Chances are, if you have heard an anthrax son, it's probably from this album. This layed the way for the next three albums/ep's with I'm the Man, State of Euphoria, and Persistance of Time to come after this. State of Euphoria was a let down for some fans (not me, I think it is good in it's own way) secondarilly to the tighness of this album. Highlights include Caught in a Mosh, and the ever powerfull "Indians". But the best song on the album is about Judge Dread and "I AM THE LAW". Even among these classic tunes, anthrax shows their light side with EFILNIKUFESIN, much like the later tunes like the song "startin up a posse" or the cover tune "friggin in the riggin" or the stuff done on S.O.D. Get this album. If you saw them live for the first time this summer on tour with rob zombie, welcome to the club!!!!
Anthrax's best.......2006-10-06
Among the Living is one of the best thrash metal CDs around. Great riffs combined with good musicianship and strong vocals from Joey Belladonna put it above a lot of other bands. Anthrax added more melody compared to their early work like Fistful of Metal and Belladonna is a major upgrade as a singer. Lyrically they went all over from American Indians to comic book characters, but also added some humor into the mix. The bass line from Caught in a Mosh and the guitar riff from Indians are enough for you to buy this CD and the rest is icing on the cake.

After his success as the cowriter of Brad Paisley's "Whiskey Lullaby," Jon Randall gets ample opportunity on Walking Among the Living to showcase himself as a multidimensional artist. His tenor vocals are the most luminous in country this side of Vince Gill, while his guitar virtuosity earlier earned him a slot in Emmylou Harris's band (where Gill also served a stint). Yet Randall's major strength is his songwriting, where he displays a range that extends from the lovesick balladry of "Baby Won't You Come Home" to the poppier, Eagles-like melody of "Long Way Down" to the harder rock edge of "Coming Back for More." On the jauntier, playful "Austin," he sounds like Lyle Lovett fronting Little Feat. Patty Loveless joins him for harmonies on "I Shouldn't Do This," while Alison Krauss (who duetted with Paisley on "Whiskey Lullaby") does the same on "My Southern Comfort." As the album's centerpiece, Randall's rearrangement of "Whiskey Lullaby" puts his haunting, intimate vocal over a backing of chamber strings. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic album!.......2007-01-12
I received "Walking Among the Living" as a Christmas gift - I put it on my list after seeing the video, "Baby Won't You Come on Home". I played the CD today and, of course, played the first track about 20 times. What amazed me more was how soulful and refreshing the rest of Jon's CD was! I highly recommend this CD - Jon's obvious talent as a singer and award-winning songwriter makes this CD a real keeper!
His Best Yet.......2006-11-10
What a wonderful voice showcased here by his excellent songwriting. This is clearly Jon Randall's best album yet.
Beautiful, lovely CD.......2006-11-06
I saw Jon Randall play live with Emmy-Lou Harris in Nottingham earlier in the year and was amazed by his angelic voice and his lovely songs. This cd is just wonderful and with some highly talented background singers helping him with bone achingly beautiful harmonies, you can't go wrong.
Great Music.......2006-03-28
Jon delivers an incredible performance on Walking. From his breathtaking rendition of Whiskey Lullaby to the relaxing North Carolina Moon to the rhythmic Long Way Down, Jon demonstrates that not only is he the best guitarist around, but he has incredible range. I hope to see more from him in the very near future. I recommend this to anyone who simply likes music. They don't come any better than Jon Randall. Thanks for the great escape so far from home, JR.
Walking Among the Living.......2006-02-25
Great music with excellent production. Very believable and honest. Jon is not only a gifted writer, but tallented vocalist as well.

This is a great score. Digitmovies has done it again by releasing another super cool cd soundtrack to the famed "Euro Trash" genre. The liner notes are very informative and the music is yet again another stroke of genius by Bruno Nicolai. Pick this up before it quickly goes out of print.

Randall's well-executed music has a calming effect.......2005-10-25
Playing Time - 54:07 -- Because there are so many Stewarts and Stuarts in Nashville, Jon Randall Stewart simply became known as "Jon Randall" back in the early-1990s. With the exception of the closing cut, "My Life," Nashville-based Jon Randall wrote all the songs on "Walking Among the Living." Best know as a backup vocalist with top-name artists like Emmylou Harris, Sam Bush and Lyle Lovett, singer/songwriter Jon Randall shows that he deserves the spotlight. Randall's well-executed music has a calming effect, and a large reputable label like Epic appears to be grooming and presenting him for mainstream success. At track six is "Whiskey Lullaby," a song he wrote with Bill Anderson that brought CMA and ACM awards to Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss for their sad and grievous duet. "In the Country" was written with Gary Scruggs and "North Carolina Moon" was penned with Ron Stewart. Throughout the album, the music is kept largely acoustic, and the arrangements enhance his expressive voice without overpowering. Guitar, fiddle, dobro, mandolin, piano, and percussion are just what the doctor ordered for his emotionally-charged vocalizing. Midway through the set, harmonica imparts intensity to the bluesy "Austin."
Jon Randall has enlisted some impressive instrumental and vocal support for the project. "No Southern Comfort" has Alison Krauss' silky smooth backup, while Patty Loveless belts out harmony for "I Shouldn't Do This." The title cut could well be his theme song as this solo debut project will open a new chapter for this talented singer and songwriter. The juxtaposition of organ and banjo in the song's arrangement emphasizes his desire to simply make good music that knows no boundaries. Although the drums a bit heavy in the mix, Randall's only cover, Robert Lee Castleman's "My Life," evolves into a hot picking session that features some kickin' guitar, fiddle, banjo, and mandolin breaks.
From Dallas, Jon's parents both played bluegrass music. He moved to Nashville after graduating from high school, and his break came at age 20 when Holly Dunn hired him after hearing him at Nashville's Opryland theme park. He then worked for five years with Emmylou Harris' Nash Ramblers. Jon recorded for BNA Records, Asylum Records, and Eminent Records. With Sam Bush, he recorded Glamour & Grits (1996) and Howlin' at the Moon (1998). After a stint touring with Lyle Lovett, he sang with Patty Loveless on Mountain Soul (2001) and Bluegrass & White Snow (2002). Patty and Jon also sang together on Grammy winner, Livin,' Lovin,' Losin,': Songs of the Louvin Brothers. It's nice to see him now concentrating on writing and presenting his own outstanding songs. Even better than the CD...........2005-10-20
We just saw Jon Randall last night - he opened for Vince Gill at the Keswick in PA. He stood up there with nothing but his guitar and crooned a few of the songs off this CD, including Whiskey Lullaby and North Carolina Moon... and he was absolutely awesome. I am glad to hear that the recordings are similar in sound, because I never would have believed someone could have sounded so awesome - just him and his guitar. I have to admit, by the time we left, I was glad we went to see Vince Gill - he was great too... but I left there totally impressed with Jon Randall. This is an awesome CD and hearing him live is even better. True gift and talent, in the flesh. My next stop is over to Pollstar to check out his tour dates. :)
Excellent--Pretty Darn Good.......2005-10-05
I am not one to rush to the store & buy a CD because I saw a band on Letterman. But, in this case, I saw John Randall on Letterman (or was it Leno? ) Anyway, he sang the title track, and it must have hit me. Because I got the CD the next day, and have been playing it nearly every night since then. I don't think I could get tired of it. Normally, I'm into folky stuff- Dar, Lucy K., Indigo Girls, P. Griffin, ChaseMissy. But, this is a great country CD and it's going to be perfect for one of our Freezing Freezing Nights here in Minnesota. I can imagine sitting in front of the fireplace w/my boyfriend @ his cabin, with snow outside, and just listening & hanging out & being in love. This CD is LOVE.....Good Job John!
Warning - A Great CD.......2005-09-28
THis is a great CD. It haunts you just like his Willin cd.
But be warned (which Amazon doesnt) you cannot download the cd to itunes. It reads as a blank cd. I think Amazon should warn us of this prior to purchase.
It Takes More To "Walk" Among the Stars.......2005-09-25
Prime Cuts: Lonely For a While, Baby Won't You Come Back, My Life
Over the years, Randall has made the headlines: In 1992 as one of Emmylou Harris' Nash Ramblers, he received a Grammy Award for the' "Live at the Ryman" CD. Later, Randall had tongues wagging over his short gun wedding to country thrush Lorrie Morgan. Last year, this Texan native had the undivided attention of the executives of Music Row when "Whiskey Lullaby," a Randall and Bill Anderson original recorded by Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss, went all the way to the submit of the Billboard charts. However, despite media's attention, Randall has never been known for his own records. Though "By My Side," a duet with his ex-wife Lorrie Morgan, did stir some chart action, his own solo efforts were largely misfires. But these bumps and dumps have not stop a determined Randall from trying. Signed to Epic Records, "Walk Among the Living" is his latest attempt to make his mark.
This time Randall returns with panache--not only did he co-wrote or wrote all but one of the 14 tracks, he has also brought in high level profile producer George Massenberg. Having produced artists as diverse as Little Feat to the trio (Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton & Linda Ronstadt) and some of Ronstadt's most roosty records, Massenberg brings in a synthesis of prodigious bluegrass with an understated acoustic rock. Randall, who has a high tenor that resonates so much with Vince Gill, is best at home on those lonesome ballads. Like Gill, who brings an air of confidence and mature vulnerability in his vocal nuances, Randall truly outshines himself on the forlorn ballad "Lonely for a While." On "Southern Comfort," a traditional country barroom weeper, finds Alison Krauss adding her plaintive harmonies to Randall's vocals in the same key of sadness. At the heart of the album's emotional nerve is Randall's own version of "Whiskey Lullaby." With the swirl of strings and Randall's even slower delivery (compared to Paisley's), Randall's version even sounds more desolate. Current single "I Shouldn't Do This" finds a tortured soul trying to redeem himself after cheating on his spouse. This cheating ballad finds its added heft in Patty Loveless' mellifluous alto.
Taking the commercial bull by the horns, "Baby Won't You Come Home" has a country rock beat that ought to shed some radio success for Randall. In fact, Randall has not sounded more rejuvenated on this yearning for love paean. "Austin" (not that Blake Shelton hit but a Randall original) is Randall's valentine to the Lone Star State. It's not difficult to groove along effortlessly with the song's rock n' roll beat coupled with some excellent Jerry Lewis-eque piano playing. Another delightful listen is the optimistic Robert Lee Castleman's "My Life" (the only track not written by Randall). Taking away the rock edge off Castleman's original, Randall has given "My Life" a bluegrassy makeover that ought to cheer up those country purists. More pensive but equally rustic is "North Carolina Moon:" here Randall seductively purrs for the delights of a simpler life in the outback. Further, Sonya Issacs' angelic country pure harmonies make Randall's cravings even more heartfelt.
Though there's much to be enjoyed here, a few tracks veer on the bland side. "In the Country" sounds too similar thematically and melodically with "North Carolina Moon." Also, if Randall is to find that bull's eye hit that ought to pin him onto the country music map forever, I am afraid it's not here. There's nothing here (song wise)that truly will distinguish him from the numerous new faces coming out each month. Perhaps a few outside songs might be needed if Randall truly wants to walk among the stars. Nevertheless, this is a good album, but it's a shy notch away from perfection.
